No More NIRVANA Music Coming Out, Says Bassist
- Mar. 11, 2009
|
|
|
According to The Pulse of Radio, former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic told DailyWorld.com in a new interview that fans should not expect to hear any music from the band emerging from the vaults. But while previously unreleased music may be scarce, Novoselic added, "What there is, is video. There's a lot of video. There's not going to be any new NIRVANA records." Novoselic was interviewed when he participated in an oral history for the Washington State Legacy Project, which is dedicated to profiling influential residents of the state who have helped shape its history.
Novoselic did not indicate what kind of video footage is in the band's archives, nor did he say whether it will ever see the light of day.
The last NIRVANA studio song released was "You Know You're Right", issued in 2002 as part of a boxed set. The track's release was held up for years by a legal battle that pitted Novoselic and NIRVANA drummer Dave Grohl against Courtney Love, widow of late NIRVANA frontman Kurt Cobain. The tune was recorded in January of 1994, three months before Cobain committed suicide.
Asked if he was now on good terms with Love, Novoselic said, "It's not bad terms."
NIRVANA was crucial in bringing mainstream attention to both the Seattle music scene and alternative music in general. Novoselic told The Pulse of Radio a while back why he thought the band took off so explosively. "Well, it was a phenomenon. I think a lot of it was timing as what was going on in the music business. And a lot of the Sunset Strip hair bands were past their prime and people were ready for something new. NIRVANA always tried to be sincere."
The bassist told DailyWorld.com that he wished he had done more to stop Cobain from killing himself, saying, "There's regrets. I was angry. It's just a waste . . . Kurt called me the first time he did heroin and he told me he did it. And I told him, 'Don't do it man. You're playing with dynamite.'"
Novoselic has continued a low-key music career since NIRVANA's demise, playing in EYES ADRIFT, SWEET 75 and punk act FLIPPER. He is also active in local Washington politics and has his own show on a community radio station.

'You Know You're Right' was heavy as hell! No, they weren't metal, but they were heavy. Play Nirvana and then play Dimmu Borgir or something and see if your grandmother can tell them apart, probably not, they'll both just sound like noise to her! All the labels and sub labels are so silly, it's all just heavy music, and Nirvana was heavy music....

just because it isn't metal doesn't mean people don't care about it. You can't call them a fad band because they did everything they could to seperate themselves from the ONLY commercially succesful song they put out 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' 'Bleach' was a metal influenced grunge album, 'Incesticide' was a punk oriented collection and 'In Utero' was a modern take on punk music. The band has remained artistically relevant for well over a decade and arguable more so than a majority of their counterparts in the 90s alternative scene. Hate 'em all you want, but for many of us this is where our appreciation for real musicians and 'true' music began.

I totally agree with you - calling Nirvana a fad band is horseshit there were bands making music like that in the early 80s in Chicago - Kurts influences were like Big Black and the Feederz - The fad came to them if anything - Just because the average fool on the street didn't know about it doesn't mean it wasn't happening. Nirvana had 10 times the song writing chops than your average "belllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh" Not to mention they took down hair metal which is a -ok by me -

Being a music fan for music's sake and not for fashion or what I think liking a certain band is going to make me look like, I can appreciate the impact Nirvana had on the music scene and the direction it took music. Trendy? Not even close. Maybe to those who only started checking them out once the rest of the world caught on, yeah, they may have become "trendy" simply because of the following they had created but in no way because of the music they were crafting. Being so popular was something Kurt hated, he even tried to turn alot of people off when writing In Utero. Not many bands would change their approach in the midst of such success and popularity. Trendy?? I think NOT. And to come out here and say that "Noboy Cares"is pretty damn foolish. Not everyone is so close minded and worried about being "Metal" enough, that shit just cracks me up. I am not saying they were teh best band ever but they were very infuential and their impact can not be denied, not rationaly anyway. Saying "they suck" isn't a rational argument, neither is "they were never metal".

Nirvana were great and they put the spotlight on other great bands like AIC, Soundgarden.
And they killed off "Winger" like bands. But they probably had a negative impact on the real metal world at the time - depends how you look at it. So many bands made big changes after Nirvana ... just look at Metallica.

Nirvana is actually a very underrated band. They're massively popular for the wrong reasons and many people (at least I know of) don't really understand what Kurt Cobain was truly all about. On the other hand, other people get turned off by the massive popularity and just wants to bash this band. Nirvana is truly a tragic band.
Kurt was fucking awesome coz he listened to Melvins, Earth, Sonic Youth, Shonen Knife, and a bunch of other bands that only real music lovers would appreciate.

Nirvana wasn't the best out of Seattle's "Big Four," but they were the uncontested most culturally relevant for the time period.
It's actually sadder to think that if Kurt hadn't died and Nirvana continued, nu-metal probably would've never existed.

I'm not entirely sure why Nirvana is considered influential? Not that many bands in the years that followed tried to mimick their sound? You had more people trying to copy pearl jam's sound off 'ten' than sounding like Nirvana. The Nirvana albums are decent hard rocking albums and I still like them, but I don't think they were nearly as influential as other bands from the same era.

