I suppose "retro" is in the eye of the beholder, but Ohio metal warlords SKELETONWITCH have never seemed like a regurgitated history lesson in denim and bullet belts to me. They get lumped in with the likes of TOXIC HOLOCAUST and MUNICIPAL WASTE primarily because their metal is so elemental, I guess. But what they're really doing is building from the same basic foundations as the "big four" did, only they're doing it while steeped in the drunken wisdom and nerd-hoarding record collections of metal disciples (read: geeks) right here in the modern day.

Thus, you get songs that could have come out in the age of "Bonded By Blood", but with black metal-derived picking; you get barked Euro-thrash vocals that delve into death metal burbling and blackened croaks; you get melodic death metal accents over head-down thrash bludgeon... and above all, you get a very direct and live-sounding metal assault. Think about it... no band tours as much as SKELETONWITCH without developing, very quickly, a keen sense of what's gonna work on stage, in less-than-ideal sonic conditions, playing through beer-raped monitors with no soundcheck. That's where a lot of the old-school vibe comes from — not a conscious mimicking of the Noise and Combat catalog circa 1985, but a lean, focused songwriting approach that lays on the metal with maximum kill efficiency, and not a second or note wasted. This is primal, from-the-gut stuff, and it does a lot of damage in its thirty-five minute gallop across the wasteland.

If I had a complaint, it'd be that the songs on "Breathing the Fire" seem a little less memorable than SKELETONWITCH has bestowed upon us in the past — too much of the record goes by without really grabbing the listener, placing all the classic metal elements on the table without really knocking any of it out of the park. It's a good record, but perhaps a step down from 2007's "Beyond the Permafrost" — hopefully a minor hiccup in what will be a storied career, and not the inevitable result of too much time away from the rehearsal room at home. A 7.5 when you're three beers in and feeling less picky, a 6 on those days when everything starts to sound the same.

Saw these guys open for Children of Bodom. Can they play...yes. Did they listen to Diamond Head and Slayer...check and check. Are they tight? Yes. Are they boring as hell. Yup.

Saw these guys and yes they can play. Have their albums and I am a big fan. Maidenesque melodious touches with a very cool, blackened thrash sound. Boring?!? I don't think so!

believe what I'm reading here. I saw these guys open for Bodom/BDM in Kitchener and they killed it. Me and my buddy specifically went early to make sure we saw their entire set. They have a great stage show, sound awesome and they are very cool to hang out with. We partied with them and BDM for 45-60 mins after the set and it was great. Very appreciative to their fans. awesome.

These guys are writing great music. They have a realistic production and blackened thrash is great in my mind.

If these guys loaded up and plugged in your backyard, they would sound like do on the album and that's a huge bonus for me. That's what music used to be like. They write songs, not just pieces clipped together and put on myspace. Honest heavy metal....i like it.

Does it sound retro? yes, but that doesn't mean they are boring. It's a throwback to what metal used to be and it's fresh in a metal world where most releases are extremely over produced (in my opinion). I personally think these guys kill and i'm happy to see them land big tours and get some exposure.

Breathing the fire like every album, should not be rated. a 7/10 for one fan could be a 3/10 for another etc..it's great music and well written music. Support these guys.

I really felt Beyond the Permafrost was an incredible release. Every song was catchy both musically and vocally, and I can hum every tune in my head. It's rare to find a band that can create such a memorable release w/tons of catchy riffs and vocals. So I set the bar high for this release, maybe a little too high. This is 100% Skeletonwitch, no doubt, but it's not as memorable as BTP. the first thing that is noticeable is the production has a much rawer sound than the last cd, not as polished and has a more underground feeling. I feel this detracts from material, as it's not as punchy sounding as BTP. The other big draw back, for me, is the fact that the songs are not that memorable. Sure their are a fair amount of tunes that rock like the awesome opener submit to the suffering, stand fight and die, crushed beyond dust and strangled by unseen hands, but more often than not I zoned out of the songs. I got the preorder last thursday and have listened to it half a dozen times already and the songs just don't stick out that much. Muscianship is top notch and this band still cranks. I think this is more of a grower, as an album, but when something does not hit me hard the first several times I ususually relegate it to the pile of cds I will listen to down the road. The band claim this is their most brutal release. It's about the same as BTP. Blast beats woven in between thrashier parts. I love the vocals. The black metal coupled w/the sinister deep death growls are better on this release, I feel. Anyway if you like this band you will like this, for me, it's just not as striking as BTP.

...these guys live twice and they absolutely killed it at both shows. Hung out with them for a while the first time I saw them and you couldn't ask for a nicer, more down-to-Earth band than this.

Both albums are strong, fast, and viscious. Some of the best stuff out there these days.

I hvae had this album for about two weeks now and I still have it in rotation but I have to agree with th reviewer that it's a step bac from Permafrost. Still though, it's worth owning and it kics ass. I don't know what it is but I think that these guys are special. I don't have that feeling very often so I hope that they take some time on the next one and deliver a classic. Still a good effort though. 7.5 for me..

I don't get how these guys get lumped in with all the "retro thrash" bands. They have thrash elements but they bring a lot more to the table the usual suspects within that sub genre.

And I thought this album was actually better then "Beyond the Permafrost" I thought it showed a considerable step forward as songwriters. The songs are short and to the point, but the aggressive assault and melodies show that a band doesn't have to put out bloated songs to be memorable.

Everything is very to the point, but it doesn't lose any points for scope because of it. I think some of the fans disapointed with it will like it more with repeated listens.

I gave it a 10 just because I'm so shocked that a newer metal band is that good. I also rate high on blabbermouth because of all the "blabberbitches" that just show up to rag on everything.

Not trying to start anything with anyone, but how do you zone out from songs that average about 2 1/2 mins.? I'm going to guess you hate Opeth?

Good album and better than the album prior if you ask me. I know most will disagree and I do not care at all. This is a solid effort by a very up and coming band. A solid 8/10 IMO...stay metal guys!!

Have to agree with the poster who said that these guys aren't really a retro thrash outfit (and that is a good thing). They are waayy more creative for that label. I am glad to see some of the positive posts - they frickin' deserve them!

I've given this disc some time and many spins, and I can't believe you gave this album a 7... are we listening to the same band? I even showed it to some of my friends, real metalheads, we've been listening to this shit for 15+ years, and most of them went out and got it immediatly. Great metal for old school metalheads, the ones who are still open minded towards newer metal bands anyway. This album will rip your face off and vomit down your throat... in a good way!
