PEARL JAM Members Prep For GREEN RIVER Reunion
- July 10, 2008
|
|
|
The Pulse of Radio reports that PEARL JAM bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard are prepping for this weekend's reunion performance with GREEN RIVER, the Seattle-based band in which both musicians got their start. The group, which also features members of MUDHONEY and was one of the earliest influences on the legendary Seattle "grunge" scene, will perform for the first time in almost 21 years on Sunday (July 13) at the 20th anniversary celebration of Sub Pop Records.
Ament told Billboard.com that the band has re-learned two previously unreleased songs called "Leech" and "Baby, Help Me Forget" from its first demo for the occasion. Ament explained, "In a weird way, those are probably some of the best songs we have...At the time, we thought they were way too simple or not challenging enough. But in retrospect, they're really great pop songs. We re-learned those two, but there are five or six songs that never got released."
GREEN RIVER has rehearsed five times in anticipation of the show, and Ament hinted that the group could work together again in the future, saying, "It would be fun to write a couple of new songs with those guys."
Ament and Gossard will join the rest of PEARL JAM on Saturday (July 12) for the taping of the "VH1 Rock Honors" tribute to THE WHO. They'll be joined by FOO FIGHTERS, INCUBUS, THE FLAMING LIPS, TENACIOUS D and THE WHO themselves. PEARL JAM will perform "The Real Me".
In other news, New York's Daily News reported that PEARL JAM singer Eddie Vedder rewarded a fan who found Vedder's girlfriend's cell phone in the back seat of a New York City taxi. The phone, which contained private photos of Vedder, his girlfriend and their family, was discovered last week. After Vedder called the number, the fan immediately returned the phone. Vedder gave him a thank-you letter, an engraved Zippo lighter and a $500 cash reward.

With the exception of some bands like Nirvana, smashing. Guns, Radiohead. Most of the 90 sucked.
So many clone bands who sounded like pearl jam made me sick. It was the internet that everyone hates who gave the metal bands a chance to get airplay through the wires and into our homes. It was the internet who helped the metal music in the millennium. It was the internet that breathed life into the metal arenas
Metal still does not get video and airplay but at least now we can downlaod and buy and try our music.

Personally, I think the 70's was the greatest decade for music (Zeppelin, Sabbath, Kiss, The Clash...etc). I also think the early to mid 90's was a great time for music too. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Jeff Buckley, Tool and of course Nirvana which I wasn't such a big fan of but, a huge influence to a lot of people. I think the whole rap/metal and Nu Metal thing ruined the 90's...now that was terrible. The 80's certainly had its moments with the thrash scene, hardcore and the whole glam scene....that was a great time. Basically, IMO everything from 1997 to now hasn't been all that great or inspiring. Oh yeah...Pearl Jam is still a great band.

the above is total bullshit.
all the internet has brought to us is a sea of irrelevant imitators that hide the otherwise rare quality metal bands. quantity doesn't mean quality! honestly, the only bands that have impressed me in the last 7 years are demo acts. the labels all sold out and flood the market with hundreds of disposable releases each month.
metal's never been as good as when it was unpopular and underground, period.

Pearl Jam rocked!!! I think grunge served as such a stark contrast to 80's hair metal that its awesome. From glamour to dirty, even the music was polar opposite. I think thats why it stuck such a chord with so many people, it was so radically different from what was going on.

Perhaps a lot of you are too young to remember the metal scene in the 90's. It was dead, you had to Go south America and in south america you do not sell any cds it's all bootlegs
Priest, Maiden Sabbeth, Dio, Crue, Saxon ect.. with of course a few exceptions where all palying small theatres in north maerican and europe in the 1990's. No air play, no video play, no one at the shows. Metal bands were getting thrown off labels, bottom line no money.
Today all of the above are doing great in concerts, they are selling more merchandise and are slowely making a comeback without airplay or video play. You know why becuase of the net!!!
Downloading has allowed the world access to music that was not being available. Statistics show they more you download the more you buy.

The internet was filerted out all the fools. In the 80's there were sooo many bands who were in it just to be cool and make money.
Today if you start a band you are not in it for the money or glamour, your in it for the music becuase you love making and playing music.(of course you need money to survive). Today it's a job a hard job. you really have to earn your money like all other jobs
Sure there are a lot of crap bands out there, there were just as many crappy bands in the 80-90's. The only diff is today bands make music cause they love music not just for the love of money

I still disagree.
there's a few genre leaders in every subgenre and the rest of the scene consists of filler clone acts. why do these do exist? because they are less talented musicians that want to live off their music too.
the subtlety is, upstart bands generally don't make nearly as much money today as did their peers 20 years ago because the more beggars at the banquet the less cake for everyone. but a musician's lifestyle legend goes on and it's still a dream factory for any youth no matter the degradation of the musician life standard.

you'll hate to admit that but Pantera were trendy then, and to a certain extent, huge as well. don't forget Far Beyond Driven hit the #1 chart position in 94-95 in the united states which was something unprecedented for a heavy metal band.
even Slayer didn't like Pantera too much then and were complaining about how they were getting heavy rotation on MTV while Divine Intervention had lasted only a few weeks in the top 30. this is fact. I still have the magazine and these words from Tom Araya.

