PRIMORDIAL Drop Off X-MASS FESTIVALS 2005 European tour
- Sep. 12, 2005
Irish dark metal masters PRIMORDIAL have cancelled their participation in the upcoming X-Mass Festivals 2005 European tour (featuring EXODUS, HYPOCRISY, WINTERSUN and NAGLFAR). "We simply felt there was no point in us opening up for 25 minutes to half-empty halls and playing three songs, which it looked like being, so we have jumped ship, and it seems will play with MORBID ANGEL, UNLEASHED and ENSIFERUM and two more [acts yet to be announced] from December 1 [until December 13... unless the Gods stand in our way," the band write on their web site.
PRIMORDIAL's fifth full-length album, "The Gathering Wilderness", was released last February through Metal Blade Records.

This band should be proud to even be playing front people.whether it be three people or 20,000.
"We simply felt there was no point in us opening up for 25 minutes to half-empty halls and playing three songs"
^^^that right there make a promoter want to ask the band to play at his club or fest.

I love Primordial, but this is a dick move. At one point, bands like Opeth were playing for 25 minutes to half-empty halls and look at them now. You gotta take your fair share of shit sandwiches before someone tosses you a bone, that's just the music business.
Oh, and "The Gathering Wilderness"=Top 10 album of 2005. No joke.

When you think about it, a band like Primordial playing for 25 minutes doesn't really make that much sense. Given that they've jumped to a different tour, they're still gonna get the exposure they deserve.
And bloodjunkie, Primordial has been going for a while now. It's not like '...Wilderness' is their debut album. They're a pretty well-established and much-loved name in the underground. I'm sure when they first started out they played their fair share of 25-minute gigs, like Opeth. This band simply is too good to be playing a little warm-up set, especially with an album that good under their belts. And I'd say Top 5 so far, at least.

Personally I'd rather see them with Morbid and Ensiferum, too bad that tours not coming to the states :0(

Crimson Ghost-I'm aware of how long Primordial has been around as I have many of their albums that came prior to "Wilderness" and am also aware of their status in the underground. Not to sound like a dick or anything but just because I used an Opeth example does not mean I'm some trendy Roadrunner kid who wears a Trivium shirt. I was comparing two bands with (relatively) long songs playing short sets for exposure.
In no way did I say Primordial should be playing 25 minute sets but if that is what it takes to make a bigger name for yourself, you gotta do it. No band is famous overnight and dropping off tours because of set times is, in my opinion, a crappy move. Instead of worrying about it, go out, make some new fans and grab an hour long set the next time around. They may deserve better but good bands don't always get what they deserve (Nevemore playing for 30 minutes on Gigantour...retarded).

They probably realized what a dumb move it was to Pay to Play. That same promoter only gave Diabolic a 20 minute set once...The X-Mas festival sucks ass...

Heheh, I didn't think you were some surface-dwelling trendy. If you have 'The Gathering Wildernis' in your top 10 albums, you obviously have some taste.
I was just saying I can see why they made this decision, and that I'm sure they've already payed their dues. And after all, touring (even a short tour like that) ain't cheap, so they have to weigh costs against benefits. Plus, as I said, if they are going to play those other shows instead, where I guess they'll get to play a longer set, they'll still get a chance to win some new fans. I would've loved to have seen them at X-Mas Fest though...
