LIFE OF AGONY: Pro-Shot Footage From Germany's AREA 4 Festival Posted Online
- Sep. 1, 2009
Professionally filmed video footage of LIFE OF AGONY's performance at the Area 4 festival, which was held August 21-23, 2009 in Lüdinghausen, Germany, can be viewed below.
LIFE OF AGONY has played sporadic shows over the course of the last four years after completing its successful touring cycle for the 2005 Epic Records release, "Broken Valley". The band is currently without a record deal, having parted ways with Epic four years ago.
LIFE OF AGONY frontman Keith Caputo's latest solo album "A Fondness For Hometown Scars", was released in Europe in April 2008 via Suburban Records. The CD was produced by Martyn Lenoble (JANE'S ADDICTION, DAVE GAHAN, PORNO FOR PYROS, THE CULT); mixed by Vincent Jones (SARAH MCLACHLAN, DAVID GAHAN, MORRISSEY) and Martyn Lenoble; and was mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound in New York City.
SPOILER NYC, the New York-based punk trio featuring LIFE OF AGONY's Alan Robert on lead vocals and bass, recently uploaded two new songs — "Damaged Goods" and "Banned in 38 States" — to the band's MySpace page. The tracks come off the group's forthcoming album, "Banned in 38 States", which was recorded and mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Ken Lewis (LENNY KRAVITZ, BEASTIE BOYS) for a 2010 release through an as-yet-undisclosed label.

AS I LAY DYING: In Writing Mode
- Sep. 1, 2009
San Diego metallers AS I LAY DYING have issued the following update:
"A lot of people have been wondering what we're up to since we normally tour constantly and we haven't been playing many shows lately. Well, we've been home hard at work writing new songs for an album that will be out in early 2010. We'll start to record before the end of the year though."
AS I LAY DYING's first-ever DVD, "This Is Who We Are", sold 4,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Top Music Videos chart. It also debuted at No. 3 in Canada, where the DVD has already shipped platinum.
AS I LAY DYING has appeared on Taste Of Chaos, Ozzfest, headlined the 2006 Sounds Of The Underground Tour, Cornerstone, Bamboozle 2006 and just about every significant hard music festival around the globe. With "This Is Who We Are", AS I LAY DYING steps into new territory by releasing its first-ever DVD consisting of three discs produced and directed by Denise Korycki (CANNIBAL CORPSE's "Centuries of Torment" DVD) that provide viewers with live performances and a complete AS I LAY DYING audio/visual history.
"It's hard to believe that we've been a band for as long as we have yet have never released an official DVD documenting our first seven years," said vocalist Tim Lambesis. "As a result, we've included so much content that you hardly have to like our music to be entertained. With that said, it feels good knowing how many diehard fans over the years have supported our band and their simple enjoyment of our music has given us the chance to see the world!"

ZAKK WYLDE Checks In With Health Update
- Sep. 1, 2009
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY last week dropped off the remaining dates on the "Pedal To The Metal Tour" due to frontman Zakk Wylde's health problems.
In a September 1 posting on his Twitter page, Wylde offers the following update on his condition: "I spent three days in a hospital in Eugene, Oregon where they gave me a 24-hour drip of Heparin [an anticoagulant which is used to decrease the clotting ability of the blood and help prevent harmful clots from forming in the blood vessels — Ed.] where they could monitor me. The next two days I received shots of Heparin into my stomach. Each shot lasted 24 hours. I was given a CT scan where they found three clots. I was then told each one of the clots passed through my heart.
"I just received an ultrasound. My left leg has a clot above the side and behind my knee, my calf and running into my heel. My right leg has a clot in between my calf and ankle.
"In a couple of days, I'll have another CT scan to see how my lungs are doing.
"On the brighter side of BLACK LABEL, they shaved off four inches from my love cannon, so Barbaranne [Zakk's wife] won't be in such excruciating pain as I hammer and plough my love into her Thor-style! Aside of that, all is peachy keen!"
Wylde stated in a recent Twitter message that he is unable to sing at the moment "because pushing can cause an embolism."
An embolism occurs when an object migrates from one part of the body (through circulation) and causes a blockage (occlusion) of a blood vessel in another part of the body.
The "Pedal To The Metal Tour" will continue without BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, and the rest of the bands — MUDVAYNE, STATIC-X, SUICIDE SILENCE and BURY YOUR DEAD — will carry on with the trek as scheduled.
Further updates on Zakk's medical condition will become available as they are known.

