Gather 'round, ye children and punters with short memories, and recall a time when HYPOCRISY was the flagship band of their label, and Peter Tägtgren wasn't the go-to producer for Europe's most extreme bands, but just a guy who liked aliens and ridiculously catchy (but brutal) death metal tunes. Go take a look at the discography of this band — their stylistic changes, from "Penetralia" to "The Fourth Dimension" to the self-titled 1999 album to "Catch-22", and their sheer work ethic at the time, crammed an entire career, and a big ol' chunk of death metal's evolution, into one monstrous decade or so of hard work and creativity.

But after the mixed reaction to "Catch-22", with his success as a producer and frontman of the band PAIN looming, Peter Tägtgren seemed to bail on the group that put him on the map, and the metal world — ever on the prowl for the next thing — wasted no time in forgetting HYPOCRISY's heavy hand in creating where we are today. Well, four years after their last album, "Virus", it's time for a none-too-gentle reminder. The title of this album is certainly appropriate — it's like a sampler box of HYPOCRISY's storied career, and no matter what era is your favorite, there's something here for you.

Want that big, expansive self-titled sound, with the midtempo chugging drums, chiming cinematic black-metal-esque chords and Tägtgren's anthemic bellowing about all manner of X-Files crap? "No Tomorrow" and "Global Domination" will satisfy you mightily. Rather get your head torn off with a thrash beat and some death metal aggression? "Valley of the Damned" blasts out of the box with punishing fervor and some wicked low vocals. Even better, "Taste the Extreme Divine" and "Weed Out the Weak" are baseball bats to the knees, with brutal blasts and pissed-off energy cranked up to eleven.

Don't look for the clean vocals from the "Catch-22" era — there's melody to be had here, but it's housed in the bricks-and-barbed-wire mix and aggressive riffing of a fired up, rejuvenated, and unabashedly death metal band. Even at their hookiest ("Sky's Falling Down", "Solar Empire") or most dramatic ("No Tomorrow"), there's a rough edge and a massive wall-of-sound production steamrolling everything in its path. And that's a good thing — "A Taste of Extreme Divinity" is an intense listen, insistent and pummeling, yet dynamic enough to stay memorable.

If there has to be a gripe, you could say that the songs here are a bit verse-chorus-verse formulaic — Peter Tägtgren could, and possibly does, write shit like this in his sleep. But when it goes down this good and inspires Pavlovian headbanging on a neck-wrecking level, it's hard to quibble with the results. If you like your death metal midtempo and accessible, but heavier than a lead coffin lid, with occasional forays into doomy anthems and blasting raveups, HYPOCRISY is your band — and they have been for the past decade and a half, whether we all remembered it or not. Even if "A Taste of Extreme Divinity" doesn't put them back on top of the mountain, it'll at least serve as a reminder to the world of the importance of this underrated band's place in metal.

I think the review sums it up, but is a little generous in the rating. Sure, you have the tried and true Hypocrisy/Abyss studios sound, you have the melodic songs, the skin peeling heavy songs, and even a slow song towards the albums end, but overall, it simply far from thier worst, but definately not thier finest moment. A great album for long time fans, so if you like Hypocrisy old and/or new, I would recommend giving it a few spins, as it's most certainly a grower.

Best songs-Valley Of The Damned, Hang Em High, Solar Empire
Possible fillers-Global Domination, The Quest

I agree with Dethdyde69. The score seems a little inflated. Bergman should swap his review with the one he gave Virus to this one and vice versa and all would be correct.

7/10 for me. Definately listenable but only 3 or 4 songs really stand out. I think Virus was a lot better in that respect.

After I read the comment of Nespithe I checked out the review on Virus. What the hell ??? This Keith must be the biggest moron on earth. How can the same person give this one an 8 and 'Virus' a 6 ? Does this guy actualy listen to albums or does he just look at the songtitles.

I have to be honest, I actually thought 'Alive' and 'The Quest' were two of the better songs on the record, and niether were mentioned. Odd.

One of the best death metal albums released this year, gave it a 9. Also, would Nuclear Blast be so kind as to put more stuff on their "Special Edition" albums than 1 or 2 cover tracks for an extra £5? A DVD or anything else instead wouldn't be bad either.

