Spanish "doom thrashers" RHINO have set "Weight Of Coronation" as the title of their third album, tentatively due this summer through an as-yet-undisclosed label. The CD will be recorded in March at Koba studios in Bilbao with producer Xanpe and will once again feature artwork by renowed artist Rafa Garrés, who previously worked with the band on its second album, "Dead Throne Monarch".
According to a press release, RHINO's forthcoming LP will be its "heaviest without a doubt, but sure will follow the path marked by their two previous records, 'Breed The Chosen One' (2007, 7th Gate) and the above-mentioned 'Dead Throne Monarch' (2008, Arctic Music)."
BUFFALO THEORY MTL — the new project featuring three former members of the now-defunct Montreal deathcore act GHOULUNATICS — has posted two brand new songs, "Trapped" and "A Thousand Times", on its MySpace page. These tracks are taken from the pre-production sessions the band completed a couple of weeks ago and are meant to give the fans something to listen to until the release of a full-length album.
BUFFALO THEORY MTL will release five of the songs as a demo CD, to be made available at the band's shows and the group's online merch store.
BUFFALO THEORY MTL will make its live debut on March 19 at Cafe Chaos in Montreal with friends DIZZYGOTH (featuring members of ANONYMUS).
BUFFALO THEORY MTL's influences include such bands as DOWN, BLACK SABBATH, CLUTCH, KYUSS and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.

Metal Blade Records has announced the signing of the New Jersey-based aggressive hard rock outfit RETURN TO EARTH featuring the talents of Ron Scalzo, Brett Aveni, and Chris Pennie (COHEED & CAMBRIA, ex-THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN). The band's already completed second album, "Automata", is scheduled for release this summer.
RETURN TO EARTH comments: "After self-releasing our first album, 'Captains of Industry' [2007], and discovering a heavier, more intense sound during the recording sessions for 'Automata', the three of us agreed that the scope of the band's vision would benefit from the support of a bigger, like-minded record label — one that had similar musical influences and an appreciation for our DIY, 'studio-geek' mentality. Also, a label we felt we could trust and depend upon to promote our songs properly. Metal Blade was always at the top of our very short wish list of potential partners, and so we were thrilled to discover that Brian Slagel and Metal Blade were as enamored with us as we were with them. Signing with Metal Blade is an affirmation of our hard work, and we are psyched to have them in our corner for the release of 'Automata'!"
Brian Slagel adds: "I have been a big fan of Chris Pennie for a long time and we all at Metal Blade are very excited to work with Chris and the rest of RETURN TO EARTH."
RETURN TO EARTH's music is highlighted by the awe-inspiring precision of Pennie's backbeat, Aveni's catchy rock hooks, and Scalzo's sing-and-scream, harmony-heavy vocals. Scalzo states, "We're all passionate about music, and have a shared affinity for classic metal & modern-day rock with lush production. We're three guys with three different perspectives — but you can hear all those influences in our own tunes, loud & clear."
As with all great bands, when RETURN TO EARTH make music together, the disparate influences and personalities coalesce into a single vision. Scalzo explains, "Most of all, we each draw inspiration from the other guys' strengths — whether a riff, a rhythm line, or a vocal hook — it doesn't take much to ignite our respective fires, and that usually culminates in something heavy, different, and ultimately, inspirational. We're all really proud of this record."
"Promised Land of Heavy Metal", a documentary about the history and philosophy of heavy metal and how it became such a big deal in a small country called Finland, is now an HD documentary app available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This is the first indie-film app released in the world.
"Promised Land of Heavy Metal" App costs $2 USD / £1.19 / €1.79 and it includes:
* 52-minute TV version of the film (in English) * Photo galleries * Digital booklet about the "Promised Land of Heavy Metal" — Finland * Web links for those traveling or looking for information about the Finnish metal scene including: travel information, merchandise, music festivals etc.
The application is also available in a free "lite" version, which features a trailer and other information from "Promised Land of Heavy Metal" documentary.
The "Promised Land of Heavy Metal" filmmakers tell the story of Finnish metal, from its early "underground" days to the present success stories, by interviewing famous musicians — included members of HIM, NORTHER, KREATOR, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, ENTOMBED, CARCASS, KORPIKLAANI, DIMMU BORGIR and SONATA ARCTICA — experts and event organizers, a psychiatrist and a doctor of theology. The film takes the viewers literally from the graveyard to the Finnish President's palace!