EXODUS Cancels Beijing Show
- Sep. 1, 2009
San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS have issued the following update:
"Due to visa issue with China, we are forced to cancel our Beijing show [on September 25 at Mao Live House]. We want to thank the Chinese fans as well as Painkiller magazine/Icon Promotions for their support and understanding. We will do our best to make another show in China in the near future."
EXODUS will perform its classic debut album, "Bonded By Blood", in its entirety each night of the Thrash Domination 2009 tour of Japan in September. Also appearing on the bill are KREATOR, TESTAMENT and HEATHEN.
The German edition of Metal Hammer magazine conducted an interview with EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt at this year's installment of the Graspop Metal Meeting, which was held on June 26-28, 2009 on the festival grounds of the Boeretang in Dessel, Belgium.
When asked about EXODUS' plans for a new studio album, Holt said, "Hopefully we're hitting the studio around November 1 with Mr. Sneap [British producer Andy Sneap; MEGADETH, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY]. It's gonna be sick. We have four [songs] recorded [and left over] from the last session [for 2007's 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A'], and I've got, like, nine [other tracks] I'm working on, and Lee [Altus, guitar] has a bunch of stuff. But this next album is gonna blow people's minds."
Regarding the upcoming CD's musical direction, Holt said, "There's a couple of twists on this. I try not to repeat every album. I mean, we did 'Tempo Of The Damned' [2004], [which was] a little more old-school, and we did 'Shovel Headed Kill Machine' [2005], which was really brutal and fast, and then 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A' [2007], [which] was, like, longer and more epic songs. So this album's gonna have some different stuff to it. Maybe a little more dual-guitar stuff, 'cause I've been playing with Lee for quite awhile now — a little more dual-guitar harmony shred stuff. "
Watch Metal Hammer's interview with Gary Holt at this location.
A two-minute trailer for "Assorted Atrocities", the forthcoming EXODUS three-disc DVD/CD set, can be viewed below. Due later this year, the package will contain the band's July 2008 performance at Germany's Wacken Open Air festival, plus a 105-minute documentary following the band through the last five years of touring as well as about 45 minutes of bonus footage, with photo galleries and all of the group's promotional videos. The set will consist of two DVDs plus an audio CD of the Wacken performance.

MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE: 'I Am No Longer The Easiest Boy To Hate In Heavy Metal'
- Sep. 1, 2009
Peter Hodgson of I Heart Guitar recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
I Heart Guitar: "Endgame" is really energetic and angry. Where did that come from?
Mustaine: I don't really know what spurred this on other than just being in a good place right now. I'm happy. I still have some of the things that have wounded me — the scars are never going to go away, but it's just the way I'm dealing with things now. And I think that's probably the key to everything. If I look at my circumstances, it's like looking at scores from yesterday's football matches. In the beginning, even though it's zero to zero, at some point that time's already designated and it's already been exposed, expired, lapsed and it happened. And for me, I've just got to accept those things and just do the absolute very best I can to work up to those moments. My career right now is better than it's ever been. I've got a brand new contract I just signed with Clear Channel radio over here for three years, my book's coming out next year, my record's coming out next month. I believe I've written the best record of my career and I love the way that the fans are reacting to it. And even more importantly than anyone's reaction to it, it just seems like people have forgiven me for whatever it was they were mad at me about, and my heart is just so, just leaping with gladness. Because I am no longer the easiest boy to hate in heavy metal.
I Heart Guitar: It seems like with "United Abominations" you were really confident going in, but with this one it seemed like you weren't really giving anything away until it was finished.
Mustaine: I think probably one of the reasons why the timing was different with that was, with the last record there were so many times where we would post about stuff and people would get excited, but I wasn't really finding myself being able to experience the record as much as I wanted to, and the reason for that was I was too caught up in what people were thinking. And I don't make music to react to people's thinking, I write music 'cause I like music. And I don't know why, but God made me good at this. Why me? I don't know! I certainly haven't done anything that stands out to reason why I would be blessed with this talent. I just know I want to try my best to use it, and I want to have fun while I'm doing it. Man, I love watching people have fun while I'm out there doing my job.
I Heart Guitar: How did having your own studio impact the sessions?
Mustaine: I think having the studio was beneficial for us because it gave us the license to be able to come and go at our leisure. If we wanted to start early we could, and if we wanted to start late we could. I think that's something that really makes the band feel respected as individuals. It's those little things that make all the difference in the world. I've been around the block a few times so those things are second nature to me, but it's not to Chris [Broderick, guitar] or to Shawn [Drover, drums] because even though they're relatively new, they've had their experiences with doing things at the proper level, and I would like, myself, I would love to get MEGADETH back to the proper level.
I Heart Guitar: Here's a question from the MEGADETH forum: Are you planning anything to mark the 20th anniversary of "Rust In Peace"?
Mustaine: Well if they're asking about me playing with those guys again I think I've made it pretty clear.
I Heart Guitar: Well even something like a special commemorative release, or playing the album start-to-finish live.
Mustaine: Yeah, I've heard that, but my answer is pretty simple: If it was gonna happen, it would have. I don't think it'll ever happen. I don't dislike any of those guys. We did have some very difficult periods together but I was just as difficult to be around as they were. And all I want to do right now is just bless them and just let them know I'm a fan of theirs. Even the ones I had a hard time with, I'm a fan of theirs. They were part of my life and I look to those times together with great fondness.
I Heart Guitar: Also with an album as strong as "Endgame", I dunno why you'd wanna look back 20 years?
Mustaine: Yeah, why? People are saying, "Can you get together and do a reunion thing?" and it's like, "Yeah, but you have to suck both my eyes out first." No disrespect to those guys, but it's like that old saying when you marry your girlfriend, "Why buy the cow when the milk is free?" I'm sure there's something nasty like that. But I love where we're at right now and I wouldn't change anything for anything. There's no reason to make any changes to anything. Period.
Germany's Plattenladenwoche web site recently spoke to Mustaine about his record collection and love of vinyl. Watch the five-minute chat below.

