MARDUK Explains Absence From 'Blackenedfest' North American Tour - May 29, 2009
Swedish black metallers MARDUK have issued a statement regarding their absence from the ongoing Blackenedfest North American tour, also featuring MAYHEM, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, CATTLE DECAPITATION and WITHERED.

The band writes: "The situation with MARDUK not having performed during the first week of Blackenedfest is due to Mortuus, the vocalist, not having received his visa yet.

"It is not a 'denied' visa. The band filed for a P-1 non-immigrant work visa, which is required for a band to play in the states. The visa was APPROVED by the United States Government's Homeland Security Office.

"Furthermore, as required, the band members each individually went to their visa appointments at the U.S. embassy in Stockholm for the standard interview, at which point the persons handling the band's applications informed the band that there was no further action needed and that they should expect their passports in the mail with the P-1 visa attached.

"Everyone in the band received theirs except Mortuus.

"The day before tour, while the rest of the band were at the airport awaiting to board their flights to the U.S., Mortuus returned to the embassy to inquire as to the location of his passport. At this point he was informed that he was missing one document in order to finalize the visa.

"No one in the band, nor the label, was made aware of this missing form. After we were made aware of this missing document, we provided the document to the Embassy in Stockholm and we are currently awaiting each day for the passport to be returned to Mortuus with the visa stamp. The embassy is aware of the urgency of this matter and we expect the band to join the tour in progress any day now.

"MARDUK are prepared to make up the shows they missed immediately after Blackenedfest ends. These dates will be announced upon the band's arrival in the U.S.

"We are staying on top of the situation each day and hope to announce the arrival of the band soon."

Remaining Blackenedfest dates:

May 29 - Albuquerque, NM - Sunshine Theater
May 30 - Tempe, AZ - Clubhouse
May 31 - San Diego, CA - House Of Blues
Jun. 02 - Hollywood, CA - House Of Blues
Jun. 03 - San Francisco, CA - DNA
Jun. 04 - Portland, OR - Hawthorne Theatre
Jun. 05 - Seattle, WA - Studio Seven
Jun. 06 - Boise, ID - Knitting Factory Concert House
Jun. 07 - Denver, CO - Gothic Theater
Jun. 09 - St Paul, MN - Station 4
Jun. 11 - Chicago, IL - House Of Blues
Jun. 12 - Cleveland, OH - Peabody's
Jun. 13 - Detroit, MI - The Majestic Theater
Jun. 14 - Toronto, ON - The Opera House
Jun. 15 - Montreal, QC - Les Foufounes Electriques

MARDUK was scheduled to enter Endarker Studios in Norrköping, Sweden earlier this month to begin recording its eleventh album, due in September via Regain Records. The CD's release will be followed by a world tour, dubbed "Funeral Nation 2009/2010", which will kick off in Europe.

Fan-filmed video footage of MARDUK performing the song "Throne Of Rats" on December 9, 2008 at Rolling Stone in Milan, Italy can be viewed below. Photos of the concert, which also included appearances by KATAKLYSM and MORBID ANGEL, are available on the news blog Musica Metal.

MARDUK's latest album, "Rom 5:12", was released in North America in May 2007 via Regain/Koch.

MARDUK was formed by guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson with the goal of becoming the "most blasphemous band in the world." The group's musical style strarted out as straight-forward, death metal-influenced black metal, but as the years went by progressed into a fast and intense form of black metal.

The people handling their paperwork are to blame... even if Mortuus did mess up and forgot to fill something out it's still the responsibility of the people handling their stuff to notice and make sure everything is ready and filled out properly.... atleast that's what I think!

Why the hell ONLY ON THE DAY BEFORE THE TOUR, while the rest of the band were already at the airport, MORTUUS NOTICED he still hadn't got his passport and visa?

Marduk tries to tour the U.S. for so long and now that it finally seems to happen, Mortuus ruins everything. He's obviously retarded and has no respect for the band nor the fans! He should have taken care of it earlier and not on the last minute.