Why is metal a religion for so many? What are its links to Satanism and ritualistic murders? What made metal mainstream in Finland? Why does the Finnish church have metal masses? What is the future of metal, after LORDI won the Eurovision Song Contest and even the President approves? Strong opinions are offered: some see metal as the new folk music, while others detest its commercial aspect.
The film is narrated by Kimmo Kuusniemi, a filmmaker, SARCOFAGUS guitarist and a forefather of Finnish metal. Kimmo has lived in England for 16 years, and sees the current popularity of heavy metal as a strange phenomenon.
The "Promised Land of Heavy Metal" TV documentary was developed by producer Sakari Heiskanen from YLE (The Finnish Broadcasting Company).
A four-minute trailer for "Promised Land of Heavy Metal" can be viewed below.
Video footage of ARMORED SAINT's John Bush (vocals) and Joey Vera (bass) showing off their skills in the kitchen and talking a little bit about their new album, "La Raza", can be viewed below (courtesy of Metal Blade TV).
"La Raza" will be released on March 16 via Metal Blade Records. The CD was recorded at Burbank, California's Tranzformer Studios, which is owned by Dave Jerdan (ALICE IN CHAINS, JANE'S ADDICTION), who produced ARMORED SAINT's 1991 classic "Symbol of Salvation" and Bryan Carlstrom, who engineered the same album. The band's first new release since 2001's "Nod to the Old School" was produced by Joey Vera and engineered by Carlstrom and his assistant John Nuss.
The song "Left Hook From Right Field" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.
The band's current lineup is the same as the one on 2000's "Revelation" and 1992's "Symbol of Salvation" LPs:
John Bush (vocals) Jeff Duncan (guitar) Phil Sandoval (guitar) Joey Vera (bass) Gonzo Sandoval (drums)
EMG TV has uploaded video footage of ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Inez talking about EMG bass pickups. Watch the clip below.
ALICE IN CHAINS has extended its current North American tour into mid-May, with a new leg of dates beginning on April 15 in Portland, Maine and ending on May 23 in Camden, New Jersey. More shows are likely to be announced to fill in the early part of May. The band is touring behind its 2009 comeback effort, "Black Gives Way To Blue", and singer/guitarist William DuVall told The Pulse of Radio that he likes what he's seeing in the audiences. "There's a lot of young people showing up, so that this thing has become a generational band now," he said. "So you've got people, 15, 16, 17 years old, that are coming of their own volition. I mean, they're not being brought there by their parents or anything. They're coming on their own. They're bringing their friends. So that's one thing that's a real sign that perhaps you're onto something."
"Black Gives Way To Blue" is the band's first new studio set in 14 years and features DuVall's recording debut with the group. He began singing with them live in 2006. Original frontman Layne Staley died in April 2002.
GuitarEdge.com has uploaded video footage of SYSTEM OF A DOWN frontman Serj Tankian performing the song "Baby" with his signature Taylor acoustic guitar, the STSM-T5, at the NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show in January 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Watch the clip below.
For the versatile rocker, no guitar can speak as loudly or as delicately as the award-winning Taylor T5, the industry's best-selling electric/acoustic hybrid guitar. Just ask Serj Tankian. Tankian, who released his first solo album, "Elect the Dead", in 2007, has played Taylor acoustic guitars for several years, and has spent the past two years touring with a Taylor T5. Now, Tankian brings his creative input, coupled with the expertise of Taylor's design team, to his own signature model, the STSM-T5.
The STSM-T5 is based on the popular T5-C and features a sleek, thinline opaque black body, crafted from sapele and paired with a maple top. Two stylized, unbound f-holes grace the top, and the fretboard and peghead feature a red "energy wheel" inlay design that was provided by Tankian. The same vibrant red binds the body, fretboard and peghead. Says Tankian of his T5: "The way the T5 is designed, especially when playing in an arena environment, sounds like a great acoustic and is by far superior to anything else in terms of sound, clarity, depth and tone. When I'm writing music or lyrics, I'm just pouring whatever comes out of me from the universe and channeling it and structuring it into a quality record."
