3 INCHES OF BLOOD Comments On Former Bassist's Passing
- Oct. 2, 2009
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada metallers 3 INCHES OF BLOOD have issued a statement regarding the passing of their former bassist Brian Redman.
Redman died last Saturday night (September 26) in a motor vehicle accident near his home in Tacoma, Washington.
Commented the band: "We are shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of our friend and former bandmate, Brian Redman.
"Brian was an outgoing and charismatic person who was great friends with most people he met. We couldn't help but smile or laugh when he was around. He had such a likable personality but also had a knack for putting serious things into perspective.
"While in the band, Brian played a big part. He joined the band shortly after signing a big record deal, and endured the turmoil that followed after recording our 'Advance and Vanquish' album. For a time, the band's future was uncertain, but Brian was unwavering in his desire to play this music with us. He was loved by many and enjoyed life to the fullest.
"Goodbye, Brian, our fallen brother. You will be greatly missed."
According to Weekly Volcano's "Spew" blog, Redman recently returned to Tacoma after living in Southern California for a short stint.
Before he left for California, he tended bar at Doyle's Public House in Tacoma and fronted the rock band the DIRTY KNOCKERS.
"We have lost a friend, family member, lover, musician and all-around good person," posted Doyle's Public House co-owner Russ Heaton on his bar's web site.
Brian Redman was in 3 INCHES OF BLOOD between 2004 and 2006 and appeared on the band's 2004 album, "Advance and Vanquish" (Roadrunner).

AEROSMITH's JOE PERRY: 'I'd Like To See Us Play For Another 10 Years'
- Oct. 2, 2009
Rick Massimo of The Providence Journal recently conducted an in-depth interview with AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry.
Regarding AEROSMITH's future, Perry said the band is committed to do four shows in late October and early November in Abu Dhabi and Hawaii. "It remains to be seen whether Steven [Tyler, vocals] will be well enough to do those dates; I think he will be … I know he wants to be."
After that, he said, "I think we're going to have to take at least six months off, maybe even longer, to get everybody kind of settled down, let a lot of this [expletive] die down, a lot of the bad press wash away, as it does, and then start up again. And make a really great studio record. We know the fans want it; I know it's what I want, and it's what the other guys want. And then do a tour.
"That's what I hope happens. But in the meantime, I want to be touring with my band."
He seemed to go back and forth between confidence and wariness: "I'd like to see us play for another 10 years. But we're all getting older, and everybody has different lives. But I know that everyone loves playing together. This tour, we were probably playing better together than we've ever played.
"But either way, I'm up for anything, and that's why I can't sit still, and I have a solo album ready to go. And I don't know what the other guys are gonna do while we're waiting, but I wasn't going to waste any time."