Why are they waiting until now to issue this statement? Didn't this tour start almost a week ago? Sucks most of the fans had to go to the previous shows having no clue whether or not Marduk would show up. Even if the blame relies solely on the embassy (which it doesn't sound like it does), the band should have made a statement earlier to clarify things...it doesn't take a week to make a post on your website, or furthermore, send something to BM. Sounds like they a) don't really care, or b) are too stupid to figure out how to use a computer. Seeing as how Mortuus waits until the day before the tour to inquire about his visa status, I'm guessing it's a).

I was planning to go to the Albuquerque show tonight, but fuck it, I've got other things I could be doing instead...was somewhat interested in seeing Mayhem, but frankly, without Marduk on the bill I'm not nearly as inclined to go. You know, the rest of the band should have just come over without Mortuus (who has some sick vocals by the way, even if he has shit for brains) and either done an instrumental set or had someone else from one of the other bands sing...Marduk with Attila singing? Fuck yes!

I totally agree with "psilocybe" that's it's TOTALLY FUCKED UP that the band waited a WEEK to make a formal statement about this! That's totally LAME! I realize they were probably thinking the passport would show up any day & they'd just join up w/the tour in progress a few days later, but regardless it's their RESPONSIBILITY to their fans to let people know what the fuck is going on! Not to mention the stupid booking agency & tour promoters who obviously KNEW what was going on, but didn't tell anyone either-OR answer any emailed questions about it! They just IGNORED everyone's questions. It's pretty infuriating really & rather disrespectful. So many people bought tickets to mainly see Marduk on this tour & have been waiting to see them for YEARS!

Calling Mortuus a retard is not cool either though. He obviously should have inquired earlier about it (common sense), but shit happens-that's life. People make mistakes w/paperwork all the time so it's not a shock something like this could happen. Putting the blame on people in situations like that doesn't help anything. It just needs to get fixed & hopefully once it does, Marduk will indeed make up those shows in the future as promised. The main thing that pisses me off is their lack of response w/the explanation! I fully blame ALL involved for that-as it SHOULD BE a common courtesy to promptly inform the PAYING TICKET BUYERS!!! There is no excuse for such a delay! Here's a funny mental picture though: imagine how PISSED OFF Morgan must have been when he found out-esp. if he was waiting there at the airport! Hahaha. He must have been SPITTING FIRE!!!

At the same time, I dont expect every single city to be made up. As not every club will want to host a black metal band and some of the ones that do may be booked. Unless they want to book the tour WAY in advance.

Doesnt Legion live in the States? I wonder if he would be willing to fill in should Mortuus not be able to make it to any of the shows? At the very least they should consider getting an American black metal vocalist to fill in. Im sure theres a black metal vocalist here whos also a diehard Marduk fan whom could easily learn all the songs quickly. I would understand if the band isnt that trusting, though.

I don't think Mortuus could be replaced by any other vocalist. He's the best vocals Marduk ever had. Hope they get the visa asap!!!

Oddly enough, supposedly this "official statement" from the band is NOT on their official webpage, nor on their myspace page. It's a statement posted by the Blackenedfest tour page. Where does this info. come from? What band is going to single out one of it's own members to blame publicly & make them look like an idiot?
It's all pretty suspicious...

Why must everything be questioned?
So this statement is a few days late, BIG fucking deal!
Maybe you can now see Marduk play a full set list next time around.

By the way, this statement was issued by the band and the bands label, Regain Records. Marduk has been posting as a bulletin on their myspace.

GET OVER IT!

Cool their will to make up the missed shows but this means eveybody will have to pay twice?! Cause most of them were there specially to see Marduk.

May 31 - San Diego, CA - House Of Blues

I was there. I went to see Marduk and Cattle Decapitation. It was unfortunate Marduk didn't make it but another club owner said he was going to get them at his club (The Jumping Turtle) in a few weeks.

Withered were not memorable.

Cephalic Carnage was entertaining and had some good songs, I was unfamiliar with them.

Cattle Decapitation were ridiculous. If you have not heard them or seen them go, go buy there shit and get with the program. One of the best metal vocalists on the planet. Tight and brutal.

Mayhem...where to start.. I have seen many Mayhem performances with Maniac so i was not really looking forward to them. They absolutely killed. They were really fucking good man. Atillah is great, I don't know why they ever split with this guy, they are a different band with him on vocals. They were downright evil. It was brilliant. I feel like I have returned to the fold. Way to go Blasphemer, you proved to me you are one of the best metal bands on the planet.
