METALLICA's New Album Previewed: ROCK SOUND And METAL HAMMER Offer Their Opinions - June 4, 2008
UK's Rock Sound and Metal Hammer magazines have posted separate reports on the listening session for the new METALLICA album, which took place earlier today (Wednesday, June 4) in London.

Rock Sound writes: "On first impressions and just one listen, Rock Sound can confirm that the songs we've heard sound very much like classic METALLICA in vibe, harking back to the days of 'Master Of Puppets', '…And Justice For All' (but with bass) and the [self-titled 'black'] album — without sounding dated or tired.

"Of the six tracks Rock Sound heard this afternoon, only one had a working title — 'Flamingo'. With a slow intro, the song was reminiscent of 'Battery' in vibe, with two guitar solos and an undercurrent of melody and groove.

"The first single is an epic power rocker in the vein of 'The Unforgiven', 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Sanitarium', with a mid-tempo, head-banging section and some THIN LIZZY-esque twin guitar riffage.

"Another song features the lyrics, 'Into abyss, you don't exist, you can't resist the Judas kiss'; another features an almost RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE-esque drum 'n' bass undercurrent and lyrics about 'suicide' and 'cyanide'; while the final song we heard, dubbed 'The Song', clocks in at under five minutes and is a galloping thrash attack with quirks, and a sniff of TESTAMENT about it!

"We suspect other song titles could include 'Die Hard', 'Show Your Scars', and 'My Apocalypse' — but we cannot be held responsible if none of these titles or lyrics are accurate!

"Thankfully — there are plenty of Kirk Hammett traditional guitar solos and a decent drum sound. Hetfield's voice sounds in fine form too. All of the songs have many different parts to them, giving the impression that the quartet is revisiting the epic vibe of the band's 'classic' period."

Metal Hammer reports: "What do the songs sound like? Track one, which is only known by the cryptic working title 'Flamingo', opens up on thunderous rolling drums as lead guitar meets them head on, a flaring up in stop-start motion before it pulls itself together in rushes forward in classic thrash style, all crunching 'Fight Fire With Fire' riffs and drilling beats. It takes at least two minutes for James Hetfield's vocals to come in, and while they sound furious, this isn't the grittiest he's ever sounded, more open in tone, but while there's still a memorable vocal line for the 'chorus,' and there is so much going on in the song, and so many ideas thrown in and discarded for the next one that it's hard on first listen to pick out one riff that you're going to remember it by. But with galloping riffs and the return of guitar breaks rising up from out of the grooves you can hear the true METALLICA spirit, even though its as if reflected in mirrored mosaic.

"Track two is at heart an anthemic ballad that recalls 'Fight Fire With Fire' and 'Nothing Else Matters', with a chiming guitar intro, airy vocals and some slightly convoluted, progressive-style bridges that mutate into urgent riffing, more galloping riffs and guitar solos. Again, the song has a number of different sections, but it still sounds massive.

"Track three kicks off on a stop-start riff flecked with Eastern touches, as other bustling guitar lines play off each other and Hetfield's vocals retain the power of old, like some monolithic prophet overlooking events as mid-paced, chugging riffs come in, sounding like an army on the march, methodically shooting anyone in their path.

"Track four is reminiscent of 'Master Of Puppets' with more than a touch of heads-down SLAYER pacing thrown in. After an artillery-lobbing drum-led intro, it quickly sets off on marching, thrash mode, Hetfield's spat vocals taking melodic digressions, as he roars 'Bow down, surrender unto me.' The song's groove carries you along as it opens up into guitar atomospherics that bring LED ZEP to mind. It isn't quite the kind of irresistible monster they've created before, but METALLICA still prove they can still sound lean and epic at the same time, and when the track drops out into the grove mid-way though, you can imagine the chants coming from the crowds live.

"Track five has another strong opening, with an uncharacteristic bouncing groove not a million miles away from RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE making appearances throughout setting off sharp riffs that come up against an irregular barrage of percussion that sets it off briefly on a more melodic path and builds up once again into a thrilling riff-fest mayhem.

"Track six is the 'song', considerably shorter than the others, but full of clinically sharp riffing, more SLAYER-esque parts and galloping grooves, all hustle and bustle with a tinge of Eastern melody thrown in once more.

"Initial impressions is that this is an album that's going to get our blood chugging, but whether it's all we hoped for is going to take more plays to answer. Ultimately we're hugely relieved and pretty damn thrilled, and we can't fucking wait to hear the rest."

It sounds like I've been expecting: a very good, not stellar, record. Yes, Metallica are past their prime, but I'm confident they're showing on this record that they can still rock. Of course, there are plenty of Metallica haters that will despise the record, even if it turns out to be the second coming of Ride the Lightning...

I'm looking forward to hearing it.

