The band's second album, "No Guts, No Glory", is due for release on February 22. It was written in a disused Antipodean pub that the band all used to work in and had their first gig at. Recording took place in Chicago with Johnny K at the production helm and the result is currently being mixed by Mike Fraser at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver.
When asked what the record is about, Joel O'Keefe, the band's gregarious frontman, laughs, "It's about rock 'n' roll, women, fighting, and drinking!"
As previously reported, AIRBOURNE has been added to MÖTLEY CRÜE's "The Dead Of Winter" Canadian tour in January/February. Also appearing on the bill as "special guests" is THE JOE PERRY PROJECT.
"No Guts, No Glory" follows up the band's 2008-released debut, "Runnin' Wild", which went on to sell upwards of 250,000 units worldwide and earned the band heaps of critical accolades.
Bob Mitchell (THE BOB MITCHELL BAND, MIND ASSASSIN, ex-ATTACKER, VYNDYCATOR) has finished laying down the vocals for "Introducing... Sceptor", the debut single from the U.S./German metal band SCEPTOR. The sessions took place at Digi-Force Studio in Bayonne, New Jersey with engineer Frank Oquendo (THE BOB MITCHELL BAND guitarist).
"Introducing... Sceptor" will be issued in 2010 as a seven-inch vinyl single via High Roller Records.
Commented guitarist T. Black: "Yeah, vocals are done! We are speechless. Prepare for the attack! All we wanna say is the vocals are killer! Thank you, Bob!"
In other news, SCEPTOR has announced the addition of drummer Markus Schmitz to the group's ranks.
A European tour is in the works for sometime next year.
Fan-filmed video footage of SIRENIA's November 16, 2009 performance at Z7 in Pratteln, Switzerland as part of the "Beauty & The Beast Tour" (with ATROCITY, LEAVES' EYES, ELIS and STREAM OF PASSION) can be viewed below (courtesy of "lorenznightwish").
SIRENIA drummer Jonathan A. Perez is sitting out the "Beauty & The Beast Tour" in order to spend time with his wife and newborn child. His temporary replacement is Roland Navratil from DIGNITY.
"The 13th Floor", the latest album from SIRENIA, debuted at No. 149 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
"The 13th Floor" was released in Europe on January 23. The CD was tracked at Sound Suite Studios in France and Stargoth Studios in Norway while the mixing and mastering sessions took place at the Antfarm Studios in Denmark with Tue Madsen.
SIRENIA's video for the song "The Path To Decay" was shot in Gothenburg, Sweden with director Patric Ullaeus (DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL) of Revolver Film Company.
SIRENIA recruited singer Ailyn (born: Pilar Giménez García) as the replacement for Monika Pedersen, who left the group in 2007 after only one album due to "musical differences."
Ailyn is best known as a member of the young team in the Spanish version of "The X Factor", the biggest television talent competition in Europe.
Greek death metal band DAYLIGHT MISERY has made its three-song promotional CD available for free download at this location (RAR file).
The tracks featured on the promo CD are as follows:
01. Meadows of Desire 02. Soul Embraced 03. Depressive Icons
DAYLIGHT MISERY recently completed work on its debut album, "Depressive Icons", for a tentative early 2010 release via an as-yet-undetermined record label. The drums for the CD were recorded at Woodshed Studios in Germany by Seraph (DARK FORTRESS, NONEUCHILD) and producer Victor Bullock (DARK FORTRESS, CELTIC FROST). All artwork for the effort was handled by Travis Smith, who has previously worked with NEVERMORE, KATATONIA, OPETH and AMORPHIS, among others.
Formed in September 2008 by Stamos Kordas (guitar) and Vassilis "Illdisposer" Mazaris (vocals), DAYLIGHT MISERY's debut album is described in a press release as an "amalgam of the musical influences of its members: ROTTING CHRIST, NIGHTFALL, PARADISE LOST, AMORPHIS, SATURNUS, MY DYING BRIDE among others. Within the songs you'll notice the changes and sifts of emotions and all of them are characterized by their own unique melody which is sometimes fierce and sometimes melancholic."