The versatility of this guitar lies in Taylor's proprietary T5 electronics and five-way switching, which together yield a wide range of guitar tones, from delicate acoustic to full-on electric crunch. Three magnetic pickups - an under-fretboard neck humbucker, a visible bridge humbucker, and an acoustic body sensor mounted to the inside surface of the top - provide a complete integration of tonal output. "I try to make music in a way that I'd be interested in listening to it myself," Tankian says. "Using the T5 gives me the versatility of a pure acoustic sound or electric. It's light and thin too, so you can stand in front of the mic and just rock out. For a stage environment, the T5 works great."
The STSM-T5 is offered at a suggested retail price of $3,198 and comes in a ready-to-rock hardshell case with a certificate of authenticity signed by Tankian. The STSM is available at authorized Taylor dealers worldwide.
Video footage of the Ft. Lauderdale hard rock quartet NONPOINT performing an acoustic version of its new song "Miracle" at the studios of the Madison, Wisconsin radio station WJJO 94.1 FM can be viewed below.
"Miracle" will be available for download on iTunes and online music retail sites on March 30. The forthcoming album, also titled "Miracle", will be released May 4 via the band's own 954 Records in partnership with Rocket Science Ventures / RED / Sony.
Commented Elias: "I wrote this song as a gigantic 'Fuck You' to all those that doubted this band's will and perseverance. It's for all the naysayers that tried to lead us into defeat, and the fans that have stood behind us for over ten years. It set the tone for the whole record. We're here to wage war on the airwaves, and to stop us is going to take a fucking miracle."
Last December, NONPOINT released a digital EP, "Cut the Cord", featuring acoustic versions of NONPOINT classics, including "What A Day" and "Circles", to rave reviews. With a new guitarist, new management, and a new label, NONPOINT has returned stronger than ever.
MUDVAYNE and HELLYEAH members Chad Gray and Greg Tribbett produced the forthcoming album. Chad Gray says, "I've been a friend and fan of NONPOINT for ten years. To have the opportunity to work with them artistically from a production level was amazing. I was elated when asked to sing on a track. They're all great guys and great friends and I've very proud to have been a part of this process. The sky is the limit for what these guys are capable of."
Formed in 1998, the hard rock quartet from Ft. Lauderdale burst on the scene with its major label debut, "Statement", on MCA Records. Since then, they have sold nearly 700,000 albums and played over 1,000 shows. Known for its dynamic performances, NONPOINT has shared the stage with acts such as MUDVAYNE, SEVENDUST, DISTURBED, HELLYEAH, DROWNING POOL and PAPA ROACH, as well as touring with Ozzfest.
NONPOINT kicked off a co-headlining tour with COLD on February 16 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In a recent interview with Greg Olma of 69 Faces Of Rock, W.A.S.P. mainman Blackie Lawless was asked how he knows when a song is done. "Oh, it talks to you," he replied. "When you're writing, one of the things you learn after you've been doing it for a while is once it starts to take shape, get out of the way of it. You see, it will start talking back to you after a while.
"All songwriters who have been doing this for a while will tell you this; that they [the songs] will talk back to you and the trick is to get yourself out of the way. Stop blocking it. Let it say what it wants to say and let it take you in the direction that it wants to go. Now, when it's done, and here is the torturous part that all creative people will tell you, it's then once you believe it's done, of then at looking at what are the alternative possibilities. That can be a torturous process because it's a lot of work for maybe a miniscule change.
"One of the things I learned from [Muhammad] Ali is the difference between good and great is the attention to detail. A lot of that, that last 10% as far as man hours goes, ends up being a lot more than the other 90% that got it going in the first place. So you have to go back, even when you think it's done, and say, 'Are there anymore possibilities of where we could go here or go there?'
"I think that at the end of the day, when you look at it and whether it's done or not, you ask yourself, 'Does this thing move me?' You can always tinker with something to death and it's not necessarily going to make it better. Sometimes it can make it worse."
When asked if there any plans on filming W.A.S.P.'s current tour for a possible CD or DVD release, Lawless said, "I don't know. We just finished three months in Europe and we did a lot of stuff over there. Some of it is actually really, really impressive-looking.
"This show that we're doing now has a movie screen behind us. We're running a lot of the old promo videos from the past and when you see 'Wild Child' or something like that, you see the old video behind us and it's in sync. You see me singing in the video from 20 years ago but you also see it in 3-D as I'm standing there singing in real time. It's got kind of a neat effect.