METALLICA's forthcoming effort, "St. Anger", is nothing short of "the finest thing [the band] have put their name to," according to the latest issue of Britain's Kerrang! magazine, which recently had an opportunity to preview a couple of the cuts set to appear on the CD. "The volume is intoxicating, the songs even more so," the report continues. "METALLICA haven't gone backwards, they have gone elsewhere, somewhere they haven't really gone before. Much of the speed is back — speed that recalls the days of 'Battery' and 'Dyers Eve'. But the format is remarkedly different. This isn't controlled aggression, much of it is uncontrolled violence. It's ironic that at a time when the band are so at peace with one another they should make an album that sounds like they're at war. As one track follows the another — there are only working titles like 'Monster' and 'Frantic' — the difference not only between what you expect but what has gone becomes clear. There's no space between the drums and the guitars, there are riffs everywhere, there is anger and confusion — 'Do not know the answer, I don't know what the question is' is one lyric - there is swearing and shouting and time changes and speed and fury. It is difficult on a first listen not to surmise that 'St. Anger' is the finest thing METALLICA have put their name to. All the songs I'm assured, sound like this. There are no ballads. Instead there's an assault of speed and volume and anger and intensity. This is exactly the kind of thing that made a slogan such as 'Birth, school, METALLICA, death' an apposite and appropriate summation of everything this band could muster, both in themselves and their audience."

Okay so other then the line "finest thing they put their name on" that review is 100% accurate. I personally love St. Anger and think with a better production would be much better looked upon. I feel the fury and anger and chaos on it. Give St. Anger a full listen and you may change your view. No matter what this album will be bashed. People on here are so poised to jump it and say see, they suck, it is not Master or Ride the Lightning....Some people cant accept change and their personal lives probably reflect as well as will their mullet. Us Metallica fans have been fortunate enough to hear all their music you have turned your back on. You never got to enjoy Fixxer or Carpe Diem or Bleeding Me or Outlaw Torn and on and on. If they never changed they would not be as relevant or true to themselves and their sound by now would be so played out and old and everyone would be saying they suck and are one dimensional. When someone is on top it is natural to knock them down. I have been a fan since 1985 and will be forever. I think the new reviews sounds great. I hope it is melodic and fast and slow and mid paced....That is what made Metallica stand out over Slayer or Testament and it is the sound Pantera and many others have tried to acheive without success. Metallica at 45 is more metal then any other poser band that sings like their fricking cookie monster.

That Kerrang review was pretty much dead on. Except for the part at the end that says it's good, because St. Anger wasn't focused enough to be a good album. But Kerrang didn't say it was a return to form. They didn't liken it to the 80s material. They basically said it was so different that you almost don't know it's Metallica. I have some hppe for the new stuff. I know it won't be an earth shattering album, but I'm expecting a solid effort that I can give some spins and have it really grow on me. Is that so far fetched?

And I think Metal Hammer accidentally typed Fight Fire with Fire under the ballad section, because most journalists don't mention the same classic song in different sections. He probably meant The Unforgiven or Fade To Black.

Complete nonsense. Pantera had never wanted to sound like Metallica, whilst Hammett would suck balls before he tried to match Darrell's guitar work. Pantera actually had their unique sound. And yeah, Slayer also kicks shit out of Metallica - big time.

The new Metallica album would probably be better than St.Anger, checked some riffs outta that Mission Metallica website - sounds ok.

As for those major magazines reviewing the album... of course they won't say the new Metallica sucks asian cock, cause they get paid to "have" an opinion, and for major bands the opinion must be positive to promote the album. You really can do nothing about it.

Let's just hope the new Metallica will at least match The Black Album. At least.

Here is a part left out of this interview on the Metal Hammer site

Metallica - WE’VE HEARD IT!
Without doubt, the biggest metal event this year is going to be the release of Metallica’s new album, and everyone at Metal Hammer has been hit with feverish anticipation, having been invited to hear six tracks. Well, we’ve just gotten back, and we can answer you this:

Is it St Anger? No.

Does it suck? Fuck no!

Are the solos back? Fuck yes!

Does it sound like the pre-Load Metallica of yore? Mostly, but while the tracks we’ve heard call to mind some old albums, most of them clock in around the seven-minute mark, each one containing a number of different sections, so the band don’t settle on any one riff for long. Bottom line? These songs are going to sound amazing live.

And how’s Lars Ulrich’s snare doing? Well, it’s definitely there but then we weren’t listening to mastered versions, so there’s still hope that they won’t end up sounding like they did on an album that rhymes with Faint, uh… Banger.

What else? There’s no album title yet, and there are no individual song titles, but the album’s been referred to as ‘nine epics and one song’, with ten tracks adding up to a total of 75 minutes. You do the math.

Just look at James and Lars. They look lile guys who could do a Matchbox 20 album. There's nothing metal about them.

As someone who has bought these mags over the years the only one I would be more inclined to believe is 'Rocksound', as they didn't have a load of handshake deals going on i.e Metal Hammer & RoadRunner.
That being said, I'll wait until I hear it, but the snippets sound like a vast improvement on some of there later material.
As some other people have said, I don't want a repeat of RTL or MOP, it would be nice if it had the influence of those albums & the energy.
Personally I don't think it will match Testament or Overkill, those guys seem to have kept a strong feeling of energy throughout their music all their careers.

