JERRY CANTRELL 'Really Proud' Of New ALICE IN CHAINS Album - May 19, 2009
The Pulse of Radio reports: ALICE IN CHAINS recently finished work on its first studio album in 14 years, although the band did not preview any of the new material this past weekend at the Rock On The Range festival in Columbus, Ohio, where they played live for the first time since late last year. Even though it once seemed like the world would never see a new ALICE IN CHAINS record, guitarist Jerry Cantrell told The Pulse of Radio that he's pleased with what the group has accomplished this time. "We're really proud of it," he said. "I'm really proud of all of us, man, that we decided to take this trip and decided to take the chance, you know what I mean, to continue and to move forward. The record's a win. Regardless of how it does, it's a win already for us, 'cause we really dig it and we stand behind it, and each other."

The yet-to-be-titled disc will be out in mid-September via Virgin Records, a division of EMI Music, and is the first full-length ALICE IN CHAINS studio effort since a self-titled 1995 album.

The new disc marks the recording debut of vocalist William DuVall. Original singer Layne Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002.

Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez regrouped in 2005 for a charity show before embarking on several tours in 2006 and 2007 with DuVall on the mic.

A preview in the Los Angeles Times called the new album "recognizably thundering and gloomy," with an acoustic track called "Your Decision" followed by what the reporter described as "a seven-minute epic built on heavy slabs of guitar, drums and bass, something like BLACK SABBATH but far quicker."

When asked about stepping into the shoes of Staley, DuVall told the Times, "It's a big thing. I've joined a group that has a strong identity and a strong legacy. Nobody's sitting here who wants to, in any way, disrespect or sully that legacy. You want to add to it."

All of ALICE IN CHAINS' previous albums and EPs were on Columbia Records.

ALICE IN CHAINS will support KID ROCK at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, July 18. Also scheduled to appear is CYPRESS HILL. Tickets are on sale via Tickets.com and at the Comerica Park box office.

Duvall is good, but there is no way he will be able to compare to Stayley when he was in his prime.

Bring it on.
Layne was the voice ...Jerry was the music.
Layne put his stamp on things in the past and I really hope Duvall can do the same in future.
There is no question he will have an uphill battle but I think the overwhelming demand for new AIC will eclipse this and he will ultimately at least be given the opportunioty to prove himself.
The music will no doubt sound like AIC I mean , Layne wrote lyrics he didnt write the music. Morevoer, most of the vocal harmonies and melodies as well as the music were written by Cantrell anyway. So the trademark AIC vibe will be intact!
Dont get me wrong I am not taking anything away from Layne because he has one of the best and most recognizeable voices in rock...but the music is the backdrop and Cantrell is the force behind it. Cantrell is smart and I am sure this release will surprise a lot of people in a good way.
I dont think they are trying to be the AIC of old but trying to at least stay current, creative, relevant and put out some quality tunes for fans that like this type of music.

Tough to call but I am def pulling for them and I really hope the new stuff stays true to the work from the past but also leaves enough room for growth in the future.

but i think that if they had to resurrect AIC as a 'tribute' to Layne they really should have done it as a 3-piece. Why a 'new' lead singer, Jerry can handle vocals if the 3 of them want to move on, sure it won't sound as good but I don't know, something about adding another person is too much like 'replacing' Layne, and thats where it just starts to feel like a cash grab to me. So I wish they'd have just done this as Jerry, Sean and Mike.

As far as dissing Layne for drugs, disrespectul dude! Not to mention that the other guys were hardly saints, they obviously never let themselves get to Layne's level, but the other 3 weren't exactly straightedge!

That said, i'll give this a fair chance, but I wish they'd of let it rest or just gone out as the three of them, but who am I to say....

What a stupid sentance!, did you even ever like Alice in Chains?

I for one thing Jerry Cantrell has a lot to answer for regarding his treatment of Layne.

Im just glad im stuck in the past and the future doesnt hold any new AiC's music in it narrow minded as I am

Oh generic evil username 666 he did go solo but peaked at supporting Nickleback!! still Kid Rock is a step in the right direction

Obviously Staley was an important part of the band, but personally, I thought they pretty much sucked after they changed their bassist. I'm still optimistic about this album, because I really liked Cantrell's solo albums, but the truth is that the only reason anyone cares about this band are because of Facelift and Dirt, both made with Mike Starr. Was it coincidence or chemistry that their material became substantially weaker after he left? Whichever it is, they were well on their way to pissing away their legacy when Staley died. And if we get another great album from Cantrell, it doesn't matter who else is on it.

