Took a while for me to get into this one, and that threw me for a loop after the last coupla slabs of immediate, delectable, relentlessly-catchy CLUTCH stoner swamp groove. "Strange Cousins From the West" is an altogether slinkier beast, taut and sparse, with a lot of sinewy funk and dirt-floor blues slithering around the skeletons of these Seventies-shaggy jams. It's got that jammy, off-the-floor vibe of their more recent stuff, but hearkens back a little bit to the "Elephant Riders" era of more obtuse, angular arrangements and subtle, quirky little tempo changes and such.

The flow of this record is awesome, especially the killer first half -- from the frantic slide blues of "Motherless Child" to the doomy dirge of their surprisingly affecting eulogy of Abraham Lincoln, to the head-nodding shuffle of "Struck Down" and the hair-raising guitarwork of "Minotaur" (some nice drum fills here from the ever-reliable J-P Gaster). Vocalist Neil Fallon, usually the ringmaster of an odd assortment of fictional ne'er-do-wells and eccentrics, throws a few curveballs this time, especially with the aforementioned "Abraham Lincoln", as well as the Spanish-language "Algo Ha Cambiado" (a straight-faced cover of 70's Argentinian blues-rockers Pappo's Blues that comes off like a CLUTCH original). But fear not, he still brings to life a whole slew of oddballs, most notably the paranoid conspiracy nut of "50,000 Unstoppable Watts", while getting in a few semi-disguised topical digs as well ("Freakonomics", "The Amazing Kreskin").

The old-timers will ask, already knowing the answer, if CLUTCH has finally gone back to sounding like the angry, abrasive almost-hardcore band they cut their teeth on. Ain't gonna happen, "Impetus" fans, so get over it. As for the rest, they'll find that "Strange Cousins From the West" kinda encapsulates the last few years of CLUTCH evolution, minus some of the jam-band excesses that were beginning to creep in, and ties it all back in nicely to their late-1990's work. A couple songs are merely okay ("Witchdoctor", "Sleestak Lightning"), which may have added to the initial ambivalence about the record as a whole — but with tunes as kickass as "Minotaur", "50,000 Unstoppable Watts" and "Let a Poor Man Be" on board, this record will scratch that particular itch borne by anyone who's gotten into these hard-working roustabouts in the last twelve or thirteen years. It's CLUTCH with an extra dollop of hardscrabble blues, just that little bit more raw and dusty, with the well-worn grooves of a band well into their stride and showing no sign of taking it easy any time soon.

that it's something of a halfway house between their more recent blues oriented material, and the heavier, edgier releases of the mid to late 90's, BUT where are the songs? I appreciate the fact that it's a little heavier, and that the rhythm section has been given a swift kick in the butt--weakest part of Beatle St IMO. The 'space' in the recording is effective too. Yet at the same time, the songs just don't stick, and Fallon's lyrics are really obvious and boring and lack their usual imaginative flair.

7/10 IMO.

been a clutch fan since Transnational, and i can safely say that C! has most definitley gone downhill since tyrant. They used to be a band that derived there sound from many different influences that created that unique and one-of-a-kind C! sound. Now they sound like some cheap wannabe blues knock off band that you can see at the local tavern. i realize that blues has always been a predominant influence in their sound, but this new crap suffers from the overuse of it and ultimate lack of their previous influences.

And what the hell is up with Neil's monotone and stale vocal delivery on every single song? I remember when Neil could implement a different and creative vocal style from track to track on the same album (i.e.-Elephant Riders.) gone are the witty and ironic satirical obsevations within the lyrics that used to crack me up and give me goosebumps at the same time. Hope these guys return to form on the next release, but i wont hold my breath. I give this one 2 stars for the only decent songs on this crappy release-Motherless Child & Minotaur. Before you mindless fanboys get into an uproar and start slobbering all over yourselves to insult me, don't bother. My opiniopn is the only one that counts, besides 99% of you dont know dick about music anyways.

I dunno dude. I disagree.

Personally, I think the latest 2 albums have a lot better than Blast Tyrant.

It took me 2 or 3 listens but Strange Cousins has become one of my favourite albums. Saw them a few nights ago and the new stuff killed, Freakonomics and Abe Lincoln are awesome live.