MAYHEM, FINNTROLL, TAAKE Confirmed For Norway's INFERNO Festival
- Sep. 1, 2009
MAYHEM, FINNTROLL and TAAKE are the first confirmed bands for next year's installment of the Inferno festival, set to take place March 31 - April 3, 2010 in Oslo, Norway.
Few Norwegian music festivals can equal the international status that the Inferno festival now holds. The festival, voted as one of the 10 best in the world by the readers of Terrorizer magazine, continues to grow and is considered the Norwegian metal community's most important gathering.
For four days during Easter, people fly in from England, Sweden, Germany, Italy, the USA and even India to experience extreme metal in Norway's capital.
The festival was started in 2001 by BORKNAGAR guitarist Jens Ryland who wanted the Norwegian metal community to come together for a celebration of extreme music.
Selveste Trond VonWiggo and Charlotte Blowie Christiansen of Norway's Radio Tango 105,8 have uploaded a six-minute YouTube clip (see below) containing photos from this year's Inferno festival, which was held April 8-11, 2009 in Oslo, Norway.

Sweden's DISCONNECTED Changes Name To SINNERS PARADISE
- Sep. 1, 2009
DISCONNECTED, the Swedish metal act formerly known as HER WHISPER, has run into legal problems due to its recent name change and has decided to switch its moniker once again. Now known as SINNERS PARADISE, the band's debut album, entitled "The Awakening", is expected to emerge sometime in late 2009. Mike Wead (KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE) will once again appear as a guest musician on the CD, which will be mixed and mastered by Fredrik Groth (ex-THE STORYTELLER, KRYPTILLUSION).
HER WHISPER's final album, entitled "The Great Unifier", was released in February 2008 via STF Records.
Japanese extreme metal band SIGH has completed work on its eighth studio album, "Scenes From Hell", for an early 2010 release via The End Records.
SIGH's Mirai Kawashima has posted the final in-studio blog for MetalSucks, which over the past several months has documented the recording process for "Scenes From Hell". An excerpt follows below.
"The album has finally been mixed and mastered. We were supposed to finish mixing it by the end of June, but it was not easy at all. Of course I knew it'd be tough to mix all those orchestral instruments properly, but it was much harder than expected. The brass section sounds very powerful by itself. Guitar, bass and drums sound powerful enough by themselves. However, once all are mixed, they could often kill each other's powerfulness! After having gone through numerous trials and errors, we finally succeeded in getting the proper result. And the album has been mastered by Maor Appelbaum, who also mastered our tribute to VENOM. He has worked with such artists as Yngwie Malmsteen and Rob Halford, so he knows how to master the metal stuff! 'Scenes from Hell' definitely sounds powerful, symphonic and relentless. This is the musical description of hell!"
"Scenes From Hell" final track listing:
01. Prelude to the Oracle 02. L'art de Mourir 03. The Soul Grave Musica in Tempora Belli 04. The Red Funeral 05. The Summer Funeral 06. Musica in Tempora Belli 07. Vanitas 08. Scenes from Hell
The cover artwork for the album was created by Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, AGHORA, TO-MERA, GWAR, SICKENING HORROR) and will be revealed soon.
Video footage of SIGH performing a cover version of the VENOM classic "Black Metal" at last year's Damnation Festival, which was held November 22, 2008 in Leeds, U.K., can be viewed below.

Study: METALLICA's Music Calms Monkeys
- Sep. 1, 2009
Ian Sample, the science correspondent for Guardian.co.uk, reports that METALLICA's music had the unexpected effect of calming monkeys when it was played to them as part of a recent study.
In the study, which was published today in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, 14 cotton-top tamarins were played 30-second blasts of music while the researchers noted any changes in their behavior. The animals were played SAMUEL BARBER's "Adagio for Strings" and a soft piano piece from "The Fragile" by rock band NINE INCH NAILS, followed by METALLICA's "Of Wolf and Man" and an excerpt from "The Grudge" by rock band TOOL.
They then heard the specially composed monkey music.
The only human music that elicited any response was METALLICA, the study found.

"Fire", a new song from LINKIN PARK singer Chester Bennington's side project, DEAD BY SUNRISE, is available for streaming at this location. The track comes off DEAD BY SUNRISE's debut album, "Out Of Ashes", which is scheduled for release on October 13.
The track listing for the CD is as follows:
01. Fire 02. Crawl Back In 03. Too Late 04. Inside Of Me 05. Let Down 06. Give Me Your Name 07. My Suffering 08. Condemned 09. Into You 10. End Of The World 11. Walking In Circles 12. In The Darkness
DEAD BY SUNRISE recently finished filming videos for the songs "Crawl Back In" and "Let Down". with director P.R. Brown (SLIPKNOT, MÖTLEY CRÜE, KORN, GODSMACK, AVENGED SEVENFOLD).
Bennington began working on DEAD BY SUNRISE back in 2006, explaining, "I came up with a few songs that felt and sounded really good, but I knew they weren't right stylistically for LINKIN PARK. They were darker and moodier than anything I'd come up with for the band. So I decided to work on them on my own rather than turn them over and have them transformed into LINKIN PARK tracks."
The band, which is Bennington on vocals, guitarists Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh (from ORGY/JULIEN-K), bassist Brandon Belsky, drummer Elias Anda (also from JULIEN-K), and keyboardist Anthony Valcic, recorded "Out Of Ashes" in Los Angeles with producer Howard Benson (MOTÖRHEAD, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE).

