I still remember reviewing 2003's "Lucifer Incestus", and here I am already reviewing my fifth BELPHEGOR CD, "Walpurgis Rites-Hexenwahn". It seems that the Austrian act has gotten even more prolific these past few years. What is far more impressive than the sheer number of albums in a relatively short time span is the inarguable fact that the black/death outfit consistently creates quality releases and, up until "Bondage Goat Zombie", BELPHEGOR had made significant leaps of musical progression while retaining their always harsh, always aggressive style.

And I say "up until 'Bondage Goat Zombie'" not because "Walpurgis Rites-Hexenwahn" is some kind of disappointment or a comparatively weak effort, but only because with the possible exception of lyrical themes and the use of "original chants and incantations from archaic scripts", the album does not so much expand as it does steer a purer course of demonic ferocity. In fact, some of the nuances and expansive musical terrain explored on "Bondage Goat Zombie" have been pulled back a hair in favor of an approach that returns in some ways to the pure hellish aggression of "Lucifer Incestus", yet retains the dark majesty and vast improvements in melodic sensibility that are heard on the last three releases. In other words, it is another example of why BELPHEGOR is in a class all its own.

Musically, those brilliant Symphony-for-Satan harmonies still abound, one of the primary trademarks of the BELPHEGOR sound — and damn, it never seems to get old. Every ode to iniquity is not a blast-fest like fierce opener "Walpurgis Rites" or "Destroyer Hekate", yet there is more of a front-to-back relentlessness present compared to "Bondage Goat Zombie". Rather than major structural departures, it is more a matter of tempo variance and subtler tweaks, except for the sadomasochistic march that is "Der Geisterteiber" (inclusive of a sinister bass line cadence to open and a downright frightening air raid siren effect). Yet even with that one, as well as the slight turn toward a more traditional thrash approach during the verses of "The Crosses Made of Bone", it is still BELPHEGOR in all its S&M-laced Satanic glory. By the way, as far as classic BELPHEGOR tunes are concerned, look no further than the uncompromising lasciviousness of "Hail the New Flesh".

Truth be told, we're really splitting hairs here, which is difficult to avoid when you've reviewed five albums from the same band. The most important point to take home with you is that "Walpurgis Rites-Hexenwahn" is another great BELPHEGOR disc that is about as far from bowing to trends or compromising musical integrity as a group can get. I'm not sure BELPHEGOR are capable of doing any wrong at this point; they've surely not given any indication of it yet.

Belphegor just released Bondage Goat Zombie a little over a yr ago and now they are back w/another full length. Walpurgis Rites: Hexenwahn see the band continuing the trend of blending death/black metal w/the same crisp production as the last 2 cd's. The cd blasts out the starting gates w/the title track and it's an amazingly brutal track. Next up is the I am Sin song which clocks in over 7min. This is a great song w/a killer riff, melodies and solos. Than comes hail the new flesh. This song is another face kicker and the last 10 seconds is like one of the best most pounding endings of any song I've heard in a while. They have a video for the song der geistertreiber. The video is ridiculously cheesy and bad, but funny. The song itself is a departure for the band and sees them playing a song more suited for a Rammstein cd, w/industrial and bass lines throughout, quite a good song though. Missing here are more of the chanting/droning vocals that Helmuth incorporates throughout his releases, and I really miss those parts, they were killer and creepy. I find this cd great, but I was expecting more, especially after last yr's amazing Bondage Goat Zombie. I think the band came back a little too quick w/this release and should have spent another yr crafting this. But all in all I have been listening to this alot, due to the fact that it is such a strong release and supremely brutal, I just think it was maybe a little rushed. The cd cover is very creepy and the lyrics are the same perverse and blasphemous kind that the band is known for. All in all this is a solid 4.5 for me and may make my top 10 list this year.

They deserve a much higher score for this slab of blasphemy. I dig the cheesyness of the video, it fits in with the concept of Belphegor...

Awesome World Class band, one of my favorite artist of the modern extreme metal era 1991- present.

Will be a top 10 album of the year for me !!!!!!

As far as the first comment, Venom of one of the first authentic metal acts, so don't logic dictate that most artist will utilize them as a influence and act upon those ideas while incorporating there own ideas and originality.

Myself I could careless if a band is original, just as long as they are not MALL-CORE or emo-indie rock inspired.

I actaully like bands in the Venom/ Slayer/ Destruction/ Celtic Frost/ Bathory/ Sodom family of bands, over todays corporate rock of the hot topic contrived mallcore !!!!!

Instead of punishing bands for there influences, I actually seek out artist, who pick out there influences from the upper 10 percent, instead of artist who get there influences from the lower 90%.

As far as originality, who cares if a bands has it fine, but if they do not that is fine to, because even the most original bands are TOTALLY derivitate.

I love belphegor and I am going to see them in Chicago next week. That said, this album to me seems rushed. I love Black metal but it seems to me Belphegor misfired on this one and went a little too much Black Metal. They had the perfect balanace of Black and Death Metal on all of there earlier albums (except Pestapocalypse which leaned too much Death Metal) and Bondage Goat zombie was there defining moment. It had killer catchy songs but was still evil and perverted as fuck. I am going to buy this one but it has none of the catchiness of the last one and leans Black metal way too much. I hope they take there time for the next one and deliver the killer album they are capable of delivering. 7 stars for me.

A little bit better, but a little bit worse. I sure do miss the days of their pre-Pestapokalypse stuff.

This is my favorite Belphegor album since Lucifer Incestus. Bondage Goat Zombie was a bit too death metal and not enough varied songwriting. The blazing black metal is back kids!

We have one of the best blackened thrash songs I've heard in a long time on this album "The Crosses Made of Bone". The black metal songs are more blistering and the few death metal songs (Hail the New Flesh) are much better than anything on the previous album.

After the slow and boring Immortal album, I've thankfully found some quality with the new Marduk and Belphegor releases.

9.5/10

A good album but I have to listen it more. I think they are repeating the same ideas from their masterpiece Goatreich-Fleshcult.

I also thought that this cd came out very quickly and that it wouldn't be very good because Bondage Goat Zombie wasn't very good. But then I listened to it. It is a great cd, surprised the hell out of me, and I listen to it constantly. It owns the shit out of the new Immortal album.

This is nothing short of another classic Belphegor album. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a complete progression, but its not a step backwards (completely) either. It has mixes of a few of their older albums while also keeping it fresh with newer artwork, lyrics, and ideas. Solid 8/10 IMO. Keep it evil guys!

Peoples who don't dig into this stuff will never like it, but others, like me, who can't get enough of this energic melodic extreme black/death metal are having a blast with Belphegor new album.

9.0 easily... few bands can achieve this much in less than a single year following their last album.
