DEEP PURPLE Albums Being Reissued On SHM-CD - Dec. 18, 2008
According to a posting on The Deep Purple Appreciation Society web site, the first three DEEP PURPLE reunion albums — "Perfect Strangers" (1984), "The House Of Blue Light" (1987) and "Nobody's Perfect" (1988) — will get the SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) treatment in paper sleeve editions. They will be issued in this format in Japan in late February 2009 as limited editions.

According to Positive-Feedback.com, Super High Material CD is an improved version of the Compact Disc material that uses super-quality, enhanced transparency polycarbonate material developed for use in LCD screens. They will play in any CD player. Universal Music Japan and JVC co-developed the SHM-CD. They report that the new material allows the pits to be formed more precisely plus eliminates laser splatter. The signal characteristics are improved as a result with overall lower distortion and better musicality.

I have been investigating this format for awhile now. So far as I can tell, no - the claims of improved sound are false.

Never understood the attraction with Blackmore or Deep Purple. Not bashing just never got it! Anyone want to enlighten me?

While I'll never dispute the impact Blackmore and Deep Purple have had on the evolution of heavy metal, the Steve Morse-era albums (Purpendicular, Abandon, Bandanas, Rapture Of The Deep) are some of the greatest albums ever released... by anybody. My god, such beautiful stuff.

Couldn't agree more! I am a diehard fan of every DP era, but part of me wishes Steve Morse were always the guitarist for Deep Purple. Listening to albums like Purpendicular and Bananas makes me wonder what other brilliant music they could have written together.

Of course, from Blackmore we got all those classics from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I'll take those anyday.

seeing Blackmore live back in his heyday-1970 to 1885 was something special, live intangibles that dont translate onto a recording. He really put on a great show night after night. I thought Joe Satriani sounded fantastic as a replacement, too bad that didn't last.
I've seen the Morse version live and no offense to all but Morse is no Blackmore.

Made in Japan is arguably the best live L.P. ever recorded! Ian Gillan hit notes on that CD that reached Pluto and are still being picked up by satellites in distant galaxies; "Let's go Space truckin', anyone?" I've enjoyed every line-up (I'm partial to Mk. II of course) mainly because Purple has always worked with virtuoso musicians and there's also a dynamic to their sound that just mops the floor with just about any other band I can think of (outside of maybe the classic UFO line-up and Thin Lizzy when they weren't ridin' the horse too much).... Can you tell that the Purple one's are my fave's???

Morse is no Blackmore ... but who is ... Blackmores in a league of his own. To me the best Morse era Purple record is Banana's, probably their best since Perfect Strangers.

How a digital signal can be improved only by a simple change of meterial of a disc ? Commercial bullshit ! The albums are great but there is no sound improvement here !

Of course not! He isn't Blackmore, and he doesn't want to be, but he can do Blackmore to a T. In a band like DP, that's huge.
