VELVET REVOLVER Singer Search Looking Up
- Feb. 12, 2009
|
|
|
There's been little news out of the VELVET REVOLVER camp lately regarding a new singer for the band, although auditions have reportedly been ongoing. Bassist Duff McKagan told The Pulse of Radio this week that the group has been a little frustrated with the submissions they've gotten and even wondered if they would ever find the right guy. But McKagan also said that things have recently taken a positive turn. "In the last, I would say, about eight weeks, we got three guys in that were all really good — like, far and above, more fitting than the rest," he said. "So I can say this much: we're headed in a very positive direction, and you might be hearing something soon."
VELVET REVOLVER has been searching for a new vocalist since dismissing Scott Weiland last April.
Although several names have been rumored online, the only singer known to have auditioned with the band is ex-SPACEHOG frontman Royston Langdon.
VELVET REVOLVER also parted ways with RCA Records late last year and has not announced a new deal yet.
Duff McKagan's side band, LOADED, will issue its third album next month, while McKagan continues his career as a columnist at SeattleWeekly.com and a financial columnist at Playboy.com.
VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash is working on a solo album, while drummer Matt Sorum recently launched a clothing line and store.

THE FEMALES SWOON OVER HIM, HE IS A MEGA-SUPERSTAR IN HIS AUSSIE-LAND.
AND V.R. COULD THEN COVER: "TOMORROW" "ISRAEL'S SON" "ONE WAY MULE" OF AND GET THIS , SILVERCHAIR HAVE A SONG CALLED "THE DOOR"
THEY COULD DO "THE DOOR" AND "GET OUT THE DOOR" BACK TO BACK LIVE IN CONCERT.
THERE IS ONLY ONE SINGER FOR VELVET REVOLVER DANIEL JOHNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL FORGIVE THEM FOR LETTING GO OF WEILAND IF THEY DO SO.

Hey T-Boner,
I'm also a fan of Scott (I don't really bash him, I love STP), but there are bands out there that made it from a nobody. Very good example is CREED now known as ALTER BRIDGE. The new singer is pure GOLD in my book. The two albums AB made shatter a lot of Rock music and probably most of what Creed used to be -- I wasn't a big Creed fan then.
Slash and Duff deserve to make GOOD songs again, it's been waaaaaay too long.

I'd love Lenny in VR, great voice, song writer, or was. but I don't think his heart would be in it for long if he did. He passed. I doubt many blabbermouthers would even like him...Rod Jackson, musically, was nothing like Lenny. Rod....and you're right, Slash 2 solo albums were quite good, from a guitar rock album kind of thing. Not commercial, but dare I say I'd much rather listen to then...ah never mind. BUT IM IN FEAR NOW(JUST HIT ME) JOHNS IS MORE MELLOW NOW IN HIS OLDER YEARS, MELLOW LIKE WEILAND TYPE MELLOW IN WRITING SKILLS.

i'd have been the first guy on here rooting for them to go with kravitz, or astbury, or corabi, someone who'd make for an interesting combination with the guns guys and has a legacy of their own, much like weiland did. but a while back there was a story about how VR was supposedly looking into this "unknown" singer from an irish band called million dollar reload, so i went and checked out his band....and holy SHIT that dude can sing his fucking ass off! he's like a combination of bon scott and axl, yet you also hear big weiland-esque melodies coming in and out of the songs as well. tall order i know....but that's exactly what he sounds like, no shit. i liked the second snakepit cd too, but rod jackson only WISHES he had pipes like this guy. i liked the mayfield 4 too, miles kennedy ain't bad but he also doesn't have that grit to his voice really that slash & co seem to write really well with either. and the irish guy's band also has several tunes on their myspace page that blow anything off libertad out of the water in terms of song structure etc, so the guy must be adept at executing a catchy, well written song as well.....tunes like dead like you, livin in the city, goodnight new york, you can't stop me from flying....solid fucking tunes. i never heard anything about him as a possible candidate again so who knows if it was just a rumor or a promo stunt, but if it was then they really should look into that guy seriously....he's fucking awesome. shit i even went and bought his band's cd, it's killer. straight up kickass rock n roll and great songs. but more than anything else i hope to god they don't go with the spacehog guy....ugh they were fucking terrible the first time, i definitely don't want to hear a harder rocking version of spacehog now made up of members of a band i used to like.

am I missing something about Daniel Johns. Seriously, did he blossom into a great musician? I admit to have lost touch with him, last I heard they were Nirvana wanna bes, no where in the Slash league. Again, I haven't paid attention though. And TBone says one of their albums is a 10. Is this overexaggeration? I'll listen if not.

If the last you've heard of them was the Nirvana Comparison (1995-1997), yes you're fallen about a decade behind. Silverchair has developed a very unique sound - if you haven't heard them since the 90's you wouldn't recognize them. They're remained a pretty big band around the world, sans the US. Though in 2006 they sort of rebroke the US scene.
To be fair I wouldn't even classify their last record as a rock record.

Seriously... Slash needs to call up Nikki Sixx and have him hook him up with James Michael, singer of Sixx A.M. He's got that L.A. vibe that VR needs, and can play not only guitar, but keys, drums, and a bunch of other stuff, and is a great songwriter.
Myles Kennedy is making another Alter Bridge record and working on a solo album, plus he already turned VR down during their first singer search. I don't think that's gonna happen.

Come on, the second Snakepit incarnation and Ain't Life Grand album. It was fuckin' rockin', fast and energetic hard rock with a hint of blues here and there. And Jackson's vocals were mad. I'll jump around in joy if I read VR continues with Jackson - it'll be like winning in a lottery or something, just too good to be true.
Seriously, I'd prefer to once again see a band featuring Slash and Jackson together, than even a reunion of Duff/Slash/Matt with Axl. 2nd Snakepit > UYI-era GNR.

yeah, i can see that comparison, they're definitely in the same vein. but then again so is velvet revolver, and in slash's book he said josh was good but too one dimensional for them. which i can also see, even though i do like buckcherry...though i do think he does what he does quite well, even if it's limited. hell that never stopped mick jagger lol. but i think the dude from MDR has a much wider range than josh does, better grasp of melody and his phrasing is great as well so he might be more what they were looking for in the first place. regardless, for a dude who's unknown here in the us at least and on some tiny little label, damn that dude rocks and there's some great tunes there. but who knows anyway, coulda been just a promo stunt.
anyway, keith caputo would also be interesting....though i'm afraid that would be seen as VR grabbing the guy most capable of doing a weiland impression. but as far as criminally underrated singers go, keith's right up there with john corabi, whitfield crane, jason mcmaster and kory clarke in my book. all those guys are monster vocalists i think and deserve far more success than they've had.

MGR- Snakepit didn't have ANY songs.
Minutiae1- That's great he can play all that, but, who cares? You think Sorum's going to need him to fill in so he can go take a dump. Plus, why would he have to call Nikki Sixx to get the number. Guy probably still works a day job in Hollywood.
Mark Lanegan would never happen. There's no way he'd have anything to do with this.
Caputo is a cool suggestion.
