Former METALLICA Bassist Auctioning Off Ultra-Rare Memorabilia - Nov. 5, 2003
Former METALLICA bassist Ron McGovney (photo) has placed for sale on eBay a number of METALLICA-related items from his personal collection. Among the items being auctioned off are the leather vest McGovney wore in the photo on the group's first flyer, METALLICA's "Power Metal" business card, and a first-generation copy of the "No Life 'Till Leather" demo, featuring a never-before-heard riff tape of James Hetfield and Ron playing guitar. For more information, visit the auction page at this location.

In related news, McGovney recently made an appearance on the AllMetallica.com message board, MetBoard.com, and answered a couple of questions from fans regarding his time with METALLICA and his current activities.

When asked if it was true that he inspired Cliff Burton for his bass solo "Anesthesia", McGovney said, "I did not write 'Anesthesia'. That was all Cliff." As to whether he still plays bass, Ron said, "I still have my basses, but I really don't play too much anymore. I pulled out IRON MAIDEN 'Killers' album the other day to see if I remember any songs on bass. I was surprised that I remembered most of the album. The last band I played in was PHANTASM in 1986/87."

To my knowledge (which is basically the extent of the Behind the Music episode), Ron was dissastisfied with the attention and fame that Metallica was quickly getting, and voiced his opinion to leave. When Lars secured the deal with Cliff that he would join if Metallica moved headquarters to San Fran, Ron just left, on his own free will. I imagine this shit is worth alot more than $Q300, surely that no life till leather demo is a one-of-a-kind item.

I haven't heard anything from this guy. I have only ever read one interview from him. I would love to get that shit but its going to be way out of my price range. Good to see that he is hanging on to those basses.

he hated mustaine.
he also hated lars & james because they used a lot of ron's money & facilities (apparently he was the richest guy in the band at the time) and they didn't even say THANK YOU. btw, metallica rode his
truck to get to SF, and he paid the hotel bills.
he hated the band's habit : getting drunk 24/7. he said : lars once slept in the middle of the road, drunk.
he felt insecure when lars spotted cliff that night.

Samatnulla:
Ron was not at all a great bassist. He did his job, but no more. Cliff was way superior in any possible way.

I heard, that when he saw the band were seriously looking at Cliff, he saw the writing on the wall and quit before they could replace him

Ron McGovney admits that he hardly ever plays his bass anymore, probably works a full-time day job, and will never in his lifetime see the kind of money "tallica" makes in one year, but I still have a million times more respect for him as a musician.

It's always good to have unordinary news breaks(like this one) appear on Blabbermouth. That's what makes me come here daily. Ron McGovney should make some more music.

I don't think he worded it properly on e-bay, so not many people seen it there. It's good news for all you Blabbermouth folk to take advantage of a possible good deal. Sadly at $500.00 I still can't afford it. I feel bad for the dude though, he was probably expecting millions, O.K. maybe thousands.
