Will SLAYER's Next Album Be Its Last?
- Aug. 6, 2007
|
|
Michael Baronas of Worcester magazine recently conducted an interview with SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. A few excerpts from the chat follow: On touring with MARILYN MANSON: "Apparently our manager took it upon himself to inquire a while ago about doing a tour together with MANSON, and when I say ‘a while ago' it could be more than four years — and they said ‘no.' They turned the offer down. This time the MANSON camp called him, and he said, ‘Let me discuss it with the band and I'll get back to you.' And that's the story that I've been told. . . My first response was, 'Wow, this sounds kind of interesting.' That it would make for an interesting evening. It's an attention-getter, enough so that lookie-loos would come and I sincerely think that [the crowd] will be an even split." On SLAYER fans being known to chant the band's name throughout entire sets of opening acts: "A lot of bands opt for us closing, but there have been a few that wanted to close, like the SLIPKNOT tour we did in 2004. We always look at the opening spot as a prime-time spot, you know what I mean? Everybody's there for prime time, which is 8 or 9 o'clock. We have no qualms as far as opening for anybody, because that means that they have to follow. I don't want to sound big-headed, but to us, that's considered signing your death warrant. I think that MANSON's got his work cut out for him." On the end of SLAYER: "Well, there have been remarks made about seeing an old man headbang. And I have to agree. I think the STONES can do that, probably go out and do their stuff in their 80s, but it just wouldn't look right [for us], you know what I mean? "It's actually pretty strenuous. That's why I don't see it going any further than a certain point in time. We have one more record to do, which is our deal with [super producer Rick] Rubin, and we'll have to sit down and discuss the future. But I can't really see myself doing this at a later age." On life after SLAYER: "I've always been the kind of person who goes with what comes at you and then you just take it. You just kind of flow with life, and I've been fortunate enough that that's how my life has been since I graduated from school. After school I was working and I wanted some time off. I wasn't allowed the time off, so I quit. "I remember the supervisor asking me, 'Well, what are you going to do?' I looked at him and said, 'I don't know. We'll see where the music takes me.' I was headstrong and fortunate enough to hook up with three other guys who had the same vision and the same direction. The hardest thing to do when you're doing music is getting people to be on the same boat that you're on. I think that had a lot to do with why we managed to get where we are, because we shared the same vision. "Opportunity raises its head and it shows itself to you. You have to take the initiative to either see it and go with it or be blind to it completely. We were lucky because opportunity showed itself a lot of times and we were smart enough to recognize it and take it." Read the entire article at www.worcestermagazine.com.

I loved Slayer when Reign In Blood first came out 21 years ago, and I love them just as much today. I'll admit that I 'd be sad to see Slayer come to an end, but then again those guys are in their late 40's. I can't see them doing more than one more album. so I guess maybe they'll put a new album out sometime in 2009, they'll tour for a year and a half... so I'm thinking that Slayer will probably cease to exist around 2010. I wonder what the guys will do once Slayer is no more?

Whether it's the next album or 15 years down the road Slayer has earned the right to stay on the scene for as long as they like. Oh so if old men don't belong on a rock stage, I guess your saying Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, AC/DC, Kiss, Def Leppard, Helloween, Dio, Black Sabbath, Ozzy and well ANYBODY who played in the 70's and 80's don't belong. That's cutting the heart out of metal.

I've never really understood why they're such a big goddamn deal (aside from Lombardo who is top-notch). It's fast, loud, brutal and mean and all things that we love about metal, and that's cool but... IMO thay aint the be-all end-all. They're just another good metal band. Keep going, hang it up...makes no difference to me.

the last three paragraphs about "life after slayer" was brilliantly said. A lot of people fail in life because they dont take the opportunity given to them. Tom and company took the bull by the horns and made one of the best thrash metal bands evern known... Great job on the success tom and if its time to hang it up... well... HAIL SLAYER!!!!!!!!!

