MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Really, Really Doesn't Want To Talk About METALLICA - Oct. 5, 2009
David Farrier of New Zealand's 3 News conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine backstage at the Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland earlier tonight (Monday, October 5) prior to the band's performance with SLAYER. Watch the chat in three parts below. A few excerpts from the interview follow.

On the role of politics in MEGADETH's music:

Mustaine: "The way that the world is right now, it's not even about living peacefully with each other; it's about who's got the biggest bombs. And that's really sad. Especially right now, what's happening in my country, being an American.

"I love my country, but I'm also an international musician, so I go places...

"Yesterday I was looking at a store for some t-shirts and it was saying a bunch of bad stuff about America and a bunch of bad stuff about Bush. And it's like, I can agree with the bad stuff about the former administration, but until you've been to America, judging us as America based off of what our government is like, that's not fair. So I try and be as unbiased as possible with our politics and the stuff that we talk about and try and keep it more about what view as Joe Everyman is gonna experience."

"When Obama became president, there were a lot of people that were really happy. I didn't vote for him. And I don't think he's going to be a great president. And right now we already see all of these things going wrong. He spends too much time on TV; it's all about his dates with his wife. Who cares?! Everybody goes and eats dinner with their family. And not enough stuff is getting done. But all of a sudden now, he's the president of the UN, too, so he's the most powerful man in the world. I mean, think about that. There's all this prediction in faith and stuff about there being one-world government, one-world currency... stuff like that. Well, dinero, the euro... all these different types of money, they're narrowing it down to just a few different currencies. Look at what's happening in Europe, with all the face of all those countries just losing itself."

On people who say that heavy metal bands like MEGADETH haven't got anything worthwhile to say about what's going on in the world:

Mustaine: "Well, they obviously haven't heard my music. I think it's really safe to make generalized statements — to say heavy metal, in general, is boorish and that the lyrics are inane. But, for me, I look at it like this: If that's all you've got to work with, how can you be really eloquent with your words? Most guys in heavy metal, they're salt of the earth. We are like people who don't generally mix with the rest of the society and we found something that works. Now me, I'm pretty verbose, I've been to the White House, I've covered the Democratic National Convention, I've met the President... I've done a lot of things. I got a bill passed into law in the United States. So I'm kind of an anomaly."

On the bill that he got passed into law in the United States:

Mustaine: "[It was the] motor-voter bill. What happens is that in the United States of America, you need to be registered in order to vote. And it was such an inconvenience to find a polling place in order to get registered prior to voting, and the polling places made it even more difficult. So what we did was we figured, 'OK, what's the easiest way to do this?' Rock The Vote was involved with it, MTV was involved with it, and I got involved with it with a couple of other celebrities. There's a provision on the driver's license forms that says, 'Do you wanna register to vote?' All you gotta do is just go [check a box] and you're registered. How simple is that? That, to me, is the American way — doing something that really simplifies people's lives without charging them a lot of money for it, you know what I mean?! This was so free — it was just a bunch of celebrities giving freely of their time. And now we've convenienced a country."

On METALLICA's "Some Kind Of Monster" documentary, which shows a very different side of him:

Mustaine: "I haven't seen it. Don't wanna see it. 'Cause I can never answer anything about METALLICA without it being taken out of context. Like, I said something about our new record ['Edgame'] — I think our new record is better than their new record ['Death Magnetic'], but that they have plenty of records that are better than stuff that I've done. So it's kind of... It was a compliment, but the people got hold of it in the press, and they said, 'Dave Mustaine thinks his record's better than METALLICA.' And it's like, 'Well, you've got ears.' You hear the two records and they totally sound different. And this was the first time I've believed over my whole career where I've actually had something that was.. not that it was comparable, but this is by far better. And I'm not saying this because it's me — even if I wasn't in MEGADETH, I would say this record's ['Endgame'] better than that one ['Death Magnetic'] because of the way it sounds.

"They're [METALLICA] a great band; they don't need me to compliment them. And the bottom line is that there is nothing I can say without it being taken out of context and wrong.