"Depressive Icons" includes guest appearances by Efthimis Karadimas (NIGHTFALL) and Jakob Batten (ILLDISPOSED). The keyboard duties were handled by Q_Snc (UNHOLY RITUAL, SAVAOTH, OBSCECRATION) while the bass was recorded by Stergios Kanaropoulos (MORTAL TORMENT, THE ALMIGHTY FISHERMAN, LYTROSIS).
Fan-filmed video footage of LEAVES' EYES' November 16, 2009 performance at Z7 in Pratteln, Switzerland as part of the "Beauty & The Beast Tour" (with ATROCITY, SIRENIA, ELIS and STREAM OF PASSION) can be viewed below (courtesy of "lorenznightwish").
Due to health concerns, LEAVES' EYES bassist Alla Fedynitch is sitting out the band's shows for the remainder of the year. Her temporary replacement is Oliver Holzwarth (TARJA TURUNEN, BLIND GUARDIAN), who previously joined LEAVES' EYES on stage for two songs during the German/Norwegian female-fronted metal group's acoustic performance at the Metal Female Voices Fest on October 19, 2009 in Wieze, Belgium.
Fedynitch is suffering from a herniated vertebral disk and paralysis on her right hand, making it impossible for her to tour with the group.
"My Destiny", the new video from LEAVES' EYES, was directed by Patric Ullaeus (DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL) of Revolver Film Company in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Photos from the video shoot, as well as a German-language report from guitarist Thorsten "Tosso" Bauer, can be found on the Sounds2Move.de web site.
Former SEPULTURA and current CAVALERA CONSPIRACY drummer Igor "Iggor" Cavalera and his wife, Laima Leyton, recently spoke to AOL's Noisecreep about their DJ/hip hop/electro project MIXHELL.
When asked if SEPULTURA and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY fans will like MIXHELL, Igor — who plays live drums in MIXHELL while Laima is the DJ — replied, "I don't know. I really enjoy it, because for me it's still very, very extreme. My drumming is very energetic. It just has different grooves to it than what I do with CAVALERA."
"It's a bit heavy, but it has a lot of flavors in it, and it's not 100 percent that he's always on the drum set," added Laima. "He comes and goes from the sampler to the drum set. So whenever he's on the drums, it generates a lot of energy. Really strong. It's like a momentum of the show so it's really nice. Sometimes, he's just straight beats and disco beats and sometimes he does like tribal beats."
Having just wrapped up a North American tour, MIXHELL is working on a release for the spring.
"We're still deciding if we're going to have the full-length album or an EP with some remixes, but for sure something is going to come out," said Laima. "We're going to be going into the studio with BURAKA SOM SISTEMA. We just finished a track with SOULWAX and CROOKERS, and we're going to do one with CROOKERS and SOULWAX for the album as well. So a lot of collaborations coming up."
When asked in a May 2009 interview how his metal background has affected his work with MIXHELL, Igor replied, "For me, even when I was playing metal, I always tried new things, I was never stuck to one [thing]. It was always, like, very open-minded. Anybody who followed the SEPULTURA years knows that we tried new things; it was not about being stuck in time; it was about moving up, always. So, for me, MIXHELL is a continuation of my career."
Igor Cavalera left SEPULTURA in June 2006 due to "artistic differences." He has since been replaced by Jean Dolabella (ex-UDORA). Igor's departure from SEPULTURA came five months after he announced that he was taking a break from the group's touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their new son (who was born in January 2006). Filling in on drums during the band's spring 2006 European tour with IN FLAMES was Roy Mayorga, who played with Igor's brother Max in SOULFLY for several years in the late '90s and again in 2001-2003.
Igor is the second Cavalera to leave SEPULTURA. In 1996, Max Cavalera exited the group after the rest of the band fired Max's wife Gloria as SEPULTURA's manager.
Igor and Max are currently collaborating on a new project called CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. The group's debut album, "Inflikted", was released in March 2008 via Roadrunner Records.
Legendary Canadian thrashers SACRIFICE will be interviewed tonight (Wednesday, November 18) on York University's CHRY radio station at midnight EST on "The Red Switch" program.
You can listen to the show live via the Internet at this location.
