MEGADETH: New Album Title Revealed - June 18, 2009
MEGADETH has set "Endgame" as the title of its twelfth studio album, tentatively due in September through Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at the band's brand new, self-built studio in San Marcos, California — Vic's Garage — which was named after the legendary and iconic Vic Rattlehead character.

"Endgame" is being helmed by MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine and acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (EXODUS, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD). Sneap also manned the boards for 2007's "United Abominations". Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Headcrusher", "1,320", "How the Story Ends" and "This Day We Fight!"

According to a press release, "Endgame" "boasts the technicality, ferocity and snarl that's synonymous with MEGADETH and Mustaine. It's a violent masterwork that represents Mustaine's best work in nearly two decades. In a musical world dominated by bands that make generic, blanket statements, 'Endgame' finds Mustaine, once again, making informed and substantial lyrical declarations about the state of the world we live in."

Commented Mustaine: "Thematically, I've never been known to be a silent bystander in a world that needs our participation. As more is revealed about our former President's legacy, a little-known yet staggeringly frightening document which was signed into law, named 'Endgame', has been uncovered. The album 'Endgame' is the most energetic music offering I have penned in over a decade and is far more believable than knowing someone signed 'Endgame' — the document — into law. The album is also the perfect 'ass-kicking' music to listen to once you are done reading the aforementioned document!"

In short, it's the MEGADETH record that fans of classics like "So Far…So Good…So What?" and "Rust in Peace" have been chomping at the bit for.

"This new album is my proudest moment since the famous (or infamous) 'Rust in Peace' album," Mustaine added. "With this album, I am also very excited to be introducing my new lead guitarist, Chris Broderick, to the world. I have always felt lucky to have had top shredders in that position, but after touring with Chris in support of my last album, I couldn't wait to get into the studio and see what he could do."

A six-minute video featuring Andy Sneap describing the process of mixing MEGADETH's new track "Headcrusher" at his studio in Derbyshire, U.K. can be viewed below. The clip, which was previously only available to members of MEGADETH's official fan club, MegaFanClub, features around 30-second snippet of the actual "Headcrusher" track which will appear on MEGADETH's forthcoming album.

Said Sneap: "It's certainly old-school MEGADETH — that's what I like."

Mustaine recently stated about the band's new CD, "It is fast, it is heavy, there is singing, yelling, speaking, and guest voices (maybe not singing — more like in 'Captive Honor'), the soloing is insane." He added, "We have some great song concepts, like 'Nothing Left To Lose' is a song about having been wiped out, like so many Americans, from the recession and potential depression years of 2000, or 'Bite The Hand That Feeds', which is a song about the greed of the fiduciary leaders of the financial world and how they just didn't care about the responsibility they had to the public. There are also songs like '1320', a song about nitro fuel funny cars (something I enjoy), 'How The Story Ends' and 'This Day We Fight', both inspired by warrior creed from the great Sun Tzu with the use of drums and flags in ancient war, and an impassioned plea from Aragorn to his loyal fighters in 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, respectively. I also have some bizarre songs, like 'Headcrusher', which is about the medieval torture device, and 'Endgame', which is about a bill that ex-President George W. Bush signed into law that gave him the power to put American citizens in concentration camps that are actually called 'detention centers' here in the United States, and a favorite lyric of mine on this record about the North Hollywood bank robbery of 1997 (or 1998)."

This press releases more or less reckons that most of the recent Megadeth albums are crap and didn't satisfy the early fans...

"In short, it's the MEGADETH record that fans of classics like "So Far…So Good…So What?" and "Rust in Peace" have been chomping at the bit for."

Mustaine even adds to it:

"The album 'Endgame' is the most energetic music offering I have penned in over a decade".

So let's face it, the last few albums were not that energic, right?

Roadrunner should revise their publicity department or have a meeting with the people putting those press releases together.

HAHAHA

As long as Mustaine keeps his dumb-ass political opinions to himself, this might be good. I can't even listen to the moronic United Abominations.

But of course they said similar things about the last album. I have faith though.

I see he's referring to political matters again, but it's always surprised me that he's not more politically active – sometimes he states musicians should stay out of it, other times his view seems very different.

I disagree with the Eagle's above post. The World Needs A Hero, The System has Failed and United Abominations are all strong albums, much better than stuff like Cryptic Writings and Risk, aka Megadeth's failed sellout years. Compare the last three Megadeth albums to anything Metallica has done since Justice and listen to the superior quality of songwriting and musicianship from Mustaine and Co. I would also like to add that I appreciate the title of the new Megadeth album Endgame because it draws allusions to the Alex Jones documentary of the same name.

