KORN, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, OZZY Members Remember DIMEBAG - Aug. 12, 2008
During this past weekend's one-day Ozzfest in Dallas, Chris Steffen of RollingStone.com spoke to members of KORN, SYSTEM OF A DOWN and OZZY OSBOURNE about their memories of PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was killed onstage at an Ohio concert in 2004.

Jonathan Davis (KORN): "The shit he did, that's what got me into heavy music — 'Vulgar Display of Power'. I was only into Eighties music before that. The heaviest thing I listened to was SKINNY PUPPY and MINISTRY, but that wasn't metal. When I heard 'Vulgar Display', I was like, 'Holy shit, what the fuck is this?' The first time I ever saw them live, before KORN was even signed, me and Fieldy [KORN bassist] went, and it was PANTERA and SEPULTURA at Irving Meadows in L.A. They came out, started the first song, the curtain dropped, and me and Fieldy just started crying. We looked at each other and we had tears in our eyes because it was so fucking intense and heavy and sick."

Serj Tankian: "When [SYSTEM OF A DOWN] played with PANTERA at the Forum, my parents had come to the show, and my parents are definitely not into heavy music at all. They were older, in their late sixties. What they were doing was very special, to a point where my parents, who are not into any rock or metal or any type of heavy music, really got them. I was blown away, and I said, 'Really? You're not just messing with me?' They said, 'No, we love them. You guys were great, but they are awesome.'"

Blasko (bass, OZZY OSBOURNE): "The first PANTERA song I heard probably would have been 'Cowboys From Hell', which I thought was cool, but I don't think I really got it until 'Vulgar Display of Power'. Then I said, 'Okay, now I get it, now I see what's happening.' When I first heard 'I'm Broken', I thought, 'This is the raddest song ever — the raddest riff.' It just makes me want to break shit. It was like, 'This is the song I wish I wrote.' That was the song where I was just said, 'Fuck!'"

A special one-time only all-star tribute to fallen PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist and Texas native "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was held at this year's Ozzfest.

Fan-filmed video footage of Lars Ulrich of METALLICA performing PINK FLOYD's "Wish You Were Here" alongside Jerry Cantrell (ALICE IN CHAINS), Mike Inez (ALICE IN CHAINS), Scott Ian (ANTHRAX) and Pearl Aday (Ian's fiancée and daughter of legendary crooner Meat Loaf) can be viewed below.

To the douchebag that commented That Dimebag "contributed nothing at all to metal" ............

Fuck you ! Seriously, Fuck you ! nuff said.

Secondly, The comment about his death being "one of the saddest days in metal (along with when Cliff Burton Died).........

Yes, it was sad when Cliff DIED, Dime was Fucking MURDERED in front of his fans ! If that IS not the saddest day in metal....I don't know what the Fuck is..

I don't mind the tributes and songs about it him, that's what Metal people do, they honor the fallen.

***BUT***

What I don't dig, is the relentless riding of his image by opportunistic, money grubbing, never new a day of metal in their life, "buisnessmen" that relentlessly turn out merch and GUITARS in the name of "Dime" Yeah, right, how about in the name of MONEY. Fuck You Too!

Get fucking Pearl off the stage... there is NO reason she should be on stage doing anything!

She is not a musician, she can't even sing. Blowing a musician or being related to one doesn't count for shit. She should never go on stage again. This brought the entire performance down.

Thx axxion, I am the one who said about Dime being a sad day!

For the idiots who say "move on" or "we (metal heads) have never talked about Dime before," you guys are idiots and not true metal heads!

Dime was always talked about...even if they don't say dime, have you ever heard of a band called Pantera??? He was THE only guitar player in that band and correct me if I am wrong but isn't Pantera one of the greatest heavy metal acts???????? If someone mentioned Pantera, it was the brothers they were talking about 9 out of 10 times!!!!!!!

YES they were!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So to answer back to all your stupid posts, we have talked about Dime all the time and just because they pay tribute to him almost 4 years later, why not???

You are missed Dime, I hope you are kicking the shit out of that asshole who shot you!!!!!!!!!

Hey Lars...when you play soft mellow songs you should follow suit and play softer and mellower. This is the bull in the china shop version here...

Kinda surprised Scott Ian could actually play something besides a power chord. Even a lead wow... !!!

I never did get to see Pantera live due to being out of town everytime they came, but i did see Damageplan in the smallest bar ever. Still one of the most unforgettable concerts. I've seen the videos of Dimebag, but to see him play live is something else. Anyone who has seen him knows exactly what I am talking about.
RIP Dime

I don't post alot unless I feel like man I've got somthing to put with this story, but Jesus,

I never loved Pantera From the Start but I started hearing more and more from them and just kept digging into all of their albums and found the songs I loved to play over and over and you know its not like they were the one band that changed everything for me but I really liked them, I did this with alot of bands and just found a few tracks from them all that I loved, just because you don't love every song doesn't mean your not a true fan, Anywho I keep seeing every time there is a Dime story that every single person keeps saying "ohhhh fuck this he's dead already give it up." and shit like that.

Next time there is a Dime story just stop and think, Someone who made a difference or just inspired someone or just fuck gave someone out there somthing to listen to and it brought a smile to just a random ass person's face, Is it really that bad that someone or a group of people want to honor that person??? Are you all that big of dicks that you would rather try and bring a whole group of people down compared to just scrolling over the story instead of clicking on it??? I'm just wondering who the fuck starts yelling ohhh man he's fucking dead give it up already when they see a John Lennon story or fucking Elvis.... ???

For the people who loved the guy and loved what he did just leave them alone its not like they are fucking sending you Dimebag subscriptions to your house and bothering you to give it a listen... you know where to get it and if you do then hell yeah good for you for giving it a try and if you haven't then hey thats yoru choice and if you have and you didn't like it. Killer to that as well I hope there is some band out there that does for you what Pantera or Dime or whoever does for alot of other people but fuck dude come on, I'm not some BLS duchebag who is trying to say show some respect but jesus the guy was shot in the head on stage and killed at his own show. Let me know of another situation where that's happened. Can you imagine that??? Or are you just too Metal and don't give a "fuck".

Lesson of the day, "just don't be a dick" there is a reason you have a scroll down bar, its to pass by the stuff your not needing or into, use it and let the people who care "care"

litttle D.

Ok the dude who said dimebag had no effect in metal is obviously some little geek that beats off over animals, most of my closest friends are incredibly talented musicians and they cant believe how good dimebag was he was easilly the best at creating riffs and break downs.

And johnathon davis is about as taleted as the peice of shit stain on my toilet bowl.

lol korn what is he like 10
