DAVID COVERDALE Thinks LED ZEPPELIN Should Record New Album With Guest Vocalists
- Dec. 17, 2008
|
|
According to The Pulse of Radio, David Coverdale says he told Jimmy Page to back off on trying to reunite LED ZEPPELIN for a world tour and record a band album with superstar guest vocalists. Coverdale, who teamed up with Page for the short-lived 1993 COVERDALE-PAGE album and tour, explained to Uncut, "My suggestion to him when I saw him in the summer was to do what Carlos Santana did with 'Supernatural'. Get a selection of people in, because there's no question John Paul Jones writes fucking kick-ass music. I said Joe Elliott and me would come in and do a track rather than the focus be on one person." He went on to say, "Will people be willing to see three-quarters of the family with a guest — a cousin twice removed? I'm as curious as anyone to see how it works out... Change is good as long as you fucking deliver. I hope it comes together for him because, Jesus, he deserves it." Coverdale says that his most cherished collaboration was his 1993 team-up with Page, which led him to rethink how he chooses guitarists. "When I worked with Jimmy Page, that was totally inspiring for me, and you can hear that on the COVERDALE-PAGE album," he said. "And that was a great parameter for me to look at. The only people I would be prepared to work with are ones who would, who I'd feel could drive me, inspire me to go for notes I've never gone for before." COVERDALE-PAGE performing LED ZEPPELIN's "Black Dog":

a full scale zep. reunion would be a big mistake, plant is only one to realize this.i love zep. but they should leave well enough alone! maybe a show here or there would be cool for the right reason's but a tour would only make them out to be....well you get the picture.

Coverdale Page was a great album. Coverdale is a far better vocalist than Robert Plant...tool or not...and regardless of what whitesnake has done... he could deliver on the Zep catalog live far better than Plant could ever dream of IMO. He's the first person I thought of when I heard they were going to tour w/o Plant.
and if anyone is a tool here it's Bobbo Plant w/ his prima donna bullshit.

"DAVID COVERDALE Thinks LED ZEPPELIN Should Record New Album With Guest Vocalists"
This is not a good idea. Led Zeppelin is not a novelty act. Please do not consider this, it's Robert Plant or nothing. People are losing sight on how important this band is to the world of music. It's legacy should not be toyed with.

They should go for it and Joe Elliot and David C. would be great as guest stars. Shouldn't call it Led Zeppelin though because it;s not.
Whitesnake's 'Good to be bad' and Leppard's 'Songs from the sparkle lounge' are two of this years best albums. Would be great to see Elliot get a chance to play something with Page and Jones and show the world how talented he is.

Is an AMAZING album. It's a real shame that tour never made it anywhere but Japan. Bash Coverdale all you want, but he's a world class vocalist who has done great work through the years with Whitesnake AND Deep Purple and never gets the recognition he deserves. And he can deliver far better than Plant can - at this point or any other.
That being said, I hate the 'guest vocalist' idea. Santana did that so he could get other people to come in with songs and he can just play his same hackneyed riffs over them and claim them as his own. Just because it struck a chord with old white ex-hippies doesn't mean he's not a parasite hack that does NOT rock.
Why not just do another record with Cov and take that show on the road - it wouldn't be the massive success the Zep reunion would be, but they'd have their integrity and do shows they can be proud of and get their rocks off.

One of the above posters is right, Plant is the only one who sees the big picture here, don't tarnish the legacy of the greatest rock band in the world, just let it go, you did your show, maybe do a few here and there is everyone is up for it, but don't destroy the legacy. And Plant is not a tool, he's an incredibly rich man who, I think, actually cares about the legacy of Led Zep, and also, because he's so rich, has the ability to follow his muse whereever it takes him, and at the moment he is clearly into the music he's doing with Alison Krauss, which is actually very cool. If he did Zep now it'd be about money, plain and simple. I respect him for not taking the easy road!

I don't know about you guys but I've had it with what I call "headband rock". bands, especially vocalists, should really pack it in before it gets embarrassing, and plant knows that so good for him.
if coverdale can still hit those notes like he did in 93 they should do an album and tour with him, he's the obvious choice.

If they do this, they need a 14 track album with 14 singers My choices.
1. David Coverdale 2. Steven Tyler 3. Anne Wilson 4. Myles Kennedy 5. Geddy Lee 6. Maynard James Keenan 7. Lenny Kravitz 8. Bono (He always ends up on these) 9. Sammy Hagar 10. Axl Rose 11. Ian Gillan 12. Ronnie James Dio 13. Bruce Dickinson Chesney, 14. Rob Halford 15. Geoff Tate
No fucking Joe "I know Hockey" Elliot. I would take Brett Michaels, Vince Neil, Ozzy, Stephen Pearcy, Jon Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Kenny Rogers, Murray Wiggle, Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Snoop , Chris Jericho or Sarah Palin all agead of that fuckstick.
But seriously, they need to cut the bullshit and if Robert Plant can't do it, they need the only other man capable of bringing the rock the way it neds to be brung. BRING FORTH THE MIGHTY TENACIOUS D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coverdale is one of the great vocalists of all time, period.
The only evidence you need is 'Burn' by Deep Purple, 'Stormbringer' by Deep Purple, and 'Come Taste the Band' by Deep Purple, his solo albums) are also good, even the ones he made well deserved money on.
He is saying this shit to piss off Robert Plant. They have a long standing feud.
With that said, the only led Zeppelin albums I want to listen to have already been made. I don't want any fake Zeppelin albums tarnishing their legacy like Pink Floyd has.