Back home from a whirlwind trip across the country in support of their Ibex Moon Records debut, "Within One", Los Angeles' DREAMING DEAD have taken some of the summer's biggest highlights and most hilarious moments and condensed them down into an action-packed video tour blog. The clip, which can be viewed below, features onstage action and behind-the-scenes antics from DREAMING DEAD, as well as tourmates MONSTROSITY, MASTER and GOREAPHOBIA.
Guitarist/vocalist Elizabeth Elliot comments: "And we're back! We've actually been back home for the last month getting our lives back together and didn't want to go without giving you all a proper recap of the 'Dreaming Dead Summer U.S. Tour '09', along with sharing some video footage of this road adventure that began in Stuart Florida, ran through Philadelphia, Rochester and Syracuse NY, back down through Texas and ended a week early for us in Las Vegas, where our van finally decided to break down. Nonetheless, we had an awesome time and returned home very happy.
"We'd like to thank everyone involved in putting this tour together for all their efforts; MONSTROSITY and TORN THE FUCK APART with whom we partied and brutalized the East Coast; the legendary men of MASTER and GOREAPHOBIA that showed us what true metal is about; and, of course, all the folks that came out to bang their and support the metal scene."
DREAMING DEAD has been confirmed as the opening act on the upcoming "Those Whom the Gods Detest Tour" with NILE, IMMOLATION, KRISIUN and ABIGAIL WILLIAMS. The trek will kick off on January 15 in Baltimore, Maryland.

SLAYER's KING Says DAVE MUSTAINE Is 'Pompous', 'A Hypocrite' And 'A Great Guitar Player'
- Sep. 1, 2009
SLAYER members Kerry King (guitar) and Dave Lombardo (drums) took part in a press conference with members of the French media on August 31, 2009 in Paris, France. Watch the question-and-answer session in three parts below (courtesy of MetalSickness.com).
When asked about his long-running "feud" with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine and SLAYER's recent Canadian tour with MEGADETH, King stated, "We only did four [shows with MEGADETH so far on the current touring cycle]. I think it's cool for the fans [to have SLAYER and MEGADETH touring together], you know. Everybody's all worried about the beef with me and Dave; we don't really get along. But I don't really have anything against him. I think he's a great guitar player. When we had that Canada thing pop up, I just said, 'I'm gonna go, and if I see Dave, I'll be cordial. I'll say, 'Hey, Dave. What's up?!' But if he's a dick to me, I'm gonna be a bigger dick to him.' And that's how [the upcoming SLAYER/MEGADETH tour of] Australia is gonna be, and that's how the next Canadian tour [with MEGADETH] is gonna be. I think maybe he's grown up a bit because I think he's a little pompous and I think he's a big hypocrite — that's my problem with him, personally — but I could never take anything away from his guitar playing; I think he's great."
According to Eil.com, the world's leading provider of rare music and music memorabilia, SLAYER's new album, "World Painted Blood", will be released in Japan on October 14. The limited-edition two-disc set will include the 11-track CD album, plus a bonus Region 2 NTSC DVD (content to be announced), picture sleeve and Obi strip.
An Obi strip is a loop of folded paper usually found around the left side or bottom of a Japanese or Taiwanese LP record, music CD, video game, or book. It features the title and other information, such as price and catalog numbers. The name comes from the sashes worn with kimonos and martial arts uniforms.
Former Metal Edge editor-in-chief Phil Freeman has written the first track-by-track review of "World Painted Blood" for MSN Music's Heavy Metal Superfan site. After describing each of the album's 11 tracks in detail, he concludes: "A lot of people say SLAYER hasn't really been great since 'Seasons in the Abyss'. Those people are wrong. The Paul Bostaph years had a lot to recommend them ('Diabolus in Musica' is a seriously underrated album), and 'Christ Illusion' showed that SLAYER could experiment with dissonance and melody, and kick their own playing and songwriting up a notch when they wanted to. The bandmembers have given a lot of interviews talking about how a lot of this album was written in the studio. Listening to it, you can't tell. That's really impressive. Much the way METALLICA's 'Death Magnetic' combined the thrash of their early years with the hard-rock grooves of their 1990s work, 'World Painted Blood' builds on the success of every SLAYER album before it. It's not a legacy-polishing effort; it's the next step in a still-ongoing journey. Highly recommended."
Tentatively due in the U.S. in early October via American Recordings/Columbia Records, "World Painted Blood" will feature the following track listing:
01. World Painted Blood 02. Unit 731 03. Snuff 04. Beauty Through Order 05. Hate Worldwide 06. Public Display Of Dismemberment 07. Human Strain 08. Americon 09. Psychopathy Red 10. Playing With Dolls 11. Not Of This God
"World Painted Blood" was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. The CD was produced by Greg Fidelman, who's spent time in the studio with METALLICA, THE GOSSIP, THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, SLIPKNOT and others, and executive-produced by longtime SLAYER colleague Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project.

