05. Arctic Swarm
06. Mount North
07. Unearthly Kingdom

"Highly anticipated" does not do justice to the eagerness with which fans have waited for IMMORTAL's first album since 2002's "Sons of Northern Darkness". Much like EMPEROR, we are talking about band that inspires rabid devotion from both fans and critics because of a one-of-a-kind status in black metal. As such, there will be more than a few fans and critics that view the worth of "All Shall Fall" through nostalgia-tinted glasses.

The short of it is that "All Shall Fall" is a pretty good IMMORTAL album, but one that does not reach the bar set by "Sons of Northern Darkness". Overall, the album stays true to the classic IMMORTAL style, that distinctive blend of frost bitten black metal with trad-metal tendencies in the song structures. That unique method of creatively filling space with generally unique riffs and subtle accents that conjures visions of a giant guitar wielded by an enormous snow beast in the middle of a blizzard is, in a general sense, still heard "All Shall Fall". The ascending riffs on the title track and the driving, yet tuneful, riff of "The Rise of Darkness" are prime examples. Both also happen to be catchy and destined to be considered classics. With the exception of skull-cracking speedster "Hordes of War" and album-closing ice-march "Unearthly Kingdom", the album is mostly mid-paced and inclusive of the occasional atmospheric effect, such as the light/acoustic intro to "Norden on Fire", which ultimately transforms into an almost folky cadence, although not as folky as the Celtic twist during "Arctic Swarm". Rounding out the album is another prototypical tune in "Mount North", one that features an effectively simplistic croak chorus that will be immediately recognizable to even those only marginally familiar with the work of IMMORTAL.

So what's not to like? "All Shall Fall" would seem to have everything a fan would want, right? Well, kind of. No blanks are fired and the album does include a couple of classic cuts, but it does not deliver from front to back the way that "Sons of Northern Darkness" does, to use the most recent example. However, that may be expecting too much and probably sells "All Shall Fall" short because the songwriting is still significantly better than average. The bigger problem to my ears is a softening of the jagged edges that always defined the IMMORTAL sound. The riffs just don't contain all those barbs and sharp points that leave the flesh gouged and bloody. The same goes for the drumming. The playing is just as competent, but the attack isn't as thunderous. Those two elements are pretty damn important to the IMMORTAL approach. Big, bad, and dangerous is what I expect from IMMORTAL. Unfortunately, those aren't words I'd use to describe "All Shall Fall", an otherwise worthwhile IMMORTAL album.

Pretty much agree with the review. It's a good album by anyone else's standards, but by Immortal's standards, it's definitely no At The Heart of the Winter or Sons of Northern Darkness. Great to have Immortal back, though.

There are actually people out there who don't think SOND was a turd? If we must make comparisons to quality Immortal records and are going to ignore the real classics, can we please just reference ATHOW and leave it at that?

Before this release, I'd only listened to SOND and quite enjoyed it, but this album has truly cemented me as an Immortal fan, and I've recently dug into their older material (I've become very fond of Pure Holocaust and ATHOW).

Even though (or maybe because) it doesn't contain some of the extremely catchy songs that SOND had, I still like this album better overall. To me, it has more in common with Immortal's 90's stuff than SOND, it's more frostbitten (to use a very "Immortaly" expression), and the great production definitely helps this cause. My only complaint is the lack of high speed riffs and drums (read: not enough blast beats!)

This album has made an Immortal fan out of me! A solid 9/10.

I won't rate it. I always heard about this band being awesome yadda yadda so picked up SOND. It seemed a lot like a rock/basic metal album more then anything I mix with black metal. This album sounds the same. I might have to go further back to see what the hell I missed and why these guys are huge. Maybe more listens.

I did like I though. Found that a good catchy album.

Yes, it's not as good as SoND or ATHoW, but definately better than the average 7/10 score it got. "Norden On Fire" and "Unearthly Kingdom" were my favorite tracks on here, probably because they're the longest and closest to resembling the 'Epic' sound of ATHoW.

The first two songs kicked ass too. "Mount North" and "Hordes to War" didn't do much for me though :/

Great CD. I got the pre-order in the mail about 5 days before the U.S. release, and I've listened to it every day since. "Norden on Fire" alone is worth the purchase; I like this song nearly as much as "In My Kingdom Cold", which is one of my favorite songs by any band. "All Shall Fall" is definitely in my top 3 for the year, exceeded only by Weapon's "Drakonian Paradigm" (buy this album now) and The Gates of Slumber's "Hymns of Blood and Thunder". A lot of strong releases this year, and Immortal, as expected, is very near the top.

It may be in Algebra or English class, but for album reviews "average/mediocre" is in most cases considered to be a 5/10. A 7 therefore is indicative of good album. Carry on.

Huge Immortal fan here.

Were did the thrash of Damned in Black and violence of Battles in the North go?? The distinctive songwriting is gone, the agression is gone (save two good tracks "Hordes of War" and "The Rise of Darkness").

What a snoozefest, maybe they were trying to expand their fan base and snag some non black metal fans with this? Boring epic metal is not what I want to here from one of the most intense metal bands ever. This should have been released as an "I" side project release.

7/10

The album is decent but disappointing after the phenomenal SOND. I think that it sounds way too much like Bathory, esp. like a cross between "Under the sign of the black mark" and "Blood fire death", almost like the first Immortal album but with a great production.

They had developed a great style with their previous 3 efforts, that they've perfected with SOND and now this new album with its bathory-influenced tunes sound a bit uninspired to be honest.

this album sounds like SOND with a touch of Blizzard Beasts, especially 'Hordes to War'. Glad Immortal decided to go back in time and try to recapture their earlier more raw sounds. Of course ASF is no Battles in the North or Pure Holocaust. Hopefully they'll deviate more from the polished Abyss Studios sound and get back to their old style on the next album.

This album is not bad at all...sadly it sounds like a squel to Between Two Worlds by I. That album wasn't bad, but this is in fact IMMORTAL and not I. Abbath seems to have trouble seperating the two bands sounds..even though he has made the unforgettable sounds for both of those bands. The artwork, lyrics, ideaology, and Horgh's drumming is very Immortal in all of it's glorious ways, but the heavy metal aspect has made this album less than what it could have been. Even though I believe this album is an easy 8/10 it just lacks the edge and brutal black metal progression that led up to this album. Please bring back Immortal and keep "I"in your heavy metal fantasy where it belongs. Half of this album could have been put into the "I" folder and been used for an excellent sequel tot he first album. Bring back the evil frosted brutality of the last two albums please.

Love it!! You can really see an improvement from SOND (well I see it)... It's a good album, too bad there are only 7 songs, totalling a 40-minute album... I want more of them! And I don't like comparing to the classic albums, but Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism was one-of-a-kind.

are very average Immortal albums IMO. DFM is just Bathory worship. Immortal didn't really find their own sound until P.H, then became a parody of themselves on B.I.T.N, and to a lesser extent Blizzard Beasts, which plays like a black metal tribute to Morbid Angel.

I've been listening to Immortal since 1993, and i must admit that the only 90's album of theirs that is still listenable is A.T.H.O.W. Playing at more sensible tempos was the best decision Immortal ever made. It really opened up their sound.

Anyway, ASF is good, but it's not quite up to the level of A.T.H.O.W or S.O.N.D.

7.5-8.

We must listen to different stuff. Nile, Megadeth, Belphegor, Marduk and even Slayer released better albums than they've released in years.
Really the only dissapointments I've found are this Immortal (or should I call it"I") album and the Hypocrisy was a slight letdown.
