SLAYER's KING On Touring Australia With MEGADETH: 'They're Like Ghosts To Us' - Oct. 14, 2009
Tom Valcanis of The Metal Forge conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King during the band's recently completed Australian tour with MEGADETH. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On touring Australia with MEGADETH:

"It's been great. I mean, I've been so fuckin' busy. I mean, we've been so busy we haven't even been hanging out after the shows. After we're done, everyone [from MEGADETH has] gone. I've never toured with them before; I'm not sure about their m.o., but yeah. They're like ghosts to us."

On rumors that SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya said in a recent interview that the band's new record, "World Painted Blood", would likely be their third last album before SLAYER hung up their boots and rested their necks permanently:

"I don't even know where that came from. Tom must have said something because I keep fielding questions about it. I don't even know what that means. We don't sit down and talk about shit like that; I hear stuff from the press, but who knows. It could be three; it could just be this one and the next one. It all depends on how long it takes between records. If it takes too long then yeah, the clock's ticking.

"I think it stemmed from [previous record] 'Christ Illusion', because it took us five years to make. I mean, I even said if it takes another five years to make a record, it'll probably be the last one; I mean it'll be ten years with only two records done. But this one was done in three and the next one will be done in hopefully two or three. I'm having fun, and the live show's awesome and we're making up great tunes, kids are coming and having a great fuckin' time."

On the fact that "World Painted Blood" features four different "panels" of a world map on each individual CD, each sold separately (due to pressures from American retailers for "exclusive" content):

"I know fans are crazy and they'll go out and buy them all, but I'd be like, Oh, I got one, it's got all the songs on it, it's all I need.' But a lot of the retailers in America wanted exclusives on songs. Instead of wasting songs in my eyes, Dave [Lombardo, drummer] came up with this idea of why don't we take [the artwork] and split it into four. I mean, what have we got in America; [alternative/underground store] Hot Topic wants their own version, [electronics retailer] Best Buy wants their own version; you know, I'm not going to waste songs like that. I mean, if people are buying songs they should be able to buy the collection. I mean there are two left over though and I'm sure they'll end up on a deluxe edition or a video game or a movie soundtrack somewhere along the line. It was a way of not wasting songs and keeping the retailers happy."

On the claim that they were "responsible for the creation of death metal":

"Well, the thing that I am more proud of than that, well, in my history anyway was bringing the metal and the punk crowd together. I think we were instrumental in that. I remember if you were at a metal show, there were no punk kids there. We were a kind of band that both 'factions' liked. It was trying to get them to co-exist, you know. D.R.I. was a big part of that too, and I think that's important. I mean it might be important to death metal fans and that's great, but I'm not a huge fan of death metal. It's just not my thing."

ALICE IN CHAINS Drummer: 'The Music Has Taken On A Life Of Its Own' - Oct. 14, 2009
Ireland's RTÉ.ie recently conducted an interview with ALICE IN CHAINS members William DuVall (vocals) and Sean Kinney (drums). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

RTÉ.ie: A lot of bands get back together and it sounds very after the after the fact. With you, it sounds like unfinished business.

Kinney: We never had a problem making music. We had a problem managing our lives. We had a problem [due to] living really hard. Music was so easy for us. And what's so great for us is that it's the same kind of vibe nowadays. We're all in the same headspace and do this for the same reasons and that's still intact.

We just lived really hard and did some things personally that started to get into the way of doing the one thing that we really loved, so we just stopped showing up. It's been 14 years, that's 5,076 days, since we put out a record. A lot of time has passed and I'm excited and it's great to have something to be excited about [and] that you care so much about.

RTÉ.ie: It must be very draining, though, in interviews for people to focus on the past.

Kinney: Yeah, that's part of it though, y'know? That's part of the game. I don't come in here with some idea that that's not... And the easy way to remedy that is to be in a band that makes albums about 'chicks and cars and partying'. But that's just not how we operate. Everything is pretty much real life kind of topics.

The thing that gets old is that so much [focus] gets put on the drugs. And I can understand that, but that's not a unique story, that's a very common story. All of our songs are not about drugs — maybe about 15% of our music was about that. It's easy to put a label on something and that's what people do.