"When you see the presentation, it's pretty impressive and there is some really good stuff that we have, but I just don't know. "The world has changed as far as the way bands approach making studio records and live records. I think live records are something you are going to see less and less of because labels aren't really interested in doing that anymore.
"Historically, a live record would have represented ½ of what a new studio release would have done. It's not just what bands want to do. You have a whole retail world that you have to take into consideration. Is Best Buy going to want to take that thing? There are all kinds of considerations that the people never think about. They think the artists make the sole decision and it's not always like that."

Of the collaborations, guitarist/vocalist Max Cavalera says, "The first one is a song with Tommy Victor from PRONG sharing vocals on a song called 'Lethal Injection'. The other is 'Rise of the Fallen', with shared vocals from Greg Puciato, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN's singer. I also recorded two B-sides with both of my sons playing drums. FAITH NO MORE has announced its first East Coast U.S. concert in over a decade: July 5 at Williamsburg, Brooklyn's Waterfront. Tickets for the show, which will benefit the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, go on sale March 19, with a special fan pre-sale taking place March 16.
FAITH NO MORE will play three shows in the band's hometown of San Francisco in early April at the Warfield Theatre. The concerts will serve as a warm-up for the band's appearance the following weekend at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California.
FAITH NO MORE reunited last year and has played European shows, but has yet to announce a full North American trek.
FAITH NO MORE kicked off its reunion tour on June 10, 2009 with a headlining performance at the Brixton Academy in London, England.
Original guitarist Jim Martin is not part of the reunion. Performing in his place is Jon Hudson, who played with FAITH NO MORE during the latter stages of its initial run after Martin departed.
The rest of the band's best-known lineup — singer Mike Patton, Gould, drummer Mike "Puffy" Bordin and keyboardist Roddy Bottum — is intact.
FAITH NO MORE released "The Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection" in June 2009 in the U.K. via Rhino Records.
This double disc set contains the band's greatest hits on the first CD, while the second CD features b-sides and rarities.
On May 17, reunited progressive rock/metal band CYNICwill release a brand new EP entitled "Re-Traced", featuring reinterpretations of four songs from the group's critically acclaimed "Traced In Air" album as well as a previously unreleased song.
"'Re-Traced' is an experiment for us — an opportunity to turn four songs from 'Traced in Air' inside out and to share something new", comments frontman Paul Masvidal.
"In our exploration, we've created music that is part 'sci-fi prog folk,' part psychedelic rock, part minimalist restraint. These interpretations feel channeled from another galaxy.
"For the most part, the tunes reference some of our favourite musical forms and in our own curious way (electronic/ambient, jazz/fusion, drum n' bass, experimental, shoegaze). There is no vocoder, no traditionally busy CYNIC riffs that are some of our most signatures sounds, but the music retains its song structure, integral melodic sense, harmony and lyrical inspiration."
Masvidal on the new song: "It is entitled 'Wheels Within Wheels' and it is the most rock/metal tune on the EP. Mood-wise it has a melodic optimism that is a bit more transparent than in other CYNIC songs, giving it a unique and emotive color.
"We are really pleased with the performances and energy of this track. Considering this song is perhaps the closest reference to a familiar CYNIC sound, it still leaves behind many of the former trademarks and introduces a new shade of groove and dynamic.
"Progressive music has many faces, and that is always the name of the game for CYNIC: reinventing ourselves and pushing our own musical boundaries for ourselves and our fans."
"Re-Traced" track listing:
01. Space 02. Evolutionary 03. King 04. Integral 05. Wheels Within Wheels
Check out the cover artwork below.
Commented Masvidal: "The artwork on the EP takes Venosa's original song paintings from the 'Traced in Air' booklet and reinterprets them by extracting the basic outlines, almost appearing as though they are etched in wood. Travis Smith helped manifest these conceptions graphically. The idea was to have the 'tracing' of the original work in tact, so it almost morphs into a simple line drawing of the sculptural shapes found in Venosa's work. The end result appears like unearthed, archival etchings from an alien planet."
Watch a "Re-Traced" video teaser below. Also available is quality fan-filmed live footage of CYNIC performing the song "Wheels Within Wheels" on January 31, 2010 at the Trocadero in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
"Traced in Air" was released in North America on November 25, 2008 via Season of Mist. Returning from the "Focus" era for the eight-song, 35-minute effort were founding members Paul Masvidal (guitar, vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums) along with Sean Malone (bass), and joining the band in the studio was newcomer Tymon Kruidenier (guitars/growls). The band recorded the CD at a California studio with producer Warren Riker (DOWN, SANTANA).
