Interview by Jeff Treppel Megadeth’s latest CD, TH1RT3EN, is in stores today (get it on iTunes or in your local Best Buy). It's singer/guitarist/songwriter Dave Mustaine's 13th studio release since forming the band, and it comes on the heels of a series of dates with thrash's Big Four (Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax make up the other three), a headlining slot on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival Tour...and extensive back surgery.
The December 2011 issue of Decibel magazine features a cover story on Megadeth, including in-depth interviews with Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, and Chris Broderick. Mustaine talks honestly about his recent health issues, but also expresses genuine - and frankly justified - pride in the band's brand-new album TH1RT3EN, which will be in stores November 1. Describing the process of working with Johnny K, a producer who'd previously made records for Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold, Mustaine says, "you gotta understand, I'd never heard of this dude before, and he didn't seem very metal to me at all.
Story by Jeff Treppel Megadeth have written one classic metal anthem after another since the mid-'80s, from the title track from Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? to “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due,” “Hangar 18,” “Symphony of Destruction,” and many, many more. These are the songs audiences scream for whenever the band tours.

Ready for a real head-crushing Halloween. Then gear up for Megadeth in all their metal glory, live in Hollywood, CA on Monday, October 31 on ABC-TV's Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where they'll perform on the show's outdoor stage. The next day (11/1/11), the legendary and influential group--singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine, drummer Shawn Drover, guitarist Chris Broderick and bassist David Ellefson--will release TH1RT3EN (Roadrunner Records), which features the volcanic single "Public Enemy No 1." The band's 13th studio album has already been hailed by Revolver magazine as "Megadeth's best and most vital album of the 21st century (11/11)," while Spin cited the band's continued relevance: "Mustaine's fevered tirades bemoaning the state of the world feel utterly apt, given today's headlines: 'We the People' clearly belongs on the apocalypse's official soundtrack" (10/10/11). In November, Megadeth will head to South America for--appropriately--13 headlining shows in nine countries, beginning November 9 and wrapping December 1 (see tour dates below). In 2012, they will re-launch their critically acclaimed package festival Gigantour for the first time since 2008.
Interview by Jeff Treppel Megadeth's upcoming CD, TH1RT3EN, is bassist David Ellefson's first since leaving the band after 2002's The World Needs a Hero. The new album's combination of powerhouse thrash and anthemic hard rock allows him to demonstrate the fluid, malleable style that's made him one of the most respected bassists on the metal scene.
Megadeth's guitarist and bassist, Chris Broderick and Dave Ellefson, are currently conducting a six-date Jackson Guitars mini-tour, giving clinics in multiple states. Footage from the first two clinics is below.
Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson was interviewed by Troy Bradley of the show "The Witching Hour" when the band hit Atlanta on this past summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival Tour. During the conversation, Ellefson discusses the extremely fast recording sessions for the band's upcoming album TH1RT3EN, the whole history of the cover art to their recently reissued Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? (as well as the history of the band's Vic Rattlehead mascot, which we discussed here the other day), and his feelings upon returning to the band in 2010. Here's the video:
