ATHEIST Members Collaborating On First New Material Since 1991 - July 12, 2008
Vocalist Kelly Shaefer of the reactivated seminal technical metal pioneers ATHEIST has issued the following update:

"[I'm] heading to Atlanta next Friday to jam with ATHEIST drummer and my best friend Mr. Steve Flynn, this wil mark the first time we have written together since 1991's 'Unquestionable Presence'. So I am curious how it will sound. I know it will be sick, there is a formula that me and Flynn have that automatically sounds like ATHEIST...so it will be fun to hear what it will sound like. And who knows? If it it goes well...?? We will see what happens."

In January 2006, frontman Kelly Shaefer reassembled much of what was widely considered ATHEIST's classic recording lineup (Shaefer, bassist Tony Choy, and drummer Steven Flynn) to perform a select number of one-off shows to celebrate the re-issue of their wildly-influential catalog (1988's "Piece of Time", 1993's "Elements", and the 1991's legendary "Unquestionable Presence"). Among those shows were performances at such legendary festivals such as Germany's Wacken Open Air, Norway's Hole In The Sky, Italy's Evolution, England's Bloodstock Open Air, and the Los Angeles' Murderfest.

Proressionally filmed video footage of ATHEIST performing the song "And the Psychic Saw" at the Wacken Open Air 2006 festival in Wacken, Germany can be viewed below.

Well Kelly did say that we'll see how it goes, they're just jamming right now. If they do come back, Hopefully they can get Rand Burkey back.

I don't think Rand Burkey is ever gonna come back,he was in prison for awhile & afterwards he was selling Atheist tshirts without the bands permission...

sounds great, but there"s been so many disapointing reunions in the last 10 years...hope Atheist will avoid the trap of nostalgia and come up with something innovative, because it was their trademark.

by the way the article title is wrong, Elements anyone ?

COMMENT | The news title isn't wrong...

This is referring to Kelly & Steve jamming together. The last time they were playing music together was the Unquestionable Presence era. Steve didn't write anything on the Elements album & had already left the band to go into full time education at that point...

I also hope they release the new material under a different band name as promised, to preserve the legacy of Atheist. I'd hate for them to do a Cynic & totally screw up like they have... as their new material sounds more like the B**tles, than Cynic. i.e. Complete Shit!

really?
I'm going to see live them shortly, hope it's still worthy...

yeah you're right about Atheist but let's not forget Rand was still in the band and playing on Elements, so that's 3 guys out of 4 from the previous line up, not that bad.

Rand Burkey may have played in Elements, but he's had nothing to do with the stack of reunion shows Atheist have done over the past 2 years & Elements was practically fully written by the time he agreed to rejoin the band for the recordings. It remains unlikely he'll ever be part of the band again.

Cynic, at Hellfest last year managed to do respectable cover versions of their old Focus songs with only 2 original members in the band - however their new material is complete Aeon Spoke pish. It would be like Kelly Shaefer recording with Steve Flynn & having Neurotica as the remainder of the band & trying to pass the music off as Atheist - it just doesn't work. Stop cross dressing the music like a fucking transvestite. Atheist or Neurotica - Cynic or Aeon Spoke... Pick a fucking door and go through it! That's what I say.

It doesn't say they are recording new Atheist material, it just says they are jamming together. They have always said they will never record a new Atheist album, because they don't want to tarnish their legacy and the Atheist name. So, don't get your hopes up.

COMMENT | I hope it isn't released as Atheist

Whatever comes of this, it will not sound right next to the current Atheist releases. I really hope that if any release results from this, it's called something else. You can't expect Kelly's mallcore project not to have some sort of influence on whatever else he does, even if it's on a subconscious level.

my prediction:

kelly and steve will jam together and add tony later on down the road, they will recruit the 2 guitarist from GNOSTIC and record a great record. my only hope is that kelly voice is better then the footage from 2006 performance and the backings he did on the GNOSTIC track posted on myspace. they should patch things up with randy because he wrote/played some amazing stuff for ATHEIST but with what other threaders have mentioned about him it looks like a lost cause. Kelly should recruit 2 more up and coming guitarist (because to me having the GNOSTIC dudes would be like having GNOSTIC's leftover riffs for disposal)

here's an idea, go and get Darren Mcfarland and have a dual bass section. but all in all i hope something comes of this jam session and back to the Unquestionable/Piece of time influenced riffs. good luck!

Kelly told me last year that a new Atheist record would never come but this could be a change of heart? Who knows... I hope a new Atheist comes out as they're one of my favorite bands of all time.
