QUEENSRŸCHE: New Album To Be Produced By JASON SLATER - Aug. 25, 2008
According to The Breakdown Room, Jason Slater, the producer, engineer and songwriter of QUEENSRŸCHE's 2006 release "Operation: Mindcrime II", has confirmed that he is producing the band's as-yet-untitled next studio album. He also revealed that Kelly Gray (QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist/producer/engineer from 1998 to 2001) is engineering the record. Slater is quoted as saying, "The plan is that we'll [Kelly and Jason] mix it together, but who the fuck knows?! Everything always seems to change at the last second. I'm pretty happy with the way it's shaping up. The focus is on great songs that the band is proud of and the fans will like."

QUEENSRŸCHE performed with an orchestra (dubbed the "Empire Orchestra") for the first time ever Saturday night (August 23) at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington. The concert was part of Seattle station KISW 99.9 FM's Pain in the Grass 2008 event, also featuring SEETHER, SHINEDOWN, SEVENDUST, DROWNING POOL, JET BLACK STARE and EARSHOT.

Robert Williams of Metal-Rules.com conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate at the South Texas Rock Fest, which was held July 11-13 at the Javelina Harley-Davidson Festival grounds in San Antonio, Texas. Watch the chat below.

Geoff Tate will perform a series of exclusive solo shows in conjunction with his Insania wine collaboration with Walla Walla, Washington-based 3 Rivers Winery.

On Saturday, September 20, a special performance will take place at 3 Rivers Winery with two additional performances taking place the Friday before and the Sunday after at the Knitting Factory in Boise, Idaho and the Knitting Factory in Spokane, Washington, respectively.

The forthcoming September shows will mark his first solo performances since 2002 and it's likely that more promotional tour dates surrounding the official launch of the new red wine signature blend will be announced shortly.

When they did Mindcrime II, I was excited to hear it. I don't know if the production was bad, or the song writing wasn't as good as usual, but it really sucked. (Just my opinion)

Rockenfeld's drumming really declined and not having Chris DeGarmo around has really hurt this band.

And I don't like to write this because these guys are great musicians and I really hope they succeed with this album (I'm old)

Their lowest phase was between Promised Land and OM:II.

II was a solid album, a few really good tracks, a few bad ones and a few ok ones, it wasn't really necessary though.

Promised Lands is the best and the best sounding, they need that team back behind the sound. OMC2 was great but the production blew, the live album sounded better

I agree with alot of posters.

Although I think there were some good moments on OM2, I think the production was terrible.

They really need to rethink this decision.

Operation: Mindcrime II was a very good album and I'm happy they're using the same producer. But Kelly Gray? For those who don't know, this is the same Kelly Gray that produced Nevermore's ill-fated Enemies of Reality album, which is legendary for its awful production. I don't know if Gray has had a hand in producing any of Ryche's latest efforts, but I'd think twice before letting him engineer a record.

...was actually IN Queensryche for one album and produced it as well. I quite like Slater's work on O:M II, even if I do find it lyrically sub-par to just about any other QR album (and, well, cheesy in a lot of spots... but that's Geoff Tate's fault). Hopefully Slater can get the guys back on track now that the unnecessary sequel is out of their system, and they can come up with something that lives up to their reputation.

This is actually a pretty decent move. If they can't get DeGarmo back, having the same guy who helped write Mindcrime II (which was QR's most popular record since DeGarmo left) is a step in the right direction.

Queensryche hasn't had a consistent person working with them for two albums straight in a long time and you gotta figure that they'll build on the high points of Mindcrime II.

Slater also did Take Cover, and aside from the vocals sounding like shit, the music really was good. If that is the heaviness the new record is going with Slater involved, that's a good thing.

Honestly, on my list of complaints about O:MII, production was not one of them. I think Slater did a decent job with the production. It is clear (especially given that he had a hand in the writing) that Slater is a fan of the band and did the best with what he had to help the band offer up an album that maintained some feel of (and a few subtle throwback to) the original (which is arguably one of the best albums ever recorded) while still allowing the sequel to stand up on its own. Given what he is working with, I do look forward to hearing how the new ablum will sound.

While there hasn't been an EPIC Queensryche record for a long, long time, without Slater's involvement this band would be done. Bag on O:MII if you must, but Slater was working with some pretty tight constraints, having to write an album that sounded like QR and would live up the hype as a follow-on to one of the most revered albums ever. A very tall order. He did well. While there are some low points on the record to be sure (especially the ending), there are also some gems. Musically the writing was solid. And as mentioned above, the musical arrangements on Take Cover were really good. So I'm happy to see Slater keeping the QR legacy alive. If Kelly Gray can bring some cohesion to the process, then it will be good to have him there as well. While I don't love his production work, he has a solid history with the band, and can probably help navigate the band through the recording process. Unless you've already completely dismissed Queensryche, this announcement can only be good news!

Slater's alright but keep Kelly Gray out of it. He ruined Queensryche and he produced the worst Dokken record of all time (Shadowlife). As far as I'm concerned, he's poison.
