ROBERT TRUJILLO Confirms METALLICA Is Working On 'Big Four' Tour - Sep. 15, 2009
Chris Varias of Metromix conducted an interview earlier this week with METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo. The question-and-answer session follows below.

Metromix: There's a rumor going around now about the four classic thrash bands (METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX) touring together. How would you feel about being part of that?

Trujillo: I think it's great. We've had a few different conversations on the subject. I'm friends with (SLAYER's) Kerry King and had dinner with him a few months back, and it came up there. I think (MEGADETH's) Dave Mustaine is amazing. I've never had a problem with him personally. I think it'd be great if METALLICA shared the stage with his band. METALLICA's still great friends with (ANTHRAX's) Scott Ian. There's a lot of history there. I think it'd be great for metal. I don't think all four bands have played together at the same time.

Metromix: So there's truth to the rumor?

Trujillo: There is, but nothing's concrete. It's not a sealed deal. We're working on it.

Metromix: How would egos come into play in terms of the order of bands on the bill?

Trujillo: Oh, there'd be a lot of egos. I think we'd be OK. It'd be an issue with the other three bands.

Metromix: How so? Would Dave Mustaine have an issue opening for METALLICA?

Trujillo: I don't think that would be an issue. I think it would be more an issue between MEGADETH and SLAYER.

Metromix: What's the story there?

Trujillo: I don't know if it would depend on the city, but I'm sure between those two bands, they would want to be up on the bill. I don't know. Who knows? My prediction is that maybe there would be something there. The only way we would do it is if we're headlining, and we would probably be the ones to put it together. I'm not saying that in a disrespectful way. All of these bands are amazing and super-cool.

Metromix: You played with Ozzy. Maybe you could get Sharon Osbourne to put the tour together.

Trujillo: Oh man, yeah. Let's see. She's a phone call away. Maybe I can get Ozzy to manage the situation. He'd sort them all out.

Metromix: When is METALLICA recording its next album?

Trujillo: I don't know — maybe next week, maybe tomorrow. Who knows? I'll talk to the guys today and see if they're up for it. Actually there's gonna be about another year of touring, so that's a hard one to say. There are a lot of ideas floating around. We always have recording gear on tour with us so we're always recording our ideas, but obviously the songs have not been written.

Metromix: Do you expect the new record to be a continuation of the "Death Magnetic" sound?

Trujillo: Going back to "Death Magnetic", it was great because (producer) Rick Rubin helped kind of bring Lars and (singer-guitarist) James (Hetfield) back into that sort of thrashy element. I think it will have a thrash factor. Keep it heavy. Keep it grooving. Keep it thrashy.

It would be killer. Could end up like the Metallica/GnR tour, but I dont think so. As long as Mustaine is happy to play before Metallica, it wont be a problem and the other bands would be all cool.

My personal lineup each night would be Metallica, Megadeth/Slayer switching positions, and then Anthrax.

An no fucking machine head on this tour, I love em, but they need to make it on their own and take a risk with headlining gigs to be the band they should be, not the band they are.

Yeah, they might be a band you like...but the majority of people would be like "Who gives a fuck?"

You get these four, and they sell out every arena they go! Be real folks, it's all about the $$$$

The truly sad part is that they would all be doing Anthrax a HUGE favor!!! And the only way that works for them is if they have either of the first 2 singers with them.

Drop Anthrax, for obvious reasons. And have Exodus open, for obvious reasons. Much better line up, and all bands would be connected by six degrees. Hammett played in Exodus, then Metallica. Mustaine played in Metallica, then Megadeth. King played in Slayer, then had a short stint in Megadeth. See how it all ties together in a nice, neat bow.

Totally agree with you that the majority of the people posting here aren't getting te idea behind this tour.

The idea is get "Big 4" together for a dream tour. The "Big 4" concept tour is METALLICA, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, and MEGADETH. The creative output of these artists or how much they've sold over the past twenty years is irrelevent.

Of course MACHINEHEAD, EXODUS and TESTAMENT all rule but aren't part of the "Big 4" concept. I vote for a secondary stage with the "lesser" known acts.

First off:

Make all four bands equal: Noone headlines. They all rotate randomly for every show.

Secondly, they should ONLY play material form their albums up to around 1989. In other words from their heyday, up to and NOT including that travesty Enter Sandman/Black album and all that shit that followed.

Same goes for Megadeth: Nothing after Rust In Peace
Slayer: Nothing after Seasons In The Abyss
Anthrax (although the mighty Exodus rightfully should belong among the Big 4): Persistance of Time

Hopefully the other bands would keep all the Metallica fanbois, fratbois, jocks and soccer moms the FUCK away from the concert, but I realize that's just a thrash metal pipe dream... :-)

I really don't think this tour will ever actually happen, but even if it does, it's still twenty years too late. Slayer is the only one of these four bands that can still rightfully call themselves a thrash metal band. The other three are merely trying to jump the bandwagon now that they think thrash is popular again. I love Megadeth, but have long stopped referring to them as a thrash outfit.

So why exactly should we label the aggregate of these four bands "the big four"? Anthrax isn't the fourth biggest band of anything anymore, except in answer to the question: "Which four bands are the biggest jokes in metal?" (A question to which the correct answer also includes Metallica, by the way).

@ hurricane hugo: Machine Head??? Machine Head is not and has never been a thrash metal band. They belong to the "we play whatever is currently deemed fashionable and popular type of metal" genre. Sure, they have put out some great albums, but please don't ever again refer to them as a thrash metal band. It's an insult to the likes of Exodus, Overkill and Testament.

Beyond that theres a history issue...both King and (obviously) Mustaine have blasted metallica, would either of them want to concede to them for headliner? without Zetro should not be on the bill. Exodus is part of the first wave of thrash, they deserve to be there b4 testament who is part of the second wave of thrash. Kreator or Destruction should be on this bill b4 Testament, I think. Especially since Kreator has just put out one of the best albums of their career. Same goes for Death Angel, they are truly the stars of the bay area thrash resurgence. They have definitely put out the best stuff of their career with Killing Season.

Yeah that settles it: tour is as follows

Metallica
Slayer
Megadeth
Anthrax
Death Angel, Kreator and Exodus (w/Zetro)

Personally i'd like to see Slayer as direct support for Metallica, Megadeth behind them and Anthrax first. Even though I think Anthrax's last couple of albums were way better than Megadeth's (which had maybe four good songs in total, cmon, be honest here)

Some new American thrash bands should be there as well, make a festival out of it. Saviours, Municipal Waste etc..
And a NYHC stage for shits and giggles Cro-Mags, Leeway, Crumbsuckers etc...

Dude, way to really ‘stick to the record’. Sure, some of these bands abandoned the thrash style on record for number of years, but they still….wait for it….play all those old ‘thrash’ songs live. For 40-something musicians, they’re all at the top of their game considering that. So diss them for the recent output on record all you want, and stay home, the rest of us will enjoy what they’re doing now in a live setting. Which is playing their revitalized thrash material plus the classic old stuff.

Yeah...I would be afraid to see what this is going to cost us to go see. I know Metallica has taken efforts to make tickets affordable for their shows, but I don't know if it will be possible with this.

Most of these bands are booked until December, so I wonder if it could possibly be a summer 2010 tour. If not, maybe it will be some sort of outdoor festival kind of deal. If that's the case, maybe some of the bands like Testament and Exodus will be a part of this day. Who knows...

It’s definitely next year. Something like this takes months of pre-planning and booking. From what it sounds like, it will be a European summer thing first, before maybe hitting the States in later summer, early fall. If we’re lucky.

but if egos really aren't a factor, Metallica should offer to put in an alternating bill, where the order switches from night to night. They could all get the same set time I think too. Rob says egos won't be a factor for Met, but then says the tour will only happen if they close? I think the other bands might disagree. I do like Metallica best of the 4, so I'd put them as the closer, but I think it would be a show of good will to offer a rotating order.

I'm excited for this. I have a feeling this tour will be an outdoor event though and I hate going to shows outdoors. You're 2 miles away from the stage and its hot as fuck out and alot of people in the crowd act like assholes and seeing these bands play together, I just want to be able to enjoy it.