Hopefully the label they put on this album is about moving on. This is a more universal theme to me. This is about loss that we have all experienced in our lives or will experience and getting out of that place and moving forward into a better way. That's all you can ask for, that's all you can do.

RTÉ.ie: There will always be fans who love the old records that you're not going to reach.

DuVall: And that's OK. This is an invitation and you don't have to take it. But it's an invitation that's coming from a really, really truthful and very, very profound place. I think the people that take it and the people that show up to the party are going to really be rewarded. And they have been rewarded, and they're digging it.

Kinney: Seeing Will just give his all every night and going at it and turning people around who have a closed mind [as to] why we're doing this is amazing. I understand [fans have] a little bit of fear and that people connected to the records we've done so strongly and I honor that completely. But it's a little rude for people who listen to those records and bond with them to try to pass judgment on us and say we don't have the right to do something.

The truth is that all of these things that they care about so much didn't happen to them: it actually happened to us. It was actually our real life. My friend's dead and I live with that every day. We've all lost people and everybody will in life. And just because you loved our record so much doesn't mean you can't move on. If we can find a way to move on and they can't then I just kind of feel sorry for people at that point. This happened to us and we can move on with our heads up and are doing it in the most honorable and genuine fashion. And you can't because you just listened to a record? That's a little sad.

RTÉ.ie: One thing I've always been struck by during the years you were away is the amount of goodwill rock fans have towards ALICE IN CHAINS.

Kinney: That's been one of the amazing things. The music lived on. We didn't serve it. We weren't out there trying to sell it, work it or anything. The music on its own merit and what we had done when we started this thing took on a life of its own and you can't make that happen. A record company can't make that happen. They can put their whole machine behind a song that you may not like that gets it on the radio and they play it all day long. But will that song still be played 10 or 20 years down the road on its own?

I think it's the greatest reward that the music has taken on a life of its own and been passed onto another generation. So now when we do these shows a lot of these people weren't even born when our first record came out and it means something to them.

RTÉ.ie: That's very special.

Kinney: There was no reason why we had to do this. It was for real, genuine belief and caring. For me part of the reason [in making the album] is showing that horrible stuff happens everybody in their life and that you need to get up and you need to move on. And how do you do that respectfully and truthfully?

And another thing is to take what Jerry [Cantrell, guitarist], Layne [Staley, late singer], Mike Starr [former bassist] and I created when we were teenagers and bring that thing that has taken on a life of its own — and we're not all here to be part of it — to these people. That's important to me. They connected with it and the whole thing gets to move forward. It's not like we shut the door on that part of our life. That's forever a huge part of our life. That door always remains open.

DuVall: And new friendships come into play and new bonding takes place. That comes out of the same honest place that all their previous music came out of. It's no different. Cantrell and I go back 10 years. We were friends first and that friendship evolved finally to a point where it's led to us sitting here talking about a new ALICE IN CHAINS record — because of that three years of touring that we did starting in '06. That's where Mike Inez [bassist], Sean, myself and Cantrell all fused together as a unit and became a hell of band in our own right. That journey is what you're hearing as well on this album. It's as much about the present and the future as it is about honoring the past. And it is about people's memories as regards to music: it becomes the soundtrack to people's lives. That's stuff you can't plan that becomes an incredible reward.

SATYRICON Drummer Interviewed By FULL METAL ROCK; Audio Available - Oct. 14, 2009
Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal of Full Metal Rock conducted an interview with drummer Kjetil-Vidar "Frost" Haraldstad of Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON before the band's October 8, 2009 performance at the Key Club in West Hollywood California. The chat is now available for streaming at this location.

SATYRICON vocalist Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven recently told AOL's Noisecreep that the group plans to halt all road activities after its current North American tour. "We started touring and haven't stopped," he said. "We did Japan and Australia, then the U.S. Then we did an extensive of the Nordic countries and had a few weeks off and then went right into festival season, which ran from May through September.