I'm getting really sick of reading all of the negativity surrounding AIC and what they're up to nowadays.
First off, I saw them when they toured with Velvet Revolver, William DuVall was singing for them and he did a great job, he's not up there trying to imitate Layne, he's got a great voice, and yes at times he does sound reminiscent of Layne, but is that such a bad thing? Everyone seems to have all the praise in the world for Layne now that he's gone, but where were you when he was still with us? And it's really easy to nitpick and cry foul when you're hiding behind your monitor, typing away as if your opinion matters, but the fact of the matter is, Wiliam is the new lead vocalist, he's got a great voice, and he's up there trying to help start a new chapter in the career of AIC, and hopefully, this new batch of material is gonna make alot of people shut the fuck up! I wish these guys all the best.
Secondly, as far as them opening for Kid Rock, its only one show and maybe, just maybe, the guys in Alice get along with Kid Rock and are doing the show because they want to get out there and play some of their new material, rock the shit out of the classics that all of the AIC fans know and love and thought we'd never have the opportunity to hear/see again, and have a great fucking time doing it! Doesn't sound like such a bad thing, does it? And how hard is it, to leave after you see Alice if you "hate" the rest of the performers so much? People need to relax and and enjoy music for what it is, entertainment and a release from the bullshit that comes with everyday life. It's not politics, and most of the people who feel the need to comment and analyze and put down everything that they see fit while hiding behind a computer screen in anonymity, should stop for a minute and realize that they really have no insight into what's really going on behind the scenes, and as I said earlier; Get The Fuck Over It!!!

Saw them back in the day with Layne on Lolla '94. It was a great performance. Layne was very intense and was tight with the rest of the guys.

All the songs were back to back with largely no talking from Layne. He had a whtie t-shirt, blue jeans and jet black sunglasses (couldn't forget many details as I was really excited to see them). Jerry had hair down to his knees practically back then.

Layne did not appear fucked up and played guitar on one song (perhaps Rain When I Die). They played the better songs from their first two studio albums.

RATM, Tool, and Primus played that day as well.

This Kravitz dude isn't selling me with that video.
I know there can be no other Layne...but so far I'm in the "No Layne, NO AIC" camp.

Seriously, they could have just made a band like Velvet Revolver or Audioslave...a band that is "mostly this band and this singer" and it would have sold fine, because people have wanted to hear them make new music for ages.

Calling this AIC sounds like a cash-in to me, though.

What's the point comparing the new guy to Layne? It's obvious there is never going to be another Layne. If the new guy is good (and I think he is), then just enjoy the music for what it is.

don't know when that one dude saw him but I saw them 3-4x on the 'Facelift' and 'Dirt' tours and he was fantastic every time, no complaints from me. We'll see how the new stuff sounds, but i'm sticking to my original gut instinct: if they wanna do it, do it as a 3 piece with jerry on vox and guitars...

Saw Alice in Chain this past weekend; was absolutely great. Musically and vocally it was spot on. Life is too damn short to argue about this band continuing on. This band is a legend and it was pure joy to hear this music live again.

They blew away most of the generic rock that I saw at Rock on the Range.

First day album buyer and will be back to see them live.

i haven't had the nerve to listen to this Duvall guy until now. He does sound like Layne at times on "Man in the Box". I don't know his past and no reason to disrespect the man. That being said this should be a new project as someone else stated. It truly is a tough call, I understand, 'cuz on the flip side there is AC/DC & Johnson kept that ball rollin'. I don't know, there are some legacies you just don't mess with. Honestly, would anyone like to see (not that'd it happen), Vinnie, Rex, and Phil with a different guitarist perform and record new material as Pantera??? Layne was a soul that burned out too fast. I was a fan from the beginning and was elated when "tripod" was released. Really thought Layne cleaned up his addiction and was looking forward to maybe another Mad Season, in addition to AiC.
Again, no disrespect to Duvall.

Also, enough already with the f'n arguement about them continuing. They are, and if you don't like it..... don't listen. I am more than confident that by you not listening, no one cares. Many bands have continued on....... pushed forward. It all works itself out in the end.

could have been the choice for singer if AIC wanted to sound EXACTLY like they did with Layne, but obviously they didn't.

AC/DC didn't want to sound exactly like Bon after he passed away, which is why they didn't hire someone like Marc Storace from Krokus, or Georg from Rhino Bucket for that matter

If you're gonna get a new singer, best not to get someone who is a soundalike, then it really does seem like one would be trying to reclaim the past...ie.cash grab

Let's all just sit and what to see how this turns out!