Swedish old-school death metallers SINNERS BURN have posted a new song, "Wargasm", on their MySpace page. The track comes off the band's third album, "Insanity Warmachine", which is scheduled for a late spring/early summer release via Khaosmaster Productions. The CD was recorded at The Undead Studios and was mixed and mastered by Patrick Bruss (CRYPTICUS).
Formed in 2007 by former members from PAGANIZER and influenced by bands like GRAVE, DISMEMBER and early ENTOMBED, SINNERS BURN has kept the old-school death metal spirit alive.
Comments Khaosmaster Productions manager Rafael Bracero: "It's a great day for me having a band of such quality in our roster. I have been a die-hard fan of the Swedish death metal scene since its early beginnings, so to have the chance to work with a band of this level is really an honor, and we're pretty confident that we will be a good team."
SINNERS BURN is:
Marcus Ankarberg - Vocals Richard Karlsson - Guitar Jocke Ringdahl - Drums Fredrik Nilsson - Bass

Former THE EXALTED PILEDRIVER guitarist Mark Anthony Kopernicky (a.k.a. Kinky Pork Cream) is continuing work on his PROJECT GEMINI solo project with the help of Michael Burley (guitar/vocalist of the Vancouver-based RUSH tribute called R30), Monica Julie (HAYLEY STARK), bassist Rob Tollefson (ex-PILEDRIVER) and drummer Gerry Keough (ex-PILEDRIVER, RECKON WITH ONE).
Commented Mark: "While I've been waiting to receive vocal ideas and melodies from Mike and Monica for the songs they will be singing, I've written some more songs. And I must admit that I really like these new songs. So, rather then put them on the shelf for a later recording, I've decided to record a four-song EP as well as the full-length release ('Tornadic'). I have booked some studio time, starting April 10, at a well respected studio in just north of Toronto to begin work on the EP. No title yet but I'm sure I will come up with one shortly.
"I'm looking very forward to getting started as I feel these songs are a huge step forward for me as a songwritter. I feel the songs are very melodic yet heavy.... and very progressive."
THE EXALTED PILEDRIVER's first album in 22 years, "Metal Manifesto", was released on November 18, 2008. The CD was mixed by veteran Neil Kernon (CANNIBAL CORPSE, NEVERMORE) and it follows up the classic cult discography of the band: "Metal Inquisition" (1985) and "Stay Ugly" (1986).
Flo Mounier of CRYPTOPSY will share the clinic stage with up-and-comer Jordash Isaac Dumont of EVERYTHING AFTER ZERO and legend Todd Sucherman on March 21, 2010 at the Theatre Corona in Montreal, Quebec, Canada starting at 5:00 p.m.
"The Unspoken King", CRYPTOPSY's sixth full-length and first to feature new vocalist Matt McGachy, was released June 24, 2008 to a wide array of reactions. Flo Mounier explained his intention in reshaping the dynamics of the band to Decibel magazine: "I'm a fan of different sorts of music, and I think it's most fun when a band puts out an album that has elements of everything; you get this thing called diversity, not boredom. That's what we're trying to do. Still, I think people are going to be surprised how brutal this album is."

"Dying For An Angel" audio stream (featuring Klaus Meine):
Regarding his decision to release the next AVANTASIA chapter in two separate CDs, Tobias said, "I have always given my very best, but this new chapter in AVANTASIA's history is too much and too ambitious to be just a regular album. I have worked on it for years now, and it has become even more than two albums!
"I knew that story would be spread out over two albums back then when we started working on it in 2006, 'cause we had written a real rock opera of over 20 songs even back then. But since then, we kept composing, and out came even bigger and better material.
"Looking at the music industry today with all the CD burning and downloading, I guess in the near future many of us traditional rock and metal bands won't be able to spend such a production budget. I am afraid I won't be able to afford so many guests and such a big production with orchestration and a choir and all that. That's why this production takes so much time; it may be the last big epic I will be able to afford, and I want it to be the biggest piece I have worked on so far."
Kiske has appeared on every AVANTASIA album so far, including the first two full-length releases, "The Metal Opera" (2001) and "The Metal Opera Pt. II" (2002).