The press release is pretty funny:

"'Endgame' finds Mustaine, once again, making informed and substantial lyrical declarations about the state of the world we live in."

Aren't there songs about Lord of the Rings, and funny race cars?

Anyway, I hope the hype is true. I'm a big Megadeth fan, and like MOST of their albums, but UA did nothing for me, TSHF had a pretty good first half (the second half not so much), and obviously TWNAH and Risk were pretty bad. Hell, I even liked Cryptic Writings.

Here's hoping he can recover some of that fire. I don't need another RIP. I just want a great Megadeth record. Period.

And here in plain and bold text are the main reasons why I still cannot legitimately like Dave Mustaine as a person let alone a highly praised musician. All of his quotes are “I” and “MY”, not “WE” or “OUR”. It is a band effort, David, give the band their due. You didn’t even write all of the music. Most of it, and with ultimate veto power, sure, but it’s a collaborative effort. You may as well subtitle your band as Dave Mustaine’s Band…you could shorten it to DMB…oh, but that’s already taken by Dave Matthews Band (btw, the ‘leader’ of that band acknowledges that he does in fact have a band with him and uses key words like “we” and “our”).

Your ego (among a few other things) got you unceremoniously kicked out of Metallica, has made you lose countless great bandmates, and is EXACTLY why (among, again, other reasons) you will ALWAYS fail behind Metallica. The best you will ever be able to achieve is 2nd to Metallica (and actually, MANY other bands). There’s no wonder you always manage to make your bandmates resent you, because you fucking belittle them and downplay their accomplishments, contributions and talent. Great way to run/ruin a fucking band, fucktard.

It doesn't bother me as much, but I agree with your assessment of his personal pronouns. He may have written a large amount of the music, and does have "veto" power, as you put it, but I think you're correct in that the band does contribute to the recording process. The drummer is probably the most independent of Dave's song writing in that Dave can't play drums (at least not that well I'm sure), but regardless, everyone else still plays their own instruments.

The World Needs a Hero: mostly poor and boring.

The System has failed: first half is great, rest is okay

United Abominations: has its moments, so embarassing lyrics I can't stand to listen to it.

I don't get why people don't like Cryptic - surely Trust, Almost Honest and I'll get even are not exactly metal, but good songs while FFF, the disintegrators and she-wolf makes The World needs a Hero look like a bad joke with its am I evil ripoff and all those half-ass songs.

“You even write like a prissy little art critic! I don’t analyze everything, but I try to put a little thought into a subject (thanks for noticing, btw). I wrote with the same passion you did, hypocrite.

Can’t say I’ve met Dave in person, though I’ve met Marty Friedman. But neither have you, so you have even less of a reason to swing from his hairy nutsack to defend him like a damsel distress, son.

I’m not being the antithesis for no reason and I’m far from a miserable person. I’m a 20-year underground music vet who has a strong appreciation for bandmates. Dave Mustaine does not, so that by default makes us the antithesis of each other.

Or I could be wrong. As with 'Endgame'...this so called document signed into law by Bush (according to who Dave?....some unreliable, dishonest source?)....with UA (you were right...the UN is indeed, irrelevant)....I even wrote a paper on them in college. Plus I'll take The worst Megadeth album, Risk, and put it up against Load, Reload or St. Anger and it's still better. Dave is a much better Lead Guitarist than Kirk, and Any single Megadeth drummer will make Lars look like a crippled child behind the kit. So who's failing again? Risk has some decents songs, but it should not have been a labelled a Megadeth album. TWNH is beyond bad. System was a decent comeback but too little too late. I've never heard United Abominations but I can safely assume it's exactly as described.

Megadeth used to put out one good album after the other, from RIP onwards I used to wait for each new album and I knew they were gonna be killer albums, until Risk, which doesn't sound like Megadeth at all...

It's not about being an old-school thrash metal album or a more mainstream sounding metal album, it's about the quality of the of the material. CW for instance is a fuckin' great album.

WNAH is a decent effort, the problem with the album is that it was a step back, they moved too further in a wrong direction with Risk and when they returned to the old sound they were kind of lost, I don't think they knew what they really wanted to play at the time. The album sounds a bit generic, it would be a great album if it was out in the early-mid 90s, but at the time it was released it couldn't have any impact. Still it's a decent album.

SHF has some really good tracks, some awesome thrashy stuff and some consistent metal and mainstream metal songs, but the band credibility was at the stake with all the line-up changes and the calls to quit.

