MASTODON Debuts Three New Songs At BONNAROO; Video Available

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON debuted three brand new songs during their performance yesterday (Saturday, June 14) at Manchester, Tennessee's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Professionally filmed video footage of the new tracks — which are reportedly titled "Oblivion", "Ghost of Karilla", and "Divination" — can be viewed below. ( UPDATE: Links to clips removed at MASTODON management's request.) MASTODON's new album is rumored to be based on the life of Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (a.k.a. "Mad Monk"), a Russian mystic who is perceived as having influenced the later days of the Russian Czar Nicholas II, his wife the Tsaritsa Alexandra, and their only son the Tsarevich Alexei. His image, as well as the official teaser image for MASTODON's upcoming album, can be seen below. MASTODON's new CD is being recorded in Atlanta with producer Brendan O'Brien. Drummer Brann Dailor told Billboard.com that so far, "everything sounds real creepy and spaced out and different." He was particularly enthused about a 15-minute jam dubbed "The Last Baron", which happily, O'Brien had no interest in making shorter or changing. "There's so many toys to play with over at his studio, like pipe organs and all this crazy sh*t," said Dailor, who was introduced to O'Brien through Bruce Springsteen drummer Max Weinberg (his son is a big MASTODON fan). "There are little cool things we're going to do to the record that we've been wanting to do for a long time." Love it! Can not wait for the new material!! Sounds like a mixture of all there albums, much more experimental sounding, hope they have a bladecatcher sounding song on there too, should be another good year for metal! Can't wait to catch them on tour! The Mastodon train keeps on rolling, i feel this time its going to get bigger!!!

vocals have always been the weak link for Mastodon...they should also be thankful they have such a great drummer, because the guitar style gets a bit annoying/repetitive sometimes. It would be almost unlistenable over a standard beat.

For the love of God let the bassist go back to handling vocal duties. The guitarist didn't cut it on Blood Mountain and vocally this sounds just awful.

Following Type O Negative on the Rasputin topic is a little weird... What is even more weird is to see their guitarist forcing himself to handle vocals after the debacle of the last tours where he just couldn't squeeze out a single note properly. Nothing against him but he should let their bassist do the work.
The new material sounds more challenging and I like the use of retro synth effects. Promising!

to all the haters you suck. I think it funny as hell the Mastodon is the same concept Type O did last year, i loved dead agian and am looking forward to the new Mastodon record.
Mastodons vocals fit the brutality of the music, Mastodon is about the skillfuly played music. not a vocalist poseing and prancing around the stage.
and last of all calling mastodon metalcore are fighting words.

I loved the more experimental songs on Blood Mountain and it sounds like they're keeping in that direction. This band and Machine Head are the only reasons i'll be at that crappy Rockstar Mayhem fest. Can't wait for this album!

That kind of argument works in the defense of Isis but far less for Mastodon - as soon as the vocals kick in it pretty much sabotages the whole song. Singing out of tune like that is almost a skill in itself but they seem to be getting silly with it lately. Less drugs and more singing please Brent.

His voice sounds gone because that's his "singing" voice. What you hear on BM is studio magic. Those guys can't really sing or scream like what is on the recordings.

Pretty straight forward stuff.
The vocals are a little rough but its live for crying out loud. I haven't heard very many singers live that can pull off their vocals as well as the album versions.
I'm sure the album will be good but I hope they aren't dumbing down their songs too much. I love the wackiness and technicality of their previous albums.

The vocals on Blood mountain were cool. I especially dig the vocals on Sleeping giant. Their vocals are unique and fit the music.. One of the main things that got me into them was the unique vocal style as well as the top notch playing.

Who cares man? I love Mastodon cause they got a good sound, they're brilliant technically and they write creative and ass-kicking heavy metal. If you don't like them then fine, I'll enjoy good music while you sit here complaining about it. The new songs sound awesome, can't wait for the album.

For all you guys going 'Brent sucks as a singer...blahblah' well may I remind you that those videos were live? Honestly what vocalist sounds exactly like they do in the studio? Also just because Mastodon is using a drawing of Rasputin as a teaser image does not mean they ripped off Type O Negative by doing the 'Rasputin thing'....whatever that means....TON used a photo of Rasputin and that was it, Mastodon is making a whole album around him and Czarist Russia.
Also, Mastodon are not nu metal or metalcore....god damn people are turning into big fucking morons nowadays.
