METALLICA's ULRICH On 'Death Magnetic': 'We Could Not Have Made A Better Album'
- Aug. 23, 2008
|
|
The latest issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine ( web site) includes an interview with METALLICA and report on the band's July 27, 2008 concert in Istanbul, Turkey. A couple of excerpts from the interview portion of the article follow. On staying relevant more than 25 years after the band's formation: James Hetfield (guitar, vocals): "Despite the earthquake that is going on in the record industry, this band is still relevant. We worked through our problems and now we've gone to work capturing our musical essence. We've challenged ourselves; we're hungry." "We understand the importance of staying relevant. We understand the importance of playing new songs. We understand how important it is not to become a nostalgia act. No one in the band wants us to be that. [ METALLICA] still has something to offer. No matter what the public thinks, as a band we will do what we have to do. We always have." On METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic": Lars Ulrich (drums): "I can honestly say that this album is the best album we could possibly have made. Can I guarantee that people will like it as much as they like our older albums? No, I can't; I can't offer any guarantees. But I promise you that we could not have made a better album." Kirk Hammett (guitar): "This album is some of the best music we've made in the past 15 years. A lot of the albums we made post-'Black' album were us trying to get away from a perceived METALLICA sound. That was the right thing for us at the time, but we don't feel we haveto do that anymore. And to be truthful, it's fun to play fast, to be heavy. We're now all on the same page with regards to that. I'd even go so far as to say that we even missed playing that way." James Hetfield: "This album has a hunger and a youthfulness about it. We had a new producer, a new bass player… and we worked really hard to get it right. So when you ask me if it is good, if it's really good, I can honestly say, 'Yes, it is!'" Kirk Hammett: "I think we're all aware of the danger of becoming a band that exists in the past. I think any band that's been around as long as we have has to face that. But [ 'Death Magnetic'] is going to prove to people that we never lost our ability to make an album like this. We just chose not to. And I'll stand by those words."

I am not excited for this album but I will find a way to listen to it with open ears.
I still want to thank James and Lars in person one day for kicking Dave out.........

So according to Hammett: "This album is some of the best music we've made in the past 15 years." Note that since Load, Reload and St. Anger were below average, this means that their new album is also below average, or average at best. Well, at least they are honest about it. Actually, I suspect Ulrich is right. This is probably the best they can do right now. But it's not good enough for a band of their status. They might just as well stop recording new records. For whatever reason, they lost the ability to write truly great songs a long time ago.
After the novelty of Death Magnetic wears off, the fans will be begging the band to cut the new tracks from the setlist and play all the old songs again. Metallica will be back to being a nostalgia act, like on their last couple of tours when they were almost exclusively playing songs from the first five albums (and most fans were still complaining about the one or two songs from Load and Reload that they played). So if the members of Metallica do not want to become a nostalgia act, they should just lay the band to rest while they still have some dignity left.

Just give me mostly heavy, a growling Jamez, quality sound production and I'll be thrilled.
Every note that's soft with the gentle James "singing" and sound quality that makes me wonder why I keep a high end stereo system will just make me sad.
I own every Metallica CD so I'm sure I'll get more than my money is worth out of this new one. I hope they let Robert stretch his legs a little.. I've been waiting for this with drool hanging off my chin for a long time now.

I think one of the reasons Metallica havn't called it quits yet is becuase none of them, save maybe Trujillo, hold any validity as musicians beyond 'tallica. What is Kirk going to do? Release a solo album? HA! You can only do so much with the minor pentatonic scale. Hetfield? Maybe a country album. Lars? I'm not even going to say anything. I'm sure they could make a living doing guest apperances, they are indeed legends. Hopefully this new album won't suck.

I think it's time for Metallica to prove WHO they really are: the best metal band on the planet. Those are heavy words you're saying Lars, but we have to give you the benefit of doubt. Anything better produced than "St.Anger" and faster than the "Load-Reload" albums should qualify as a potential comeback. It's time for Metallica to rule again!!!

And then why did you play "Masters Of Puppets" album in it's entiriety on the Europe tour a few years ago?
BTW....... nothing wrong with being in a "nostalgia act" as some of the best shows I have seen in recent years has been bands like Heaven And Hell, Blue Oyster Cult, Alice Cooper and Blackfoot.
You see the same people on you way down as you did on your way up.

After listening to their first single. I was kind of struck about how the song itself really looped between the various Metallica eras. Shades of Master, lots of Justice (especially "One",) and also newer sounds.
I didn't have high expectations, but I'm starting to sway that this one might be for real, unlike St. Anger. I'm still not expecting a masterpiece, and frankly, there has never been a band in any genre that has been able to match their older loved songs (although the newer Exodus/Testament, etc come close.)
Even At The Gates have recently said that they wouldn't be able to top "Slaughter Of the Soul," and so there'd be no point in even recording new material. And they're not even remotely as rich as Metallica. It's just the way it is, it's the way we age.
Without slamming the Metalliguys, it must be really difficult to make inspired, pissed off sounding music when pulling in high-7+ figures and living in $12m dollar mansions in SF. That would take the edge off of anyone.
I'll buy the album. If they can pull it off then it'll be a huge achievement.

the metallica "brand" has a built in 1 million cds sold as long as they want to cash in on it... they have nothing at all to lose except money by not putting albums out and money is all they care about at this point in thier career...

