YNGWIE MALMSTEEN Parts Ways With DIMARZIO - Nov. 5, 2009
Legendary Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen is no longer a DiMarzio endorser. DiMarzio, the Staten Island, New York-based company that produces magnetic pickups for electric guitars, will continue to manufacture the pickups and guitar straps that Yngwie endorsed minus the YJM designation and, in some cases, with a change in the model name or part numbers.

* The DP217 (formerly the YJM) is now called the HS-4. Only the name has changed.

* The YJM ClipLock (DD2230YJM) and YJM Standard Guitar Strap (DD3310YJM), are now named the Cheetah ClipLock (DD2230CH) and Cheetah Standard Guitar Strap (DD3310CH). Only the names have changed.

* The pre-wired pickguard YJM Setup is now named the HS Setup and contains the HS-4 (formerly YJM) in the neck and middle positions and the HS-3 in the bridge position. Only the name has changed.

* The Yngwie Malmsteen Signature Cable has been discontinued.

Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force Records will release a compilation CD with a "big-surprise bonus track that is a unique song choice for the guitar god," according to a posting on Yngwie's MySpace page. More information will be made available soon.

Rising Force Records has begun releasing rare archival concert footage that many Malmsteen collectors will want to have. The first is Yngwie in Korea, which was madea available on October 13, 2009. This is the raw footage that was shot by the Korean media, and it features no bells and whistles.

Malmsteen in March released an all-instrumental acoustic album, "Angels Of Love", which contains rearrangements of his ballad songs played on acoustic guitar and string and choir arrangements only. It is a masterpiece showing the tender, delicate version of his classic songs as well as a new composition. Yngwie also released two DVDs via Rising Force Records in March — "Live Animal" and "Live In Budokan".

"Perpetual Flame", the latest full-length studio album from Malmsteen, was the first-ever Yngwie effort to be issued via Rising Force Records, It marked the debut of Malmsteen's new singer, ex-JUDAS PRIEST/ICED EARTH frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens.

Some thoughts -
1) the newer Yngwie strats, along with the bigger headstock (etc) also have deeper scallops and jumbo frets. The first gen signature Yngwie Strats had tiny frets and relatively shallow scalloped on the fretboard. Functionally the newer models are great but I personally prefer the first model's aesthetic.

2) I'm shocked that Yngwie is leaving DiMarzio... this is an endorsement that has been ongoing for longer than probably most BM readers have been alive. I think his endorsement predates even Vai/Satch. Curious to know why this happened.

(offtopic, but my vote for best DiMarzio pickup is the Norton.)

I like the name change, "Cheetah" sounds surprisingly close to "Cheater", doesn't it?

The video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Malmsteen Management"

That was the interview that Larry conducted with Yngwie in Anaheim, CA outside the convention center during 2008's NAMM convention.

"One word is spoken, and the silence breaks
Promises broken, as the heartache seeps in
Now I'm believing, all the things that i hear
Oh no more deceiving, cause i see you so clear
Wounds left to heal
Coldness I feel
Like ice through my veins
Bad blood-don't be bringing me down
Bad blood-can't put me in the ground
Bad blood-bitch you're not killing me
Bad blood-no other way it's gonna be
Your love is like prison, and i'm doing time
Waiting for freedom, while losing my mind
Too many reasons and to many lies
Now i'm through believin' you've opened my eyes
Bad blood-there's no one to blame
Bad blood-no more lying, no more pain
Bad blood-oh there's nothing left to say
Bad blood-it can't be no other way
Bad blood-don't be bringing me down
Bad blood-can't put me in the ground
Bad blood-oh there's nothing left to say
Bad, bad, bad blood."

a box of Krispy Kremes could've saved the deal!

hell, it was probably the company wanting to pull back on support and the rock star, wanting to buy another Ferrari, wanted more $$$.

How does he fit? He must have custom seats made, ala Formula 1.

That's on the same level as if he was leaving Fender. The Dimarzios have been a huge part of his sound.

Dimarzio make great pickups but I guess he became too expensive and didn't bring much sales to the table. Let's be real here, kids nowadays don't give much shit about him. And older players already knows which pickups Malmsteen uses. Maybe his ego got the best out of him finally.

Personally I'm more of a Seymour Duncan type of guy.

Im guessing the YJM stuff wasn't selling as well as they would have hoped, so when it came time renew the contract, DiMarzio decided not to continue production. I personally think Yngwie's tone has always sounded like paper-thin garbage, and now that there are guitarists that do what he does but better, its no surprise his signature shit isnt selling

I think they likely jacked up the costs and he got a cut of each one sold - Times being as they are, they likely want to keep all the dough, everyone needs to scrimp.

Yngwie's a totally fucking class act.

In response to Godless Endeaver, Yngwie's tone on perpetual is great! I haven't listened to him for ten years before this album came out and bought this when I heard Ripper was on it. This Album is outstanding with great guitar tone and songwriting.