"The Ones I Condemn", the new album from SACRIFICE, will be released in Europe on January 22, 2010 via Cyclone Empire Records. The CD, which was made available in July via Brazil's Marquee Records, was recorded at Rouge Valley Studio in Toronto, Ontario with engineer Darius Szczepaniak, who has previously worked with I MOTHER EARTH, SUM 41 and EDWIN, among many others. Guest musicians on the album include Jed Simon (ZIMMERS HOLE, TENET, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, ARMOROS), who "[laid] down a total whammy-bar barrage," and the band's old Scarborough metal comrade Dave Hewson (SLAUGHTER, STRAPPADO), who lent some guest vocals to "The Devil's Martyr".
"The Ones I Condemn" track listing:
01. We Will Prevail 02. The Ones I Condemn 03. Give Me Justice 04. The Great Wall 05. Tetragrammaton 06. Atrocity 07. Hiroshima 08. The Devil's Martyr (feat. Jed Simon and Dave Hewson) 09. Ultimate Power Corrupts 10. Desolation Alive 11. Soldiers Of Misfortune (live 2007) *
* European bonus track
The Canadian version of "The Ones I Condemn", featuring an exclusive bonus track — a cover of RUSH's "Athem" — is available in the USA through Relapse, Metal Haven Chicago, The End Records and Century Media mailorders.
Commented guitarist/vocalist Rob Urbinati: "Our recording process was real, so we didn't feel comfortable going too far into the digital realm for the cover. Our old friend, Kurt Bachman from BELIEVER, got us in touch with Michael 'Roz' Rosner, who does nothing but absolutely stunning work. Roz was into letting technology assist in creating art, not take over, and that is the same approach we take to music. Roz can make an image look beautiful, yet ugly; human yet inhuman; all awesome, unique imagery. The Eye Level studio team took our ideas and gave us a great cover."

ANTHRAX (featuring singer John Bush) is confirmed for the 2010 edition of Austrlia's Soundwave Festival, which will kick off on February 20 in Brisbane.
The dates are as follows:
Feb. 20 - Brisbane, AUS - RNA Showgrounds Feb. 21 - Sydney, AUS - Eastern Creek Raceway Feb. 26 - Melbourne, AUS - Melbourne Showgrounds Feb. 27 - Adelaide, AUS - Bonython Park Mar. 01 - Perth, AUS - Bassendean Oval
In a recent interview with Kerrang! magazine, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian stated about the band's recent appearance at U.K.'s Sonispherefestival , "It went better than I even hoped it would go. I'd been waiting four years for that moment that we had on [August 1] to have John Bush back in the ranks, and it was an unbelievably, magnificently emotional hour of my life; it was really amazing."
When asked about the likelihood that John Bush will rejoin ANTHRAX on a permanent basis, Ian replied, "It's obviously what we want, and I think this is just hopefully the first of a couple of steps to make it happen. The show went great — we all had a great time; John had a fucking blast — and hopefully this is now... the foot's in the door to make this happen again. But it's absolutely what we want to happen. I don't really see any other possibility."
ANTHRAX parted ways with singer Dan Nelson in July due to what has been described as "personal differences." As a result, the band canceled 10 European shows and pulled out of a U.S. tour with SLIPKNOT which was scheduled to take place in August and September.
ANTHRAX's manager, Izvor Zivkovic of Split Media, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET in July that the band's new album, "Worship Music", which was previously due in Europe on October 23 via Nuclear Blast Records, will now be "pushed back to a later date." According to Ian, Dan Nelson's tracks will most likely be erased from the CD, which was mixed at a New Orleans studio by Dave Fortman (a former member of UGLY KID JOE who has also worked with artists such as MUDVAYNE, EVANESCENCE).
"Land of the Freaks", the seventh FREAK KITCHEN album featuring twelve brand new tracks was released in Scandinavia (Bonnier Amigo, Universal, Rockweiler Ltd.) on October 21 and in the U.K. (Proper Music) on October 19. Jesse Capps of Rock Confidential recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST/HALFORD frontman Rob Halford. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Rock Confidential: I have to tell you — I've always noticed with your releases that you make sure the fans have quality products to keep them happy.