HATEBREED: 'Saw VI' Re-Edit Of 'In Ashes They Shall Reap' Video Available
- Oct. 2, 2009
The "Saw VI" re-edited version of HATEBREED's video for the song "In Ashes They Shall Reap" can be viewed below.
HATEBREED, LACUNA COIL, MUSHROOMHEAD, CHIMAIRA, SUICIDE SILENCE, SHADOWS FALL and TYPE O NEGATIVE are among the featured bands on the "Saw VI" soundtrack, which is scheduled for release on October 20 through Trustkill Records.
In "Saw VI", special agent Strahm is dead, and detective Hoffman has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw's legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.
What started out as a "little" indie horror movie back in 2004 has turned into a juggernaut go-for-the-throat franchise so gruesome you want to turn away, yet so compelling you just can't. And fittingly enough, the movie soundtracks have always been amicable counterparts assaulting the senses in a fashion that would make Jigsaw proud.
Trustkill Records' Josh Grabelle said, "We are stoked about this soundtrack as we've managed to place songs from some of the most exciting hard rock and metal bands in the scene on this one. We are all huge fans of the 'Saw' movies and are ready to knock this one out of the park!"
Artists' Addiction Soundtracks' Jonathan Platt says of the "Saw VI" soundtrack: "We feel that we have put together a collection of songs that really mirrors the chaos onscreen. All of our acts are big fans of the 'Saw' series and were excited to be a part of the soundtrack and I think that energy really comes across."
Split into three different movements, the CD's track listing is as follows:
6 Chances:
01. HATEBREED - "In Ashes They Shall Reap" 02. LACUNA COIL - "The Last Goodbye" * 03. IT DIES TODAY - "Reckless Abandon" 04. MUSHROOMHEAD - "The Very Many Few" * 05. CHIMAIRA - "Warpath" * 06. DANKO JONES - "Code Of The Road"
6 Lessons:
07. SUICIDE SILENCE - "Genocide" (Saw VI Remix) * 08. MEMPHIS MAY FIRE - "Ghost In The Mirror" 09. OUTBREAK - "The Countdown Begins" * 10. SHADOWS FALL - "Still I Rise" (Saw VI Remix) * 11. TYPE O NEGATIVE - "Dead Again" 12. CONVERGE - "Dark Horse"
6 Choices:
13. KITTIE - "Cut Throat" 14. NITZER EBB - "Never Known" * 15. EVERY TIME I DIE - "Roman Holiday" 16. MY MY MISFIRE - "The Sinatra" 17. THE FLOOD - "Lethal Injection" 18. JAMES BROTHERS - "More Than A Sin"
Bonus Digital Tracks:
19. THE 69 EYES - "We Own The Night" 20. VENTANA - "Watch Us Burn" 21. MISS MAY I - "Forgive & Forget"
* Previously unreleased

Former ALICE IN CHAINS Bassist MIKE STARR Arrested On Drug Charge
- Oct. 2, 2009
RadarOnline.com reports that former ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Starr was arrested Monday (September 28) in Los Angeles on a drug charge.
Starr is currently being held at the Bauchet Street Jail in downtown L.A..
His bail is set at $100,000 and he is due for arraignment at the Pasadena Superior court on October 14.
Earlier this year, Starr was selected as a cast member for the third season of the VH1 reality series "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew". Hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky, the season will consist of eight episodes that follow the real-life experiences of celebrity patients undergoing detoxification and treatment at the Pasadena Recovery Center. Joining Starr are country singer Mindy McCready, actress Mackenzie Phillips ("One Day at a Time"), former Hollywood Madame Heidi Fleiss, NBA great Dennis Rodman, Lisa D'Amato ("America's Next Top Model"), former Miss United States Teen Kari Ann Peniche and Joey Kovar ("Real World Hollywood").
The new season of "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" is scheduled to premiere in January.
Starr joined the New York City-based ALICE IN CHAINS tribute band FACELIFT on stage on May 9, 2009 at Sullivan Hall in New York City to perform three songs — "Man In The Box", "Would?" and "Them Bones". According to the members of FACELIFT, Starr "was in great shape and form. [His] performance was flawless and this just about squashes all rumors of his prior poor health condition. The crowd response was amazing as crowd-surfing and high-decibel applause was present."
Back in April 2005, Seattle's KIROTV.com reported that Mike Starr was arrested in Seattle for vandalizing a car.
A man named Phillip told KIROTV.com that he spotted a man pulling the hood ornament off his vehicle.
He said he recognized the man as Michael Christopher Starr and called police. Starr was arrested for "investigation of property destruction and theft."
Starr, 43, a founding member of ALICE IN CHAINS, had been in legal trouble before in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. His past charges include DUI, reckless driving, and various drug charges.
Back in April 1994, Starr was sentenced to 30 days in the Houston jail for misdemeanor drug possession. Starr was arrested at Houston's Intercontinental Airport while trying to check in for a flight to Los Angeles with a suitcase he had stolen from the baggage claim area. Authorities searched him and found he was carrying marijuana.

