MARCOS CURIEL: I Was Fired From P.O.D.

Ex-P.O.D. guitarist Marcos Curiel has lashed out at his former bandmates, claiming that he was fired from the band last week because he has other projects and because of differences in religious philosophies.
"I was hoping I could do what Maynard [Keenan] does," Curiel told MTV.com. "He's in TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE. That's obviously not the case here. It got pretty sticky at the end about 'You need to prioritize where you're at with your music and where you're at with your walk with God.' I'm like, 'You guys are tripping, dude. I just want to be an artist, and if I can't have that freedom, I just want to fly.' If someone asks me to play with them, if someone asks me to write a song, I just want to be able to do that."
Regarding spiritual differences between him and the rest of the band, Curiel said, "That was always an issue with them. It should have never been about that. It should have been about the music."
"I hate the facade of putting on a mask in front of fans and then behind the scenes acting like someone else," he continued. "I just want to be myself all the time."
"The thing that's really bugging me out is the [the band's explanation for my departure] is portrayed all holy and shit. I hate that. That's one of the main differences we had is philosophy. They're putting that out because they know their market and they know what kids are going to say about all that."
Curiel, who has produced and remixed songs for the NAPPY ROOTS and others, has formed a new band called the ACCIDENT EXPERIMENT with two members of fellow San Diego band SPRUNG MONKEY and a singer from Seattle.
The band, which he said sounds vastly different from his previous band, have nearly completed an album and will make their live debut at the Soma club in San Diego on March 15.
"Why would I go out and start P.O.D. part two?" Curiel said. "This is more big-balls rock with a hint of prog. The bands that influence us are RUSH, LED ZEPPELIN and BLACK SABBATH — older kind of rock, but with new power, new technology, new sound. It's kind of got an AUDIOSLAVE vibe. It's killer."

I'm in no means a p.o.d. fan, but I have all the respect in the world for what that guy said. No one should put boundries on ones desire to branch out. It sounds to me like pod should just go out and get a puppet. I hope curiel finds what he truly wants to find musically. Sounds like more artists should have the balls to say what they truely feel inside.

Also, why can't they be honest and say they fired him?
It's the same thing that Limp Bizkit did, Wes wanted to support his other band yet they were being dicks about it. At least Wes left with some dignity.

Marcos's career goes farther than POD's will now. He was POD. They will lose their trademark sound now that he's gone. Looking back...I think he was the only one who never constantly preached about God.

Comparing this situation to Jason's split from Metallica is an interesting one. There is a point where you have to question a person's priorities if they feel they need to do side projects instead of focussing on the main band that they are in. My question is: Why not bring those new ideas to the band you're in? Unless Marcos' ideas were not respected or incorporated, it's unfortunate that he was fired/quit. POD will not be as strong without him, same goes with Metallica I believe. I'm still a fan of both however.

...I say good for Marcos, now he'll have more time to practice. I've seen these guys play live on tv a few times and must say that although the guitar tone is good, the playing and player are not. This guy couldn't play lead to save his life. Yes, I know I'm sitting here unfamous and typing a Blabbermouth post, but you know what...if these guys practiced a little bit more their music would have a bit more credibility. There should be no shame in being proficient on your instrument(s).