Halford: Thank you. I'm glad you recognize that. I really appreciate that. Most of my friends around the world, like yourself, rarely pick up on that point. Jesse, to me the launch of Metal God Entertainment was a chance to display what we're about. We've had a very successful run of reissuing the FIGHT and HALFORD stuff and we're focusing on the launch of Metal God Apparel and the Metal God record label. The philosophy behind that is to do the best we can and make sure when you give us your money that you get something decent back.
Rock Confidential: The attention to detail is something that excites me. It doesn't have to even be a celebrity such as yourself, but when someone builds a brand on their name and takes the pride to make sure it delivers on all fronts — that means a lot to me.
Halford: I don't take all of the credit for that and I never would. I'm surrounded by very talented people that have a lot of energy and have the same passion that I do. We all connect so the final result is tremendous.
Rock Confidential: Are you as hands-on as it appears with each piece of product you release?
Halford: I don't count for every bit of what happens. I'm there as a conduit. I'm constantly in touch with designers — primarily Mark Sasso, who works on all of the designs for Metal God Apparel. My manager, John Baxter, who runs the day-to-day operations of Metal God Entertainment through his company EMAS. Chip Ruggieri is my main guy for PR and all things associated with my solo activity. The final stamp of approval has to come from me. I'm always there in the mix.
Rock Confidential: Let's talk about the clothing line. How did you know Metal God Apparel was something you wanted to pursue? How did you develop ideas for the designs?
Halford: When I opened my closet door everything in there was black! Black t-shirts, black pants, black boots. I love black because it's heavy metal, but let's try to lighten it up a tad. The fun of merchandise with PRIEST or my solo endeavours has always been being involved in the creation of those items. This is just an extension of that, really. How far can we go? What can we do next? How can we take the Metal God brand and put it into some kind of clothing experiment? The tried and trusted tshirt was the first way to move forward. These first 13 or so designs are the first run. We're going to branch out into a more comprehensive display for the Magic convention in Vegas next year. We'll hopefully have about 30 designs by then. Beyond that we're pretty optimistic about where else we might go. We're still new. We've got a long way to go yet. The first launch has been very well received. I'm grateful to everybody that's taking to it and enjoying it.
Rock Confidential: I'm sure you feel different before you go on stage. You have to feel like a different being when you're getting ready to go on stage to a massive crowd.
Halford: I do. It's bizarre. I was thinking about this the other night. I came off stage in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago and I'd just played to 15,000 Japanese metalheads. I was laying in bed at two in the morning thinking about what I did and it was like another person was doing it. It's like going outside of my body and looking at myself! It's great and I love it. You're going out there and you're living something. It's live and it's a different world. When I come off stage, shower, change, eat and go back to the hotel — I'm no longer the same person that was on stage. You really have to work hard to be able to seperate those things. Some people can't do that. I need to be able to push my shopping cart around Ralph's and get the milk, bread and juice! I learned how to do that years ago and I have a wonderful life.
Former EVERY TIME I DIE drummer Michael Novak Jr. and SPEAKERFIRE guitarist Ian Weidrick have joined forces in a new Buffalo, New York-based project called DEADLY ANIMALS. The band, which features Weidrick on guitar and vocals, is currently looking for a record label and writing new songs. In the meantime, you can check out four tracks from the group's 2009 demo — "Incinerate", "EveryFuckingThing", "Beautiful Machine" and "Constellations" — at PureVolume.com.
ABRAXAS, the new death metal band featuring Makoto Mizoguchi (PYREXIA, INTERNAL SUFFERING, HATE ETERNAL) on guitar and bass, Mike Hrubovcak (MONSTROSITY, VILE, DIVINE RAPTURE, I.C.E., AZURE EMOTE) on vocals and Lance Wright (VILE, QUINTA ESSENTIA, TEMPLE OF BLOOD) on drums, will release its debut four-song EP, "Wretched Existence", on December 15 via Relapse Records. The effort will also be available as a T-shirt bundle, featuring the amazing artwork of Drew Elliott (NECROPHAGIA, GOREAPHOBIA, AMORPHIS).
Three tracks from the EP — "Eternally Erased", "A Species Untrue" and "Folding For Our Demise" — are available for streaming on the official ABRAXASMySpace page.
You can pre-order "Wretched Existence" at this location.
ABRAXAS is currently working on a full-length album for a tentative 2010 release.