Then we have UA, it was a good because Megadeth was back, but it still doesn't sound organic or inspired. Maybe it was because Mustaine hasn't found a team yet, it wasn't a band, he was still playing with hired guys. The album just doesn't sound right, the quality of the music is much lower than what you would expect from a band like Megadeth.

To me a huge problem was the way UA was announced, it was like "Megadeth is back and better than ever, this new record is gonna be the best since RIP! Mustaine is so proud, the new band feels so much like a real band again, blablabla" so untrue... after a while the guitarrist quits and now that there's a new album coming they don't hesitate to put the album together with its predecessors as one of the not so good albums instead. This is not good for the band's credibility, this is bullshit.

Let's hope they're not doing the same mistake again with this new album, hope it's really good, hope it's gonna have songs that will become classical Megadeth songs that the audiences will be expecting them to play in their gigs for the next 10 years like Holy Wars, Symphony, Tornado... Otherwise I'll really lose my faith on Megadeth.

Headcrusher sounds so much like UA, I'm worried...

aka..."Operation Endgame" according to Wikipedia.org..was enforced by US Homeland Security for 2003-2012 to detain and remove all removeable aliens currently living in the United States by 2012. And ICE enforces it. So, this sounds to me that it was designed to crack down on illegal aliens living here...potential terrorists...or not. After 911, this is understandable. I hope Mustaine doesn't flip this and just flat out criticize Bush for protecting Americans. Talking about it fine...but it'll be hypocritical for him (since he supported Bush) if the song is a bashfest...which I doubt. Endgame is a cool title, and it better be worth the hype!!! oh yeah, and Death Magnetic was good but the next Tallica would even be more interesting.

“Peace Sells…” came AFTER both “Ride the Lightning” and “Master of Puppets”, and if anything, Ride & Peace are equal, while Master blows Peace and So Far, So Good, So What out of the water.

Dave & Kirk are probably close to equal these days in the lead department than many seem to notice. Seriously, critically analyze any lead played by Dave the past several albums (hell, even many of the older one weren’t ALL THAT) and you’ll see that just like Kirk, Dave has some of his own trappings that we falls into over and over. He doesn’t really play with a great deal of emotion in his lead work. His best leads are, not surprisingly, on his most succe$$ful albums, Rust & Countdown. There is a reason that he has always tried to employed lead guitarists who are far better than him. The only one who really didn’t get the job done may have been Jeff Young, but he only had one album, that was cursed by the worst production and in the middle of probably the unhealthiest time (86-89) of Megadeth’s history.

Dave’s always been touted as this great rhythm guitarist, and that very well was the case back in the day, although he was always, again, behind Hetfield, in my and many other musician’s opinion. Nowadays, Dave’s riffs are pretty inconsistent, sometimes bland or outright boring. I’m still a fan, critical yes, because a true music fan should be a somewhat critical one (otherwise they’re blind sheep). But when I think of the most influential riff makers these days, at least for me as a guitarist, guys like Hetfield, Dimebag Darrell, Chuck Schuldiner, Eric Peterson, Willie Adler & Mark Morton all spring to mind before Dave Mustaine for me.

As for leads…well, I won’t beat that dead horse but will say that even Hetfield, who does less than 1 solo per album, has a better percentage of good leads than Mustaine. Reference: Master of Puppets, Orion, To Live is to Die, Nothing Else Matters.

For you non-musicians, here’s a little secret: you make every note you play count. The less throwaway, unnecessary notes the better.

Your homework: find 10 Dave Mustaines solos that you deem as the most memorable. Not the most catchy, because that’s only in the moment. Find the ones that are most memorable, the ones that stick in your head the longest after you’ve heard them. The ones that you could verbally sing each note or easily learn to play yourself because it’s that damned memorable. You have until Saturday afternoon. I’ll check back to grade your assignment. I’m not spewing venom. So you (claim to) have met him. You’ve supposedly seen the man behind the curtain, as they say. And you claim to now ‘know’ this man upon your transient little encounters and now you somehow magically know the true essence of the man. Good for you.

But…none of that means a damn thing when his public persona totally contradicts what you supposedly know and have witnessed. Again, re-read the press release and the man’s quotes. It’s not even in the fucking subtext, it’s all right there in plain text and gets to the point of my original post.

Just a few examples:

“The album 'Endgame' is the most energetic music offering I have penned in over a decade…”

"This new album is MY proudest moment since the famous (or infamous) 'Rust in Peace' album,"

“I am also very excited to be introducing MY new lead guitarist, Chris Broderick, to the world.”

“…in support of MY last album…”

I think I saw “we” once in the article. Once. The prosecution rests.

It’s clear you think I’ve shat upon one of your golden gods. I’m sorry you feel that way, man.