"We've been off for a week and we're going back on tour for a month. November is off, with only one show, so it'll be quiet. Christmas will be it for quite some time. It'll take something special for us to go out in 2010. We need a break, since we've been going for a long time. We feel motivated to do a full headline tour of the States right now."

SATYRICON released a special-edition, two-CD version of its critically acclaimed latest album, "The Age Of Nero", on September 29 via E1 Music (formerly KOCH Records). The bonus material on this special "The Age Of Nero" package has never been available in North America before. Featuring eight live and rare recordings, this set is a must-have for SATYRICON fans.

Capital Chaos has uploaded video footage (see below) of SATYRICON's October 9, 2009 performance at The Boardwalk in Orangevale, California. Also on the bill were MALEVOLENT, TOXIC HOLOCAUST and CHTHONIC.

NILE's SANDERS Says Record Label Is Planning Legal Action Against Journalist That Leaked Album - Oct. 14, 2009
Guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders of Southern Carolina-based extreme technical death metallers NILE is pissed that the band's new album, "Those Whom the Gods Detest", has been leaked. As was the case with CONVERGE's "Axe to Fall" album, the NILE leak has been traced back to a journalist.

"Amongst your brethren, there is a betrayer," Sanders tells AOL's Noisecreep. "In fact, Nuclear Blast [NILE's record label] knows exactly who it was. It was the same guy who leaked the HYPOCRISY record. So, yeah, it was a journalist, a music journalist that leaked the record. Now, come on man ... don't we all have the struggle in this day and age, trying to eke out a living, playing music or writing about music?

"So, the idea that one of our own ... one our own brethren is the guy that stuck a knife in our heart ... I have trouble believing it, man. A couple days after I found that out, I had a little trouble doing interviews, because, in the back of my mind, it was like, 'Is this the guy? Should I be killing this guy instead of talking nice to him?' It took a while to put it all into perspective."

He continued, "I believe [the label] is planning legal action, and I think that's what's going to have to happen. You can't penalize someone for downloading it. You don't hate on the fans because of it. I think it's going to take recourse on the responsible people ... if we're not going to police our own, and hold our comrades and colleagues up to high moral standards, then what can we expect? It's up to us to not only try and behave ethically, but to call out others when they engage in unethical behavior."

NILE recently released the first taste of "Those Whom the Gods Detest". Produced and mixed by Neil Kernon (NEVERMORE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, QUEENSRŸCHE), along with a drum-recording job by Erik Rutan (CANNIBAL CORPSE, VITAL REMAINS, GOATWHORE), the CD features the band's strongest production and perhaps its best material to date. The cover artwork was created by Michal "Xaay" Loranc, whom NILE guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders had previously worked with on his second solo album, "Saurian Exorcisms".

The song "Permitting the Noble Dead to Descend to the Underworld" is now available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.

Sanders told Revolver magazine earlier in the year that the band's sixth full-length album will likely be NILE's most eclectic offering to date. "We're going to some very unexpected places," he said. "I've been listening to some oud music [the oud is a Middle Eastern lute — Ed.], Iranian music, and some Hindu stuff, and that stuff's definitely rubbing off on the new songs."

"Those Whom the Gods Detest" is scheduled for a November 3 North American release via Nuclear Blast Records.

Former DEATH/MASSACRE Guitarist RICK ROZZ Launches M INC. - Oct. 14, 2009
M INC., the new Orlando, Florida-based band featuring former DEATH/MASSACRE guitarist Rick "Rozz" DeLillo, will contribute an exclusive track, "Angel of Descent", to the upcoming Fall of Eden Records compilation "Fallen Souls". Due on October 31, the CD will feature 14 other bands, including GORE SANCTUM (U.K.), MISCONDÜCTERS (U.K.) and MORDETH (Brazil).

M INC., which is putting the finishing touches on its first demo, was formed earlier this year by Rozz, Terry Shrock (SHINE) on vocals and bass and Mike Mazzonetto (ex-PAIN PRINCIPLE) on drums. The group is said to be Rick's first foray into extreme music since the mid-'90s and his MASSACRE days. Indeed, the band was initially supposed to be called MASSACRE INC., but out of respect to MASSACRE's drummer Bill Andrews and a desire to not live in the past, the name was changed to M INC.