Who says you have to bang that head or whip that neck around? With Slayer's presence, I would be content with them commanding the stage head movement or not.

Slayer are legends. No they're not the be all end all, but they pioneered a large chunk of what we take for granted today in modern metal.
I don't get why people say "old men don't belong on a rock stage". As long as their performances stay good... who cares about age?
In Cuba musicians often perform well into their 80s and 90s, (see Buena Vista Social Club) and no, they don't move much. But the crowd benefits from seeing masters who have 70 years experience on their instruments just totally rip and dominate.
Why can't we afford the same respect to our music legends? Why must we file them away when they get wrinkled?

As much as I love Slayer, I do think they should call it a day in a few years time. The Rolling Stones still touring and making music in their 60s is one thing. They don't play at 200 bpm every night. Playing music at Slayer's intensity is not easy and these guys are in their early 40s and mid 40s now. They should do one more album, one more woorld tour and then call it quits. It will be a sad day when they go but their place in the history of metal is assured.

If they can manage to get it out in less than five years they can still do one last contract. They are all in their early 40's and playing such intense music night after night does take its toll but they aren't going anywhere for a while. I'd say we have at least ten more years with the gods before they hang it up.
Saw them for the 44th time last thursday and they ripped the place apart as usual, haven't lost a step at all. It's almost a shame for Manson.

these "old guys" in bands talk about retiring because "it's so hard". and this just might be slayers last album, at least for this record company, because i would have expected them to sell alot more, and i'm sure their record company did too.
but these band guys will never retire and the stones, kiss, paul macartny, etc are all proof.
money has nothing to do with it (if they're already rich), but ego has everything to do w/ it.
dudes like that have to feel like they "still got it" and they can still be "relevant" in whatever state they find the scene in.
so unless they're some kind of recluse or paranoid type, as long as they can get offers to play, you can bet your ass they will!

If they have decided to "hang it up" they'll do it whenever they feel like it. Nothing anyone says is going to change or influence them. Slayer has always done exactly what the fuck THEY want to do and that's been their strength all these years; not allowing people's comments and opinions affect their vision.
I love Christ Illusion. I hope its not Slayer's last album. I personally dont think Slayer are too old to thrash. I saw Slayer lasy summer and they blew the fuckin roof off of the venue like they always do. Most of these young bands today cant even come close to putting on a performance like Slayer. Slayer dont seem to age in my opinion. If they do decide to throw in the towel, it will be a sad depressing day for Metal. I love Slayer and I hope they stay with us!!!!

I think they've still got a few more good albums in 'em. Ok, so they haven't released anything momumental since Seasons, but the last two albums were solid. If only Jeff could really get inspired!.....he is by far the superior song writer, no doubt about. Kerry's stuff has had a bit of a metalcore feel it as of late (but not overdoing it......still more thrash riffs). Do they have another Reign or Seasons in their future....doubtful, but do they really need to at this point?

All bands say this until they get to that age and then they can't bring themselves to retire. To me, that's fine. They love it too much. Plus, there is plenty of money to be made. I'll believe it when I see it with Slayer.

- I know it too. With a couple of my bands we would make a demo play a whole bunch of shows and then shit would just fall apart cuz the other members involved just started to crap out for some reason and not on the same page. I have a new band and I see similar things goin on but hopefully from what ive learned in the past will help the future.

as long as Kerry King is still willing to do all the work. As far as age, there's no big difference physically between 45 and 55. If you're still active in the music industry past the age of 35, you may as well ride it out till you die. Retirement, of any type, is putting your first foot in the grave. Staying active keeps you young.

Christ Illusion was the best thing they've done in years. I saw them at the Graspop festival in Belgium about 2 months ago and they ripped the place apart. They absolutely kicked Ozzy's ass, who was next on the bill. Of course they are not as good as in the old days, but they are still doing a great job. Perhaps they should quit while they are still at the top of their game, but on the other hand I would love to see if they still have some good albums like Christ Illusion left in them because that really was a solid effort imo.
