LARS ULRICH Says ROLLING STONES' Rock-Star Attitude Left Strange Taste In His Mouth
- May 26, 2007
|
|
|
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich called into "The Opie & Anthony Show" Friday morning (May 25) and stayed on the air for about 15 minutes, talking about the recent HEAVEN AND HELL show he saw in Los Angeles, MERCYFUL FATE's influence on METALLICA's music and the opportunity to open for THE ROLLING STONES in 2005. A few excerpts from the chat follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):
On seeing HEAVEN AND HELL in Los Angeles:
"Me and James [Hetfield] went and saw the HEAVEN AND HELL thing — you know, [BLACK] SABBATH with Dio — two-three weeks ago in L.A. and it was really cool. I was really psyched. They're actually playing a show with us in Europe this summer. That's pretty amazing [that they're supporting us]. It's like, 'We should be opening for you.'
"Bill [Ward, SABBATH drummer] is Bill. But he hasn't been in the best shape the last couple of years. But if anybody's gonna sit in for him, Vinny [Appice] is…
"I thought it was awesome. I was really psyched about how much… It was just really spunky and it had a lot of energy. It was a good couple of hours. It was good fun.
"I'm telling you, if watching HEAVEN AND HELL up on stage doing their thing wasn't great, up by the mixing board where we were, Hetfield had his own mosh pit going, out by, like, where the lighting was standing looking terrified. I hadn't seen Hetfield that excited for years, so we'll take that too."
On the status of the new album recordings:
"We were down in L.A. for the last four-five weeks just doing all the backing tracks to the new album with [producer] Rick Rubin. We just finished about a week ago doing all the backing tracks and then I came back up here to San Francisco and I had a baby on Monday [May 21] — I didn't have a baby, but my better half had a baby — so this is my first night back in the house here, so I've got a three-day-old baby in the bedroom in there with the lady. So we took a little bit of a break for that and then we're gonna start rehearsing in a couple of weeks and we're gonna go over to Europe and do three weeks' worth of shows and do some of the festivals and all that outdoor fun and games and then back to L.A. in August and finish up the record."
On covering MERCYFUL FATE (in 1998, METALLICA paid tribute to MERCYFUL FATE by recording a medley of classic MERCYFUL FATE songs on the album "Garage Inc." Entitled "Mercyful Fate", the medley included parts from "Satan's Fall", "Curse of the Pharaohs", "A Corpse Without Soul", "Into the Coven" and "Evil"):
"MERCYFUL FATE is one of the two or three main bands that kind of shaped METALLICA's sound, along with, like, DIAMOND HEAD, and one one or two other bands. So back in '81-'82 when we were kind of getting our chops together, MERCYFUL FATE was one of the main inspirations, so when it came time to do some covers and pay some tribute to some of the people that paved our way, MERCYFUL FATE… I don't know how many of the people listening to us know who MERCYFUL FATE are, but some of the stuff's pretty nutty, as you know... So much of our, kind of, more progressive side comes from them, but I'm telling you when we covered that thing in — when was it? '97-'98 or whatever — I mean, watching Hetfield try to sing King Diamond stuff; it's like nine octaves above… where only birds can hear or whatever it is. That was quite a sight. But that was great. FATE have always been a huge thing in METALLICA's career. We actually had them out playing with us a couple of times in Europe, and had them up on stage with us — upside-down crosses and the whole thing. That's all good. [Laughs]"
On opening for THE ROLLING STONES:
"Yeah, it was last year — it was about a year and a half ago out here in San Francisco. We were in the middle of some chill time after the 'St. Anger' tour and one day it was like, 'The STONES wanna know if you wanna open for them in San Francisco,' and it was like, 'Duh, of course, we will. Just name the day and place and we'll be there.' We obviously hadn't opened for anybody for a few years but if you're gonna open for anybody, open for the STONES. I mean, c'mon!
"It's the second show — [we played] two shows [with THE ROLLING STONES] in a row — and some assistant with, like, five walkie-talkies and a water-bottle holder, whatever, comes in before the show and says, 'Do you want your picture taken with THE ROLLING STONES?' We were like, 'You know what? Sure. Why not?' So after our show and then they're getting ready to go on, this assistant comes in and says, 'OK, be ready in five minutes' or whatever. So she comes in, she escorts us into this place in the tunnel leading into the stadium and she says, 'Wait here.' As we're standing in this tunnel, literally, and this band EVERCLEAR — who were playing also — they were kind of like over there on their 'X'. So we're standing there and we go over and say 'Hello' to the guys in EVERCLEAR, 'Hey, how was your show?' And this assistant comes back and says, 'No. The guys in METALLICA stay here, and the guys in EVERCLEAR stay over here.' We were like, 'Whoaaah.' So then about five minutes later the STONES come in, and I swear they didn't stop — they slowed down their pace, or their walk, just slow enough to get, like, two or three pictures taken, two or three frames shot with EVERCLEAR, and then they came over to where we were standing waiting, and they all looked at us… No, actually, Charlie Watts said 'Hello' and I think Keith [Richards] nodded or something, and Mick [Jagger] looked like we were all gonna give him pneumonia or something — he had this disgusting look on his face. And then they slowed down long enough while the photographer took two or three frames, and then they walked off. And then the assistant came over and said, 'If the band approves the photo, we'll send you a copy.' That kind of sums up THE ROLLING STONES experience. [Laughs] But being up on stage, that was awesome and the legacy and the whole thing, but that kind of left me with a little bit of a strange taste in my mouth . . . If we ever pulled that, would you come and find me and shoot me? I mean, seriously? But it was a great night and getting a chance to just be part of… If you can sit there and tell your kids, 'I opened for IRON MAIDEN, I opened for DEEP PURPLE, and I opened for THE ROLLING STONES,' then you're pretty much good to go, you know what I mean?"
(Thanks: Johan Mörling)