"It's kind of sad, because if I say 'I don't wanna talk about it,' I get slighted, [and] if I do talk about it, I get misquoted. And it doesn't have any bearing on my life at all.

"If there's an opportunity to play with these guys [METALLICA] in the future [as part of a METALLICA-MEGADETH tour], I'd consider it. I'll never play in the round, so if they wanna play with me, then we'll talk about it, but there's no talk; we haven't heard anything."

"You've gotta remember... See, thing is that they didn't have a pop-up video thing [in the 'Some Kind Of Monster' movie] where it said, 'Hey, Dave just turned 40 today and he's spending his birthday with Lars Ulrich [METALLICA drummer].' If it would have said that, people probably would have said, 'What a horrible way to spend your birthday. 40th birthday — spending it with a guy that is your rival.'

"What had happened was September 11 in 2001, our country was attacked — whether it was an inside job or not, nobody really has figured it out yet. And in the meanwhile, we were in Seattle, had to cancel our show out of respect to the nation, went into Canada and played the next day on the 12th and I was supposed to fly home on the 13th for my 40th birthday. Well, all the planes were grounded, so I had to ride in a bus from Canada all the way to San Francisco — couldn't go [home] to Phoenix — and by the time I did get to San Francisco, I was pretty upset. I'm thinking, 'I can't go home. My birthday party. All this stuff got set up for this, all this planning...' I mean, you don't even think about when something happens on the other side of the country, the ripple effect, how it affects all these other lives, but it did. And then I spent my night with him [Lars]. And it was like, 'I'll do it [take part in the filming], but I wanna be able to have the right of refusal [on whether the footage gets used in the film].' And after it was done, I said, 'I don't wanna do it.' And they went and did it anyway. So that was pretty much the end of the road with me. And Lars called me up and asked me to do the [Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame thing, and I said, 'No.' . . .

"The only reason I even agreed to do [take part in the 'Some Kind Of Monster' filming] was because I had hoped it would heal our friendship and that we would be able to, at some point, be civil again.

"I still like James [Hetfield, METALLICA guitarist/vocalist] — I've always liked James. I think that's the consensus in the world, though — if you had to pick between the two of them, you'd pick James. And I've seen how my career has been helped by that and how it's been hurt by that. But a lot of the stuff that goes on with me in my career, it's not in my hands anyway — it's up to God, and he's already planned my whole life out. There was a lot of times when I did some stupid stuff, and you make those decisions yourself. And when you look at the wreckage after you're all done, it's kind of like, 'Wow! What did I do?' [laughs] 'Cause a lot of times, too, you'll look at it and you'll say, 'I didn't do this. I didn't cause this.' But just because you were there and you didn't do anything doesn't mean you didn't cause it — you could have stopped it."

On whether religion has changed his perspective on things and the way he operates:

Mustaine: "It's changed a lot of things. It's like, this whole thing you were just talking about [issues with METALLICA]. That has been resolved so many years ago, and it's the public and journos that keep it alive. I don't wanna talk about it — I'd rather have somebody stand on my foot than to talk about that again. And the thing with... We had some problems many years ago with SLAYER, too. It was something that had been said, it was regrettable, but it was 19 years ago. These guys [referring to SLAYER] don't care, I don't care — it's the fans that keep the stuff going. And when a guy is doing an interview and he's OK and somebody comes up and kicks him in the crotch with an unexpected question, it totally changes the demeanor of the interview. And then you'll say something because the interviewer has antagonized you, which is what their game is in the metal community right now — 'See if we can get a sound bite out of Dave. Let's piss him off.' And you know what?! It just doesn't work anymore with me, because I know before I even go into these things what's going on. And there's nothing I'm saying that I'm regretting."