Over the past decade, Rick has played in a number of other projects, including southern rock and acoustic bands.

Rozz was a member of the pre-DEATH band MANTAS alongside Chuck Schuldiner and Kam Lee and played on DEATH's seminal and unforgettable "Leprosy" album. As part of MASSACRE, he helped produce those massively influential demos that set the '80s tape trading scene alight and the classic album "From Beyond", not to mention the superb EP "Inhuman Condition".

Fans just have to purchase the app at the iPhone store and log onto their account at LiveMetallica.com to access every gig they've downloaded, as well as a free stream of the band's latest concert. More developments and features are also on the way.

METALLICA has added single-song downloads to the LiveMetallica.com web site. Instead of buying only entire concerts, fans can pick whatever individual songs they want from any concert they choose from. Every song that the band has recorded in concert since 2004, covering a span of 269 shows, is available for 99 cents per MP3. Full shows are still $9.95 as MP3 files and $12.95 as higher-quality FLAC files.

LiveMetallica.com was launched in March 2004 and makes downloads available for purchase of every show the band has played since then, often within hours of the gig's finale.

More than 300,000 downloads have been purchased at the site since its launch.

The "Vault" section of the site offers free downloads of shows recorded before 2004.

CARMINE APPICE To Guest On ALICE COOPER's Radio Show - Oct. 14, 2009
Legendary drummer and philanthropist Carmine Appice was recently interviewed by Alice Cooper for the "Nights with Alice Cooper" radio show to support the recent GUITAR ZEUS CD release, "Conquering Heroes". The interview is scheduled to run on Alice's show on Tuesday, October 20 as part of the annual Halloween celebration broadcasts.

"It was great talking with Alice for the interview for GUITAR ZEUS," affirms Appice. "We go back to the 60's when Alice opened up for VANILLA FUDGE. Alice told me he loves projects like my GUITAR ZEUS because it is different than just a band and he loves to play them. He said he is gonna rock with GUITAR ZEUS on his show. He also asked me to get involved with his charity foundation to help inner city kids. I said I would love to."

Fuel Records released the new GUITAR ZEUS CD, "Conquering Heroes", on August 25. The double-disc set, which features 24 of the best GUITAR ZEUS songs, showcases the prolific talents of many world-renowned rock guitarists, including Brian May, Ted Nugent, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Richie Sambora, and many more.

Author, clinician, drummer, philanthropist... Carmine Appice first came to prominence as the percussionist with the late 1960s psychedelic band VANILLA FUDGE. He contributed distinctive background harmonies with bassist Tim Bogert, adding to the group's high decibel sonic assault. After five albums, Appice and Bogert left VANILLA FUDGE to form the blues rock quartet CACTUS with vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty. Eventually, Appice left CACTUS with Bogert to join Jeff Beck in the power trio BECK, BOGERT & APPICE, and then later joined Rod Stewart's backing band in 1977, co-writing hit songs such as "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Young Turks". In 1978, Appice played drums on Paul Stanley's first solo album. He was a member of KGB featuring Ray Kennedy, Rick Grech, Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, and has recorded with Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and PINK FLOYD. He was the drummer for the bands KING KOBRA and BLUE MURDER, and toured with Ozzy Osbourne.

Appice first created GUITAR ZEUS in 1995 when he recruited some of the most famous guitarists in the world to be a part of his project, from Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent to Brian May (QUEEN) and Slash (GUNS N' ROSES), even tennis legend John McEnroe. Songs also included guest vocals by Doug Pinnick and Edgar Winter. Throughout the late 1990s, three GUITAR ZEUS CDs were released to worldwide critical acclaim.

"GUITAR ZEUS, for me, was an amazing experience, working with so many great guitarists", Appice states. "It was fun picking out songs for each. Each guitarist loved the songs. It was awesome. I would do it again in a minute even though it was a lot of work. I consider these drum tracks to be some of my best drum performances in my career!"

CHILDREN OF BODOM's LAIHO To Play Guitar For HYPOCRISY - Oct. 14, 2009

Alexi will temporarily fill the currently vacant guitarist spot on the trek, which will also include headliners ENSIFERUM alongside EX DEO, BLACKGUARD and SWASHBUCKLE.