TONY IOMMI To Guest On BRUCE DICKINSON's Radio Show
- Oct. 2, 2009
Legendary heavy metal guitarist Tony Iommi (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH) will be IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson's guest on Friday, October 23 during Bruce's weekly BBC 6 Music radio program, dubbed "The Bruce Dickinson Friday Rock Show". Listen to the broadcast live via the Internet between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight) U.K. time at BBC.co.uk.
The management for HEAVEN & HELL vocalist Ronnie James Dio released a statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET on August 27 in an attempt to "quash any rumors that [the group] have broken up." The statement read in part, "Tony Iommi has to have surgery on his hand and [needs] some down time for recovery. Therefore DIO [the band] will be performing some dates in the U.K. and Europe in November/December during this time off. HEAVEN & HELL are already making plans for dates next year."
In a recent interview with The Aquarian Weekly, Iommi stated about his upcoming surgery, "I've got to have an operation on my hand, and that's sort of a major thing I need to get done and I've been putting it off now. So we're going to have some time off while I get that done. That'll be a bit of a break, I think. Not for everybody, but it'll be some time off from touring for me for sure."
When asked what happened to his hand, Iommi replied, "The cartilage is gone from the thumb in my fingering hand. It's been like that now, to be honest, for a year and I've been taking anti-inflammatories and all sorts of stuff to try and calm it down, but it's inevitable I've got to have the operation because the bone is rubbing on the bone. Funny enough, I talked to Eddie Van Halen this morning, because he's had the same sort of problem, so I'm seeing him to have a chat about what happened to him. He thinks it's very successful, so we'll see."

MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Interviewed On 'Black Night Meditations'; Audio Available
- Oct. 2, 2009
WSCA 106.1 FM's "Black Night Meditations" metal radio show conducted an interview with MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine on Tuesday, September 29. Topics discussed include Dave's thoughts on metal music and culture, record label support, the marketing of the band's new album, "Endgame", and the possibility of another MEGADETH CD.
The entire 28-minute interview can be downloaded at this location. It is available for streaming using the audio player below.
"Black Night Meditations" is a four-hour metal radio show focusing on black, death, thrash, folk, power and traditional metal. It broadcasts every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. EST on WSCA 106.1 FM in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
MEGADETH's new album, "Endgame", sold 45,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 9 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD shifted 8,200 units in Canada to land at No. 4 on the country's official chart.
MEGADETH's previous CD, "United Abominations", opened with around 54,000 copies in the U.S. to debut at No. 8. This was more than the 46,000 first-week tally registered by its predecessor, "The System Has Failed" (which landed at No. 18 on The Billboard 200 chart), and was a bit less than the 61,000 opening number of 2001's "The World Needs A Hero" (No. 16).
"Endgame" was recorded at MEGADETH's brand new, self-built studio in San Marcos, California — Vic's Garage — which was named after the legendary and iconic Vic Rattlehead character. The CD was helmed by Mustaine and British producer Andy Sneap (EXODUS, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD).

ALICE IN CHAINS: Behind-The-Scenes Footage From 'Check My Brain' Video Shoot Available
- Oct. 2, 2009
Behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the "Check My Brain" video, the first official single from ALICE IN CHAINS' much-anticipated new album, "Black Gives Way To Blue", can be viewed below. The clip, which was helmed by U2 and WHITE STRIPES video director Alex Courtes, premiered on September 14.
According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, "Black Gives Way To Blue" is on track to sell between 130,000 and 140,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD will likely land in the Top 5 of next week's The Billboard 200 chart, behind latest albums from PARAMORE, MARIAH CAREY, BARBRA STREISAND and BREAKING BENJAMIN.
Following its last, self-titled record in 1995, the once-mighty Seattle-based act went into a long period of inactivity, partially due to the drug problems of singer Layne Staley. Staley died in 2002, but it was another four years until the three remaining members of the band, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney, first regrouped for a benefit show and then officially returned with new frontman William DuVall.
Cantrell told The Pulse of Radio that with the completion of a new album — something he wasn't sure would ever happen — he thinks ALICE IN CHAINS is back to stay. "You know, the possibilities are limitless," he said. "The cool thing is, this band is alive, and we're alive. And we've had an amazing life. And we've lost some people along the way, and we've had to change, and we've had to dig within ourselves to answer some very serious questions about life. It's been a real meaningful journey, and we're really dedicated to going through the process, you know, and seeing what life has to offer."
ALICE IN CHAINS recruited pop legend Elton John to contribute piano to the CD's title track, which is written in tribute to Staley.
William DuVall had played with his own group, COMES WITH THE FALL, as well as in Jerry Cantrell's solo band, before joining up with ALICE IN CHAINS in 2006.
"Black Gives Way to Blue" was recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, RUSH) at the Northridge, California studio of FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl.
Quality fan-filmed video footage of NAPALM DEATH's September 26, 2009 concert in Munich, Germany can be viewed below (courtesy of "eblinternational").
"Time Waits For No Slave", the new album from NAPALM DEATH, entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 95. The CD, which was released in the U.S. on February 10 via Century Media Records, was recorded with producer Russ Russell. Drums were tracked at Parlour Studios in Kettering and guitars, bass and vocals were done at Foel Studios in Wales. The band then returned to Parlour for the mixing sessions.
NAPALM DEATH vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway told Rock Sound magazine about "Time Waits For No Slave", "Each album appears to have got progressively better and better. There was no great master plan, really. We're just a very organic band, very spontaneous, and we just try to write the best songs possible. If there is anything in the back of our minds, then I think it's that we always try to make each album differ without losing the thread of what should be there and I think we've done that with this album."
SODOM, WATAIN, CAPTAIN CLEANOFF, CAPITALIST CASUALTIES, MAGRUDERGRIND, OBLITERATION, SULACO, PUTRESCENCE, FANG and VERBAL ABUSE have been confirmed for next year's Maryland Deathfest, set to take place May 28-30 at an as-yet-undisclosed venue in Baltimore.
The concept of Maryland Deathfest is simple: to bring to the United States the best and most extreme bands the underground has to offer. Never conforming to trends, or being limited by genre restrictions, Maryland Deathfest is a showcase of what extreme music, both new and old, is capable of. With an emphasis on diversity, the festival brings together the very best death metal, grindcore, black metal, thrash, experimental and hardcore bands from all around the world. With bands from all over the U.S. and Canada, and exclusive fly ins and rare appearances from some of the most in demand bands from Europe, Australia, and Japan, the diversity of the lineup is only surpassed by the diversity of Maryland Deathfest's rabid fan base, who annually travel from all over the world for a weekend of fun and music.
Since Maryland Deathfest's inception in 2003, festival organizers Ryan and Evan have continued to strive to bring together some of the most legendary bands in the scene and some of the most talked about up-and-coming bands in the underground for an unparalleled experience. Combining the DIY attitude of two young metal fans who are actually part of the scene instead of trying to exploit it, with a refreshing professional touch, Maryland Deathfest is year after year given high marks for being one of the best-run and most organized festivals around.