Los Angeles metallers FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH performed at John Dee in Oslo, Norway earlier tonight (Wednesday, November 18) as a four-piece after the band's guitarist Zoltan Bathory was taken ill. Asbjørn Slettemark, the host of rock/metal radio show "Pyro" and host of mainstream TV show "Lydverket", told BLABBERMOUTH.NET, "After SHADOWS FALL had played their set, the crowd was gearing up for FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, and the crew did their changeover. When 5FDP was supposed to start playing, vocalist Ivan [Moody] appeared on stage, and told the crowd that Zoltan had gotten really sick, and had been taken to the hospital. Ivan asked the crowd if they wanted 5FDP to perform as a four-piece or cancel and come back sometime later. The 250-strong crowd scramed for the band to play, so Ivan told them that the band would be back to play in a couple of minutes.
"And so they did, and the show was actually a great success. It was 5FDP's first show in Norway, and the crowd sang along and moshed enthusiastically to 'Never Enough', 'The Bleeding', 'Hard To See' and the bands other crowd pleasers, and the band did a real good job despite being one man down. They will definetely play for bigger crowds in Norway when they return.
"I tried to find out what had happened to Zoltan, but nobody at the venue could tell what had happened. I did an interview with 5FDP guitarist Jason Hook a couple of hours earlier, and at the same time Zoltan was in the next room doing an interview with a Norwegian magazine, and at that time he seemed fine. During the gig the band didn't say anything about what had happened; the only reference to Zoltan was at the end when they asked the crowd to join them in a toast to Zoltan."
Slettemark's original report in Norwegian can be found at this location.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS have postponed their previously announced December and January tour dates until next year so they can complete work on they highly anticipated new album. The CD is being helmed by famed producer Don Was, who has previously worked with THE ROLLING STONES, IGGY POP and POISON, among many others.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' plan to release the record has been complicated by a legal dispute between STP's label, Atlantic Records, singer Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz. Reports have indicated that Weiland and Kretz consider themselves free agents and are looking for a new deal, while the label claims they are bound to their original contract.
The new album will be the first from the band since 2001's "Shangri-La-Dee-Da". During STP's hiatus, guitarist Dean DeLeo told The Pulse of Radio that he and his brother, bassist Robert DeLeo, kept their songwriting chops up by working with artists ranging from PINK to PETER FRAMPTON. "We've been on a lot of writing sessions over the years and you know what? It's kind of cool, man, 'cause you go from writing with PINK to, like, PETER FRAMPTON and that's a wide array of music, you know," he said. "And it's kind of cool. You get to really cover a lot of terrain, man."
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS were reactivated in 2008 after a six-year hiatus, during which Scott Weiland recorded two albums with VELVET REVOLVER. He also issued his second solo record, "Happy In Galoshes", late last year, after STP completed its six-month comeback tour.
The DeLeos recorded one album with ARMY OF ANYONE, a project they started with FILTER frontman Richard Patrick.
10Musica.com conducted an interview with Duff McKagan (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES, DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED) after DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED's November 7, 2009 performance at the Pepsi Music Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Watch the chat below.
Drummer Geoff Reading recently left DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED and was replaced by Isaac Carpenter (LOUDERMILK, GOSLING, OURS, THE EXIES).
"Sick", the latest full-length album from DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED, landed at position No. 43 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
"Sick" was released in North America on April 7 via Century Media Records. An e-card for the CD, which was produced by Martin Feveyear (PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, KINGS OF LEON), is available at this location.
In addition to McKagan and Carpenter, LOADED features bassist Jeff Rouse (VENDETTA RED, ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE) and guitarist Mike Squires (ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE).
LOADED released "Live Episode" (1999) and "Dark Days" (2001), before other commitments meant LOADED were put on the back burner to some extent, although they never split up.

According to MetOnTour.com, which is described as "your FREE virtual backstage pass to every METALLICA show," METALLICA will release a new DVD featuring footage from the band's Canadian performances in Quebec City, Quebec (October 31 and November 1) and Ottawa, Ontario (November 3). Drummer Lars Ulrich commented from the stage at the second Quebec City show, "I couldn't think of a better city for METALLICA to film a DVD." The concerts were filmed by the band's longtime friend and collaborator, famed video director Wayne Isham.