It got some melodies, and progressive structures too, from what i've heard in cyanide at least. It would probably be the best song of the album if it came out on St.Anger. But it's still 4.5 billions of light-years away from even the "Black Album". I wonder why they don't just tour again and again with their old stuff, they would play sold-out as well as with new material. Maybe it's just plainly for the money ... any new full-lenght from the franchise is sure to sell at least 3M copies or so from hardcore fans who would listen to litterally "any noise" tagged Metallica. A guy i know even says that st.anger's one of the best heavy metal record of all time. We're talking about an old-school thrash-metaller of 32 yo who must own a thousand vinyles and CDs. Mass hysteria or just plain denial ? Despite the lame titles again ... Unforgiven III, i mean come on, what's the point ... I wish it will be great stuff, but i really doubt it will be. Like many of us, they used to be my fav band back in the "master-justice" days ... Sadly, the last "above average" song they wrote imho is I Disappear.

why is everyone arguing with the statement when theyve only heard 2 songs at the most? and i know thats true cuz ive searched damn hard to find more new songs and they are not leaked at all. so listen to the damn album in full and then maybe your opinion will mean something. i dont like cyanide at all but structure and writing-wise the day that never came is just as strong as their old ballads.

Money grabbing cows? Yeah...ok...and tell me you'd be in a band and just be some lame ass puppet and kiss the record label's ass and write the same fucking album over and over ?/!! I don't think so...you couldnt hold Hetfield's jock strap...

They only play their old songs! saw them 2 years ago and they were the only band that didnt play any new song or new song for that matter. all the songs were at least 15 years old. the new album is ok, some of it is good. But Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, Overkill, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Ozzy and many more have been making mych better albums then this for the last 20 years.

great user name. Almost as good as neil youngs cocaine booger. Always makes me want to watch the last waltz again, whereby I am again reminded what a supreme talent Dylan really is. Only neil fallon can use the power of language as effectively, unlike metallica and most other bands these days who use the crudest of rhymes, sentences and word patterns to try to convince us that they are somehow credible 'songwriters'.
Death magnetic will stink, but still sell by the truckload.
And I used to love this band.
All we need now is sir David of levine to chip in with his condescending, patronizing, wiser-than-thou cod pseudo-intellectual psychobabble and tell us all what losers we are. Unless its a kiss thread whereby he wiill indulge in some mutual cyber masturbation when his sycophantic underlings log on...
Btw, when did the term 'to troll' become common parlance? actually..i've never been a big fan of Lars, his playing or his public persona. but everything i've heard him say over last couple months has been very reasonable and realistic. he seems fully aware of the what fans(if you can call fickle assholes that) are expecting, knows that not their not going to get it, and seems content with the album they made and seems just to hope the fans(or crybaby bitches, as they should be known) get that this is where Metallica is at now in their career. i still don't think much of him as a drummer, and i'm completely undecided on whether i like/dislike the new single, but i know beyond a doubt that Metallica's fans are a bunch of retarded idiots with the reasoning capabilities of 10 year old girls, and they'll whine and bitch about everything the band does instead of just shutting the fuck up and listening to something else. frankly, as ridiculous as this little bitch fest has gotten, i couldn't care less if these so called "fans" like the new Metallica or not. fuck them, as long the band is happy and healthy, more power to them. doesn't mean i'll buy the album, but it doesn't mean i won't either but there's one thing i definitely won't be doing. i won't be pissing myself in a moronic angry fit just because a bunch of guys in their mid 40s don't write the same songs they did in their late teens. just how fucking stupid are you people, anyway?

If you're going to put out a great CD, then just do it. Stop with all the teasers and hype building, it's pathetic. But I guess when you make a quote, "No matter what the public thinks, as a band we will do what we have to do. We always have." You actually meant you do what you have to do to make a buck. Now that metal is still strong, you gotta go with the flow and jump back on the wagon. Take a lesson from one of your peers from the Bay Area, Testament. They just put out a killer record (though they never sold out either) and they didn't spend months teasing and talking.

To all the people that say that the band failed because this album sucks is either psychic, or so full of hate for this band that nothing they write will make you happy. I can understand not liking a band and all, but the level of hatred that people have for this band really baffles me. Personally, when I hate a band, I ignore them. If Metallica retired tomorrow, I think the haters would have a harder time dealing with it than the fans would, at this point.