1. King Diamond 2. Warrell Dane 3. David Bowie 4. Neil Young 5. Tom Waits 6. Aaron Stainthorpe 7. Tarja Turunen 8. Tricky 9. Nergal 10. Jim Gillette
Now hearing King Diamond belt out Stairway to Heaven... that would be classic. Just imagine it...'and shes buying a stairway...to heaven...he he he he heeee'
Warrell Dane would kick those songs ass!
Bowie would turn them into his own songs
Neil Young and Jimmy onstage together!?!?!
Tom Waits would kill this material.
Theyd have to slow the tunes down but My Dying Brides Aaron Stainthorpe would deliver a painful rendition of some of Zeps slower tunes.
Tarja Turunen for the $$$$$$$.
Tricky and Zep would have to re-arrange their tunes for this combo to work. Jimmy and Tricky co-producing likely to wow the soundtrack crowd.
Again, Nergal singing Starway to Heaven, sure to be a classic.
Jim Gillette need I say more?

what?!? nothing wrong with gilmour's version of pink floyd. yes rogers was a genius when it came to writing their albums, but gilmour's voice and guitar playing were more than enough to carry the band. i saw them back in '94 without waters, and i saw waters a year ago by himself. they both sounded great doing what they're doing. they can get by just fine without each other.

Coverdale-Page was a very good album. and Whitesnake are very good too, saw them live this summer and they were great. and i can understand Plant, he doesnt want to do this old stuff to often, he's more concerned with his new stuff just like real artist should do, people who want some nostalgia can go listen to the albums or some other bands. But i have to admit i would be the first line for tickets if Zep would come together again and i hope they will, but if not then its ok too.

I have been amazed in this last year since the 02 concert at some of the opinions that have been expressed by fans and celebrity musicians alike regarding what Jimmy Page should and should not do regarding recording new music and playing live.
Jimmy Page had his people put out a release stating that without the involvement of Robert Plant that no project (recording or touring) would be called Led Zeppelin. End of story.
It seems to be OK for Robert Plant to record an album with Alison Krauss without one original song on it and then tour with her where the set list consists of multiple Led Zeppelin songs.
It was OK for Jimmy Page to go on tour with The Black Crowes and perform Zeppelin songs for over half of the concerts with Chris Robinson on vocals.
It was OK for Page and Plant to go on tour together and perform Zeppelin songs together.
It was OK for John Paul Jones to play some Zeppelin songs in his solo concerts over the years.
It was OK for Jason Bonhan to perform with Jimmy Page for the Outrider tour nearly 20 years ago.
BUT, IT'S NOT OK for Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and Jason Bonham to either record some new material under a different name or to go on tour under a different name and play some Led Zeppelin songs with someone other than Robert Plant on vocals? That is absurd!
I certainly agree with David Coverdale on this one point: Jimmy Page should have many years ago done an album of original material in collaboration with one or many vocalists/co-writers. Jimmy Page is far too talented to have been sitting on the sidelines all this time and not have put out new material.
If Jimmy Page chooses now to record some original material with John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham with one or more vocalists I bet it would kick some serious ass. (And no, once again, they should not call it Led Zeppelin.)

If they were to have guset vocalists for a tour that would be a better idea like the Freddie Queen tribute concert.

There are plenty of boots out there of the 93 Japan Coverdale/Page tour. DC struggled mightly with the Zep catalog and had to rely on the other band members back up vox kinda like when he was in Deep Purple and had Glenn Hughes cover anything beyond his one octave range.
Can't see DC singing anything non bonheaded like Tangerine, The Rain Song, Ten Years Gone, Achilles Last Stand, etc. without slathering it in his patented Coverdale cheddar. Slide it In or Spit it Out? Sure Davey...

Pick Lemmy Kilminster! Just listen to his cover of Maiden's The Trooper to see pure vocal skill. No other guy can reduce a melody, no matter how rich, to one single note. :p
PS - Coverdale sings Zep songs like an annoying Plant clone. Maybe a good (skilled) one, but still annoying. And he basically thinks "Hey, if they need ten singers instead of one, the probability that I get picked increases." Screw you mister, please stay away from anything named Led Zeppelin.

Santana tried that and look how that ended up. No longer will he be known as a brilliant and innovative guitarist because now he will be known as a mediocre guitar player who relies on guest singers who are the flavour of the month.
Either get Planty back on the mic or do something else like Heaven and Hell.

Well I think the Bohnam, Jones, and Page should do some new music. Especially Jones; he still writes killer riffs.
Who cares what it's called...
Do these guys ever give the impression that they EVER cared what their band name was? LZ was a self-deprecating name to begin with, like how alt-rock bands name themselves a put-down.
it would be foolish not to. JPJ's solo records are full of great riffs, and now that they got something to prove...

1/Sammy Hagar 2/Ren or 3/Stimpy
WTF is Covardale trying to do? Get Elliott to sing with LP? Best comment about Leppard comes from DIO http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zOwZBo8FQvo