On the topic of the new AVANTASIA album's musical direction, Sammet recently stated, "We've got quite many songs, and it ranges from epic ballads to metal opera. From pop to hard rock to folk to speed metal. My best friend, who co-wrote the story of 'The Metal Opera' back then, just listened to some of the tracks and he said that it will blow people away and enchant AVANTASIA fans and it will surely piss people off . . . It's just enchanting music. And these days honest and good music is kind of offending to some, that's pretty sick, isn't it? But as long as I get goose bumps hearing majestic music, I do not really care if I am fashionable or not."
The most recent album from AVANTASIA, "The Scarecrow", was one of the 20 best-selling albums in whole Europe during the fourth week of January 2008, according to a press release.
"The Scarecrow" was released on January 25, 2008 as a standard CD as well as rare picture (double) vinyl. It features a long list of guest musicians, including Bob Catley, ex-MASTERPLAN frontman Jorn Lande, ex-HELLOWEEN singer Michael Kiske, Alice Cooper, KISS drummer Eric Singer, SCORPIONS guitarist Rudolf Schenker and GAMMA RAY's Kai Hansen. The album produced a Top 10 German hit single, "Lost In Space", and entered the national charts in 15 countries, with the CD landing in the Top 10 in four countries.
Los Angeles-based experimental post-hardcore triumvirate PHILM, featuring drummer Dave Lombardo (SLAYER), guitarist/vocalist Gerry Nestler (CIVIL DEFIANCE), and bassist Pancho Tomaselli (WAR), headlined a free 21-and-over show at Club My War O))) at the Dragonfly on Sunday, March 7. Watch fan-filmed video footage of the perfmance below.
In other news, Lombardo and his two sons — Jeremy and Dave Jr. — were interviewed by Jose Mangin, on-air personality and program director for Sirius XM and guest host of MTV2's "Headbangers Ball", at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, which was held January 14-17, 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. The chat, which originally aired as part of Dean Guitars' "Live from NAMM" webcast, can be viewed below.
PHILM is scheduled to enter the studio shorty to record a seven-inch single for release via the 2010 Volcom Entertainment's Vinyl Club. The tracks will be helmed by noted U.K. producer Piers Baron, who earlier worked with Lombardo and MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister on their cover of the BEN E. KING classic "Stand By Me" for Flip Skateboards' 2009 "Extremely Sorry" movie soundtrack.
Behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the video for SHADOWS FALL's blistering take on OZZY OSBOURNE's "Bark At The Moon" classic can be viewed below. (Note: The footage originally aired on the February 15 edition of MTV2's "Headbangers Ball".)
SHADOWS FALL's "Bark At The Moon" cover was featured on the deluxe version of the band's latest album, "Retribution", which came out on September 15, 2009. The deluxe CD also included bonus covers of NUCLEAR ASSAULT's "Critical Mass" and CRO-MAGS' "Age Of Quarrel", along with a companion DVD, featuring making-of-the-album footage, live material, lessons, interviews and more.
"Retribution" sold around 13,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 35 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was released via Everblack Industries, the label SHADOWS FALL created in conjunction with Warner Music Group's ILG, Ferret Music and ChannelZERO Entertainment.
"Retribution" was produced by Chris "Zeuss" Harris (HATEBREED, MUNICIPAL WASTE), with vocal production by Elvis Baskette (INCUBUS, ALTER BRIDGE). The cover artwork was created by Sons of Nero (UNEARTH, EVERY TIME I DIE, BRING ME THE HORIZON).

Metal Blade Records has set a May 11 North American release date for "The Powerless Rise", the fifth full-length album from San Diego, California metallers AS I LAY DYING. The band recently finished up the recording process in San Diego with producer Adam Dutkiewicz (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE) and mixed the effort with Colin Richardson and his assistant Martyn "Ginge" Ford.
AS I LAY DYING's critically and commercially acclaimed release "An Ocean Between Us" landed the No. 8 position on the Billboard Top 200 chart its first week out, making it the highest rock debut on the chart that week. The band's first-ever DVD, "This is Who We Are", entered the Billboard Top Music Videos chart at the No. 2 position in the U.S. and the No. 3 position in Canada. The DVD is also certified platinum in the United States and Canada by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In addition, 2008 saw AS I LAY DYING earn a Grammy nomination for "Best Metal Performance" for the single "Nothing Left".
