It seems that every time an artist is interviewed about his or her newest piece of work, they're quick to call the effort their "best yet," or be otherwise complimentary towards the album. After all, nobody in their right mind would doubt themselves in the faces of their fans and every musician strives to evolve and grow with every passing year. This sort of talk has become typical press fodder and I think most of us would rather form our own, unbiased opinions. This is why, when I read that NILE guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders called the band's sixth album their "most eclectic offering to date," I took the comment with a grain of salt. For one, NILE has long been (in my opinion) one of death metal's most eclectic acts, at least in regards to their ability to push the genre to its limits with their exotic slant. Secondly, I just wanted the new album to kick ass. After being destroyed by "Ithyphallic" and seeing this band finally get the chance to reach a wider audience thanks to their spot on the '07 Ozzfest, it was a no-brainer that they would have to bring their A-game to keep the momentum going. Goddamn if they didn't deliver.

Not only does "Those Whom The Gods Detest" feature some of the most culturally diverse flavorings we've heard from NILE, but the disc also boasts some of the most progressive and focused examples of songwriting I've heard from any death metal album this year. With guitars that roar like a beast from another world, Sanders and Dallas Toller-Wade (who also plays bass on the album) tear through the monolithic opener "Kafir!" Classic NILE technicality mixed with plodding brutality and samples of Islamic prayer to drive the song's subject matter, this is one hell of a way to start an album. More straightforward tracks like "Hittite Dung Incantation" and "Permitting The Noble Dead To Descend To The Underworld" prove that few are equal to NILE when it comes to delivering a flawless performance on disc. The already renowned feet of drummer George Kollias fly faster and hit harder than ever, while Toller-Wade and Sanders' growls are often legible, yet never lacking in ferocity. The disc's longer tracks, "4th Arra Of Dagon" and the title track (both clocking in at over eight minutes) see Sanders make good on his promise to deliver a left-of-center piece of work. Both tunes bring an exotic array of instruments to the table, as well as run through a wide spectrum of tempo changes as dynamics. Strap yourself in for an epic ride with this pair of songs.

While "Annihilation Of The Wicked" will probably stand out as a favorite amongst the NILE faithful, the work they've done since that album has been equally impressive on many levels. "Those Whom The Gods Detest" is not a huge departure from anything this band has done in the past, but it is, perhaps, their most progressive release thus far. Like any high-caliber death metal album should, this disc is complex enough to challenge its listeners, yet brutal enough to give them an excuse to go nuts.

I don't hate Nile by any means, but they are a limited listen. I can't take them for longer than a CD length. The constant blast beats and non-stop erratic guitar work gets tiresome quickly and I have to take a break. Not to mention that live, I honestly haven't been that impressed with Nile. The aforementioned reasons give their shows a drowned out performance and it's difficult to differentiate between songs.

I do like these guys but I'm in no rush to buy this new disc. I have a feeling that the so-called "diversity" on this disc is no different than that of their past albums.

The name Nile conjures up many images to the human mind. For me it is blistering eqyptian infused death metal that few can touch. Well Nile return with one of their strongest relesases to date. I got this on relapse preorder last week, before it hit the streets and have listened to it non stop. I gotta say #1 the production is the best the band has ever achieved. All instruments are heard clearly and Eric Rutan did an amazing job w/the drums-they are thunderous. No muddy mixes to the songs or anything like that. The songs are more epic this time around. All the songs are long. Cd opens w/Kafir!-brilliant guitar work-just blast your ears off. Another doozy is Arra of Dagon. Over 8min long and you will be chanting the chorus and headbang until the end. The band incorporates some female singing on the cd as well as middle eastern instruments. The result is a more expansive and epic sounding Nile cd. The brutality has been kicked up a notch, seriously this may be their finest hour, literally, cd clocks in at 57 minutes. Never boring, you would think w/such long songs that it would be an issue, but it only enhances the band and makes them better and more creative. One of the top 10 best death metal releases of the year. It's really great to have that excellent drum mix so you can hear george in all his blasting and fills glory. This cd is super brutal, heavy, technical and few bands can still touch Nile!

i honestly can't see how people can like nile... all they are is this thick wall of indistiguishable noise where the drums have a repetive beat that swallows the music and whenever the guitar rises above it it just sounds like shit. as for the screaming, i hate bands that just scream for the sake of screaming. it sound awful, no skill involved, and its just abrasive and irritating. when i hear screaming i like it fit the the music, (ie amon amarth, rosetta, arch enemy, neurosis, etc), not to give me a headache. saw these guys at ozzfest, had to leave after 5 minutes they were so bad... definitly not my thing. don't understand it esxcept that some people find it "scary and agressive," i guess.

on another note, i think its finally to give blabbermouth the big fuck you, they finally put up reviews after 3 weeks of having the same reviews up and NONE of the incredible albums that just came out are reviewed. baroness (album of the year, def. in the top 10 of all time for me)? russian circles? pelican? rammstein? or even fucking trans siberian orchestra? blabbermouth fucking sucks.