I think they would switch if they were asked but you should also be taking into account it is Metallica's tour and playing less than headline on your own bill would be senseless no matter who the band opening is.
I think if Heaven & Hell asked Metallica to be on their tour they'd do the same thing.
I just can't see the folks in Heaven & Hell losing sleep over opening for Metallica,as known as they might be I think they recognize that the crowd as much as they may be loved is there to see Metallica and that it'd be only right if Metallica headlined so the crowd gets to a full 2-2 1/2 hours of Metallica instead of the usual 65-90 minutes given to the opening slot band.

Megadeth hasn't slowed down and Dave is just as old as they are. hell Dio hasn't slowed down and he's 63. age isn't an excuse to justify a band's lameness for the past decade and a half.
watch Some Kind of Monster and see how Lars acts when his crappy paintings sell for millions and he flaunts his money. Lars is an arrogant POS and his drumming isn't anything too special except some of his work on Justice.
Metallica has run out of fuel and now they are just getting by on fumes, but i will say i saw them live a few years back and i enjoyed the show very much. i can't say the same about any recent albums.

Lars really gets a bad rap for the Napster thing(which he was right on, btw....illegal dloading dumbasses aren't the forgiving type though apparantly) and for being somewhat pretentious sometimes. He isn't a complete douchebag, but when people get an opinion on you then its hard to change. Hopefully Metallica will play a few new songs on their tour this summer.....wish they'd hurry up with the album but oh well.

I listen to rock/metal music fore about 14 years and in that time I NEVER hear or read that some band appoint Rolling Stones as their influence (The Beatles on the other hand are totally different story)!
Look at them today and ask yourself - why rock is lost his edge?

I wasn't going to comment but then some douche said Metallica should open for Machine Head. I've seen a lot of shitty bands in my lifetime and Machine Head rank up there with the worst.
Machine Head are overrated trash, their new album blows, they suck live, and don't even belong in a conversation with such bands as Metallica, Heaven and Hell, Megadeth, etc. If you think they do, you know nothing about good metal.

actually jerry cantrell just played a solo gig, and i went over to say hi to lars. didn't want to talk to lars, but jerry introduced him. so i'm like, hi.. how's the bass player search going.... and i say how about joey vera? and he sneered at me and goes nnnta...
so jerry goes, "i haven't seen lars in a while, mind if we talk?"
so i'm cool with that, they leave in about two minutes, after i spent $15 on their drinks which they took two sips off.
jerry is cool every other time i've met him.
that wasn't the first time i've run in to lars, and that's why i don't like talking to him
i'm know i'm not the only one with a lars or james story like that... he's not foolin me, or anyone else who's met him.
lars is the type of guy who'll talk at you constantly standing on his heels (short little dwarf) hoping to see somebody more important