Progressive metal fans of a certain age will remember CYNIC as one of the founding members of the sub-genre in the early '90s. Now CYNIC is back with a soon-to-be-released EP following up on the 2008 album "Traced in Air".
On the last night of the band's 2010 tour with BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME in Charlotte, North Carolina, CYNIC frontman Paul Masvidal sat down with White Noise Metal's "That BS Dude" Brian Shields to talk about the band and the progressive metal movement's evolution.
"Generally all of the songs start on acoustic guitar with strong chord changes and a good melody," Masvidal said of CYNIC's songwriting process. "At the root of it, I'm really just interested in a great song. It's always about subtraction to kind of get to that. It's almost like an effective poem. You just wanna say as much as you can with as little as possible. It's tricky to do that in the world of progressive music because it tends to do the opposite where you're more indulgent. But we've always kind of [done] it in a more concentrated way versus the other extreme, which is extended. It's more about trying to keep it simple, really, but engaging in what we do naturally as musicians, stylistically."
On the White Noise Metal video podcast, which can be viewed below, Paul and Brian also talk about three songs off "Traced in Air": "The Space for This", "Evolutionary Sleeper", and "Adam's Murmur".
"White Noise Metal" with "That BS Dude" Brian Shields features interviews and profiles with some of the top names in the genre. Previous episodes have spotlighted bands ranging from TRIVIUM to SHADOWS FALL to THE FACELESS to GOJIRA to CORROSION OF CONFORMITY.
On May 17, CYNIC will release a brand new EP entitled "Re-Traced", featuring reinterpretations of four songs from the group's critically acclaimed "Traced In Air" album as well as a previously unreleased song.
"'Re-Traced' is an experiment for us — an opportunity to turn four songs from 'Traced in Air' inside out and to share something new", commented Masvidal.
Swedish black metallers WATAIN will release the "Reaping Death" single in picture-disc and CD formats in April. The picture-disc version features, besides the new track "Reaping Death", a rendering of a classic track by the both cursed and highly revered DEATH SS from Italy, along with some additional items. This seven-inch single will be printed in 1,300 copies. The CD version comes with the April issue of Sweden Rock Magazine, which also features a six-page WATAIN interview about the new album and everything around it. It features a cover of BATHORY's "The Return of Darkness and Evil", as a sign of WATAIN's return and also, of course, in reference to WATAIN's BATHORY tribute show that will be held on Saturday, June 11 at Sweden Rock Festival.
Both the picture disc and the Sweden Rock issue with the free CD single will be available for pre-order through www.watainmerch.com but bear in mind that shipping date for both CD and picture EP will not be until April 30, Walpurgisnacht.
According to WATAIN, "the cover piece for 'Reaping Death' is based upon the myth of Cain, the firstborn Murderer. The illustration depicts triumphant Cain upon his slain 'brother' Abel, undergoing the transformation from a slave of creation to a Lord of Uncreation. Behind him burns the fire of Lucifer, and his children dance around it in joyful ecstasy. With the murder of Abel, the gates of Death were opened for the first time, by an act of lawless will. The song 'Reaping Death' is a celebration of this act, a hymn to the hungry fire that dwell within the hearts of the bloodline of Cain."
After spending two "intense" months at Necromorbus Studio (NOMINON, AVERSE SEFIRA, FUNERAL MIST, NEX, ONDSKAPT, MORK GRYNING, ADORIOR) in Alvik, Sweden, WATAIN recently completed work on its as-yet-untitled fourth album, to be released by Season Of Mist on June 7.
"Inside Heavy" recently conducted an interview with ARMORED SAINT/FATES WARNING bassist Joey Vera. The chat is now available for streaming below.
ARMORED SAINT will release its new album, "La Raza", on March 16 via Metal Blade Records.
To complete the package, the band employed photographer Stephanie Cabral and Metal Blade's own Brian Ames. Vera states, "Metal Blade is doing a really cool digipack package for us. We felt like the city of Los Angeles is such a big part of our fabric that we wanted to use that in the design of the artwork. So with the help of our good friend and photographer Stephanie Cabral and Brian Ames from the Metal Blade art department, we came up with a really cool package that represents our band and the music on this record. We also wanted to incorporate a 'green' action by leaving out the plastic CD tray and using recycled paper. The result is a classy and poignant package."