ALICE IN CHAINS Guitarist: 'We've Never Done This To Please Anybody Except For Ourselves'
- Sep. 1, 2009
Sarah Rodman of The Boston Globe recently conducted an interview with ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell. The brief question-and-answer session follows below.
The Boston Globe: Was the title track [of the new ALICE IN CHAINS album, "Black Gives Way To Blue"] difficult to record?
Cantrell: That song in particular was actually a pretty easy song to write but it was a very difficult process to let that out and it really affected us to actually put that into words. But I think it was necessary.
The Boston Globe: On that song and several others there's a sense of optimism bubbling under the sort of hazy melancholy surface the band has been known for. It feels like you're counseling listeners to embrace pain as a means of healing, not just reside in the darkness of loss. Good advice.
Cantrell: Thank you. Even though we delved into some darker subject matter, I think that element was always in there. It wasn't always about doom, gloom, and drugs. But by talking about that stuff it's kind of a freeing thing because it's stuff everybody feels. Years have passed and we've gone through a change and maybe the balance of some of the elements has shifted a little bit.
The Boston Globe: Now that it's clear that you're relaunching do you worry that some fans might object to your continuing as ALICE IN CHAINS without [late singer] Layne [Staley]?
Cantrell: We've never really done this to please everybody. As a matter of fact, we've never really done this to please anybody except for ourselves. It ended up being something that spoke to people as well and over the years we've collected a group of people that support the music and we're very grateful for that. But I think it really has got to be something that you do for yourself and then hopefully that gets taken to the next step of being for somebody else.
The Boston Globe: What do you think Layne would say?
Cantrell: He's probably thinking, "What the [expletive] took you guys so long?"

MEGADETH Drummer Says He 'Hated' Seeing Brother GLEN Leave The Band
- Sep. 1, 2009
Kevin Stewart-Panko of Hellbound.ca recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH drummer Shawn Drover. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Hellbound.ca: Your brother [guitarist Glen Drover] left the band. From your perspective, in being in a band with your brother, how did that impact you?
Drover: I hated it, but once I came to the realization that it was the right thing to do for him, I supported him. Of course, I miss my brother. We've always gotten along really well and we've pretty much played in bands together our whole lives, except for little bits pieces, like when he was in KING DIAMOND for three years. Initially, I did everything I could do to talk him out of it. Then, I realized it was the right thing to do. He gracefully stepped down and did it at the right time. We had an 11-week break before we started up a tour which was beginning in Europe. He had a choice: he either had to stick out the rest of the world tour and then say he couldn't do it or he had to stop at that point. We talked about it and he said he just couldn't keep doing it. He couldn't give 100% and I understood that and respected it. Having said that, when all that went down, we had to find a guitar player. Ultimately, me and Glen were the ones who picked Chris [Broderick]. We had a really short list of people we knew who could, first of all, cut the gig music-wise and secondly, who were the least problematic. There are all these stupid things that come along with players sometimes, like the person has a big ego or likes to snort ants or something. You want to have someone who's the least problematic and Chris was that guy and within 24 hours of Glen leaving, Chris was all but in the band. He went down and talked to Dave [Mustaine] and it was a very quick turnaround. But it happened because of me and Glen and Glen actually recommending Chris. It worked out good, but it was definitely difficult.
Hellbound.ca: Is that sort of family decision one you've ever had to take into consideration at any point over the years?
Drover: No, because my situation is different. The only reason Glen chose to do that was because he had a very young boy. When he joined MEGADETH, his son was only two and over the course of two-and-a-half or three years, he really started to miss being with his son and it really started to eat him up. It was really difficult, just realizing that he only had one kid — the only kid he will have — and he only gets one chance to see his kid grow up and he was having a hard time with that. My kids are grown so my situation is completely different.
Hellbound.ca: So, the new album was recorded at the new Vic's Garage complex/studio?
Drover: Yeah, we had Vic's Garage built in southern California, just north of San Diego which is where [bassist] James [Lomenzo] and Dave live. Chris lives closer to L.A. I'm the only guy who lives out of state. But yeah, we had the studio constructed specifically for that purpose, to record "Endgame", and for future recordings as well. We also have a huge warehouse and rehearsal space; it's kind of a multi-use place and it was really a smart move on Dave's part because every time you go to rehearse for a tour in L.A., you have to go to a rehearsal building and it costs you an arm-and-a-leg and it's kind of a pain in the butt because you're at the mercy of the people who own the building as to when you can play and whether it's even available. It's the same with the studio where you're on the clock. This is just a different situation and made for a more relaxed atmosphere for the recording of the record and it's our place. I'm really glad he did it, it turned out to be a really cool thing and obviously we're going to use it in the future because it's our studio.
Hellbound.ca: How do things work out logistically when you guys want to get together for writing sessions or rehearsals?
Drover: I'm a plane ride away. I'm four hours away. So, if anything, it's just coordinating it through management and all that stuff and there you go. It's quite easy. Lots of bands nowadays don't all live in the exact same place and they make it work. It's a helluva lot easier than in 2004 when Dave was the only guy who lived in California. Glen was in Toronto, I was here in Atlanta and ex-bassist] James [MacDonough] lived down in Florida. It's certainly a lot easier having three guys in the band who live in the same area.
Hellbound.ca: Thus far, the reaction, on-line chatter and even some of the comments Chris has made in interviews have mentioned the new record having more of an old-school feel or vibe. I was wondering what your take was on the direction the new record has taken?
Drover: Y'know what dude? It's just a bunch of metal songs. If people think all that stuff, in a good way, and that makes them happy, then that's great and I'm all for it. We didn't go in there saying, "Okay, we gotta make this song sound like something off 'Peace Sells'" and all that kinda stuff. If it turns out that way and it gives people the thought that it's reminiscent of this or that record, then that's great. But we didn't go in there with that intention. We just wanted to go in there and make the best record that we can and hope that the consensus is positive. Those who've heard this record so far, most of the reaction has been very positive and I'm thankful for that, but we didn't have a specific formula.
30-second audio samples of all the tracks that will appear on MEGADETH's new album, "Endgame", are available for streaming on Amazon.de (scroll down).