Do yourselves a favor and check out Exile on Mainstreet, Sticky Fingers, Beggars Banquet, and Let it Bleed. These albums are what I grab when I've overdosed on metal. The Stones have some horrible music, but after playing for forty years that can be expected. All of you young teenagers who haven't had a chance to get sick of the scene will probably hate them but I believe most of the 20 somethings that respect other genres will appreciate the four cd's I mentioned. Fucking classic stuff up there with any Zeppelin cd. Download Gimme Shelter, Sister Morphine, Stray Cat Blues, and Rocks Off for a taste of Rock N Roll Bliss.

Metallica has clearly lost its fastball over the last decade and a half. Down, however, is coming back with a vengeance with the H/H, Megadeth tour and their solo dates not to mention the III album!
This also proves that Pantera was such a better band than Metallica the whole time.

I think from what i've heard that Sticky Fingers is perhaps their only truly great record others such as aftermath, exile on main street, let it bleed and beggars banquet are good but a tad overrated, to much filler IMO. also such records like black and blue are pretty average as they have amazing tracks e.g. hand of fate and crap reggae and funk songs which is not what you want to hear from the stones.

For me, "....And Justice for All" was the last album I liked by Metallica. Just personal taste. Yes, we can debate the "age" scenario all day. I will say that they will always be bigger than big, no matter what they do. The part of Metallica that impresses me is that we always here "James this and Lars that"..... Kirk just sits back out of the public eye and I like that. Eventho I am not a big fan of them much anymore, I am always interested in what they are up to. Maybe it's hope that they find the fountain of youth just ONE time.
Maybe it's James voice (as he gets older) that i struggle with. Either way, I am more than certain he isn't losing sleep over what I like or dislike.

I was a fan before Jason was in the band and was a fan afterwards....... but since Jason was the source of how I got my passes I can only speculate why I got nothing since! Maybe Metallica has to do the full band "meet & greet" after the fallout from St Anger & SKOM (which was the last straw for me!) to hold their fan base but I can say they sure as fuck wasn't all at the meet & greets and aftershows for a very long time!
Lars has a lot of room to criticize the actions of The Stones when he is just as guilty of the "Rock Star Attitude" to his own fanbase!

I've met people who have went to most Metallica gigs in Rochester or the surrounding areas around it sometimes going as far as to Europe or Asia to see Metallica.
Everyone I've met says they don't see the "Rockstar" attitude with Lars or anyone else in the band and by the far the worst of the Rock Star attitudes was Jason who wasn't a bad guy but always seemingly out for himself.
James, atleast to the best of my knowledge has left quite a few shows on the last few tours they've done with Rob from 2003 TO 2006 with writers cramp from signing so many autographs.
One particular girl I'm friends with has said that when she won backstage passes to see Metallica in Buffalo a few years back it was like she was meeting her long lost brothers for the first time and that they didn't act like a band at all more like 4 guys just randomly jamming and thinking nothing of Metallica at the moment solely there to mingle with fans.
Another guy I've drank with and worked with was part of the stage crew in Buffalo and when they were finishing up setting things up for Metallica's show in Buffalo (same one the girl went to) everyone in the set up/road crew was brought back to catering for some grub and drinks,a very generous thing that Metallica wasn't really entitled to do but did it because they wanted everyone happy.
Sounds really "Rock Star" to me.

....after telling his kids about all the big acts they opened up for, he can also tell them that they also started making great albums again after St.Anger. Rick Rubin is a great producer and I really hope he helps this band out. I have never heard a Rick Rubin produced album that was shitty.

Wow......must be nice to live in the diluted world you live in.
Jason and Cliff are the only 2 members of Metallica EVER to sign autographs without the MEDIA being present. The only reason the others do it NOW is because of the backlash. I've given Jason demo tapes of my band everytime Metallica played here and everytime I received a handwritten letter back from him, telling me that while it isn't Chophouse material, to keep playing what I love and it will work out in the end.
Now James and Lars are the ones who are only out for themselves. They remind me of politicans.......forget the people who got them to where they are at, only looking at what a new demographic can do for their careers. The only thing missing is the baby kissing and the tickertape parades!!!!!

