GUNS N' ROSES: 'Chinese Democracy' Headed For First-Week Sales Of Less Than 300K - Dec. 1, 2008
According to Billboard.com, GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", will sell in the range of 250,000-260,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release (including a reported 25,000 downloads at iTunes on November 23 not counted towards the opening week for the Sunday release), which is down from expectations that it would sell anywhere from 300,000 to 784,000 units. Sales figures will not be available until Wednesday (December 3), but sources that rapper KANYE WEST's "808s & Heartbreak" will sell in the range of 425,000-450,000 units, significantly down from 700,000-975,000 units previously projected.

The first-week sales of "Chinese Democracy", which was released through an exclusive deal with the Best Buy chain, will put it on par with that of the opening number registered by "Contraband", the 2004 debut from VELVET REVOLVER, which features in its ranks Rose's former GUNS N' ROSES bandmates Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. That CD sold 256,000 copies in the U.S. during its first week of release to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 chart.

"Chinese Democracy" first-week chart positions so far (Note: The album wasn't available a full week in many of these territories when the charts were compiled):

Brazil: #1
Finland: #1
New Zealand: #2
UK: #2
Australia: #3
Ireland: #3
Italy: #3
Japan: #3
Norway: #3
Hungary: #4
Netherlands: #4
Sweden: #4
Denmark: #7
Spain: #12

While there are high points, for the most part these songs aren't even rock music. This is pop rock bullshit, and I wish this effort nothing but failure.

You like to hurt me, you know that you do
You like to think in some way that it's me and not you (you know it isn't true)
You like to have me, jump and be good, but I don't want to do it
You don't know why I won't act the way you think I should
You thought they'd make me behave and submit

What were you thinking?
'Cause I don't forget

You don't know why I won't give in
To hell with the pressure I'm not caving in
You know that I got under your skin
You sold your soul but I won't let you win
You talk too much, you say I do
Difference is nobody cares about you

We've got all the answers
You know everything
Well nobody asked you
It's a mystery to me

I'm sorry for you
Not sorry for me (Not sorry for me)
You don't know who in the hell to or not to believe

All well and good
I'll kicked your ass like I said that I would
You tell them stories they'd rather believe
Use and confuse them they're numb and naive
Truth is the truth hurts don't you agree?
It's harder to live with the truth about you than to live with the lies about me

Nobody owes you
Not one god damn thing
You know where to put your
Just shut up and sing

You know you
Anyone else should be sorry for you
You've got no heart
You can't see all that you've done for me
I know the reasons you tear me apart

I would definitely agree that the long gestation period has impacted sales of this CD, as have years of downloading of the demos. But, that said, it's still a terrific album - is it as good as 'Appetite for Destruction?' No, of course not - but, it doesn't have to be. I would say it's easily as good as either of the 'Use Your Illusion' albums - it's got a couple of great songs, along with several very good to excellent songs and one or two less than great tracks.

I do think this is a GNR album - and not just because it says so on the cover. It may not have any of the other original members, but, it does have Axl's voice and his vision, and I'd say that makes it "more" GNR than Velvet Revolver. VR isn't bad (their first album was pretty excellent, I think), but, everytime Scott Weiland opened his mouth, it made the band sound like STP. And, that's what's happening on 'Chinese Democracy' - everytime Axl opens his mouth, it sounds like GNR.

Sure some bands would think thats great, but they also spent about 0.01% of the money on their albums, and with little to no publicity. Thats the funniest part about people bragging about sales. Sales mean nothing about quality. if it werent for the millions they spent on advirtising, they would have sold 10,000 at most.

As a music release,it has done OK
As a business venture,it would be considered a total flop and loss of money

and i saw him live 2 times 2 years ago and he was great both times. saw him at Novarock 2 nights before i saw Metallica and he and his band was much better, and they even played all of Master of Puppets, but they were still good, but maybe Motorhead made them look just ok because Motorhead blew them away.

and this album hasnt been advertised anywhere near as much as the AC/DC album or Death Magnetic, and i think its better then both and then Black Ice is also bettter then Death Magnetic, but still they are all good and many times better then crap thats been on the charts for the last 5-10 years or so, just be happy we have some good rock music on the charts again, heavy or not so heavy, who gives if its good.

I know this might not make sense, but might like this better if it was not GNR. I like some music that is not heavy (say some Pink Floyd or early Porcupine Tree before they added heavier nuances), but when I buy a CD of a rock band, I want it to rock. This one lacks that to me. There are some good tunes all in all, but it's not great. Probably like the first VR better and I did not love that either. I thought after all these years, it would be better. Not bad, but a letdown to me

I kind of agree with the Izzy comments. Slash is a good guitarist and Axl has a unique voice, but it's hard to replace good songwriting. Wish they'd all bury the hatchet and get back together and put out something with a little more balls.