METALLICA has set November 23 as the release date for "Francais Por Une Nuit", or "French For One Night", the full-length concert DVD that the band filmed in Nimes, France on July 7, 2009. The show took place at a historic Roman amphitheatre called the Arenes de Nimes. In addition to the band's complete 18-song set, the disc also includes interviews with the group and five video clips shot by members of the audience. Although initially announced as a France-only release, fan demand has led to Metallica also making the set available through their web site, Metallica.com, as well as the site of the French branch of the band's record company.
A statement posted on the band's web site said, "ALL aspects of the project are French as the show was filmed, recorded, and edited with French camera and recording crews, the artwork on the package and special box set (more on that in a minute!) were created by a French design team; even the credits are in French."
The DVD will come in three formats: standard DVD or Blu-ray in a digipack including a 16-page booklet, and a deluxe limited edition box set that includes the DVD, a copy of "Death Magnetic" on CD, a T-shirt, laminated pass, and five exclusive photos.
Former M.O.D./S.O.D. frontman Billy Milano joined MUNICIPAL WASTE on stage at Red 7 in Austin, Texas on November 12, 2009 to perform a version of the S.O.D. classic "United Forces". Watch fan-filmed video footage of this unique one-time collaboration below.
"Massive Aggressive", the new album from MUNICIPAL WASTE, sold around 2,100 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD landed at No. 10 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
"Massive Aggressive" was released on August 25 via Earache Records. According to a press release, the CD "brings the promise of the band's most ferocious and most focused album of their career." With such ferocity flowing through the whole of the album, the group knew it needed the right visuals to complement the vibe of the music. MUNICIPAL WASTE vocalist Tony Foresta claims that the only man who could get that imagery just right was Andrei Bouzikov, the artist responsible for the cover to 2007's "The Art Of Partying".
"Wrong Answer", the new video from MUNICIPAL WASTE, was filmed in New York City with director David Brodsky (SUICIDE SILENCE, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, IN THIS MOMENT) and his crew at MyGoodEye, is said to have been inspired by '70s game shows, gore, and more.

Vocalist Kobi Farhi comments on the album's concept and the striking new promo photo (see below): "First of all, I wish to thank each and every one of you for all the comments you left for our new band photo. The comments were from Jews, Christians and Muslims as one. You all know that this unification is what we're all about.
"'The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR' is a concept album revolving around a hero: the warrior of light. This hero isn't someone specific, but could be the listener of the album himself, as this album deals with the problems we are facing in our lives every day. Especially here, in the Middle East, we feel that we are trapped in a loop of confusion and darkness. Living in this region, we see that year after year nothing changes. People continue to die in useless wars and we are trapped in a bloody circle. ORPHANED LAND has been around for 18 years and we continue to sing about the same subjects and stories, because after 18 years we are still living in a tragic, orphaned land. To fight this tragedy we have chosen a peaceful, yet powerful weapon: our music."
Farhi previously stated about the upcoming CD: "As people that were born into the tragedy of our region, we have always been devoted to creating harmony between conflicts, a musical heaven on earth, a tango between God and Satan. Even in the album's artwork we combined Hebrew and Arabic, regardless of the fight between Jews and Muslims. I found a Jordanian guy, specialized in calligraphic artwork. He took letters from Hebrew and Arabic and moulded them in his art to create a symbol of peace. Same goes for our band photo, where we portrayed a synergy between the three monotheistic religions that believe in the same God and yet ridiculously have been killing each other for centuries 'in the name of God' and turned the holy land into an orphaned land. Naturally, we continued this idea of union on a musical level as well and the result is as always crazy, it's a miracle — in our concerts: our Jewish fans sing in Arabic and our Muslim fans sing in Hebrew, brave friendships have spawned and our Middle Eastern metal music destroys all this political witchcraft we have been trapped in for so long. This is a musical journey of hope in lands of war, creating heaven on earth, building a new Jerusalem."
An audio teaser for "The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR" is available for streaming on the band's official web site.
Tom Murphy of Westword recently conducted an interview with bassist Alex Webster of Florida death metallers CANNIBAL CORPSE. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Westword: Did your latest album get banned in Germany or anywhere else right away and do you know why Germany and Australia lifted their respective bans on your previous albums?