"This is the best album we could make". Unfortunately, you never should have made it. The production is just as bad as St. Anger and even though James has come back to his somewhat growl state, the album lacks. The drums are a joke, the guitar riffs are weak and the lyrics are sub par. I've been a fan of Metallica since Ride The Lightning, so listening to this has shown me that it's definately time for them to retire or at the least, stick with the Pre-load music. This as always is my opinion and you don't have to like it.

you mean the metal than no one listens to because its too concerned with being "underground" to do anything thats worth listening to, or hack bands who just make the same album over and over again, then yes, it will be nothing like that.

honest intie I think. we all know DM won't be as nearly as great as the 4 first albums, those groundbreaking days are long gone. BUT at this stage I'm sure it's gonna be a decent record, if not actually good. bring it on, I'm curious!

by the way,
Meshuggah's hardly underground. Their best days are also behind them. Post Chaosphere stuff's nothing special.
If you want some actual underground metal, don't look for it on Blabbermouth. Idiots.

Why in the fuck do some of you assholes on here think that Metallica should stop making albums, just because the new album may not be up to par with past ones?? That is simply PATHETIC. Why should you be the judge of what they should or shouldn't do? I happen to be one of the millions of fans out there that realize that Metallica are just mid-40's guys that are trying to have a good time, and write a fun record. And I, as many, many others, will enjoy this album because I won't be holding it up on a pedestal with all the past albums. Think of this....do you think Metallica or any of their fans really give a flying fuck how you feel about their music?? My guess is NO. That is all.

For people who really hate this band you guys pay a lot of attention to them. If I dont like something i stay away from it and dont talk about it. You can never recreate greatness, Metallica will never make another M.O.P . They are 40 yrs old now, not pissed off 21 yr old screaming about death. Being mature with your music is not a bad thing. Look at Opeth and fucking Clutch. Clutch is not the same band when they started and I would say they are much better now. Not saying Metallica has written stuff just as or better then Clutch, but thats what happens, these bands get older and so dose the music. The ones that dont, like Deicide, who use to be a fan of but after a while the whole "We are fast and evil" just get fucking boring. Same with most Black and Death Metal. Even the great band Death matured its music at the end. All i will say is if you dont like it, DONT FUCKING LISTEN TO IT AND SHUT THE FUCK UP! Thank you for you time.

People who have something less than positive to say about lame and weak bands like Metallica come here to discuss it because Blabbermouth is a FORUM in case you hadn't noticed. This is a place to post news and discuss it. Blabbermouth is NOT a Metallica fanclub blog, it is not a "I Love Metallica and Want to Talk About How Much I Love Metallica with Other People Who Only Want To Talk About How Much We Love Metallica" site either.
I think the more appropriate question is why are YOU here?

But if you really hate or dislike something why spend so much time say that you hate it when you can just say you dont like and move on with your life.Im here to read the news about Metallica and post about the new not why i love them but the news that was posted. I hate rap music but i dont go on rap forums everyday and say I hate rap and this rapper sucks or come to this forum and keep saying that Metallica will never make another good album day in and day out.Yes Metallica's albums after black were not good, but I dont come here eveyday when a new Metallica post comes up and keep saying they suck dead since 91. I just dont understand why people hate something they must say it everyday.

Even though I don't agree with PETER NORTH'S LOAD, I think the name is pretty funny. Right up there with "Neil Young's cocaine Booger". I don't think Neil Young ever even was into coke. He never really got into hard drugs. I've heard him say it. A lot of performers would be straight up about that shit too.
Anyway, I like the new single. I think it's a great tune. I don't expect Metallica to be what they were in the 80's or to sound like Testament or Exodus. Those bands are great and they stuck to thrash and Metallica didn't. I just don't give a shit. IF THE FUCKING SONG IS COOL THEN THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS!! SO FUCK THE WHINING ABOUT METALLICA DOING WHAT THEY DID 20 YEARS AGO. IF THE MUSIC IS GOOD THEN ENJOY IT! I just don't want to expect anything but good tunes EVEN if it's not speed metal of the 80's which I love to death! We all know this isn't going to be Kreator or Slayer of the 80's. That's Ok as long as the music is good.
People are so damn political about this. Even the haters are concerned based on the posts they HAVE to seem to write in here. Y'know, you don't HAVE to write shit in here. I guess it is a place to place your views so I kinda understand.
Bottom line, Cyanide, to me, was Ok so far. The Day that Never Comes are Never Ends or whatever the fuck it's called, is a good tune. If the other songs are this good, then I'll buy the album. I hope they're even better though.
Has'nt anyone ever heard of a band that writes great albums and then progressively gets worse but then has a comeback. I sure have. Not every band makes amazing records every time. If Metallica makes a great hard rock, rock, OR metal album, then I'm cool with that. I don't even own the last few albums because I didn't care for them really. I do like what I have heard so far here. I don't expect many bands to ever live up to the first 4 Metallica albums. They are some of the best EVER in metal. This new album isn't going to be able to be compared to the classic Metallica because it's going to be SOMEWHAT like apples and oranges. If it's good, then that is all that matters. Bottom line.

I got a swelling hard-on about the potential this album has. I liked Cyanide, I really liked The Day That Never Comes and I hear elements of the old good stuff I haven't heard in a long time. I'm definitely drinking the Kool-Aid now.