Still with GNR, Metallica and AC/DC getting some numbers, it's better than the last few years here

if you thought the record would sell more then about 500K. It's 2008 not 1990. Nothing sells huge. 500K today is like selling 1.5 million 15 years ago. Hell a 100K today is like 500K 15 years ago. Just a different landscape today. Also selling at Best Buy only is a huge mistake or anyone one store for that matter (Walmart might be a slim exception to the rule). It's not like every damn city has a Best Buy. Then your on the internet and that becomes a pain for many people. This CD would've sold 500K or very close to it if it was released in all stores. But I'm sure Best Buy paid a pretty penny to have it though.

Why do people keep saying its a complete failure?????? I'm sure your the same people the think every release from Metallica is a let down because it isn't Master of Puppets II. Grant if your expecting a AFD style album you haven't been keeping up with GNR news over the last 10 years+ or so. If you have you'd know you where going to get a very different sound from the classic GNR. Also if you really expected after 14 years and all the shit surrounding it that it would ever live up to it your even dumber. Nothing is worth 14 years in the music industry. Hell most bands can't even stay together for 14 years and be successful on any level.

Keep spinnin', T-boner, you know exactly how stupid this is making you look. (you also told us that it would be out years ago, "set in stone," lol).

And for the other Axl fanboys: spent 15 years making the so-called best album of all time, most expensive album of all time and a decent showing on the charts = utter, pathetic failure. And y'all know it well. This album shoulda sold a million copies first week if was half as good as you said it would be. I dont even think it will reach 1 million... why? Well, YOU morons all went out and bought it right away, and now that the sheeple have bought it, who else is left? Axls already shot his wad, and a pretty pathetic wad it turned out to be. He's such a baby that he's threatening legal action against Dr. Pepper for "ruining" Chinese Democracy's release, like the publicity didn't help him. WAAAAAAH! Poor little girl, wants to take his ball and go home now.

Actually, I kinda understand why Axl is pissed: most expensive album of all time, Geffen stopped paying for it years ago, so Axl has sunk a lot of his own cash into it. Its gonna have to sell millionS to turn a profit, and it dont look like that will happen.

In summation: TOTAL FAILURE!!!

However, in the interest of cashing-in, dragging the name thru the dirt and Axl's ego-maniacalism, it is being passed off as a Guns n' Roses release, which it is not. It'll go platinum due to sheer curiosity, but not much more than that, me thinks.

They have a fucking $16M bill (possibly more?) to pay for the studio alone before they even start making money. That doesn't count the overhead involved in packaging and distro. With 37% of figures in, Chinese Democracy has sold 143,000 or so copies according to Hits Daily Double. Do the math - if the percentage holds true, that'll be around 400,000. That's as of this evening, so either the percentages are wonky or the estimate was off.

Second, Best Buy bought a reported 2 million copies of the album up front. You can be sure they'll do whatever they can to move them. That having been said - there's probably twice as many WalMarts as Best Buy's in the US. Bit of a climb to reach AC/DC's numbers, and AC/DC had much less of a wait.

Look to the North - Canada doesn't have the Best Buy exclusive, although there are plenty of Best Buy's there - and Chinese Democracy is #1 on the HMV charts there, since they're allowed to sell it.

Over the next year CD will do 2-3 million US and some more international. Not bad in today's climate.

I like the album. Opinions aside though, Axl's pretty fucked if it doesn't pick up. It very well could (remember, Appetite sold just as much before a record company rep "requesteD" the Welcome video on Mtv- it was already out a full nine months!)

However, I really think this signals the start of whats going to be likely inevitable- A (semi) original lineup reunion.

What would be cool is if Axl could release the three other albums online for free or at a discount, and go on a world tour with the Mark II lineup.

I know that all the ex-members are for a reunion, its just Axl holding it up. He has to swallow his pride eventually.

Its a shame though, because its less likely those other albums will be released now, and I'm curious to what other directions he took the band in..

Maybe, just maybe, they can split up a reunion album with unreleased songs from the next three of the "buckethead years" ones, or something like I mentione.d

Has Axl Gone AWOL?Tuesday • December 2, 2008 12:44:58 AM

RECORD label bosses are fuming after GUNS N’ ROSES frontman AXL ROSE went missing for two months – costing the band a No1 album.

After spending 15 years and £15million recording their big comeback Chinese Democracy, only top spot was good enough.

But they lost out to THE KILLERS’ Day & Age in Sunday’s UK album chart rundown — with BRANDON FLOWERS’ group notching up sales of 200,000 during the week — 80,000 more than Guns N’ Roses.

Bosses at label Geffen are blaming unpredictable Axl for the disappointing sales after he went AWOL for two months before the release date.

Despite all the effort put into one of the most extravagant rock albums of all time, staff could not contact Axl to get him to promote his rock epic.

In fact, they failed to make contact with him from the day he delivered the final cut.

