- Aug. 11, 2009
ILMOEntertainment conducted an interview with STATIC-X frontman Wayne Static and Wayne's wife, former adult film star Tera Wray, on August 7, 2009 in Moline, Illinois during the "Pedal to the Metal" tour with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and MUDVAYNE. Watch the chat below.
STATIC-X is recording most of its live performances on the Pedal To The Metal tour and making them available to fans on a USB wristband for purchase at the STATIC-X merch booth right after the show. The USB sticks not only feature the night's performance audio but also a variety of exclusive bonus material put together by the band especially for their fans, such as a personal message to fans in the city of the show, a brand new picture gallery, several "Behind The Scenes – The Making of The Cult Of Static" video clips and links to related web sites.
"Cult of Static", the new album from STATIC-X, sold 19,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 16 on The Billboard 200 chart.
STATIC-X's previous CD, "Cannibal", opened with more than 30,000 copies back in April 2007 to land at No. 36. This represented a slight drop from the 35,000 tally registered by the band's "Start a War" album, which came out in June 2005 and debuted at No. 29.
As previously reported, STATIC-X has tapped drummer Will Hunt (EVANESCENCE, DARK NEW DAY, ex-SKRAPE, TOMMY LEE) to fill in for Nick Oshiro on the group's current tour. Hunt also appears in STATIC-X's new video for the song "Stingwray".
Oshiro is reportedly "taking a break" from STATIC-X, but has not officially left the band.

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER: New Video Interview With TREVOR STRNAD Available
- Aug. 11, 2009
Leah Coppola of Swigged! conducted an interview with vocalist Trevor Strnad of Michigan's unstoppable sons of molten melodic death metal THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER on July 24, 2009 at the Atlanta, Georgia stop of this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Watch the six-minute chat below.
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER will release "Deflorate", the follow-up to 2007's "Nocturnal", on September 15.
30-second audio samples of all the tracks that are set to appear on the CD are available for streaming at Amazon.de.
An epic expansion of the stunning pitch-black cacophony that was "Nocturnal", "Deflorate" boasts THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER's brand of seamlessly mixed Swedish influenced blackened thrash and pounding American death metal muscle, and sees one of metal's most outstanding underground outfits at the peak of its unmitigated musical brutality.
"We're more confident than ever," declares Strnad of "Deflorate". "I think, as a band, we really found our footing on 'Nocturnal'. This time, we've taken this beast to the next level."
"Deflorate" was produced by THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, Mark Lewis (DEICIDE) and Jason Suecof (BENEATH THE MASSACRE, JOB FOR A COWBOY), with mixing duties handled by Suecof. The album's first single, "A Selection Unnatural", is now available for streaming exclusively on RevolverMag.com.
Strnad stated about the "A Selection Unnatural" song, "I was watching some crazy shit on birth defects on the health channel and I wanted to try to recreate the feelings of horror and repulsion that people react with when seeing these kinds of unfortunate images. 'A Selection Unnatural' is meant to be a science-fiction shocker about the short life of a terribly deformed mutant of a child. From the moment he is born he is kept in labs and is regarded as a living medical marvel, poked and prodded by scientific minds wondering how such a being could come to be. How could such a thing occur in nature? Is he a human being like you and I? I was trying to find a balance between completely describing the creature and leaving a bit up to the imagination and let the listener decide exactly what it would look like. The person telling the story is meant to sound disgusted, a voice of sheer cruelty and indifference to the child's life. He wonders what the boy's purpose was on this earth, scoffing at his plight. The title is obviously a play on Darwin's theory of natural selection."
"Deflorate" track listing:
01. Black Valor 02. Necropolis 03. A Selection Unnatural 04. Denounced, Disgraced 05. Christ Deformed 06. Death Panorama 07. Throne Of Lunacy 08. Eyes Of Thousand 09. That Which Erodes The Most Tender 10. I Will Return