Warning to those who are expecting Virus II, this is a pretty big departure. Gone is the catchy heaviness and death metal heft (except the title track and the second track). In comes the boring trilly melodic rehashed later era In Flames riffs.

Sigh...I guess they had too many non death metal fans on their bandwagon and got ripped for Virus, so they reverted back.

Didn't much like Hypocrisy prior to Virus, so I'm not sure why I'm so suprised by this release. Back off the bandwagon I go.

Great cd by a great band. It is a nice mixture of all eras of the band and it is good to hear the heaviness and brutality of the first few albums on there.

I think this disc is fucking excellent... one of my top 10 for the year. It's the best thing they've put out since the self-titled album.

Actually there are bonus tracks for this album. You can only get them though if you order the "mail-order only" edition through cmdistro.com. It comes in a slipcase with the old school logo. The bonus tracks are a b-side and two demos of songs on the album. It's $13 +$4 shipping. I ordered the package where you get the hoodie and the CD($42 +$4 shipping). They only made 1,000 copies of the mail-order edition, so if you want it make sure you order it!! Other than that you'll only find the 11 track album in stores.

Don't worry plenty of bands put out death metal that stays in the same tempo, and doesn't do anything beyond that basic riff. You'll find somebody else I'm sure. How you can compare Tagtren's melodic style to In Flames is beyond baffling.

Nothing special, but not bad either. The high points are great, but then it will lead into the lame repetitive sound that Hypocrisy is known for all slow and over produced. No where near as good as Virus, but not so horrible either. 7/10 IMO

I am an all album Hypocrisy fan, in fact, they are in my top 3 metal bands of all time. If you have ever bothered to listen to this band's cd's you probably know that each cd has a different vibe and production value. They are not like Slayer, and do not put out the same album and music for a hundred albums. One thing each album has for sure is pure intensity. I find that this becomes more clear with each listening of each cd, as lyrics begin to unfold and add to the atmosphere. This cd is no different in that respect! I was a little disappointed at first, but now I realize that it kicks ass! It is not Virus (as many people had hoped for it seems), but is both worse and better in ways (I know, I'm sorry). It is less catchy, and harder to grasp at the beginning, but like their last album or any Hypocrisy album, the more you listen, the more you realize that the dynamics of Hypocrisy and the fierceness of their lyrics and sound play a perfect role. I would say that fans of ONLY Virus, will probably not like this album much, and if you expect a more approachable Hypocrisy (like Virus showed), you will not find it. However, if you like older Hypocrisy, or do not require your metal to be shallow and instantly able to be memorized, give this album a chance and listen to it a few times and LOUDLY! Songs unfold with time and become just as great as any Hypocrisy song.

Also, I would like to see Hypocrisy headline in the US more, and not be an opening act to bands that are not even a fraction as good. Just had to let that one out. Thanks!

At first I would have rated the album 8.0 to... but after some listening, it easily deserve a 9.0.

Not their best, but easily something that few band can achieve.

haven't released a decent album in 10 years IMO. All the stuff i've heard this decade is sterile and lifeless, and completely unimaginative.

This album almost borders on 'deathcore' at times.

no thanks! ;-)

You don't know what "deathcore" means, do you? Either that or you're retarded. If you think Hypocrisy has been sterile in the last ten years I can't imagine what you think of most of the shit out there.

Great compillation of different Hypocrisy tunes, anticrhistian, a little bit gore, abductions and supernatural stuff, I really like it more than Catch 22 even the rerecorded, not better than Into the Abyss and Virus, but I give a 9/10.

Peter Tâgtgren rules, Hypocrisy Rules!!

I actually tend to read all the user comments as a general consensus than read the one, probably-biased, overly compensated retard review that Blabbermouth/Roadrunner gives. If its not Roadrunner, well its not getting a 9 or 10 thats for sure. And if its Roadrunner, it can't get lower than an 8, that would be blasphemy.

LoL. Ha. It's weird though, everytime I say something bad about Roadrunner/Blabbermouth... I always get censored... I hope this doesn't again...