Your right, Pantera were never a glam band that was influenced by .....it is coming back to me....Metallica. Pantera never wrote a slow song with slow verses and a heavy chorus....Who else did that? Dont get me wrong, I love Pantera and had seen them live probably 10 times and have them in my car now.... I just think that all those bands of that era tried to copy the Metallica formula. You had the ballady song with a hard end, acoustic intros into heavy songs, instrumentals and so on. Some did it great, but never quite at the level Metallica did. That is all I meant.

And justice for all. Sure, the bass sound isn't there but the songs are great, there's a will to be more progressive on it and it's the best performance Lars ever did. So i would rate the albums like this...

KEA = 8
RTL = 8.5
MOP = 8.5
AJFA = 9
TBA = 7.5
Load = 7
Reload = 6
St. Anger = 3

"Funny how the first three albums (mostly written by Dave Mustaine) are classics".

Want to know what's really funny? Mustaine only has writing credit for SIX songs throught Metallica's first three albums. Now, there are 10 songs on KEA, and 8 on RTL and MOP. 10+16= 26.
Mustaine therefore had writing credit on only 23% of all the songs from those albums. 23%, my friend, does not equal MOST. It doesn't even equal HALF. At most, one could say Dave Mustaine helped write A HANDFUL of early Metallica songs.

What is the lesson for today then? To stop regurgitating the same bullshit line over and over. Oh, and you're an idiot.

If you read that, it perfectly describes St. Anger. All songs sounding the same, lots of angst, lots of riffs over each other, bad structure, and nothing like Metallica has ever done before.

So I would say Kerrang nailed that review, except being the finest Metallica work.

1 of the reason theyv been goin downhill since black is coz of bob rock
i hope that rick ruben whiped these guys into shaped good and propper.
i am hesitantly optimistic but i will listen to the album before i decide to buy it.

St. Anger wasn't as bad as you pukes made it out to be. All it was was James' reflections on sobriety. It's clear as day. The album wasn't meant for the masses, notice how you NEVER hear St. Anger songs on the radio?

They suck from a radio play angle.

But from an artistic point of view, they didn't care, still don't that was the vibe that came from them at the time. All feeling really, Metallica was questioning themselves, their direction, their drive, everything and that album was a reflection of those years.

It was a mess.

To expand, if you listen to the album as a chapter in Metallica history, it makes perect sense and the album takes on a different vibe than the standard ragging on it.

It served it's purpose and they never really questioned themselves, Metallica has admitted in hindsight they could have changed a few things, what band doesn't say that after a release? Metallica never totally shit on it. That album was them, shoddy, off tempo, thrown together, erratic, desperate.

It's the same old thing really ... band announces CD Blabbermouth users either love it or hate it yea yea...we get it.

I personally don't like their last couple of efforts, and only like up to and justice for all with the acception of Garage Inc.

But alot of ppl give this band slack because of where they are in the mainstream of things ... just like wants going on with Opeth.

I think that the ppl who sit and slag bands (whether big and famous or not / whether good or not) need to realize they didn't ask for this attention when they started out ... so i don't think the bands really care what we think and say ...

I will buy the album just like i did with St. Anger, and all of the albums before it, and give it a shot ... it's not the same as their glory days but hey who fucking cares ... avid music lovers can enjoy any form of music right?

all the people who say "fuck you because you like metallica (or anyother band)" can just go on saying what they're going to say because they're just narrowminded pricks who will forever think they're right.

after all not every band stays Underground forever ... like metallica, dreamtheater, megadeth, opeth , and band after band after .. eventually 40 ppl will hear them, then 100 , then many many more....so who really cares who they are can't we just listen to what they're making?

That's the point of music right?? to get your own perspective??

Okay, so if you do the math by what's listed in the liner notes, Dave Mustaine doesn't appear to have as much influence over the progression of Metallica. But if you listen to the first three albums, you can hear it.

Now, I'm not going to speculate on whether anything he actually "wrote" ended up being used on Master Of Puppets, but seriously, there had to be something there, even if not direct. Mustaine was there in the beginning and Metallica used stuff he had written on their first two albums, even if it was -only- 23% according to the listed writing credits.

Listen the first three albums, then take a listen to ...And Justice For All. Different sound. While some of that may be due to the underwhelming production and switch to Newsted, it could be that Metallica had moved a bit further away from the sound that Mustaine had brought to the band. At the same time, Megadeth wasn't sounding exactly as it had in the beginning either, although the lineup changes probably had a big part in that.

We can toss this one back and forth for years and we'll probably never know for sure. Sure, Hetfield could come out and say that more of Mustaine's material had been used (if that's even true), which would fill in some of it. But wouldn't it make sense that some of what Mustaine brought musically stuck with the guys and they continue to use that, even if not fully conscious that what they had done sounded like something Dave might have contributed? Sure, he wasn't there for the albums, but he was there when Metallica was forging its initial identity and sound.

Why shouldn't there be some of Mustaine left in Metallica?