Alex Webster: As far as I know, things are okay in Australia these days. Even though we're in the band and you'd think we'd keep up with that sort of thing, we don't really keep up with any of it, unless it affects us directly while we're on tour. With Germany, we do have problems with some of our older releases, but with "Evisceration Plague", nothing so far. But in certain parts of Germany, Bavaria in particular, the local government will insist that we don't play certain songs. But most of Germany is alright. I guess with any law you can interpret it in a number of ways. Some of the areas of Germany will interpret the music censorship laws they have a little more strictly than others. In general it's been okay, though, and we've been able to play whatever we want. The last time we played Munich, we had to cut a number of songs from the set, but a couple of years before, no problem. It comes and goes. It seems a little capricious to me but I suppose they have their reasons.
Westword: The picture in the middle of the lyric booklet is incredibly evocative. When did you first start working with Vince Locke, what drew you to his work and do you ever give him any direction on the artwork?
Alex Webster: We first got interested in Vince Locke because of this comic book Deathworld that he did in the late '80s and early '90s. It was a zombies taking over the world type of thing. Our original singer, Chris Barnes, contacted Vince and he was involved with our very first album. He's done artwork either for the interior or the cover for every album we've done since then. Vince is great. The kind of art he does is right up our alley, so it's really a no brainer to use him. He's perfect. We don't have to coach him that much. He kind of knows what we want. We'll generally give him song titles and let him go for it from there, when we ask him for a piece of art. We maybe give him the lyrics as well and say, "Hey, do your thing." We don't give him that much direction.
Westword: Paul Mazurkiewicz said that he had all but reinvented his playing style for your latest album. Was that shift a result of a change in songwriting and what effect did that have on the rhythmic dynamic of the band?
Alex Webster: I think the big change for Paul was playing along to a click track and practicing with a metronome for the entire seven or eight month period leading up to the recording of the album. I think it made a difference. I did work out a lot of the drum parts in my songs for him. The drum parts for Rob [Barrett] and [Pat O'Brien's] songs, they worked out a little more the old fashioned way. I just programmed a bunch of drums, and Paul played very similar parts to what I programmed. That stuff I just programmed to play at home or whatever. I certainly give Paul free rein to play what he wants. Though, generally, what he played was really close, but he added his own little stuff here and there. I think the writing style is similar. This album still sounds like a CANNIBAL CORPSE album but probably it's a little tighter. When you're constantly practicing to a click track in your headphones in the background, you start to internalize that click. So what I've noticed now is that when we play live, those songs we practiced that way all sound extremely tight. And his meter is really good on those in particular. That's how I've been practicing at home for years. Just put on a metronome and practice with that to help develop my timing. So when you take the metronome away you still have better timing. I think it's a useful tool for any musician.
Westword: Why was SLAYER such a big influence on you and your band? I listened to "Evisceration Plague" closely last night and "Skewered From Ear to Eye" is really reminiscent of "Angel of Death".
Alex Webster: Oh really? I never thought of it like that, but honestly we listen to SLAYER so much that the influence is probably very pervasive. It's nothing intentional, but if there are some parts in that song that reminded you of SLAYER, it's probably something that happened accidentally. "Reign in Blood" is one of the greatest albums ever. I love "Hell Awaits", too, so that kind of stuff, I just listened to it so much at a very important time in my life as a musician when I was first starting out. That stuff got embedded in my brain, I guess. The other thrash bands were good, but they didn't have that dark sound that SLAYER had. I think that the dark sound that SLAYER had is why they're such an influence on the death metal scene. Because that, to me, is one of the big things, far beyond the vocal stuff, that makes death metal different from regular thrash is the effort to make it sound dark. And SLAYER had that. So many SLAYER songs could be death metal songs if Tom had a different vocal style. I know they had a big impact on us, and I know we're not the only death metal band they impacted.
Austria's Stormbringer.at webzine conducted an interview with Alex Webster at this year's Way Of Darkness festival, which was held October 2-3, 2009 in Lichtenfels, Germany. Watch the chat below.