MACHINE HEAD Explains Lack Of North American Headlining Tour In Support Of 'The Blackening'
- Sep. 1, 2009
Some of MACHINE HEAD's U.S.-based fans have been wondering why the San Francisco Bay Area metal band has not yet announced a U.S. headlining tour in support of "The Blackening" — despite the fact that the album is now two and a half years old.
In a posting on MACHINE HEAD's official message board, the band's guitarist Phil Demmel addressed the fans' concerns, blaming the lack of a headlining U.S. trek squarely on a timing issue.
He writes: "'Blackening' Europe U.K. shows: 117; 'Blackening' U.S./Canada shows: 155.
"I was wondering which support slot we should've turned down to go out and headline? LAMB OF GOD? HEAVEN & HELL? HELLYEAH? The [Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem fest? METALLICA? SLAYER/MEGADETH?
"Any suggestions?
"We tried putting something together [around the time of the HELLYEAH tour] but could find NO bands to take out. [The HELLYEAH tour] was amazing for us in reaching new markets and fans and set us up for returning and headlining.
"Timing is a huge factor in picking tours. I feel bad for the U.S. but everything we're doing is setting up what comes next. We ONLY headlined up until this record and when it came out the biggest names in metal wanted us out with them. FINALLY. If we don't take support slots we're confining ourselves to playing the SAME clubs and theatres forever.
"Yeah, the setlist was pretty similar for a lot of the runs in the U.S. We had to put together songs that would be best for people who'd never seen us before. We've been better and cognizant about mixing it up this past year. That will continue.
"I understand the frustration. We haven't 'forgotten' about North America. We've just been made offers that we (or ANY metal band) couldn't/wouldn't refuse. Europe/U.K. is simply more crazy for this band. In a sense, the U.S. has been the priority, raising our profile and reaching new fans via support slots was the vehicle to do this.
"We've been killing ourselves (almost literally) out on the road just so we can still be a band. Things are done for a reason. We've always been one of the most fan-friendliest metal bands out there and always will be."
Since the release of "The Blackening" in March of 2007, MACHINE HEAD has toured incessantly, playing more than 300 shows in support of the Grammy-nominated album. And while this three-year-long album cycle has seen MACHINE HEAD share U.S. and European stages as main support to METALLICA, SLIPKNOT, SLAYER, MARILYN MANSON and MEGADETH, headline the Jägermeister stage on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, and headline the legendary Wacken Open Air festival to over 85,000 people, it hasn't seen them on a full-fledged headline tour, playing full-length sets. Until now.
Starting January 23, 2010, "The Black Procession" will tear through Europe, alongside brethren in heaviness HATEBREED, BLEEDING THROUGH, and ALL SHALL PERISH, for what promises to be night-after-night of unbridled power! MACHINE HEAD singer/guitarist Robb Flynn says, "After three years of touring we are beyond stoked to finish this tour cycle on our own terms, with our show, our stage, our production, our control, and we're lucky enough to bring three of our favorite bands along with us, it's going to be fucking massive!!!" MACHINE HEAD have also decided to do things a little differently for the fans this time around and will be playing two or more intimate shows in 3,000-4,000-seat venues instead of the massive arena shows fans have grown accustomed to. Bassist Adam Duce adds, "Having done arenas now since 'The Black Crusade' as well as the METALLICA and SLIPKNOT tours, we thought it would be killer to give the fans a chance to have a couple different setlists, and mix things up a bit. It's gonna be fun for us to see which gems we dig up!!!"
"The Black Procession" will mark the end of the touring cycle for "The Blackening", making it the ABSOLUTE last chance you'll have to catch MACHINE HEAD live before they hunker down to write their next album! So grab your tickets early, because you KNOW you don't want to miss this show!
Professionally filmed video footage of MACHINE HEAD performing the song "Halo" on August 2 at the Sonisphere festival at the legendary Knebworth Park, United Kingdom can be viewed below.

