Rest Of DAMAGEPLAN Unhurt In Incident, Ex-PANTERA Singer 'Devastated' By DIMEBAG's Death

None of the other DAMAGEPLAN bandmembers were hurt in the Columbus, Ohio shooting incident that resulted in the death of the group's guitarist, Dimebag Darrell, a source close to the band has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET. Meanwhile, several people that have had conversations with Dimebag's former PANTERA bandmate, singer Philip Anselmo (currently in SUPERJOINT RITUAL), early this morning are reporting that the frontman is "devastated" by the news of Dimebag's death.
Although several web sites have reported that the alleged gunman, 25-year-old Nathan Gale of nearby Marysville, Ohio, hopped onstage, and allegedly made a comment about PANTERA's breakup before firing at close range into Darrell's body, Columbus police have not been able to confirm this.
Amateur video was taken from inside the Alrosa Villa nightclub and investigators were examining the tape to see if they could determine the events that led to the shootings.
There were no Columbus police officers inside the club due to a policy that prohibits officers from working inside liquor establishments. Alrosa Villa management was in charge of the building's security.

I never met Dime, but everyone single person I know who has met him had nothing but good things to say about him. On top of that, he was one of the best metal guitarists of all time. I bet his funeral will be the ultimate who's who of metal.

Patrick Lachmann was shot in the leg, but other than that, the other band members are fine.
The fifth person killed was the band's head of security - a couple other people suffered minor gunshot wounds.
(a friend of mine is very close with Bobzilla and spoke to him this morning, so that's where I got this stuff...)
Unbelievable. I can't believe that things like this happen... music is supposed to be a positive thing, not something dark like this. I know it's not the music itself, but people killing over the breakup of a band (assuming that was the motive) is just so wrong in so many ways.

I just got a call from Joe Stampley (remember him?) He talked with Vinnie this morning. Vinnie said a guy jumped on stage and shouted "You broke up Pantera" then grabbed Darrel in a head lock and shot him five times in the back of the head before grabbing another person from the audience. Vinnie said he started to jump over the drum set to tackle the guy but a roadie got to him first and a cop fired a shotgun at the gunman's head killing him.
Vinnie also said he thinks it was a former band member from Louisiana but he wasn't sure. Pantera went through several incarnations before they found the right group of people.
Obviously this has shaken the whole family up a bit. They lost their mom six weeks after being diagnosed with cancer four years ago and now they lost Darrel. Vinnie said he will never perform on stage again.

when relationships go south. Phil wouldn't have wished this on him and probably regrets everything he said. Phil was venting as we all do at one time or another. He was obviously hurt by the way the relationship between him and the brothers had fallen apart. I don't blame him for anything. He was as huge a part of Pantera as any of the 4 were. I was not much of a fan of Damageplan, but I am glad I got to see them a few months ago at Starland Ballroom. We all have bands we dislike but I don't think any of us want to see people die. I see people on here that I don't necessarily agree with but don't wish harm to anyone. Metal is a brotherhood.

I fear what this will do to metal in small venues. Probably going to lose our chance to get to see some great bands. Plus, for many bands, touring is the lifeblood. I hope new security requirements at small venues don't cause them all to shutdown because it is too costly to continue.

What a way to wake up this morning... Thank god everyone else in the band is ok. My heart goes out to Vinnie and the family as well as the whole Pantera/Damageplan camp. I cried this morning....My co workers think I am crazy..but it feel like a family member died. Pantera helped me thru many a hard time. Incidents like this give a black eye to the metal community. its a shame... Dime was an unbelievable guitarist....