I agree. You would think people would be excited about this...instead it's just "this band instead of that band. "these bands aren't thrash..." Whatever. These 4 have never toured together and it's an amazing chance to see all of them at the same time. It's almost like getting to see the Beatles tour with The Rolling Stones and Cream or something.

Obviously, IF it happens, Metallica will headline and Anthrax will open. Megadeth and Slayer might rotate, but I'd imagine Megadeth will go 3rd, because it's a much bigger deal to have them and Metallica together. If they do have a "Special Guest" before the big four, my vote is for Testament.

God dammit, how many times do I have to say that!! And plus, they had a slew of crappy albums in the nineties (starting with souls of black) when Pantera was holding the flag of metal for fucking everybody!!! Shiit! They have no business being on a big four tour unless it's part of a second stage with VIO-LENCE and Nuclear Assault!

The big 4 wasn`t an opinion, it was a fact. They were the 4 bands which broke through into the mainstream and became genuinely big acts. To have all 4 tour together would be awesome.

Why are people moaning about Anthrax and then saying that Exodus should be there? Now I love Exodus but there are *less* original members in the current Exodus line up than there are in the Anthrax one ( OK, than in the Anthrax *classic* line up anyway ).

As for Testament, yeah if we`re going down the big 5 act they`d be the next ones of course but people do seem to over-state their importance now. Originally they came along after the horse had bolted and they *have* released shit...see The Ritual for starters which sounds like a second rate Black album.

And while I like Slayer more than Megadeth, and beleive they are slightly more popular. I think Slayer and Megadeth should rotate the co-headline spot. Just so Dave dosent cry and cancel on this Idea. And ruin what could be one of the biggest Metal tours ever!!

I would guess 90 to 150 per ticket. So start saving!!!

Anthrax with Bush to me is fine, though Belladonna sang on their classic material... Bush is a better vocalist, hands down and seems like a cooler guy to boot. It'd be cool if some of these guys put aside past differences and maybe made guest appearances during the tour with each other; how cool would it be to Mustaine and Metallica bury the hatchet and do 'Hot The Lights' together? And to make it even better, have a great band like The Sword open for them all, maybe Exodus too... Ok, dream scenario finished.

No disrespect to Metallica here, I have see them live more than any band, but I don't want to hear anything off Death Magnetic Live and it seems that shit has polluted their setlist.

back in 1990 or 91. Dont remember but it was in Jacksonville Fl at a place that maybe held 5000. Anyway, Anthrax put on the best show. They are not my favorite band out of the three (SLAYER!) but they really did have the best set of the night. The best sound, performance, energy...all of it. It wasn't even close. I'm thinking Megadeth and Slayer may have just had an off night, but Anthrax were the champs that night.

By the way, Dave sang like shit back then. All nasily and highpitched whiny sounding. It appears he has more control over his voice these days, but I often wonder if he doesn't have some kind of mechanical help. I hope not. I hope he has just figured out how to sound like he does in the studio.

Anthrax
Megadeth
Slayer

I used to love all these bands, really, lateley I've sold 10 Megadeth CD's and don't listen to much slayer, anymore and got rid of my anthrax CD's cept, for the Antrhrology (killer 2CD).

oh, having Metallica...it matters.

Guy up above asks how can anyone say Megadeth are bigger than Slayer? Simply because Megadeth have sold some 25 million albums whereas Slayer are on around 11 million. Love both bands personally but there`s no doubting who are bigger commercially.

Back in the day (when the bands were first labeled "the big 4") it was the general consensus with most people I hung with that Anthrax was good, but not deserving of 'membership' in the club...so to speak. Exodus and Kreator were always the names brought up when discussing the topic.

I recall many of the metal shows in Montreal where the very same sentiments were expressed by most of the people I met - fans and bands alike.

I don't really give a shit about this tour. It happened 20 years too late. I'm not paying a fortune to see Metallica who can't sing or play anymore, The Dave Mustaine and The Hired Guns Band play 3 good songs and a bunch of newer crap, or Anthrax who have always sucked. As for Slayer, they still rock live, but if you've seen one Slayer show, you've seen them all.

BTW, all of you who are saying that it should be a rotating Bill for all 4 bands, are retarded. Can't you just see half the place leaving right after Metallica, if Metallica played early? If Anthrax got to play last they'd be playing to an empty arena.
