EDDIE VAN HALEN: More HUSTLER Interview Excerpts Available - Mar. 4, 2009
According to the Van Halen News Desk, the current issue of Hustler magazine has an exclusive interview with Eddie Van Halen. Highlights from the chat follow below.

Hustler: When can we hope for the new CD?

Eddie Van Halen: First, Wolfgang graduates, and then Janie [Eddie's fiancée/publicist Janie Liszewski] and I are getting married. Then we'll sit down, give Dave [Lee Roth] a call and ask him if he feels like whooping and hollering a little bit. I've got a ton of music.

Hustler: Will your wedding be a traditional wedding or a rock star bash?

Eddie Van Halen: It's a small wedding, with only family and a few close friends here at home in our backyard. It'll be nice. My brother is going to marry us. He can actually legally marry us. He's an ordained minister. Reverend Al. It's gonna be great.

Hustler: Who will be the best man?

Eddie Van Halen: My son Wolfgang, of course.

Hustler: It'll be a real family affair.

Eddie Van Halen: I have very few friends. Janie and I, we don't go out much, except to the market. She's a great cook, so why go out? I've never been the type to hang out much or do the hollywood thing and that kind of shit. That's why you don't see me in the tabloids very often. We enjoy our privacy.

Hustler: Do you still play every day?

Eddie Van Halen: I do now. After the tour, I was a couch potato for a good five months, but I'm back! I'm writing, I'm doing everything — including interviews. (Laughs.)

Hustler: What is the best part about being Eddie Van Halen in 2009 ?

Eddie Van Halen: I guess for the first time in my life I really feel good. I don't really wanna get into the whole sobriety trip. But I'm just workin' on a lot of things to get better at being here in the moment and stay clear, ya know? I have been drinking, smoking, and playing guitar since I was 12 years old. I still smoke, and I'm definitely playing guitar better than ever. I guess one of the three had to go. Along with some other shit. But alcohol was the wonder drug for me. It's a trip to look back and go, "Fuck, I've been doing this for over 40 years." I'm lucky to be alive. I'm healthier and happier than I've ever been.

Janie and I are getting married in June. She's a beautiful, sexy, sweet, strong and smart woman who loves me unconditionally. And of course vice versa. I mean the love part. I have the most insanely gifted, talented, wonderful son (a direct gift from God), whom I love more than he'll ever know. My brother Alex, who I just love so fucking much, it makes me wanna cry out of joy that I'm so blessed to have him since the day I was born. My best friend Matt, who I've known for over 20 years and works with me on just about everything I do. My friend Ryan and a few other people. A great career. And of course my own company, EVH brand of guitars, amps and accessories. What the fuck more could I ask for ? I feel like my life is just beginning. That's what the best part of being Eddie Van Halen is….in any year.

Jack Strong thinks that the reception for Ed's wedding should be a No Hold Bar-B-Que hosted by Diamond Dave.

he smartly held back all the enthusiasum of being sober, he was saying 10 yrs ago how it was great to be sober, clear headed, writing & playing sober for first time...and he fell. He might be able to create better now that he's more clear headed. THe major drinking wasn't working anymore for sure...no diss on Ed, but I don't see him reinventing rock guitar again. I'll be happy if he pushes the envelope on his own playing & writing, at 55. Other than Ben Franklin, who's creating & inventing their best stuff at 55 in history, music or other?....his solo live is eruption & Cathedral, as it has been since 1982.

In regards to the "tons of music", he's been saying that for 15 years now. It's all been crap, and a colossal dissapointment. His porno soundtrack was crap. Unless it sounds like Unchained or Mean Street, etc, fans aren't going to care.

This band is dead. Roth can't bring the goods to the table and the drunkard's keyboard obsession isn't going to sell records.

Stay on track, Ed, your real fans are still with you 100%

All you husbands out there KNOW he's not going to stay sober for long after he gets married! (And I say this as the husband of an awesome woman -- who still drives me to drink)

I just hope DLR stays healthy -- and "down" -- so we don't have to hear Eddie's wife singing on the next record and tour.

it can be negative on these postings, but you have to admit, EVH has sort of done some sh*tty things the last few years, to Dave, Sammy, Mike Anthony, even Cherone. Too much inactivity, sloppy drunken playing, years of saying "i'm clean, finally found the singer, no LSD" then back to the drawing board again. I wouldn't put myself into the snot nose young category, I saw them as far back as 1981. I understand they are much older, but that last tour wasn't even a shell of what it used to be. I don't think I'm negative, I think I'm being realistic. He's regurgitating old licks & solos....though the show had its good moments, the energy from the band just wsn't there, including from the young Wolf, how to me lacked stage presense....like most 16 olds probably do(other than Dave & Ed when they were 16, I don't think DLR was ever stage shy).

bootymilk says "Something about all this depresses me. I can't put my finger on it."
Id say it could be this...ed says before the ball will even get rolling on a new VH album, first Wolfgang has to graduate high school.Isnt he like 16? that means a couple of years before anything starts for a new cd.
In the meantime, dave, ed, or al could all fall over dead (these guys are getting kinda old and have lived pretty hardcore lifestyles..not in the best health), and aside from that theres a huge likelyhood of them kicking dave out again before sessions start or after they start (thats when they will start having disagreements over direction and shit)
On top of that, like motley crue and others before them, they didnt have the common sense to strike while the iron was hot.For Christ sake, if your a 30+ year old band and you reunite and get alot of publicity and sell alot of tickets, you need to get something out A.S.A.P. rather then waiting til the novelty of the reunion has blown over.
I love VH, theyre just making bad choices yet again I.M.O.

...Diver Down was my first VH album. I own them all, multiple copies of many (LP & CD). I loved both Van Halen and Van Hagar. I want to be excited about VH again, but I'm not. Mikey is so underrated, is hugely missed, and was hugely disrespected as he was tossed aside by the brothers. DLR is just a shell of his former self. (I just bought the new Sammy Hagar album and he still sings great at 60+ years old). Ed does interviews with magazines that the bass player of VH isn't old enough to buy. No one but former members show up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony. No new music. It's so dysfunctional that it is just hard to be a fan anymore. I'm not a kid whining, just an old fan being realistic that the best years of VH have long since past.

Left over from Van Halen III, not that "Without You" and "Fire In The Hole" weren't good but they weren't even close to the Dave and Sam days at all. And like other posters have said the way Wolfie performs at the shows is were this band really is, dead in the water.