OK can someone explain something to me whats wrong with lars' napster thing? I mean just cuz he had the balls to do it doesnt make it wrong. Of course having all we want for free would be ideal, but unfortunately thats not how it works, theres money involved. So downloading music, IS stealing. Sorry. I mean what youre gonna try to argue with that?? And btw just cuz lars has millions already doesnt mean shit, theres countless artists out there who need people to buy their music, and lars was supporting that.

Pretty good point you made. Lars himself has expressed his regret on the whole thing recently. He admitted that he was too pushy and if he could have known all the negative effect of it firsthand, he might have acted differently. But I still respect them for standing up for what they believe.

The people who says Metallica have this Rockstar attitude so dont know the band Metallica.
James is like the ordinary guy, always showing up to talk to fans and signing stuff. Lars is just this funny dude who talks alot and always welcome a chat. Kirk is quiet but thats how he is personally. Rob is cool as hell.
Very down to earth people who always takes time for the fans. You cant say that about other bands. Ive been a fan of Metallica for such a long time that i know they are very far away being asshole rockstars.
WHICH OTHER BAND SETS UP A MEET&GREET FOR EVERY SHOW? WHICH BAND HAS A PERSONAL TOURWEBSITE INVITING THE FANS TO FOLLOW THEM ON THE ROAD? Which other band records every show they do to let the fans download the shows? Aside from RATM, no band as far as i know.
Oh, and the Napster thing. You people just dont get it. Metallica did something billion other bands didnt dare to do.

I was at the second day of the sf show. Stones sucked so bad we left early. Ive never seen such a boring band. It felt like they weren't into it and they really dont have any talent. I'll never know why people can like a band without distortion or anything clever. Yeh Lars is cool so all you haters just dont respond with the same shit because it's really an annoying trend around here. I dont even know why you guys would talk shit about Alice in Chains anyway???

But they really seam to care about their fans, they have one on the best fan clubs there is because they have control of it I have always gotten excellent seats through it and some other cool shit. I have alway met them one a couple of occasions once after a show about 12 of us waiting outside till they left the roadies gave us picks while we waited and they came out in a van stopped and signed everything we wanted them to sign even asked if there was anything else and talked to us a bit. I met james and lars after they did an interview at a radio station and they were nice as hell very down to earth signed whatever you wanted signed again.
I have joined other fan clubs of some other large arena type bands and have gotten shitty seats and a lousy tea shirt and that was it but with mettallica they treat there fans right.

I loved all their albums..I can listen to em all except reload really. st anger was bad but i think people really really underestimate Load. If Mama Said wasn't on that album maybe you guys would have some respect for that album. Ive been listening to them for awhile and I listen to it more than Black! I might be wrong but King Nothing could be put on justice or lightning anything from before really black to be honest. I dont think kill em all but it does kinda sound in the area they shouldve have went on. Aint my bitch is kick ass as well. I think somewhere there will be another song on their next album like Bitch. James said it himself he noticed while touring St anger songs werent getting over, there was no energy he felt with the songs. I tell you if they follow the pace of the heavy stuff on Load with lyrics on Black it will be great. Im not considering them doing fuckin kill em all but the formula itself is possible. I know we want another Master but, i think a resemblance of what they were to come is for sure they will put as many riffs into a song as possible. If thats not good enough thank god there fucking bringing back the solos!!! That for any Metallica fan knows Metallica is making babysteps(maybe bigger steps then said?) back where everybody wants them to be. Its tough being a metallica fan but, for some reason there a rare band that has the right forumla. It didn't mattered who listened and who cared but all in all Metallica has gave there life out to you people. Those guys are truly very very nice and down to earth. The internet is telling you to think and its sad a lot of people dont have their own voice to themselves.

Personally I think metallica should just do one last hurrah. One last thrash metal album that really plays up to their first. Not like that last piece of shit they came out with. Newsted should probably rejoin metallica if he's not going anywhere with his so-called new band Supernova. And for the record I actually got to see Megadeth live in concert and they were awesome, especially the part when nearly every body in the venue were chanting metallica sucks. Im sure it didn't hurt Mustaines ego too badly. Has anybody heard their new albumn by the way? How is it?