"There will be no shortage of alcohol on this tour, that's for sure."

GENE SIMMONS: 'I'm The King Of The World' - Oct. 14, 2009
Kate Fillion of Macleans.ca recently conducted a lengthy interview with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

Macleans.ca: You're currently touring with KISS. Do girls line up at the stage door every night?

Simmons: Oh yeah.

Macleans.ca: Aren't groupies boring after a while?

Simmons: Well, you're a woman, so you don't understand the psyche. It's like a vegetarian asking a carnivore, "What's the big deal with meat?" Look, you only drop two eggs a month, and in your middle years you stop dropping them completely. We manufacture hundreds of millions of sperm every day. We even make sperm after we're dead.

Macleans.ca: If you're saying it's a biological imperative to sleep with groupies—

Simmons: A biological urge. The urge to merge.

Macleans.ca: Then why stay with Shannon [Tweed, Simmons' longtime girlfriend]?

Simmons: This is the hottest woman on earth. And she's an alpha female. She doesn't talk about whether the vacuum cleaner works or not. Doesn't sweat the small stuff. Has a strong moral centre, no drugs, no booze. No whining. No bad hair days.

Macleans.ca: Is it okay if she sleeps with other men?

Simmons: People will do whatever they want to do. So it's best to just relax and hope for the best. Get a hobby.

Macleans.ca: It's clear on the show that your kids love their mother very much. Does it bother them that you're not monogamous?

Simmons: Who said I'm not?

Macleans.ca: Well, you do. Don't you?

Simmons: No, not necessarily. And I'm not sure Bill Clinton or anyone else should be talking about those areas to strangers. Aren't you ever going to ask me about KISS?

Macleans.ca: Why are you stalling?

Simmons: Look, it's the 21st century, and the thing women have been clamoring for is finally upon us: you're free. You're no longer indentured slaves. You no longer have to be in the kitchen, or leave the smoking room so the men can talk. And the greatest asset Shannon has is that she's a modern woman. Besides being stunning, six feet tall and, of course, a Newfie, I worship the ground she walks on. But part of the relationship is that it's no-nonsense. We don't call each other "honey" and "sweetheart” and all those clichés. That's television talk, just a paint-by-numbers relationship. When I talk to her, it's straight ahead, like an equal partner, and she to me.

Macleans.ca: A tape surfaced on the Internet last year, of you having sex with another woman. Were your kids upset?

Simmons: We talked about it a little bit, but they understand. It was made a long time ago, and not with my consent. But?.?.?.?move on. Why do people care?

Macleans.ca: How do you talk to your daughter about all this?

Simmons: Hopefully, the one thing I gave Sophie was the clear information that she should never define herself by men. Women's magazines are ego-destroying, the worst piece of trash you can read. Here's why: they feed the insecurities and weaknesses of women. There are always lists: "10 things he likes about you," "10 things to look younger" — this endless self-torture. Men's magazines never, ever talk about what women want. Men don't care.

Macleans.ca: So would it bother you if she said, "I'm going to be like you, Dad, and have thousands of sexual partners?"

Simmons: Once Sophie becomes a mature woman, it doesn't matter what we think or say, these will be decisions she has to make and live with. But of course there's a double standard.

Macleans.ca: Does being 60 feel the way you thought it would?

Simmons: I don't mean this to sound cornball, but I don't really celebrate birthdays. I mean, yes, I eat cake — God help me, do I eat cake — but I celebrate every day above ground as the best holiday there is. I don't wait for the calendar to tell me to celebrate. But I will tell you that it’s surprising how fantastic 60 is.

Macleans.ca: What's so fantastic about it?

Simmons: I'm the king of the world. Are you kidding?

DAVE MUSTAINE: Why MEGADETH's 'Endgame' Is Better Than METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' - Oct. 14, 2009
The September 2009 issue of U.K.'s Terrorizer magazine (see cover image below) includes an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine conducted by Jenn Selby. An excerpt from the chat follows.