What's with all the haters? What's with people wishing this on Phil? This should happen to no one. Phil now has to live with the guilt of all the shit talking and no chance to reconcile with Darrell. Even if he makes up with Vinnie, his chance with Darrell is gone forever. The dude talked so much shit because there was obviously a lot of emotion there, just like Mustaine talking shit about Metallica for years. If Phil didn't care abut these guys on some level, he would not have talked so much shit. I'm sure that right now, he's got a lot of feelings and shit that have come to the forefront that he's got to deal with. He'll be carrying around that guilt for the rest of his life. He's got to deal with the fact that his words may have impacted this sicker little fucker. Hopefully for Phil, this is a wake up call, because if this doesn't do it, then nothing will.
I'm glad to hear that Vinnie and the rest of Damageplan are ok, even though I'm not a fan. I suspect that Vinnie's days of performing are through, expect for some tributes to his brother. Vinnie was a great drummer. I love his work in Pantera.

I am so fucking lucky to have met Dimebag and the rest of Pantera back in '97 backstage after a show in Atlanta. He had the flu and still fucking played the show balls out and even hung out for a while after to talk to fans backstage, how fucking awesome. He'll be missed and NEVER forgotten. He was truely one of the greatest in the genre and one of my favorite guitarists ever - horns to you brother and much love to your family....

I am not only morning the loss of one of the best guitar players ever but of two awesome bands that I know can not play live again. There is no way to ever find a guitarist of that capacity to take his place and I doubt that they would. So no more damageplan and Panter will never play again either. Not that there was really any chance in hell anyway but now it is very much impossiable. Dimebag was Pantera & Damageplan. Not that I dont think the rest of the bands were a part of it but let's face it, without that heavy ass guitar that only he could play, they would not have kicked nearly as much ass.

Back in 91, wich I think was one of the best years in rock history (Illusions, Black Album, No More Tears, Slave to the Grind, Ten, Nevermind, etc.), when Vulgar came out, it open my eyes to a whole new world of music. It made me go back to Cowboys, and to Master of Puppets, and to many others classics. I rank VDOP as one of my top 10 best albums of all time, Cementary Gates as one of my favorite songs. CFH was one of the first riffs I learned on guitar. Man... so many memories. I was lucky enough to see Pantera twice on their prime (with Sepultura and with White Zombie). I remember just standing 10 feet away from him, in awe, watching him rip tha f*ck out of his trademark guitar. Even though I didn't like Damageplan as much as Pantera, it was good. But now... he's gone. Another true rocker's gone. Damn. Why him? He had some much more to give. Anyway, I just needed to post this. To get it out of me. I have been playing Pantera and DP all day as my personal tribute. This one's for you Dime:

I can't believe he's gone. I am from Sweden and many people over here are mourning also. Me for one. I have been depressed all day. My mom phoned my in the morning while I was sleeping and told me Dimebag's dead and I just couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it. My thoughts as so many others goes out to Vinnie and everyone close to Dimebag. And of course the other people who was killed. This is just bullshit man. He had so much more to give, so many places to tare apart. Me and my friends are going to play Pantera and DP and fucking drink in your hounor bro. You will be missed. I can't help but feel sympathy for all the family and friends and fans of the fallen. It reminds me of the early demise of other musicians:
1. James Marshall Hendrix
2. Janis Joplin
3. Jim Morrison
4. John Lennon (a real tragedy; because, like the recently deceased Mr. D. Abbott, he was assassinated by some disgruntled "human".
Than I think of 1982 when lead guitarist Randy Rhodes (excuse spelling) died in an unfortunate plane crash.
Than, more personal to me, the death of Cliff Burton in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986. Cliff was such an awesome metal bassist onstage and so kind to me during our private conversations.
Then, I think of February 2003 with the ultimate death of many victims during the start of the first song "Desert Moon" by Great White.
So, I must publish here a poem I wrote after the death of one of my own loved one's:
FOR WHEN MY LIFE IS EXTINGUISHED,
MY DEATH SHALL BE ILLUMINATED.
SO HELP ME LIGHT,
SO HELP ME DARKNESS.

i cant feel sorry for the lost members of damageplan they lived life to its fullest and will be celebrated as the artists they were.
the heroes wont be forgotten either.
people were brought together because of their art.
its a shame if they were lost as well.
sympathy to the loved ones and survivors.
the best way to honor them is to not focus on the circumstances. it was completely unrelated to why they were there. it may as well have been a random accident. they should all be remembered independently.