I need to know how it is in relation to the last one. I loved everything up to "Annihilation of the Wicked", but "Ithyphallic" was the biggest let-down I've heard in 20 years. The songs were exceedingly lacking, and the sound was weak and powerless. Is this one "Ithyphallic" round 2, or have Nile come to their senses and delivered another of the killer albums they're known for?

Hey man, I loved the last cd, think it's amazing, but you are right the production was low and rather flat sounding. I loved AOTW, but felt the production got a little too muddy. This production is more in line w/In their Darkened Shrines-crisp and clear. My review above goes into more detail. Basically this is the best sounding Nile cd to date, bar none. No muddy production and the songs are epic, brutal and most of all memorable. You will not be disappointed. This is coming from someone who was in the music business and has been into death metal since its inception. -Frank

I got the album in the mail on Friday, and I've been chanting "There is no God but God" ever since! This is the best production Nile has had yet and very strong songwriting indeed. Karl, Dallas and George can do no wrong, but in my opinion it's hard for those three to greatly improve on a near perfect sound.

Ever since "Annihilation of the Wicked" they've hit a stride so damn good that they can only do some tweaks here and there, sort of like what Behemoth has done since "Demigod." But hey, no complaints here, just praise! Album of the year, right next to "Evangelion!"

no disrespect but I gave up on them ages ago.

Deeds Of Flesh had been stagnating for most part of the decade, but last year they finally managed to come up with something fresh that revived my love for death metal.

Same goes with Suffocation whose last two albums had done nothing for me, despite being a HUGE fan of this band, but they too put out earlier this year an album that stands up to their reputation.

Nile, on the other hand...these guys are great players, but they seemingly forgot how to write a good riff after Black Seeds. Minor harmonic scale, eastern theme, solo, chuga-chuga, minor scale, solo, chuga chuga, blast blast blast double-bass blast blast slow blast blast blast. Geez.

Chris Lollis is their full-time bassist now. Wade confirmed it in a recent interview. Also, this cd kicks ass. It's not quite as technically sporadic (to me it seems that they let sections go on much longer than they used to) as the older material, but it's still one hell of a good cd.

Nile is fucking awesome. Mummy Metal LOL ... well on this album its more than mummies. I picked up Karl Sanders' latest solo album about two weeks ago and its very diverse and well wrought (i.e. not just Egyptian flavored). I see he carried that diversity over to the latest Nile release.

For my money, it doesn't get any better than In Their Darkened Shrines, but this is another fine release that shows Nile branching out a bit to other cultures, yet keeping in tune to their brutal ass death roots. Its a good move, now that he's played the Egypt card perhaps one time to many.

You've got some valid points there. As as there really isn't a forum to address Blabbermouth's haphazard CD reviewing, this is as good a place as any.

Blabbermouth went from reviewing CDs every week to every two weeks, then every month, now I don't know what the hell they're doing! And how exactly do they determine what to review? They review the new NILE but not the new SLAYER? They review the new KISS but not the new DETHKLOK?

And what is a KISS review doing on this site anyway? They may be rock, but not metal and certainly nothing these guys write could convince me to give those clowns another listen. I like the fact that Blabbermouth reviews obscure albums from bands no one listens to or gives a shit about, and I value their opinion more than others because these guys obviously know their metal, but c'mon...get some consistency.

I won't lie, Nile are one of my favorite DM bands by far. And even though I can still listen to it, Ithyphallic missed the mark in more ways than one. The production just had no weight to it... clicky drums, weak guitars, and the transition to Dallas Toler-Wade taking over most of the vocals was pretty awkward... I missed Karl's roar pretty much anytime Dallas would attempt it... and even the lyrics seemed tossed off. The idea to do a slower, more doom-based record could have been really cool, but it didn't really work.

Here, it sounds like they recognized what didn't work about the last record, and came back to the ultra-fast, brutal, and ultra fucking heavy sound of Annhilation of the Wicked, but for variety sake they incorporated even more of the eastern stuff... with actual world-music sounding samples and vocals during certain parts, the effect is that the songs are made easier to distinguish from one another. They also vary tempo a good amount, and the two epic length tracks fucking kill... some of the longer songs on Ithyphallic could definitely drag ass, but these are both solid. This record, in my opinion, is on par with their best material (my personal favorite is In Their Darkened Shrines), and some people will probably like it best since some of the songs are more straight-forward in a certain sense. Definitely a killer Nile album... if you ever liked them before, you'll love this... and if you thought older stuff was boring or ran together, you just might be able to get into this one... but hell, at the end of the day, its still Nile, love it or hate it. I fucking love it.

and I must say that I'm really digging this. I admit that I've only really gotten into them when AOTW came out. This album, so far, may be the best of the three (AOTW, Ithyphallic, FWTGD). The production is great and it isn't the tidal wave of sound like Ithyphallic. What makes it better than AOTW is the tempo changes that allow the album to breath a bit and the greater Middle Eastern influence. That alone really makes this a keeper.