On what's next for Dave Mustaine and whether MEGADETH has any more records left to make:

Mustaine: "I don't know about the records right now, because I absolutely hate my record company; I'm really disappointed with the American record company. . . Right now I have a radio show coming up this month for three years on Clear Channel. I have my autobiography coming out next year on HarperCollins, which is one of the biggest publishers . . . After this [New Zealand] tour, we go to Australia, we go to Japan, we go back to the States, we do the Canadian Carnage [tour], we do some more dates with SLAYER, we do the States with MACHINE HEAD and a band called SUICIDE SILENCE, which is kind of a hot band in America right now, and another band [called] ARCANIUM. And then after that we're gonna be going silent running for the holidays so that we can spend some time with our families and stuff. And then we start back up again in January — we're gonna go out for two months. It's a secret thing; I can't actually announce this, 'cause I know someone's gonna watch this... But we've got two months' worth of dates planned in the beginning of January, and then we're gonna be heading overseas for some festivals and some tours in Europe. The good thing is there are so many places that want us to play, we're gonna be pretty busy for the next year and a half."

As the world's hugest MetallicA fan and also a massive lover of Megadeath I fully appreciate what Dave is saying in regards to talking about MetallicA. People do take his words about the band out of context and it's a damn shame. He was very appropriate and PC about hsis comments and shows he's a stad up guy.

And btw I play in a Denver metal band and the band he mentions Arcanium, who are from Ft Collins just outside of Denver, are great friends of ours and I just heard they got on this tour...now Dave mentions them! Fucking crazy! Good luck guys and girl!

Like "I have No Opinion on that!" or Just get up and fucking leave the interviewer sitting there without saying anything. Eventually the media will pick up on that and if they want their interview they'll avoid topics that cause it to end prematurely. C'mon Dave, Act like an NFL player, but without all the guns. You can do it. Why do you think nobody asks William Shatner about how his wife died? Interview OVER and the one who asked the question is back interviewing Local Weather girls. The secret is consistency, if you give'em the same answer every damn time for 20 questions or leave everytime they ask, things will change for you. Until then SHUT THE FUCK UP!

To me as Dave says, this is all the medias fault for continually bringing it up. Glad to hear that it has been resolved and that he would consider playing with Metallica on tour. If people wanna see this big 4 tour go ahead then they need to stop spreading rumours otherwise it aint gonna happen. Would like to see Dave get up and play Horsemen or something off Kill em All with Metallica, that might shut people up.

He even admits that Metallica does have better albums then him, which is honestly true; it just seems like these people ask him these loaded questions all the time. If I were dave I'd recommend him reconciling with lars and go out on tour with these guys, stop Megadeth for a while and be a 2nd lead guitarist for Metallica on tour so that way they can stop talking about 20+ years ago and ask him:"Hey man, how was it playing with Metallica last night?"---give this man a brand new start. He's an amazing musician that sometimes creates more genius music as Metallica but his past overshadows him. Seriously Dave play lead in Metallica for a few nights and people will keep talking about that.

he's always getting asked about Metallica, Dave has more talent in his little finger then Metallica has in their whole bodies. the only reason Metallica sold more is because they did sellout, and James has much more commercial voice then Hetfield and their stuff is less complex so its realy speaks for it self.
but i agree Master of Puppets is better then Risk for example.
but Endgame is much much better then Death Magnetic, and Metallica hasnt put out a good album in almost 20 years.

Come to think about it, Metallica was slowing Dave down. Yes MOP was a masterpiece. but Killing is my business, so far so good, and peace sells, are over the top for their day. Hey, I am as much of a megadeth fan as most true metalheads, but Dave is turning out to be a bit of a lunitic...he's not all there anymore.
Maybe he needs to go back to drugs...at least he was not raving about how is is god's gift to music and metal like he has been the last year.

POINTS:

1. Megadeth was all but dead for several years, and he almost went solo, because he could not hold a solid lineup together, or make music that wowed the metal fans he has, or gain any new ones. He only started getting good again on the System has failed, and that was average compared to classic Megadeth. The new album is okay, but lacking in good songwriting which he raves he is the master of. where are the hooks and melodies that you can latch onto, and where are the riffs that compare to classic Megadeth riffs???? Not sure??? And I am not the only one.