Terrorizer: Is [MEGADETH's new album] "Endgame" better than [METALLICA's latest CD] "Death Magnetic"?

Mustaine: "Yes."

Terrorizer: Why?

Mustaine: "To me, one sounds like a record and the other sounds like a jam. Plus we have two lead guitar players. In METALLICA you've got one [referring to Kirk Hammett. — Ed], and he ripped me off anyway.

"I was just speaking to Lars [Ulrich, METALLICA drummer] about the [Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame thing [Mustaine was invited to attend METALLICA's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in April, but didn't get inducted along with his former bandmates. — Ed.], and I said, 'You know what?! I don't give a fuck about you anymore.'

"I used to have this thing that I was secretly pining over one day, getting up there and playing with them again. And I'm thinking, what song would I play? And how could I even stand it?

"I like playing with guys who can keep time.

"I've heard people say that some of the best METALLICA songs they ever heard was when the guy from SLIPKNOT was playing the drums." (SLIPKNOT's Joey Jordison famously sat in for Ulrich when the METALLICA drummer fell ill and could not make it to U.K.'s Download festival in the summer of 2004.)

Mustaine was a member of METALLICA for around 11 months before being dismissed in 1983 and replaced by Hammett. He did not play on any METALLICA albums and did not attend their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this year.

Mustaine went on to form MEGADETH. The band's 12th studio album, "Endgame", was released in September.

EXODUS Forced To Stop Venezuela Show After Crowd Breaks Barricade; Video Available - Oct. 14, 2009
San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS were forced to halt their show last night (Tuesday, October 13) in Maracay, Venezuela for around 15 minutes after the crowd reportedly went nuts and broke the barricade in front of the stage.

Fan-filmed video footage of the incident, which occurred during the song "Fabulous Disaster", can be viewed below. (Note: EXODUS vocalist Rob Dukes can be seen/heard asking for the rest of the band to stop playing around the 3:30 mark.)

EXODUS is currently touring Mexico and South America with German thrashers KREATOR.

Nuclear Blast Records has set a January 15 release date for "Shovel Headed Tour Machine (Live At Wacken And Other Assorted Atrocities)" from EXODUS. The package will contain the band's July 2008 performance at Germany's Wacken Open Air festival, plus a documentary following the band through the last five years of touring as well as bonus footage, with photo galleries and all of the group's promotional videos. The set will consist of two DVDs plus an audio CD of the Wacken performance.

The German edition of Metal Hammer magazine conducted an interview with EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt at this year's installment of the Graspop Metal Meeting, which was held on June 26-28, 2009 on the festival grounds of the Boeretang in Dessel, Belgium.

When asked about EXODUS' plans for a new studio album, Holt said, "Hopefully we're hitting the studio around November 1 with Mr. Sneap [British producer Andy Sneap; MEGADETH, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY]. It's gonna be sick. We have four [songs] recorded [and left over] from the last session [for 2007's 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A'], and I've got, like, nine [other tracks] I'm working on, and Lee [Altus, guitar] has a bunch of stuff. But this next album is gonna blow people's minds."

Regarding the upcoming CD's musical direction, Holt said, "There's a couple of twists on this. I try not to repeat every album. I mean, we did 'Tempo Of The Damned' [2004], [which was] a little more old-school, and we did 'Shovel Headed Kill Machine' [2005], which was really brutal and fast, and then 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A' [2007], [which] was, like, longer and more epic songs. So this album's gonna have some different stuff to it. Maybe a little more dual-guitar stuff, 'cause I've been playing with Lee for quite awhile now — a little more dual-guitar harmony shred stuff. "

MINISTRY's JOURGENSEN Discusses Upcoming Solo Album, Other Projects; Audio Available - Oct. 14, 2009
Brett Milano of RockBand.com recently conducted an interview with Al Jourgensen, the "musical terrorist " behind MINISTRY, REVOLTING COCKS, and many edgy solo projects. The entire 16-minute chat can be streamed using the audio player below. It is also available in text format at this location. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow.

RockBand.com: What sort of indoctrination do you give when musicians come into one of your bands?