LANDMINE MARATHON: New Album Title Announced
- Oct. 2, 2009
Phoenix death/grind quintet LANDMINE MARATHON has set "Sovereign Descent" as the title of its new album, due in early 2010 via Prosthetic Records. The CD was recorded at guitarist Ryan Butler's Arcane Digital Recording Studios, where he's recorded past efforts from the band, as well as MISERY INDEX, PHOBIA, THE FUNERAL PYRE and many more. The album will be mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (CONVERGE, HATEBREED, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN) in New Windsor, New York. The cover art is being handled by acclaimed artist Dan Seagrave, who's previously worked with ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, MORBID ANGEL, SUFFOCATION and many, many more.
The band documented the recording sessions via video blogs which can be seen at this location.
Commented LANDMINE MARATHON: "We have put a lot of hard work into writing and recording this album. We all agree that it is some of LANDMINE's strongest material so far, both musically and lyrically. Ryan really went above and beyond with the recording and mixing process. Having the opportunity to work with two people who we feel are legends — Dan Seagrave and Alan Douches — is a huge honor. We look forward to sharing some of the final results soon and even more so playing these songs live on the road!"
LANDMINE MARATHON, whose sound has been compared to early Earache acts such as BOLT THROWER, CARCASS, and NAPALM DEATH, released two full-lengths on Level Plane — "Wounded" and "Rusted Eyes Awake". The band has shared the stage with the likes of TRAGEDY, KYLESA, SAVIOURS, BOOK OF BLACK EARTH, COLISEUM and many more.
LANDMINE MARATHON was founded in 2004 by bassist Matt Martinez, drummer Mike Pohlmeier and vocalist Grace Perry, the latter of whom periodically blogs for Revolver's web site. Guitarist Ryan Butler joined in 2006; two years later, guitarist Dylan Thomas joined the fold.
Drummer Brann Dailor of Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON has scheduled the following signing sessions during the band's tour with DETHKLOK:
Oct. 10 - Rupps Drums - Denver, CO Oct. 12 - Explorers Percussion - Kansas City, MO Oct. 20 - Columbus Percussion - Columbus, OH Oct. 21 - Huber & Breese - Fraser, MI Oct. 30 - Sam Ash - New York City, NY Nov. 01 - Sam Ash - King Of Prussia, PA Nov. 07 - Drums 2 Go - Orlando, FL Nov. 13 - Strait Music Center - Austin, TX Nov. 16 - Hubbard's Music and More - Las Cruces, NM Nov. 19 - Sam Ash - Hollywood, CA
MASTODON recently confirmed that they are working with composer John Powell and director Jimmy Hayward on the score to "Jonah Hex", the comic-book Western/horror film starring Josh Brolin in the lead role, with support from John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Michael Fassbender and Michael Shannon. The movie is based on the DC comic series about a horribly scarred antihero who is "a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood."
MASTODON guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds makes a cameo appearance in the film, which is being directed by former Pixar animator Jimmy Hayward for a June 18, 2010 release.
In a May 2009 interview with Billboard.com, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor revealed that a film adaptation of the band's latest album, "Crack the Skye", is well within the realm of possibility — albeit not in production yet.
"Crack the Skye"'s seven songs, produced by Brendan O'Brien, weave together a conceptual story involving a quadriplegic, astral travel, Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes and the philosophies of Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin. "I think it's definitely the closest we've come to a fully cohesive story from start to finish," Dailor said.

"The concept is based on the ancient battle of Kurukshetra, focusing on the dialogue between two warriors, Arjuna and Krishna."
"Hymns from the Blazing Chariot' comes off the Singaporean metallers' new album, "Brahmavidya: Transcendental I", which was released earlier in the year via Vic Records. The CD was produced by Joshua G. Nair and Sean Loo and features fourteen tracks with a total running time of about 70 minutes.

Vinod has played in many bands before and has been known to us for almost eight years. We are looking forward to writing the new album and touring with him."
Added Vinod, "It is truly an honor to be chosen and be part of RUDRA, a pioneer metal band. The first extreme metal band I listened to that inspired me and made me believe it is possible for local Singaporeans to start a band and be successful. I've known the members for a while. And now being in the band, I'm excited to work with them. Thus looking forward to contribute my part in the upcoming albums."