Did you miss the word ALTERNATIVE? nope guess not. i think i"ll celebrate this 'news' by burning all of my flannel accented by pre-ripped jeans and chuck taylors completed by a stunning black blazer. i'll throw away my dippety-doo..no more spiky hair for me! i'll stop sulking for hours on end wondering why life is sooo hard. i may even trade in my frazier box set. do me a favor take pearl jam, smashing pumpkins, u2 and all other crying tripe with you. Nirvana is ok but very overrated, and yea they were very trendy, but thats always happens when a band gets huge, most of the people arent real fans and just buy the albums because its supposed to be cool or because of one song. even watched a show on VH1 some time ago and the people there thought Nevermind was the first album. but their albums werent that good, 3-5 good songs and the rest just poor punk songs. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Screaming Trees are and were much better bands, much better musicians. and also this happens every decade, some new younger bands take over in popularity, that doesnt mean they are better, but the real good bands of each decade always keep on making good music and playing big concerts, even though they sell less of their albums. and the newspapers always like whats new and shiny.

Alice In Chains were in fact the first 'grunge' band from Seattle to be signed to a major label with Facelift... Nirvana may have been the more popular in the end, but to say they shone the light on the scene is revisionist history.
Nirvana were massively over-rated but that's because they watered down for Nevermind to get the pay day.

good stuff, I had a laugh. Makingfunofyou, making sense as well. I think the whole Nirvana mania gets annoying cuz the media, Rolling STone magazine etc, keep hailing them as the greatest ever, top 5 album of all time, most important band after the Beatles, that is over hype, but they were solid & it was back to rock music, instead of powerballads, puddlehair, white leather, posers. It killed it, which was a blessing. How did Jon Bon Jovi survive though? Why isn't he in the same boat with Warrant, White Lion etc...those bands 20 year retro faze is nearly up too. Soon, it'll be 20 years since grunge, and Bret Michaels will go away forever.

no that wasnt completely leftfield, that was what people in the 90's wanted songs about depression and shit like that, but liked it also but i also like Motley Crue, Skid Row and Guns N'Roses very much, but liked the other Seattle bands and STP and Smashing Pumpkins more then Nirvana because they were just better musicians and played more complex music but thats just me and lots other people too. but the same happened in the 80's, bands like Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and more were suddenly out of favour, it always happens but when these bands get over the 30's crisis they usually come back and keep making good music and play in front of big crowds.
but why read magazine like Rolling Stones??? it isnt about music, its just about what supposed to be cool at any given time and looks. Magazine like Classic Rock are far better, its about the music new and old and about whos good, no matter how old they are or how they look.

agree about Rolling stone, just an example. Every magazine, music show hails Nirvana as the end all. I like them, don't get me wrong. I like alot of their peers even more, Alice, STP. I don't even think they were the first to bring it back to basics, I think GnR got that ball rolling, musically & style wise...it does drive me nuts to hear people say "they couldn't play"...its not about shredding, on any level. yes, Nirvana was primative, but they had a hell of alot more kick than White Lion or Poison, bubblegum music with loud guitars. Add Bon Jovi to the top of that heap of shit. (again, how does he get a pass?)....and I like some of Crue, a few others songs, but as a whole, that whole scene was so dead, Europe, Trixter etc...its happening again right now, Puddle of Mudd, Nickleback(the face of this crap music)...there needs to be change!!

yea usually the first bands are great then there are the imitators, but usually it ends with them selling more then the bands that start something just because the band thats band start are usually better but maybe little to complex for the mainstream or people whi just listen to what the radio tells them, and they usualy also do things their way. especialy in the 80's and 90's and today. Alice in Chains sold alot but bands like Creed sold even more. but the sales specialy today seem to have very little with how good you are. hehe yea i agree Nirvana could play but they were far from geniuses but sometimes thats ok. you can like Tool, Dream Theater, King Crimson, but you can also like Nirvana and Motley Crue, but of course bands like Dream Theater, Tool and King Crimson are much better but you have to give them time and realy listen to them and then you get much more reward and sometimes hearing something new in the music even after listening to them many times over. but with bands like Nirvan you just get it straight away or not.
its like the singer from Mars Volta said, you can go to a mcdonalds or you can go to a fancy restaurant and get 5 course meal or something like, both good, just depents on the mood

there's room for the straight up bashing rock, & the more "prog" rock, modern or classic. If its good its good, but even the more complex rock, I usually gravitate the bands that have decent songs to showcase their talents...and in Nirvana's primative case, they had great hooks without being cheesy, like Bon Jovi....good point re: Creed as well. It gets more & more watered down from the original, & those bands sell huge, they dumb it up for the masses....look at GodSmack, they were a Alice Tribute band to start.

yea thats right and sometimes you can get a little angry because of it. i sometimes get angry because of Nirvana and Metallica, i think they both are good but i just think many similar bands and from the same time are better but didnt sell nearly as much. but its also sometimes about marketing and stuff like that, and many bands didnt get big just because they were from the wrong city or wrong place at the wrong time, and sometimes just because of some problems in their recording company and so on. and i hate it also when some of these people buy albums because of one song and say the band is very good and then just play this one song and thats it. but thats just what you have to live with when you have music as a big hobby, and music is everywhere and everyone seems to have an opinion on it, thats why i have tried the last few year when i get together with these kind of people to just let it go and let them play their bon jovi or similar stuff. and thats also why i enjoy it much more when i meet with the other friends that are much into music and we get some beer and watch live dvd's or something like that.