Jourgensen: Basically, when we do rehearsals, it's boot camp, man. You eat, sleep, and s**t MINISTRY. Okay? You rehearse sixteen hours a day, and then you drink the other eight. [laughs] It's pretty much like literally going to boot camp, only with alcohol. So if you can imagine that. We hole ourselves up. We usually rehearse in this place where we go out in the middle of the desert out here in El Paso, Texas and you just eat, drink, and sleep it for a month. It's a four-week training program and you gotta be pretty good to get through that. I'm pretty much a drill sergeant when it comes to that stuff. Like when Joey Jordison from SLIPKNOT toured with us, uh [he was] literally crying after two days. Just like, "Oh, this sucks." But afterwards he was like, "Man, that was awesome." Because then, when you get it so ingrained into your head, a month of sixteen hour rehearsals, you go on stage and there's nothing that could happen that would be a shock. There's nothing that you can't play through or work through. We used to even have f**kup practices. We'd spend one day a week just having roadies go on and purposely unplug stuff. [laughs] And make sure that we could pretty much handle any situation. It just makes it a lot easier when you actually tour that it's really second nature by then, you know?

RockBand.com: That's great. So, from the sound of things, not having MINISTRY anymore hasn't had any effect on how busy you are.

Jourgensen: No, it's actually worse now. So, so much for retirement. [laughs] I shouldn't say worse. It's better. I've just got so many projects going on. Between the all the 13th Planet stuff and I'm doing a solo record completely different from MINISTRY.

RockBand.com: Really?

Jourgensen: It's really almost kind of pop-y, acoustics and synths and orchestras. More like the old THE THE songs, or Nick Cave kind of stuff. There's absolutely no metal on there at all. And I'm working with Mark Thwaite who's playing guitar for Peter Murphy right now, but he's also been with MISSION UK and also was Tricky's guitar player. And the two of us are doing this solo album for me. Plus I've got REVCO [REVOLTING COCKS] on tour right now that I've gotta do three shows — L.A., Chicago, New York. I'm also getting this entire MINISTRY back catalogue together for future release dates. I'm updating them and doing remixes and stuff like that. And we've got other people that book my recording studio as well. We just had a project, uh, Sara Green, this girl out of Boston that sounds very PORTISHEAD-like. It's really cool. So there's always something going on here at the compound.

RockBand.com: When MINISTRY did the "Cover Up" album, it's coincidentally, I'm sure, but three of those songs are also in "Rock Band". So it was kind of nice to see there was a linkup there. Are you the kind of guy that will blast those classic rock songs when nobody's looking?

Jourgensen: Not even when nobody's looking. When everybody's looking. [laughs] I love that stuff. I grew up on that stuff. Our individual, our take on it from MINISTRY is it's fun to do. We have a gas with it. Everyone's like, "Well how did you pick the songs?" I'm like, "Well, we drank a lot of wine and beer and liquor and sat around and reminisced about songs that you knew when you grew up." It wasn't anything like we sat there and really scoured this list or anything. It was like whatever we were jammin' on while we were drunk. [laughs] It was pretty cool. And a couple of 'em happened by accident. Like "What A Wonderful World" was literally an accident that happened at a party that was over at the guest house where we're at. There was a party there. And there's an out of tune upright piano there. And we had a little limited PA system. And we kept the original piano and the original vocal, both one take with a party going on behind us in the middle of the whole thing. A lot of that stuff was just circumstance. My whole point of that record was just to remember that MINISTRY also rocked. We weren't all just politics and shaking our fist in the air against Republicans and conservatives and all that. It's like, you know what? We're also a rock band. And we have fun too. I know REVCO picks up a lot of that where people know we have a sense of humor and all that and we're a fun band. But people started getting with MINISTRY like, "Okay, enough already, okay?" So it was nice to go out on that note of just a party record.

RockBand.com: I wanted to ask, when you started doing industrial-type stuff, it was the '80s and a lot of the tools people have now didn't even exist then. So how much of a nightmare was it to get the sounds in your head and get them to exist in real life?