FREE REIGN: New Song Posted Online
- Aug. 11, 2009
FREE REIGN — the band featuring the Dallas Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo on lead vocals and guitar, right guard Leonard Davis on bass, backup guard Cory Procter on drums, and newcomer Justin Chapman on guitar — has posted a new song, "Tragedy", on the group's MySpace page.
FREE REIGN recently inked a worldwide deal with Australia's Riot! Entertainment. The group's debut EP — which will include "Tragedy" — is scheduled for release in November 2009.
Colombo and Procter are the original members of FREE REIGN. Last year, they set up inside the team's locker room for a mini-set that prompted Davis to learn the bass his wife bought him a few years ago. Chapman came in after hearing them play over the winter.
"This is an amazing opportunity for Riot! and to further establish our name internationally," said Riot! owner/CEO John Howarth. "FREE REIGN is a band with massive potential. There has been an enormous buzz surrounding them since they appeared on the scene a few months ago. FREE REIGN has already been flooded with endorsements. Their marketing potential is limitless. These guys are already huge sports stars, but they have shown they have the talent to diversify. I am positive that metal fans will embrace FREE REIGN and see them take it to the next level. These are exciting times for Riot! and we are excited to see what the future holds. When the opportunity arose to work with FREE REIGN, I jumped to it! This is something that has never been done before and this band is a long-term project. It's also been great working with John Gomez of TQ Management putting this deal to bed."
"The members of FREE REIGN and myself are equally excited to be working with John Howarth and his team at Riot! Entertainment," said FREE REIGN manager John Gomez. "Riot! has a great track record and they work hard for their artists, we all look forward to a bright future together and are honored to call Riot! our new home."

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE Drummer Interviewed By SWIGGED!; Video Available
- Aug. 11, 2009
Jennifer Faith of Swigged! conducted an interview with drummer Michael "Moose" Thomas of Welsh metallers BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE on July 24, 2009 at the Atlanta, Georgia stop of this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Watch the two-minute chat below.
Regarding how the new BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE song — which the band has been played at some of its recent shows — compares to the group's previous material, guitarist/vocalist Matt Tuck recently told the German edition of Metal Hammer magazine, "It's kind of completely new. I don't think it's like anything on 'Poison' [2005] or 'Scream Aim Fire' [2008], is it?" Moose concurred, "It's kind of more classic, if you ask me. It's not speedy, it's not thrashy." Tuck added, "It's not thrashy or really intense metal or anything. It's just like a mid-tempo kind of really nice, hard rock song. I don't even class it as metal, really. It's got metal influences and a really cool metal riff, but the song, as a vibe, is more hard rock."
BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE recently entered a Malibu, California studio with producer Don Gilmore (LINKIN PARK, LACUNA COIL) to begin recording the band's third CD for an early 2010 release. According to Tuck, the as-yet-untitled effort will mark a slight departure from the more aggressive sounds of "Scream Aim Fire", which has sold 319,000 copies in the United States since its January 2008 release. "On the last [album], we tried to be a bit more thrashy, and that was cool, but we just wanna go back to more kind of classic sound now," he said. "We want people to [think] it's a good blend of what we've done in the past.
He continued, "It's a lot more mature-sounding. The record, as a whole, is a lot more mature-sounding, it's a lot more classic. It'll stand the test of time [more] than both the previous things we've done.
"I haven't done the vocal session yet, but it's something I'm really gonna put everything I have into. The last record was what it was 'cause I had loads of problems with my throat — I had an operation and all that shit. So that's why it kind of sounds a bit weird compared to the first one — 'cause I wasn't doing good. But this time, the voice is back, it's firing, it sounds like me again, and I'm really gonna make it a great vocal rock/metal album."

As you can tell by the [new album's] title, IT'S HEAVY! The band is resorting to the root of what made TROUBLE in the first place and what they are best at, DOOM! This will no doubt be the heaviest TROUBLE release since the mid-'80s when they crushed the masses with what is now known as 'Psalm 9' and 'The Skull'."