Grunge was just a sales tag they gave bands that came out of the North West in the early nineties. How is it a musical style? I'll disregard your Kurt comment on the grounds that you're one of the Pantera fans that gives metal a bad name so know nothing. But are you saying Soundgarden were the emo of their time? They were the Black Sabbath of their time you imbecile. Listen to their music you twat.

I knew that band was going to be huge when I first heard them in 1988, ala the "Power Metal" CD.
I have always been a huge fan of Exhorder, they threw in the towel only after 2 RoadrunneR releases, way to soon.
People may complain about Exhorder's influence on Pantera, but you should check out Pantera's influence on former Exhorder members on the Fall From Grace CD released on Mayhem/ Fierce Record in 1997.

Well being 38, that make's me an 80's Metalhead. The 'Shave my Head" comment made me think back to 2001 when I did just that. I had my hair long to my waist, grew since I was a teen. And just one day in 2001 I decided I wanted to see what it was like to have no hair, So off it came.
I was into the thrash scene in the 80's. I listened to mainly Slayer Metallica and Megadeth along with Testament. More and more bands started to make it as the before mentioned bands opened up the avenues for the fans to get a taste of the newer unheard of bands.
I remember it was 89 and I was off to see Metallica @ MLG in Toronto. I felt like a poser standing there because the fans who were waiting toget in looked rabid, pissed off and just about to kill anything that walks five feet within their space... Why did I feel like that? Because I just felt like they were more metal then me LOL.. I was in my leather jacket, my tight jeans, my high top runners and was ready to let er rip.. but those fans just seemed heavier... This goes with the comment about not seeing true Metalheads around now... I see kids now walking around looking like they should be into Avril Lavinge more then anything Metal.
Just shit changes... I still follow the bands I did 20 plus years ago, I just doing it with a shaved head and the heart I had when I was looking like a Metalhead...

that's actually the best thing about Pantera...nice gateway to more underground stuff.
I'm not saying Slayer actually disliked Pantera but their comments regarding their success made it clear they were pissed and jealous at one point. it's true though that they became friends later on when pantera kicked the mtv stuff circa 98. at that same time slayer became friends with sepultura too after years of open hate and shit talking.
the bottom line is...if you can't defeat your enemy, befriend him. hahaha

grunge's mostly rooted in sabbath's and stooges' sound & attitude imo. but it's just a tag. pearl jam were pure 70s resurgence stuff, sonic youth were more extreme. then you have the british/european shoegazer bands which is another different thing. the only common thing between all those acts is that their sound was rooted in the 70s.

We were plagued with the worst "music" ever, no heart, no soul, just depressing music to hang yourself by. Pearl Jam and Nirvana were the worst of them all. They, along with the big corporations, contributed to the demise of many great bands and for that they will always be despised by billions of true metal fans.
You grunge fans (if they're any left) should be ashamed, as you would never admit in public that you like any of those depresso bands. It is a proven fact that grunge was a fad and it died very quickly and shamefully. It will never be back.

Why do some of you people keep having to segregate the music you like, or don't like, and box it in to some label? Who cares? You either like some band, or you don't. "metal will never die.." Who the fuck cares? There is only two kinds of music: good music, and bad music.
some people always need some kind of imaginary adversary to help define what they like, when no one really gives a shit.

Pear Jam might not be on the radio, and still totally blow, but people still listen to it. They sold out two nights at Air Canada Centre here like a year ago and I had no idea they still had fans..but apparently there's still a fuck load. What I've heard doesn't sound anything like grunge but more like super generic arena rock...so grunge is dead but PJ isn't.
Also for those of you that say metal died in the 90s... Not sure what the fuck you were doing but I was having a great time at death metal shows in the 90s.
I do miss the dangerous feeling of metal shows back in the late 80s and 90s. Shows are still fun but there's a totally different mix of people that show up at them now. The "coat rack" factor is through the roof these days. Coat racks are girls that are dragged to a metal show by bf that likes on or two songs by the band and look scared and misreble and compain that "they can't see".

I like Vs. and Vitalogy but PJ's first album was overrated and overplayed (much like nevermind) and the rest of their catalogue is kinda lame. Still liked Nirvana Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, but when it comes to Seattle, i prefer Melvins and Earth.
I like thrash, death, doom/sludge too, but it started with early 90s alternative and mainstream Pantera/Slayer metal, so i wouldnt dismiss the alternative/grunge world either.