2. He will not SHUT THE FUCK UP about how he was in Metallica and created this genre of music...etc. FUCK OFF. Sure he was somewhat important in starting Metallica, but he was booted before they ever recorded their first proper album. Therefore you are not a true metallica member. End of story. You should not have been invited to the hall of fame awards, and that is why Lars NEVER invited you. You were so upset he didn't. He told you that because you never played on an album, they couldn't invite you.
Tough shit. Get over it, and get Megadeth in on your own term.
Now he is saying that Lars invited him and he said no. LIAR...fuckin LIAR. That is not what went down, you said so yourself only months ago.

Nuff said.

SHUT UP!! Holy god!! Do you just talk to hear yourself talk?? If what you say is true, then just STOP GIVING INTERVIEWS!! There has been many a successful act that just didn't bother giving interviews that often (Led Zeppelin comes to mind) and it created this thing called mystique. Have you heard of it? See, when you don't run your mouth, people become REALLY interested in what you're all about.

Every day, Metallica, Slayer, Endgame, Death Magnetic, Chris Broderick, on and on, and I try not to pay attention, but you make it IMPOSSIBLE!!

You're not even that good!! Newer bands freaking DESTROY you musically, and you have NEVER been able to sing!!! OK?? Do you get it??

I will buy endgame if you say nothing for one month. ONE MONTH. No interviews, no blogs, no nothing, and I'll march right into HMV and buy your damn album.

Please? Like, I just can't take it anymore. Can Blabbermouth just designate a month out of the year where there are no MegaDave stories??

-That is all that any news media wants to hear about. That's the kind of journalistic sensationalism that sells. It's your perception that Metallica is all Dave talks about is because that's exactly what EVERY interview asks him about. In fact the only interview this year that didn't ask him about this was with Alex Jones. Blabbermouth grabs the Metallica statements from Dave and they make their article's title right from that quote.

-What you're reading here is the final word. Dave cannot excape the shadow of his former band, and he knows that. But he's making himself perfectly clear right in this interview. If you hate him for it (even though he's said nothing bad about anyone but himself in this interview) then that's your own problem. Dave will be asked about Metallica again, and you'll come back for seconds and thirds and fourths... ALL OF YOU!

Why does Dave insist he was backstabbed with his interview for the movie?

He would have had to sign a contract (pen and paper, not some verbal "...but I wanna be able to have a right of refusal.")

And if Dave did sign a contract and Metallica broke it, can anyone honestly tell me Dave wouldn't try to sue the pants off of Metallica? Dave's jealous comments, going on 26 (!) years now, are the walking embodiment of "emotional distress."

Bottom line: MegaDave is full of poop. Always has been, and always will be... albeit with the occasional corn kernal of insight.

I love your music, but please for the love of God, shut the fuck up already...Metallica hasn't mentioned Megadeth in 5 years, and Dave has talked about them about 1000 times in the last 6 months. Also, anything Dave says about politics is absolutely batshit crazy. Enough of your political views Dave, you're wrong...get over it.

This of course coming from Dave who voted for Bush twice. Then subsequently did albums about how terrible his administration was. Hypocrite much???

Ahh...the soap opera that is Dave Mustaine. One GREAT piece of advice....Do keep on saying your new album is great (in actuality its good...nothing more). You'll keep looking like a douchebag cause not even any1 in the Metallica camp say anything negative about your ass....cause they're GROWN MEN. Saying anything towards another band with the word "BETTER" could mean hell..and now you're paying for it. Half of Endgame are fillers....the other half are good/great. Death Magnetic...has 2 fillers imo (cyanide, and suicide and redemption)...rest are good/great. DM wins with me....better "songwriting."

You'd get through the bible quicker than you'd get through that article. By the time you've finished reading it, the new Gun N' Roses album will be out.

That said, i reckon that was the funniest headline I've read on here for ages. He really, really doesn't want to talk about Metallica, you know.