"La Raza" track listing:
01. Loose Cannon 02. Head On 03. Left Hook From Right Field 04. Get Off the Fence 05. Chilled 06. La Raza 07. Black Feet 08. Little Monkey 09. Blues 10. Bandit Country
The song "Left Hook From Right Field" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.
Vera comments on the unique recording process for "La Raza": "We used nothing but analog gear, most of which was custom-built by Rupert Neve for Bryan Carlstrom. We hit every signal (drum mics, guitars, vocals) with custom or vintage analog gear before recording into Pro Tools. We even used rare vintage amps for most of the guitar overdubs. At mix time, we mixed on an SSL 4000E console and went to a one-inch tape reel (one of only two on the West Coast) for our final masters. Uh…you DO know what tape is, don't you?
"What does this all mean? It means we spit in the ear of the age of the mp3, teenie, tiny ear bud listening culture that has turned its back on what it means to experience music. This record is FAT. We mean, obese! Full-on cardiovascular failure stuff! Old school, baby!"
Vera previously stated about ARMORED SAINT's new LP, "The result is just amazing, and I may be hasty when I say that this may be our best record ever. But all dopes in bands say that right? Well, this time I think it's true and although my reasons may be purely personal, I still deem it truth. The songs are great and it sounds great."
Legendary guitarist George Lynch (LYNCH MOB, SOULS OF WE, DOKKEN) was the featured guest on the February 21, 2010 edition of the "Turn It Up" radio show on WSCA 106.1 FM in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During the chat, Lynch stated that LYNCH MOB's West Coast run of shows as the support act for DOKKEN inspired the four members of DOKKEN's classic lineup to begin working together again. "Yes, actually, it has," he can be heard saying. "And that's something that isn't gonna happen for a little while. We all have our respective commitments, meaning Jeff [Pilson, bass], Mick [Brown, drums], Don [Dokken, vocals] and myself are all real busy this year doing other things. But we've all made a commitment to each other to dedicate ourselves to getting back together. We've already got three songs on the table and we're gonna continue to write throughout the year and put the whole business together and probably go in the studio late fall or early winter of this year and then have a record out toward late spring of next year, and then hit the road."
Lynch subsequently issued a statement retracting the above-mentioned comments and apologizing "for being preemptive," claiming that he "just simply misspoke in his excitement." He added, "We are TALKING about a possible reunion for 2011, but it's still in early stages!"
You can now stream the interview using the audio player below.
"Turn It Up" is a two-hour radio show that focuses on new and classic hard rock and heavy metal.
All the members of DOKKEN's classic 1980s lineup reunited on stage for the first time in more than a decade on November 29, 2009 at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California.

Finnish battle metallers TURISAS have entered Sound Supreme studio in Hämeenlinna, Finland to begin recording their third album for a late 2010 release via Century Media Records.
Commented TURISAS vocalist, songwriter and producer Mathias "Warlord" Nygård: "After a nine-month break from touring to be able to fully focus on songwriting, we've finally moved forward and have now started recording. It's going to be a long project, and keep us busy all the way until the break of summer, but believe me, the wait will be all worth it.
"With three years between albums, there's been enough of time to find a fresh angle and new ideas not to repeat ourselves or albums we've done in the past. The songs rock big time, but the epic elements aren't going anywhere — it's going to sound larger than ever before. The leap forward is going to be just as big as between 'Battle Metal' [2004] and 'The Varangian Way' [2007]."
The first in series of video clips featuring footage from the studio can be viewed below.
Nygård and TURISAS were honored with the 2009 Culture Award by the Regional Council of Häme province. Since 1991, the award has been handed out annually to a person living and working in Häme region as a way to honor his/her achievements in the field of culture. The award was received by Mathias and guitarist Jussi Wickström on November 23, 2009. The Council mentioned that Nygård and the band represent "new kind of creativity in Häme" and that they "create new international culture by using old tradition."
An e-card for "A Finnish Summer With Turisas", the first-ever DVD from TURISAS, is available at this location.
In the summer of 2008, TURISAS set out to play more shows across its home country Finland than ever before. With "A Finnish Summer With Turisas", you can join them on their road trip, learn the secrets of sauna and other Finnish traditions on the nights when the sun never sets. Travel from festival to festival and go behind the scenes to find out what makes TURISAS a one-of-a-kind blend of music, traditions, fur, blood and fun.
