MEGADETH Preparing To Record New Album - Aug. 27, 2008
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has revealed in an online posting that acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (NEVERMORE, EXODUS, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD) will fly over to Southern California on September 8 to "tweak some last-minute stuff" at Mustaine's new recording studio before returning again at the end of the month, presumably to helm the recording sessions for the group's new album.

Sneap produced MEGADETH's last album, "United Abominations", which came out in May 2007 via Roadrunner Records. Mustaine previously stated about working with Andy, "We'd been working with Jeff Balding, who does a great job. But we knew we needed something else to give the material that extra push, so we brought in Andy. It was cool because he isn't like some big rock-star producer. He was just another Joe to me. So we were trading jokes and laughing and it was fun. My sense of humour is pretty close to a British one, so we worked well together. Also, Andy told me I was the reason that he got into playing metal in the first place, which was really flattering."

MEGADETH's forthcoming album will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick (NEVERMORE, JAG PANZER), who replaced Glen Drover at the end of last year.

Megadeth are probably my favourite ever band. I look forward to another album and UK tour. Could've done without the new greatest hits cd though, I own almost every song on their several times. I'd much prefer a new live album.

Why don't bands release live albums these days? They seem to be dying out. Shame.

Glad to hear they are recording again. Can't go wrong with Andy Sneap in fold!

I suggest people that dislike Mustaine`s work just don`t listen to it rather than spout immature bile on web forums.

To claim "no-one`s interested" is ridiculous, Megadeth are one of the biggest selling metal acts of all time and their last album charted well all over the world. There are plenty of us looking forward to another one. I don`t see that a 2 year wait is that short for a new album anyway, plenty of bands take 5 years plus and still releae shit...

... plus Andy Sneap is responsible for some of the best produced metal albums of the decade: Nevermore (!!), Kreator (!!), Testament, Arch Enemy...

I hope that he'll name a track Deth MegnatiX or sth. (given he has the music to back it up).

And Dave published first rate stuff after CtX: The System has Failed is easily a Top5 Deth-album and Youthanasia is still listenable from beginning to end, albeit being a minor disappointment after its stellar predecessors.

Dave Mustaine is Megadeth and he is writing the best music of his life. Megadeth's last albums have been my favorites and that is coming from a long time fan. I think that with Chris Broderick on board this new album is going to be awesome. Metallica should learn from Dave Mustaine on how to write great songs and crushing music.

I can't totally judge based on the 10 sec. audio clips, but after a few listens to My Apocalypse and Day That Never Comes (DTNC), I appreciate Mustaine's return to form better.

Both Metallica's new songs have heavier, speedier riffs than anything in the last three albums. But they sound forced and lack coherence. One hears elements of every old album in DTNC but nothing seems to bring the riffs into one fluid effort. Not to rip off the first reviews, but truly, there are very few hooks or catchiness. Kirk's solo's are fast but don't match James' rhythm with any creativity. He brings back the same pentatonic licks from the past but they don't flow like they once did.

Megadeth's United Abominations had its faults: Songs like Blessed are the Dead and Dead to Me are fillers that seem rushed uneccessary at times. What's more, Dave is equally guilty of relying on E minor blues scales for every one of his solos. (He also admits he's not a good soloer and is working on that issue) But tracks like Sleepwalker, Washington is Next and Burnt Ice have memorable choruses and solos that stay with you.

I will likley buy Metallica's new one. I'm pleased that they are writing in a heavier vein but I don't believe the album will be captivating like anything 1991 and before.

On the contrary, I think Chris Broderick, should he be allowed to write on Megadeth's new one, could be a great push back towards the solo driven tracks of the Marty Friedman days. It will depend on Dave's ability to crank out new ideas for driving yet imaginative riffs.

I totaly agree with you on the fact that the new Metallica material sounds forced and doesen't flow! i noticed it right away from the first released track! i'm glad that the effort to come back is more worthwhile listening to than St.Anger, but i feel that there was more fluidity in Load and Re-load than what i've heard so far.

UA was a good album IMO. 3 out of 5 or 6/7 out of 10. It had its faults.

I don't know why everyone rags on pentatonics so much, they're badass and keep the connection to the blues and classic rock, where, much to the chagrin of elitist metallers, it all comes from in the end. And there is to my ear also non-pentatonic stuff in My Apocalypse, especially that snakey run-down at the end of the solo, although I haven't gone so far as to try and work it out (and would probably suck!)

Do you all wanna be neoclassical Yngwie-alikes or something?! Dimebag played pentatonics almost exclusively.

I am a long-time Megadeth fanboy and felt like United Abominations was not a very inspired album with relatively uninspired players. I think that under these new circumstances, Broderick/Sneap (well that's not new)/Death Magnetic, Dave will really pump out some quality stuff that will make himself go "oh fuck this is cool". No matter what anybody says, Metallica is like that ex-girlfriend everyone has had to Dave and everytime she gets a new boyfriend it's going to light a match under Dave's ass. If Dave can embrace a few modern things, this could be one of his best albums yet.

God no! There are enough Yngwie knock-offs to last the metal community a life time. And I have nothing against playing pentatonic scales. Hell, they're all I can play! ; )

However, I'd expect more from either Mustaine or Hammet after 25+ years in the music industry. Especially from Hammet, because he has had all this time to do one thing: better his guitar playing! He doesn't have even half the responsibility Dave does and a frontman, businessman, and songwriter (not to mention, rhythm guitar player and vocalist).

I can't speak intelligently on Dime's stuff but I would hope that one hears some progression in his soloing from album to album.

Love Megadeth , they are what has kept me alive while Metallica was busy blowing "loads" in the late 90's but with the release of this new Metallica album ("My Apocalypse" anyways....) it sounds to be a possible restoration of competition between the 2.
For Megadeth fans and the entire metal community , that should mean very good things for the release of the upcoming Megadeth album.
Screw the few minutes of thrash on each 5 minute song Dave (although a huge fan of UA) make an album entirely composed of thrash front to back, lord knows Broderick will help now that he's on board.
While Dave is clearly the more prevalent force in metal at the moment, if Metallica can release a real shredder , we all know it will only motivate Mustaine to create an equally ass kicking metal album and that my friends, will benefit us all!

The last megadeth album was very good and many times better than any thing some other band that the first letter is Metallica have done in 20 years.
and of course Mustaine tries to have the riffs a little difficult and hard to play. thats one of the things metal is about, trying to do new and challenging stuff, not the same thing oer and over again.
Hope the next album will be good as well!