I respect Dave, even when he makes comments I don't agree with because he's being REAL.
So many people get taken in by the well calculated comments made by bands, who know & say exactly what the fans want to hear............and the fans lap it up.
I think its a shame he has to elaborate on his elaborations in order to get snippet of something he said into its real context, shows you how pathetic & sad the music business is.
I hope all this stupidity doesn't become the cause for him not making anymore records, but build more character in him to have more to say on future records.

I have listened to the lyrics.. and you really don't have much to say about politics. At least nothing beyond the usual yammering.

As for him not wanting to talk about metallica. I'll believe it when I see it. Taken out of context? so when you talk direct shit about metallica.. what context was that supposed to be seen in? This is one incident where he didn't talk shit. What about the other 100 when he actually was?

Keep your mouth shut for a few years, let's see you do that.

Your new album doesn't sound better than Metallica's. In fact, you haven't put out a good cd since Youthenasia.....fact. It all is guitar wanking and no substance. Shut the fuck up until you have something useful to say. Oh, and I grew up religious....you are actually acting dead on right for being a christian anymore. Better than others.

This is my first post ever. So sick of Mustaine, I had to register and speak up. Now every time I see his ass say something stupid, which is daily, I can tell him to shut up.

Most of things Dave says seems to be smart, but is far from the level of how Metallica guys talk. They never use this rock-starrish stuff, then don't assume they are fucking great, they don't judge shit, they don't call bands as rivals, but their piers. Because what should speak here is the soul, Dave can't help using only his head, and then here is Jesus attached to it too.

where in ANY interview does Dave say "i want to talk about Metallica". every interview i read the interviewer brings it up. Please someone find me one. And he's right, he's damned if he does, damned if he don't. If he doesn't answer a question about Metallica, he comes off bitter. If he does they twist it around. And I'm sure Metallica gets Dave questions but they can get away with saying "next question". For once I'm on Dave's side. And i love how he throws RR under the bus, the one label who has bacially spit in the face of classic metal bands who brought them to the forefront so they can push Nickelback and Slipknot

Like many people and you above posted, Dave could easily say "next question" or "no comment" but then he drags along a whole statement about Metallica then works a dig in and then maybe a couple pats on his own back. That is when he comes off as bitter. There are time when it looks like he is being professional but then he slips in some arrogant shit about him or a backhanded compliment for someone else. Most of his interviews are taped so the journalistic spin excuse is no longer valid for him.

Dave Mustaine: "I don't want to talk about Metallica."

Then he proceeds to talk about them for five paragraphs. 821 words!

Seriously, you don't want to talk about Metallica, Dave? You could've left it at your first sentence.

Then the interviewer asks about religion, and you throw out Metallica again!??! Yeah right, Dave. You could easily give the answer you don't want to talk about Metallica, but you can't resist the temptation to further slag them.

Everyone on here blames the interviewer. IT'S THE JOB OF THE INTERVIEWER TO GET THE JUICIEST COMMENTS POSSIBLE! That way, it gets viewers/readers like us who will always pay attention to this! The fault is on Dave. He could give a simple answer, "no comment." But Dave is the Terrell Owens of heavy metal, Terrell can't resist calling out someone whether it be a quarterback not throwing him the ball or a coordinator not calling plays to get him the ball. Then he blames the media for asking the question.

Oh yeah, skyscrapers made of steel-reinforced concrete collapse through themselves at free-fall speed all the time, top down, symmetrically, straight through the path of most resistence... and with unexploded spheres of thermite present in the rubble afterwards. Oh wait, they don't? I guess those evil terrorists must have suspended the laws of nature that day. Those nifty little bastards.

I'm a Mustaine fan, and I do sympathize with him on the Metallica situation. But I also have to wonder at the same time why he doesn't do the obvious, as many of you have already said -- just say no comment, and don't talk about it. I know press is press, but...I personally would rather have no press than the same damned questions being asked every day.

I don't know. I feel bad for Dave and the way half you fucking twits just berate him.