Chinese Democracy’s first week US sales are between 300,000 and 500,000. Yet their 1987 debut album Appetite For Destruction went on to sell a staggering 28million, so they have a long way to go with their new effort.

Genius

An insider said: “Everyone knows Axl is a bit of a maverick genius and won’t do anything he doesn’t want to do.

“The label is really glad to have him back. But it is frustrating because the album would have had a much better chance of going to No1 if he had only been prepared to show his face.

“People have been trying to contact him for two months and he’s been completely AWOL.

“You would have thought after spending 15 years on an album you might do a few weeks promotion.”

Better news for the label’s bean counters is the elusive Axl is rumoured to be trying to get the band’s first line-up back together.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Guitarist IZZY STRADLIN has said he is keen to see the original members back together and axe legend SLASH’s involvement in his current band VELVET REVOLVER looks shaky after they were dropped by their label.

If Axl has been spending the last two months of his time reuniting the original members for a world tour, I think Geffen might just forgive him.

As long as they don’t have to wait another 15 years.

I think something cool yet strange would be to tour and support Chinese Democracy with the classic lineup. I think he may be getting together with Slash and everyone as we speak. Don't you find it weird that Velvet Revolver still hasn't found a singer. A GnR reunion would definitely pay off the 13 million it cost to make the album.

somebody wrote Chin Dem sounds more like GnR than VR, well that's why VR didn't call themselves GnR! they weren't, even though they have more members. Yes, they don't own the name either. its NOT GnR, even if its a great or crap album, & sells double platinum. How can it be anything more than a solo effort when there are PAGES of musicians on the album. Buckethead isn't even in the band anymore. The GnR name simply gives Axl the power to sell CDs, & tour tickets. Yes he owns the name. And not cuz he started the name with Tracii Guns, that's the weakest argument, the name wasn't owned yet....GnR was the combination of all the ingredients. You can replace a piece here & there(Adler), but saying its GnR with just Axl is the same with saying the same for any huge band being led just by the singer, Stones, Zep, Aerosmith. Its foolish. And the other argument that Buckethead is better than Slash, if so, so what. Its subjective #1, & #2, its was that sound that helped define the GnR style. Not shredding. They were anti shred....and this is not saying the new album sucks, I wish it luck.

that 300K in sales is the first week. SkyLoLow, 500K can be reached in the first month. I do think it will start dying out though, the first burst of sales are the die hard Axl people, a few curious, then if it doesn't bare fruit, some cross over singles, its going to be hard pressed to get beyond 1.5...though someone made a good point, Walmart probably bought 2mil right off, in order to get the rights to sell...its getting more rock radio airplay than I thought right now. There's a decent buzz, but I think it will die out. I was a major GnR fan, but this simply isn't GnR. I think those old enough to be around in '88 know what I'm talking about.

This keeps getting better and better.... Best Buy bought 2 MILLION copies of junk plastic. With the economy in the shape it is in, GnR just might be the downfall of Best Buy.... and slash24 I agree with you this shouldn't be GnR, however they used the name on the cover of the album and that is where it lies. If this crap pile makes it to 1 million copies AT ALL i will be very surprised....

Did Best Buy really have to invest in 2mil "units" of the CD? Or is this speculation? Had it not been released it could have been the coolest album ever, this mystery CD, that was supposed to change the music world. The Title track is decent, but reminds me of Marilyn Manson production. GnR's strength was its raw boned roughness.(at least early on)...I bet had Geffen not pushed, it might still be on the shelf. How many CDs must sell to regain 13mil? I bet Axl gets a nice slice too....week 2 will tell alot, if 50K sell in week 2, then OverKill is right, it might just fizzle out. And Axl doesn't promote at all. (which I think is cool)...its all about the Music, if he has some hits on his hands, at least rock radio hits, then there's a shot of selling. That's alot of debt though, 13mil.

It is true that Axl has gone AWOL, likely within the confines of his Malibu mansion. Apparently, after a severe bout of cabin fever (where Rose allegedly removed countless caps from milk bottles exclusively with his left hand and refilled the vessels with his own urine - using only his right hand), he summoned his limousine driver to shuttle him down to the harbor. There, he boarded a large ocean liner and proceeded to jump overboard when the ship reached the bottomless waters of the deep sea. Luckily for Axl, a school of mystical dolphins came to the rescue and carried him back to the sandy shorelines of Santa Monica, where he was left to face neverending criticism of his purported magnum opus, Chinese Democracy. More details at 10...

Axl's wearing tissue boxes on his feet, being fitted for another braided wig, and letting his eyebrows grow back in. His fingernails are getting long & twisted. He has black grease paint under his eyes, ready for battle....He did look less freaky the last time GnR went out (2006?) then he did when he reimmerged with the XXL football shirts, on the MTV awards, he looked like a demented clown, probably right out of surgery. Great guy though, salt of the earth.