Jourgensen: To me it wasn't a nightmare at all. It was exciting. It was cool. It was like, nobody was doing this stuff. We'd go out with a little portable Sony Nagra and go to factories and stuff and take noises. And sit outside a train tracks and wait for a train to go by and get the wheels going and all that. We did a lot of on-site recording and stuff like that. Which now is just, you hit a button and you come up with a sample. You just tell the computer what you want and it's there. But back then it was kind of fun. It was kind of like half being an archeologist and half being a musician. [laughs] To me that was a gas. It wasn't a nightmare at all. And all the editing stuff that you can do on Pro Tools or so much different software right now. What used to take me two or three weeks, now you can do in about two or three hours. But back then it was fun. We didn't know any better. Hell, we were just hillbillies with samplers.

RockBand.com: So it was kind of more fun when it wasn't as easy to do, when you had to do all that kind of legwork?

Jourgensen: Exactly. Another thing, if you listen to music today, this is the interesting paradox that goes on here is that, back then there was very little equipment and yet every band sounded different. Nowadays every band sounds the same even though there's a ton of equipment. It doesn't really make sense to me, but whatever. That's what I'm seeing anyways.

NOCTURNAL RITES Scraps South American Tour Plans, Continues Work On New Material - Oct. 14, 2009
Swedish melodic metallers NOCTURNAL RITES have issued the following update:

"We are sorry to inform our South American fans that the [previously] announced tour will not happen. We are very sorry about this, but it was out of our hands and not our decision to make. We will try our best to organize something for next year. We have lined up a few other shows, though. More news on those at a later date."

NOCTURNAL RITES is currently writing material for the follow-up to 2007's "The 8th Sin". The band states, "We are slowly but steadily advancing and the new stuff is shaping up really nicely. We have some really dark and aggressive stuff written as well as some more melodic, so this new album will definitely cater to all aspects of the NOCTURNAL RITES legacy!

"We are really excited to record, but we've always said that we'll not rush things, so we'll take our time and make sure we are 100% on the money before we nail the songs in the studio."

NOCTURNAL RITES previously described the new songs as "a little back to the darker 'Afterlife' [2000] days mixed with some trademark NOCTURNAL RITES catchy melodies — those that can never go wrong!"

Guitarist Nils Norberg announced his departure from NOCTURNAL RITES in June 2008. "I have decided to lay down the guitar as my interest for music kind of cooled down the last years," he said in a statement. A replacement axeman has not yet been announced.

"The 8th Sin" in 2007 landed on the Japanese album chart at position No. 68 (No. 28 on "international" chart). An e-card for the CD is available at this location.

NOCTURNAL RITES' video for "Never Again", which was directed by the band's drummer Owe Lingvall of Village Road Films (WOLF, CARNAL FORGE, MORGANA LEFAY), can be viewed below.

AEROSMITH's BRAD WHITFORD At Volkswagon Jetta TDI Cup Race; Video Available - Oct. 14, 2009
AEROSMITH guitarist Brad Whitford was one of the guest drivers at last month's Jetta TDI Cup Pole at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. He competed alongside the other drivers in all track activities beginning with practice on Friday, September 25 and concluding with the race on Saturday, September 26.

Exclusive video footage of Brad at the event can be viewed below (courtesy of AeroForceOne).

"I've done some racing in the past, but today was a totally different experience for me," Whitford told Motorsport.com. "During the first session, I just wasn't comfortable, but thanks to the help of the other drivers and the series instructors, I was able to make some big strides in qualifying and had a lot of fun in the car. I wasn't nearly as quick as some of these young guns, but I was able to stay on track for the most part and didn't ruin anyone else's day, so I consider today a success."

Speaking to PaddockTalk, Whitford said, "This entire weekend was quite the experience for me. First of all, I was driving a totally different car than I have competed in before. Secondly, I have never raced in the rain. Add the two together, and it sounds like a recipe for disaster. However, I was able to keep the car on track and in one piece for the entire race. Considering the conditions, I was really amazed at how well these cars held up to the demands of racing. Several years ago, nobody would have guessed that you could race a diesel, but these Jetta TDIs are awesome little cars, and I think the fans that showed up early to the track today got a great show."