THE GATES OF SLUMBER: New Song Available For Streaming
- Aug. 11, 2009
"The Bringer of War", a brand new song from heralded Indianapolis, Indiana doom metal masters THE GATES OF SLUMBER, is available for streaming at DecibelMagazine.com. The track comes off the band's new album, "Hymns of Blood & Thunder", which is scheduled for release on September 13 via Rise Above Records.
THE GATES OF SLUMBER encapsulates the metal experience for true believers. Weaned on BLACK SABBATH, ST. VITUS, the melodic might of IRON MAIDEN and a host of classic bands from THIN LIZZY to RAINBOW to MERCYFUL FATE, THE GATES OF SLUMBER draws deep from heavy metal's most powerful blood and delivers doom metal in its purest form.
"Hymns of Blood & Thunder" drops on the heels of the brightest and busiest year in the respected power trio's history; one that saw THE GATES OF SLUMBER pack clubs during its first U.S. headlining tour and land atop many year-end media polls with "Conqueror", an album that was hailed as "a breath of fresh air within the doom / true metal underground." The record placed at the #5 position in Decibel's "Top 40 Albums of 2008" and made Village Voice Media's "Top 10 Metal Albums of 2008", joining an impressive list of some of the genre's finest including AC/DC, JUDAS PRIEST and METALLICA.
Recorded in Chicago's Semaphore Studios with producer Sanford Parker (NACHTMYSTIUM, PELICAN), "Hymns of Blood & Thunder" is described in a press release as "a mighty document of both powerful songwriting and instrumental skull-crushing. . . the album is heavy and chillingly bleak; in an almost unrelenting way that hasn't been heard since JUDAS PRIEST's heyday ('Sad Wings of Destiny', 'Sin After Sin', etc.). Displaying a powerful focus and direction and demonstrating a very compelling emotional range, THE GATES OF SLUMBER have upped its levels of both technique and melody, resulting in an album that is at once frighteningly dark in its effect, tight in its grooves and unrivaled in its sheer power."
"Just prior to the band's 2008 U.S. headlining tour, I started working on songs for the new record with the goal in mind that it had to be a step forward for us compositionally as well as production wise," THE GATES OF SLUMBER frontman/guitarist Karl Simon remarks. "I knew that I personally wanted to work on more integrated and composed solos to allow for different sides of me to come out — sides that are more influenced by JUDAS PRIEST and the SCORPIONS, rather than the flurries of hammer-ons that I owe to Tony Iommi and Wino. The songs are more aggressive, more riff-y this time, but they also retain the musical elements that we've explored over the last couple of records. Lyrically it's a continuation of our obsession with war, and death and the fantasy worlds where those things are all so common and cool."
He continues, "I started working on 'Hymns of Blood & Thunder' almost immediately after the 'Conqueror' sessions. From the first moment I began work on the music for this record, I knew that it was going to surpass everything on 'Conqueror'; and it has. Each of the songs travels through its own movement. In place of 'the epic song' or 'the fast song,' each of these tracks takes its turn being that: 'Chaos Calling' is fast, but in the bridging mid-section you will be surprised by the feel change. 'Beneath the Eye of Mars' is a grinding death march, until we invoke the deep influence of classic '70s metal in the song's 'pause before the final fall.' The album has its lush surprises as well. We've grown, and being true to that are not forgetting all that we have learned."
"Hymns of Blood & Thunder" track listing:
01. Chaos Calling 02. Death Dealer 03. Beneath the Eyes of Mars 04. The Doom of Aceldama 05. Age of Sorrow 06. The Bringer of War 07. Descent Into Madness 08. Iron Hammer 09. The Mist in the Mourning 10. Blood and Thunder

Funniest Comments Overheard At THEM CROOKED VULTURES Concert
- Aug. 11, 2009
THEM CROOKED VULTURES, the new supergroup consisting of FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE singer/guitarist Josh Homme and LED ZEPPELIN bassist John Paul Jones, made its live debut late Sunday night (August 9) at the Metro club in Chicago, shortly after Lollapalooza closed its third and final day at nearby Grant Park. QUEENS multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes provided extra support on guitar.
Songtitles included opener "Elephants", "Scumbag Blues", "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)", "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes".
SPINearth.tv has posted new feature highlighting some of the funniest quotes overheard at the show. Check it out at this location.
Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot wrote: "The group made it very clear that it's not only for real, but also has the chance to be the exception to the super-group rule. Most of these Frankenstein projects usually end up being less than the sum of their parts, but CROOKED VULTURES sounded like it was on to something fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty."
Homme, who leads the QUEENS, sometimes plays in the EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, and works on numerous other projects, told The Pulse of Radio a while back he enjoys working as much as possible. "A workaholic's work is never done," he said. "There's so many opportunities to be involved with some really great music, and play a different role in each of the things that I'm in, and I really enjoy that. The alternative would be not to do it, and I wouldn't enjoy that. I'd rather be really tired and have played in as much quality music as I can."
THEM CROOKED VULTURES, which has been in the works for four years, will release an album and hit the road sometime later this year, but official details have yet to be announced. So far all the band has done is put up a web site as well as Twitter, Facebook and MySpace pages.

