ANNIHILATOR Mainman Says His Band Split With SPV Before Bankruptcy Filing - May 28, 2009
Jeff Waters of Canadian metallers ANNIHILATOR has commented on the report that the band's record label, the Hanover, Germany-based SPV, has submitted an application to commence insolvency proceedings on May 25 — roughly equivalent to Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. He states, "I wish them [SPV] all the best and they have given us metal fans some great releases for a long time.

"The good news is that I signed a deal with SPV, only a few weeks ago, releasing ANNIHILATOR from their contractual commitments to SPV, in return for a live DVD that we shot last summer in the Czech Republic.

"SPV will be releasing the DVD soon (and it rocks; co-headlining in front of 30,000 metal maniacs!) but ANNIHILATOR are now free from the label and negotiating with others to release the new and finished 13th studio release."

ANNIHILATOR was honored in the "Favorite Metal Artist/Group" category at the 2009 Indie Awards (Independent Music Awards), which was held on March 14 at the Royal York Hotel (Canadian Room) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Also nominated in the "Metal" category were BISON B.C., CRYPTOPSY, CURSED and FUCK THE FACTS.

The Indies celebrate the best in independent music. Nominees are selected by committees of industry professionals from all areas of the music scene and winners are decided by a combination of public and industry voting.

ANNIHILATOR released its latest album, "Metal", in North America in January 2008 via SPV. The CD's ten new tracks were recorded by Jeff Waters (guitar, bass and lead vocals on one song), drum legend Mike Mangini and Dave Padden (longtime vocalist and touring guitarist/vocalist). The album features sensational performances by some of metal's finest players and ANNIHILATOR's good friends, like Alexi Laiho (CHILDREN OF BODOM), Danko Jones, Michael Amott and Angela Gossow (ARCH ENEMY), Corey Beaulieu (TRIVIUM), William Adler (LAMB OF GOD), Jeff Loomis, Jesper Strömblad (IN FLAMES), Steve "Lips" Kudlow, Anders Björler (THE HAUNTED), Jacob Lynam (LYNAM) and more.

Go figure. Not only is Waters a genius on guitar and songwriting, he is a good business man to have survived all this time being true to what he does. Now maybe finally a good USA label here can get this band where they deserve to be here, big and respected like elsewhere

I bet the new cd will dominate all. The singer is like the longest running singer in that band for 4 records now i think. When i read all the comments on here about some not liking his voice, i checked him out and he is actually the best one they have had. Finally a real singer and the guy plays a mean axe.

at least here. Only real metaheads know this band in the States. Europe and Asia have known them since 89. So kudos to Waters and Co. for NOT following the money and for just making great metal music. This band deserves everything it has and will get. BEST GUITAR PLAYER IN METAL, thanks.

Grabbing from a previous post, these bands are now in BIG trouble I think:

Whitesnake, Alice Cooper, Motörhead, Kreator, Sepultura, Saxon, UFO, Magnum, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Iced Earth, Dio, Axel Rudi Pell, Sodom, Molly Hatchet, Manowar, Monster Magnet...

Well you deserve it bro. No one has pounded the pavement with metal like Waters and consistently delivered. Some bands have their hey day and some deliver one or two, these guys deliver the goods consistently and without the f.....g trend jumping we see every day.

If you want to hear Dave Padden sing, listen to 2005's Schizo Deluxe. Try to find a better vocalist than on that cd. SMOKIN!

Ya, I just read that. Lucky Waters on that one,. He deserves it and I think he is a really good business man,. I am sure that his moves were calculated and that he is one of the few that got out alive with this one. Can't wait to hear their new cd. 13 studio cds now. WOW! Bravo metal dudes. REAL metal band,

The most brilliant band to come out of Canada in metal.
The most brilliant metal guitar player who can write, play exceptional solos and play seriously godly riffs.
The most honest band out there.

This is the most overlooked band in metal. Every album is filled with massive riffs and great songs. It would be nice to get a chance to see them in the U.S.

Well said. i hope some label grabs them soon and makes the cd a hit here. They could be huge with only a moderate push i bet. The band is still pretty young in their 30s for a band that has been putting cds out since 1989 and new metal fans here would eat this shit up

For those of you saying that other bands (who still have a contract with SPV) are in a lot of trouble now: Don't kid yourself about Annihilator's situation, they will have a difficult time getting a new and attractive deal with another label. Other labels are having just as much of a hard time as SPV, and they will not be keen on signing an old-school band like Annihilator that hasn't had much success for years (and has never been really big in any case).

To those of you who think that Annihilator will sign a huge record deal now and become really big: I advice you to watch the recent "Anvil! This Is Anvil" documentary. What happens to Anvil in that film may just as well happen to their fellow Canadians of Annihilator now.

But HUGE difference between Annihilator and Anvil. Annihlator have consistently put out good metal cds since 1989. at least 11 or 12 studio cds and have been always around doing well in many countries in the world. Anvil, on the other hand, put out 3 great cds in the beginning of their careers back in 1980 or so, and then went into a more than 20 year rut where they wrote about pot, hockey and really stupid material. BIG difference between those two bands.

This band deserves more success with a REAL BIG label. As people say, they have consistently put out awesome albums throughout all their career and Waters is the epitome of the REAL metal player and businessman, respected by everyone in the scene. They have stayed true to their roots and never sold out, and for this they will ALWAYS have my utmost respect, a band I will always follow until their final days. And, of course, I cannot wait to have their 13th album in my hands, because ALL (and I said ALL) of their albums slay.