A STORM OF LIGHT To Release 'Forgive Us Our Trespasses' Via NEUROT RECORDINGS
- Sep. 1, 2009
Brooklyn, New York's own A STORM OF LIGHT will unleash their new full-length, "Forgive Us Our Trespasses", on September 22 via Neurot Recordings. The follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed debut, "And We Wept The Black Ocean Within", finds its power through a dense bringing together of melodies, moods and textures, ensuring that while things are as heavy and cataclysmic as fans would expect, the devastating effects rely on interwoven melodies and graceful shifts in timbre, instead of a stream of identikit riffs.
A STORM OF LIGHT features guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Josh Graham (NEUROSIS visuals, BLOOD AND TIME, BATTLE OF MICE), bassist/vocalist Domenic Seita (formerly of TOMBS and ASEA), drummer/percussionist Andy Rice (formerly of SINKING SHIPS) and guitarist/keyboardist Joel Hamilton (BOOK OF KNOTS, BATTLE OF MICE), who also recorded the album. "Forgive Us Our Trespasses" showcases a more refined sound and a significant broadening of scope, the band leading the listener on a millennial journey that sees the modest curls of smoke rising from nomadic campsites gradually replaced by the billowing smokestacks of industry before being cast down and consigned to the soil once more as the planet rouses from its aeon-long slumber. The record spotlights a host of carefully-chosen collaborators, including vocalist Nerissa Campbell (PRIMITIVE NORTH), the unique talents of Jarboe (SWANS, WORLD OF SKIN, J2), the otherworldly spoken word segues of singer, poet and author Lydia Lunch and the mournful strings of Carla Kihlstedt (BOOK OF KNOTS, SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM, 2 FOOT YARD) and Marika Hughes (2 FOOT YARD). Check out the song "Midnight" from "Forgive Us Our Trespasses" streaming at the band's official web site.
Stay tuned for details on the upcoming CD release party to be held in New York City this October.
A STORM OF LIGHT will return to Europe for a co-headlining tour with Relapse recording artists MINSK in October/November.
On Friday, September 4, death metal legends INCANTATION will be in West Allis, Wisconsin for an in-store appearance at FireWalk Music. Fans in the area should not miss this opportunity to meet with one the premier names in American death metal. The signing will last from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Please visit www.firewalkmusicgroup.com for more details.
INCANTATION's seventh album, "Primordial Domination", was released in 2006 on Ibex Moon Records.

Commented guitarist/vocalist Rob Urbinati: "Our recording process was real, so we didn't feel comfortable going too far into the digital realm for the cover. Our old friend, Kurt Bachman from BELIEVER, got us in touch with Michael 'Roz' Rosner, who does nothing but absolutely stunning work. Roz was into letting technology assist in creating art, not take over, and that is the same approach we take to music. Roz can make an image look beautiful, yet ugly; human yet inhuman; all awesome, unique imagery. The Eye Level studio team took our ideas and gave us a great cover."

FU MANCHU: More 'Signs Of Infinite Power' Details Revealed
- Sep. 1, 2009
Southern California's heavy fuzz rock legends FU MANCHU will release their eleventh full-length album, "Signs of Infinite Power", on October 20, 2009 via Century Media Records.
Recorded at Maple Studios in Santa Ana, California by the band and producer Sergio Chavez (MOTÖRHEAD, HELMET) and mixed by Andrew Alekel (FOO FIGHTERS, DANZIG), "Signs of Infinite Power" could well be dubbed "a reawakening" of FU MANCHU as the record delivers monstrous doses of the group's punk energy, hard rock drive and psychedelic crunch in spades. From the instant the album's lead track "Bionic Astronautics" soars from the speakers, it is undeniably evident that FU MANCHU is as primed and hungry as ever before. The record holds the sound of a band rocking purely for the sheer joy of rocking; amps cranked to 11 and revved to maximum overdrive.
"Signs of Infinite Power" track listing:
01. Bionic Astronautics 02. Steel.Beast.Defeated 03. Against the Ground 04. Webfoot Witch Hat 05. El Busta 06. Signs of Infinite Power 07. Eyes x 10 08. Gargantuan March 09. Take It Away 10. One Step Too Far
"We're stoked to unleash 'Signs of Infinite Power' because we feel that it's the best record that we've ever made," states FU MANCHU vocalist/guitarist Scott Hill. "We're can't believe that we're going into our twentieth year as a band. The excitement and energy levels that we're feeling right now are as high as they've ever been."
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, FU MANCHU has a number of very special events planned for 2010. The band will unveil a host of plans that include rolling out both one-of-a-kind live events and extra special vinyl releases. Additionally, the VIRULENCE (pre-FU MANCHU) recordings will be remastered and packaged with the band's "1985-87 demos" and both live songs and video footage from 1987-89 under the title "If This Isn't A Dream…1985-1989". The package will be made available on both CD and LP and is slated for a winter 2009 release via Southern Lord Records.
FU MANCHU will tour the U.S. this fall in support of "Signs of Infinite Power".
Originally formed in 1985 as a BLACK FLAG-influenced hardcore punk band called VIRULENCE, FU MANCHU has since become one of hard rock's most celebrated names. The band released its first single "Kept Between Trees" in 1990 and in the years following, helped give rise to a celebrated style of heavy music tagged "stoner rock" alongside peers such as KYUSS, MONSTER MAGNET and SLEEP. Since its inception, the quartet has built itself a fanatical army of loyal enthusiasts all drawn to the group's ridiculously catchy, unpretentious music, guitar-driven sound and carefree lyrics centered on "old muscle cars, choppers, vans, skateboarding and science fiction."
FU MANCHU's most recent album, "We Must Obey", was released in February 2007 via Century Media/Liquor and Poker. The CD was recorded at Hollywood's Grandmaster Recorders studio (TOOL, NINE INCH NAILS, BLACK CROWES). Finishing touches were added by Gene Grimaldi at Oasis Mastering (VELVET REVOLVER, PENNYWISE, REV. HORTON HEAT).
In addition to the songs "Hung Out To Dry" and "Between The Lines" — both also available on the limited-edition "Hung Out To Dry" EP — the album includes a cover of THE CARS classic "Moving In Stereo".
FU MANCHU's video for the song "Hung out to Dry" can be viewed below. The clip was filmed in Los Angeles with director Lucas Heyne (MASTER P, TSAR, SWITCHFOOT).