WINDS OF PLAGUE Films 'Approach The Podium' Video
- Aug. 11, 2009
Los Angeles metallers WINDS OF PLAGUE album recently shot a video for the song "Approach The Podium" with up-and-coming director Nic Izzy of Reconstructed Media (DESPISED ICON, PROTEST THE HERO).
Commented vocalist Johnny Plague: "On our one day off in between the 'Summer Slaughter' tour and the 'Decimation Of The Nation' tour, we took a 500-mile detour back up to Toronto, Canada for a grueling 14 hours of filming for our new music video. For this video effort, we decided to choose the song 'Approach The Podium'. We chose this song because we feel it best represents the band; it has all the elements that we use to create our songs. The concept of the song is betrayal by someone you hold close when you need them most. The setting used to depict this story is a great commander leading his die hard soldiers into battle. During combat, a traitor among the soldiers commits treason killing the heroic leader and leaving their people without guidance. This is only one chapter in the story of 'The Great Stone War', but I am glad we were able to bring a section of the story to life with this video."
WINDS OF PLAGUE's new album, "The Great Stone War", is being released today (August 11) in the U.S. and August 24 in Europe via Century Media Records.
"The Great Stone War" is available in a number of special editions, which are all detailed below.
* The standard CD edition * Hot Topic edition that features an exclusive bonus DVD featuring the making-of-the-album and tour footage taken from this year's Atticus metal tour. * iTunes digital download album with the exclusive bonus track "Halloween" originally done by the MISFITS.
The sextet kicked off a massive worldwide touring campaign for "The Great Stone War" in early June by taking part in the Summer Slaughter touring package, also featuring SUFFOCATION, NECROPHAGIST and DYING FETUS, among a slew of others. They followed this up with a lengthy North American run with HATEBREED and CHIMAIRA.
HardTimes.ca has uploaded video footage (see below) of WINDS OF PLAGUE's July 16, 2009 performance in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Former FAITH NO MORE Singer Says Firing JIM MARTIN Was 'A Big Mistake'
- Aug. 11, 2009
Ex-FAITH NO MORE singer Chuck Mosley has told Greg Prato of RollingStone.com that he almost shared the stage once more with his former band. "They actually invited me to come out [to Europe] and sing a duet with Mike Patton," he said. "But unfortunately, my passport expired and I couldn’t get it in time."
When asked if he would ever reunite with FAITH NO MORE on a more permanent basis, Mosley said, "Oh, totally! Especially with [guitarist] Jim Martin, because personally, I thought [firing Martin] was as big if not bigger a mistake than getting rid of me — just because he had a lot of pull with the big part of their crowd at the time. And he was 'the personality,' y'know? There was something people could identify to. After Jim, they were going through a string of different guitar players, and I couldn't name one of them. That Jagger/Richards, Plant/Page thing was gone."

According to the members of FACELIFT, Starr "was in great shape and form. [His] performance was flawless and this just about squashes all rumors of his prior poor health condition. The crowd response was amazing as crowd-surfing and high-decibel applause was present."
Back in April 2005, Seattle's KIROTV.com reported that Mike Starr was arrested in Seattle for vandalizing a car.
A man named Phillip told KIROTV.com that he spotted a man pulling the hood ornament off his vehicle.
He said he recognized the man as Michael Christopher Starr and called police. Starr was arrested for "investigation of property destruction and theft."
Starr, 43, a founding member of ALICE IN CHAINS, had been in legal trouble before in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. His past charges include DUI, reckless driving, and various drug charges.
Back in April 1994, Starr was sentenced to 30 days in the Houston jail for misdemeanor drug possession. Starr was arrested at Houston's Intercontinental Airport while trying to check in for a flight to Los Angeles with a suitcase he had stolen from the baggage claim area. Authorities searched him and found he was carrying marijuana.
