DEATH ANGEL Drummer Quits; Temporary Replacement Announced - May 28, 2009
San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL have issued the following statement:

"As some of you may have already heard, DEATH ANGEL's longtime drummer and original member Andrew Galeon [pictured below] has decided that it is time for him to move on from the band. While we are sad to see him go, we wish him nothing but success. Not only has he been an integral part of DEATH ANGEL from day one, but he's also family and a friend and we will miss him. All the best to you, brother.

"As for the future of DEATH ANGEL, THE SHOW GOES ON. Old friend and longtime fixture of the Bay Area metal scene, Will Carroll (SCARECROW, OLD GRANDAD, VICIOUS RUMORS, etc.), will be handling the drum duties for the upcoming local shows in June and the Summer Madness Tour in Europe with KATAKLYSM and KEEP OF KALESSIN. Will's been jamming with us for over a month now and is tearing it up! We look forward to hitting the stage with him very soon… We'll be performing songs from 'Frolic' and 'Act III' that we haven’t played live since back in the day so prepare for a dose of some serious old-school thrash!

"Thank you all for your continued support over the years… See you on the road this summer!"

Five years after the release of the band's acclaimed comeback album, "The Art Of Dying", and the follow-up effort, "Killing Season", influential Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL have just issued a DVD with two full-length concerts filmed in Germany. Entitled "Sonic German Beatdown", the package — which came out on April 17 — includes footage from the 2007 edition of the Rock Hard Festival and a 2008 performance in Adelsheim. As an added bonus, the set includes a live CD.

Wow, I think he's the third original member to quit in the last 8 months. Death Angel is still a great band. I've been following them since The Ultra Violence record. I really like what they have come up with on their last couple of cd's. Good Luck.

Methinks this spells the end of DA... again. Too bad, because Killing Season was a pretty good record and Mark Osegueda has become an awesome singer/frontman. I thought they had a few more in them.

Correction - 2nd member to leave in recent months. 3rd original member to leave overall.

are there, Death Angel's sound and songwriting should be good, but I'd still put Andy Galeon close behind on that list. This sucks! Awesome player, and his backup vocals are a big part of that sound.

Check Galeon out on this Organization vid for "Free Burning" -- he's like a one man freakin' band. Sorry to see him go:

They were overrated when they came out and still are overrated.
Decent for their age when they came out but they were never the next Slayer or Metallica.

A big loss for sure. But Cavestany is the lifeblood of the band. With Marc on vocals it's still Death Angel, and it'll still rock.

i dont feel their replacement is as good as andy. hopefully will be proved wrong. andy is one of the most under rated metal drummers out there. as good as bostaph and hunting...

But then again look at how many line-up changes Exodus and Testament have had over the years and they still thrash.
It just seems more of a big deal with Death Angel because they're related.
Maybe they should make a point to only replace members with fellow relatives. IDK.
As long as they're still turning out quality music they should keep it going.

I do not find a North American release of this live DVD. Only the live CD seems to be available.
On the departure of Andy, it is a shame. What a great drummer live...so full of energy. I spoke to him on last summer's tour and he was a great guy. I hope the carry on.

And to whoever compared them to Metallica, at least DA have 5 good albums out of 5, even if I do not like act III, I think its still a good album. I like Metallica just as much, but I could have gone without anything that came out between 1991-2002. And yes, I do like St-Anger. Death Magnetic is a great follow-up to AJFA, even if the sound is crap.

And at least DA have no Lars.

saw DA back in 1990 with forbidden and testament. One of the best shows i've ever seen. these guys had just released act III and they were tighter than a nun on sunday. too bad the spark is gone for these guys. remaining members should just drop the whole DA name and start over, cause its not DA without the rest of the members who made it a "success"

Down to one original member. Can Will even get VISA/Immagration papers to go to Europe? I hope he stays "healthy" long enough to pull this off, remember he was in the same position with Machine Head a decade ago and we all know how well that went.

What the hell - Testament aren`t thrash??? Of course they are, The Legacy and The New Order are classic thrash albums.

Shame about this news but as said, most thrash bands have gone through numerous line up changes...Exodus and Megadeth spring to mind...and are currently releasing great material.

What am I missing? Rob Cavestany (guitars) and Mark Osegueda (vocals) are still there. They're both originals, and the primary presence and songwriters of DA.

Mark is not an original member. DA started without him. Andy and Rob are the main song writers. Andy, unfortunately, never gets credit in Mark and Rob's interviews. DA won't sound the same. Any replacement will sound karaoke!

To say Mark is not an original member, is like saying Chuck Billy is not an original member of Testament( Legacy). Or Bon Scott is not an original member of AC/DC. He is in the line up that got signed., and on the demo that got them signed, and appeared on, and contributed to every album they have ever put out. But granted he wasn't on The Heavy Metal Insanity demo. But! As with many bands the first few line- ups weren't the ones that got the bands label interest. It was when the fit was right! and in 84 when Mark joined the band the fit was right! They are all great musicians, and I will miss Andy's playing. But! I'm sure when they settle on a permanent fixture behind the kit. It will be the right fit! And not sound karaoke! Rob, and Mark wouldn't carry on if that was the case. I look forward to hearing what they can, and will create in the years to come. All the best to all D.A. member's past, and present! Thrash needs Death Angel!