- Sep. 1, 2009
Austrian female-fronted symphonic metal band EDENBRIDGE has issued the following update:
"Recordings for our seventh studio album have begun last weekend at Wild One Studios in Vienna. Max [Pointner] has hammered his drum takes on tape respectively hard disc in unbelievable one and a half days and the results are simply fantastic!
"We will continue with recordings in October. Guitars, basses, vocals and all acoustic instruments like bouzouki, mandolin, Irish fiddle and acoustic guitars will be recorded at [guitarist/keyboardist] Lanvall's Farpoint Station studio. Already finished are all keyboards, pianos and orchestrations."
The new EDENBRIDGE album is tentatively due in May/June 2010.
Regarding the new material's direction, EDENBRIDGE previously said, "Of course, we have followed the symphonic way of our last album, 'MyEarthDream' [2008]. Nevertheless, there are more atmospheric and melancholic vibes on the new one."
The band added, "We have two absolutely smashing hit songs, both perfect for a video clip."
Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Brothers On Diamir", "Skyline's End", "Bon Voyage Vagabond", "Further Afield" and "Come Undone".
EDENBRIDGE will team up with SERENITY for a tour in September.

OZZY OSBOURNE To Perform At SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FESTIVAL
- Sep. 1, 2009
Rock legend OZZY OSBOURNE will now be opening AND closing the second annual Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF), set for September 10-12. The three-day festival will kick off when Ozzy is honored at a tribute event Thursday, September 10 at the House of Blues and then Ozzy will perform the festival's final set Saturday, September 12. That's when, for the first time ever, the Sunset Strip (between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Blvd.) will be closed to host two concert stages. KORN, PEPPER, THE DONNAS and KOTTONMOUTH KINGS are among the 40 acts performing throughout the day.
Ozzy's appearance will mark his first full performance on the Sunset Strip in almost 40 years and his first ever as a solo artist. Back in 1970, BLACK SABBATH performed a five-night stand (November 11-15) at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go as part of their first U.S. tour. His career has spanned four decades and his music is as relevant today as ever. The multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide — 50 with BLACK SABBATH and as many as a solo artist — and in 2003 was honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard's "Walk of Fame."
Anticipation for Ozzy at the Sunset Strip Music Festival 2009 is already building: his immortal image is now displayed on one of the largest billboards in Los Angeles (see below). It hangs high above The Sunset Strip spanning 12-stories (6,500 square feet tall) off the east side of the famous 9000 Building directly across the street from The Roxy Theatre and Rainbow Bar & Grill. The signage will be lit at night allowing for its viewing from miles away.
On Saturday, September 12, there will be 40-plus music acts throughout the day performing on two stages set up on the street and on club stages within the street closure — Key Club, The Roxy Theatre, Cat Club and Whisky A Go-Go. Tickets are available now for a discounted price of $39.50.

IN THIS MOMENT Announces 'A Winter To Remember' Headlining Tour
- Sep. 1, 2009
Southern California's IN THIS MOMENT will embark on a massive, headlining, North American tour dubbed "A Winter To Remember" this fall. The trek, which kicks off on November 2, features a very diverse list of supporting acts, including IN FEAR AND FAITH, AGRACEFUL and MOTIONLESS IN WHITE.
Commented guitarist Chris Howorth: "We just finished nine action-packed weeks on the Vans Warped Tour and it was one of the best experiences we've had as a band. It was such an intense and rewarding experience and we are proud to have been a part of it this year. That being said, we are currently taking the next two months off to write our next album and prepare for our first-ever headlining tour.
"We are extremely excited to announce this tour! We've spent the last three years as an opening band trying to reach as many new people as we could, connecting with people and building our fan base, but now it’s finally time for us to do a tour that is just for our fans.
"We will be playing a long set comprised of songs from both our albums and are planning some really cool surprises for everyone attending. Our manager and booking agent have spent the last few months putting together a tour package that will bring something new and exciting on the road for our old and new fans alike to enjoy. We have Revolver magazine (the baddest metal/hard rock magazine on the planet) on board as our sponsor and we have assembled a package of heavy and melodic bands to bring out with us that will kick everyone's ass. IN FEAR AND FAITH, AGRACEFUL and MOTIONLESS IN WHITE are all really talented and diverse bands that we think the IN THIS MOMENT fans will enjoy.
"With the tour taking place during the fall/winter months we decided to give the whole thing a holiday feel. So bring your Christmas cheer and merry mayhem or if you wanna be a Scrooge or the Grinch, that's fine too, but come out to a show and rock with us. Let's make it 'A Winter To Remember!'"