Although, Blast Tyrant is fucking killer.

is definitely my favorite album by these guys. i don't know how people find blast tyrant so catchy, for me is more like a straight rock record, it lacks the quirky, off the wall stuff clutch can pull of, and that's what clutch do best: being a totally different band

agree totally on Fallon's lyrics and delivery, and criticised his lyrics above. Even his delivery is slack. 50,000 Unstoppable Watts is a prime example. It sounds like he is trying hard to recapture that old Clutch feel but is utterly failing. And on other tracks like 'Struck Down', he just doesn't bring the necessary heat. In the old days, a track like that would build into a huge chorus, but instead it just falls flat, and Fallon, more than ever, perhaps for the first time ever, is a huge liability.

I'll give Salt props though. There are some interesting guitar tones and melodies on here that recall the adventurous nature of their mid to late 90's work, but it's not nearly enough to save it from being average overall.

Then again, I love all of Clutch's albums.

I agree with Keith, in that this one flows amazingly well from front to back ... with my favorite tunes early in the batch.

Best track: Minotaur

Surprised to see some fans knocking the newer albums. To me, few bands are as consistent as Clutch has been and continues to be.

For the record, 'Blast Tyrant' remains my favorite Clutch release.

I saw this band when they opened on the Chaos A.D. tour. They were okay; nothing spectacular. A few years later I started hearing all kinds of hype for them. I checked them out again, but again wasn't impressed. Recently, my girlfriend (who is not much of a metal fan) has been extolling the virtues of Clutch. Apparently, one of her friends is a huge fan. I listened to some of their newest stuff, and... nothing. I don't think they're bad, I just can't get into them as more than background music.

I think that this album is pretty solid. It took me a few spins to really get into it, but I think it pretty good. My only problem with it is that the I thought most of the songs were missing that hammond organ they'd been using on the past few releases, especially because they are a bluesier band now. Maybe it was a conscious decision, but I thought the organ gave their songs another nice layer.

Following these fellas since the EP of Passive Restraints and this is the weakest of their regular releases. It's ok, but just isn't memorable.

That being said, I highly recommend the re-issue of Slow Hole to China, that collection is stellar, strong, and HEAVY, just like Clutch oughtta be.

Clutch's worst album is still Transnational..... IMO. I know i'll cop some flack for it, but fuck it, closely followed by 'Pure Rock Fury'. SCFTW is nothing overly special but i prefer it to TSL and PRF, easily.

was a big fan since Pitch folk Impetous they were a great band but have gone down hill since elephant riders
actually you could see it coming after elephant riders i tried hard to embrace the change in this band but to me they just become a joke, loved the way they changed it up from transnational to the S/T elephant riders was ok at best
released way too many albums too quickly and to me they just become another shitty sounding stoner band, that unpredictable feel of listening to a new clutch album has gone yrs and yrs ago, actually
if your an old school fan you know what i mean after listening to Trans then going to S/T, listening to the S/T after Trans was like what the fuck!! but was among the most brilliant 55 mins ar so of brilliant music i had heard in fucking yrs it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand!!

The Bakerton Group is really where I'd go for this kind of groove. The same players, minus the vocals, with a bit more groove. Still a good enough album from what I've heard. 8/10 seems about right.

...and coming in on the tail end....but here goes:

Clutch is one of those bands that if it weren't for my illegal downloading....I'd have never discovered them. AND I did go purchase this on the first day....even though I stole it weeks before hand. This is not a band cd IMO, but it's definately showing their age a bit. They're for sure not the kickass hardcore band that at times they used to be.
Someone else above mentioned that the songs just aren't there. And I gotta agree with that just a bit. I like it....I just like other music from them better. I always go back to The Elephant Riders.
Neil kicks ass no doubt. And I'll be a first day purchaser of their next cd as well.

Clutch's self-titled is a stone cold 90s classic that was hot at the time, but gets no love now. In fact, they will never have an album of that quality (or popularity) ever again. Not if they keep pumping out these half-assed blues records. Clutch needs to start smoking pot again, really.

I remember when everyone at my high school was jamming to "Spacegrass". Awesome band.

It's their most successful album, from a sales point of view, i believe, but you are right, nobody really talks about it now. Shame. It's such a great album. Definitely one of the rock highlights of the mid 90s.