RANDY RHOADS Tribute Concert 'Rhoadsfest' Scheduled For December
- Oct. 2, 2009
Original QUIET RIOT bass player Kelli Garni and Kelle Rhoads, brother of late OZZY OSBOURNE/QUIET RIOT guitarist Randy Rhoads, are among the musicians who will perform at the Rhoadsfest, set to take place December 6, 2009 at the Whisky A Go Go. Billed as "the best Randy Rhoads tribute show ever," Rhoadsfest will be attended by other members of Randy's family and will feature a performance by Kelle with RHOADS TO OZZ (said to be "the one true authorized Rhoads tribute band"). Six acts will play at the event, which will include special Randy Rhoads features and Rhoads original artifacts on display.
Garni recently launched a new social networking site, dubbed the RR Network, for fans of Randy Rhoads.
In 1982, Rhoads, the then-lead guitarist for OZZY OSBOURNE, and two others were killed at Flying Baron Estates, just outside Leesburg, Florida, when their small plane struck Osbourne's tour bus, then crashed into a mansion.

1349 Pulls Out Of Germany's DEVIL'S REVENGE FESTIVAL
- Oct. 2, 2009
Norwegian black metallers 1349 have cancelled their appearance at the Devil's Revenge Festival, set to take place October 3, 2009 at Alfred Fischer Halle in Hamm, Germany. The band says in a statement that it was forced to pull out of the event "due to severe organizational problems at the forefront of the event on the part of the responsible organizers." The group adds, "Everybody involved and the band tried its best and everything possible to solve the concerned issues, but unfortunately no agreement could be achieved. 1349 and Twisted Talent regret the latest proceedings and want to make sure that there will be no iteration of this situation."
An e-card for "Revelations Of The Black Flame", the new album from 1349, is available at this location. Released on June 2 via Candlelight Records, the CD — like "Hellfire" (2005) and "Beyond the Apocalypse" (2004) — was recorded at StudioStudio Nyhagen in Bøverbru, Norway, and was co-mixed by none other than Tom Gabriel Fischer of CELTIC FROST.
1349 released its third studio album, "Hellfire", in the U.S. in October 2005 via Candlelight Records.
Official Metallica.com footage from METALLICA's September 29, 2009 concert at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas — including clips of pre-show meet-and-greet and the actual performance — can be viewed below.
The band's setlist was as follows:
01. That Was Just Your Life 02. The End Of The Line 03. The Four Horsemen 04. Holier Than Thou 05. One 06. Broken, Beat And Scarred 07. Cyanide 08. Sad But True 09. The Unforgiven 10. All Nightmare Long 11. The Day That Never Comes 12. Master Of Puppets 13. Dyers Eve 14. Nothing Else Matters 15. Enter Sandman - - - - - - - - 16. Breadfan 17. Whiplash 18. Seek and Destroy
As previously reported, METALLICA set a record for largest paid attendance for all events ever at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with their two sold-out shows on September 19-20. The San Francisco Bay Area metal giants beat out the likes of KISS, UFC, CELINE DION and U2.
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told Nudge from Dayton, Ohio radio station 103.9 The X last month that fans should not expect a follow-up to last year's "Death Magnetic" album any time soon. Ulrich said that the group will most likely be touring through the end of 2010 before taking a break, and that work on a new record probably wouldn't begin until at least the second half of 2011. Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio something along the same lines when he was asked a similar question. "I wouldn't hold my breath," he said. "Do the math yourself, as I like to hear myself say, you know. You got another year on the road, and then you gotta, you know, breathe for a little while, then you gotta do it all over again. I'd love to put records out more often, but right now, I don't know what's gonna give, in between touring and having some chill time with the family and how long it takes to, you know, make these records."
The drummer did hint to Nudge that, while a full METALLICA album could be three or more years away, the band could join the ranks of artists who are releasing music in new formats. He explained, "The record itself is starting to be sort of an outdated format, so who knows . . . We're out of our record contract, so we could go back to HQ (METALLICA's headquarters in San Rafael, California) and record something and then we could put it up on our web site and whoever wanted to download it could download it."
METALLICA took six years between 1997's "Reload" and 2003's "St. Anger", although they did also issue a covers collection and live album during that time. But it was another five years before "Death Magnetic" came out in 2008.