In the weeks leading up to the release of their self-titled album, MUDVAYNE continue their media onslaught by taking over active rock radio. As of today, 70 stations have added the new MUDVAYNE single "Scream With Me" into rotation, making the song the most added track at both Active Rock and Alternative this week. "Scream With Me" follows the success of the first single from their last album, "Do What You Do", which was the most played Active Rock song of the past year.
Two songs — "Scream With Me" and "Heard It All Before" — from the forthcoming self-titled album from MUDVAYNE are available for streaming below. Reportedly the first album to ever use blacklight-reactive ink (making it only visible under a black light), the CD's cover image was created by world-renowned tattoo king Paul Booth.
Every bit of art and text in the packaging of the record will be printed on ink that can only be seen under a black light.
Commented Booth: "This project has been absolutely killer to work on! The whole black light concept was totally experimental and quite the challenge, so of course, as an artist, I was drawn to it like a moth to a bugzapper."
He added, "I am happy to see bands focusing more energy on their album art… something I thought the Internet had killed. Hailz to MUDVAYNE and everyone at the label for going the extra mile!"
The album will be available in the following formats:
***1. Super Deluxe - "Limited-edition" run of only 1,000 copies which will be sold direct to the consumer from the band's site. Pre-order it at Mudvayne.com starting next Tuesday, November 10 and receive the digital album two weeks before release!

Due on December 22 via Epic, "Mudvayne" has been described by drummer Matt McDonough as "the best" CD "the band has recorded since our second album, 'The End Of All Things to Come'." The album was produced by Dave Fortman's (SLIPKNOT, EVANESCENCE) right-hand man, Jeremy Parker, and is "a little more retro for MUDVAYNE" from a songwriting point of view, according to singer Chad Gray. "We've been kind of making this natural progression, and I think for this one, we just sort of naturally regressed," he told Noisecreep. "We took the smarter songwriting guys that we've become and mixed it with the not-smart songwriting guys that we were ... I mean, we used to just take 20 parts, cram it together, and call it a song. Over time, playing in a band, you kind of know what to expect. It doesn't really make it easier, but you kind of have this thing in your head that you kind of know where you're going. You can see the light at the end of the tunnel before entering the tunnel. It's faint, and dim, but it's there."
London, U.K.-based progressive extreme metal band DE PROFUNDIS has inked a European deal with Kolony Records. Due in February 2010, the group's second album, "A Bleak Reflection", was recorded in June/July 2009 with producer Fernando Pereira Lopes (MISANTHROPE, ORAKLE) and was mastered by Tim Turan (EMPEROR, OPETH, MOTÖRHEAD).
Commented the label: "Kolony Records are very proud of this signing and would like to welcome DE PROFUNDIS to the label's roster. We were blown away by the band's musical style (an original mix of black-death-doom and, why not, some progressive metal) from the moment we listened to their promo. The guys showed a lot of professionalism during all our discussions and we were really impressed with the international live experience of DE PROFUNDIS. The band has a proven track record when it comes to live performances, having landed high-profile gigs with likes of IRON MAIDEN, NEVERMORE and ANNIHILATOR in both the U.K. and abroad. DE PROFUNDIS has already performed in Greece, France, Portugal, Romania and India; the band is currently finalising plans to tour Europe on a wider scale during 2010. That's the kind of band we like to work with!"
DE PROFUNDIS stated, "Right from the first communication, we have been very impressed by Kolony Records' professional and honest approach. Following countless emails and a face-to-face meeting with the label manager Lorenzo Marchello, we are confident that we have found the right label to release our new album and help DE PROFUNDIS to reach the next level. We are very happy to be the part of the Kolony family and look forward to working with them for many years to come."
"A Bleak Reflection" will be released in Europe in the first week of February 2010 and will come with a 12-page booklet, created by artist Darryll Jones, that hints at the concept behind the album's lyrics. DE PROFUNDIS guitarist Roman Subbotin commented, "[The new album] represents a significant moment for our musical evolution. We've all worked really hard and, in my humble opinion, achieved rather spectacular results."
"A Bleak Reflection" track listing:
01. The Ephemeral Burden 02. Ablaze In Autumn's Fire 03. Nocturnal Splendour 04. Cease To Be 05. Crimson Black Bleeding 06. Cold Is The Grave 07. Longing 08. The Mourner
