METALLICA: 'Death Magnetic' Cover Artwork Revealed

The cover artwork for METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", can be viewed below. In an interview conducted yesterday (Wednesday, July 16) by VG TV at the opening show of the second leg of METALLICA's European summer tour in Bergen, Norway, guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield stated about the new album title, " 'Death Magnetic', at least the title, to me, it's… It had something to do with… It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [ ALICE IN CHAINS] and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death… some people are drawn towards it, and just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, [and] other people are afraid of it and push away. And the concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point. So that's kind of the subject matter." METALLICA has announced that every song "Death Magnetic" will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same date that the record arrives in stores, reports The Pulse of Radio. A post at the band's official web site stated, "It's a first in both music and gaming...The same day that 'Death Magnetic' hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for Guitar Hero III! We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release...Who knows?! Maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out." The post added that "Death Magnetic" will also be available for the new World Tour edition of Guitar Hero, which is due out this fall. Rumors of an all- METALLICA edition of Guitar Hero have been making the rounds recently, but the game's publishers have not confirmed this. "Death Magnetic" is due out in September and was produced by METALLICA and Rick Rubin. A deluxe box set edition of the album will be available in the U.S. The coffin box package will contain one CD featuring the album, another containing demos, a behind-the-scenes DVD, an exclusive T-shirt, a METALLICA flag, a collection of guitar picks, codes for a special live download and a poster. The coffin box will only be available through Metallica.com, MetClub.com, and MissionMetallica.com. Several other editions of "Death Magnetic" will also be offered for sale through the Mission: Metallica site, including an all-digital version and a high-end edition featuring five vinyl LPs and a lithograph. METALLICA's next U.S. date is the one-day Ozzfest on August 9 in Dallas, with a full North American tour slated to begin in October.

I must say I prefer the real thing and would rather not see it on the cover of an album. Based on that I say this cover is too plain and does not provide much to the imagination and is basically very dull. I hope the music is the best theyve ever written.

are usually good, I've noticed. Devin Townsend-Infinity and Soilwork-Naural Born Chaos are good examples. I know the color of the album has nothing to do with the quality of the music, but it seems like a lot of bands have chosen white when they know they have something that really stands out as a fucking good album, as if they think the album deserves to really stick out among other metal albums which tend to be darker colors... we shall see what Metallica deliver us... I'm anxious.

It's not the greatest cover ever...not even close...but everyone here seems to be missing something. The 'fingerprint' is actually that metal/magnetic dust stuff that comes with all those 'fun with physics' science kits, and the 'dirt' in the middle is an accumulation of the magnetic dust. But instead of forming a nice little lump, it's coming together in the form of a coffin. Hence the title 'Death Magnetic'.

This is the first album since Kill 'em All that they haven't used the 3-D version of the old style logo. Justice used a recessed, yet still 3-D version and all the others (Ride, Master, Black Album) used the block 3-D version.

The only Metallica album cover to be done by Pushead is St. Anger. Pushead has mainly done interior work and t-shirts for Metallica.
...And Justice for All is white, so fuck you.
This is one of the best metal album covers I've ever seen. I can't wait for some fuckin' MAGNETIC!

i would have loved it if they had it made on a field like in MOP. Maybe with a perspective or a vanishing point to give it a 3D feel to it.
and have the classic logo on top and much bigger. and instead of using plain white, they would have used real or digital photography to make it look real and fleshy.
But i still like it. It simple but cool and has the classic logo! also i think the guys decided to keep it white like they did with the black album but this time white!

the cover is iron filings around a bar magnet with a north and south pole. In this case, the magnet is replaced with a coffin, hence death.
the beauty here is science where the iron filings show the magnetic lines of flux or in simple terms, it gives you a sense of where the magnetic field is strongest.
basically it is a science aura

I like it. Everyone else says at first glance they thought it was a pussy then realised, but I got it at first glance, scrolled down, saw the pussy comments, scrolled back up...
Yeah, it is a bit pussy-like I guess. I think the fingerprint idea is closer.
It could have been a touch better. There is a slightly too... I dunno... Artificial feel to it. It wouldn't have taken anyone who can go that far with the artwork much more effort to make it look more realistic.
On the whole, though, good cover! Now what else is on this art forum? Oh no, wait, this is a metal forum. I almost forgot....
(yes, I though in a way metal is a form of art too. But you know what I mean)

The coffin is the "magnet", the dark area "the grave" is all the metal being attracted to it, and the "fingerprint" as some call it is the metal being attracted toward the grave/coffin/death.
Really quite simple and effective. I like it.

Fuck yeah there is something wrong with sell-out era poseur-era Metallica albums, not only are they the 3 worst albums in the histroy of metal, from a metal band, They are terrible altenative rock albums also, probably the worst 3 also in the histroy of rock music.
Metallica cashed in on the altnerative rock trend, but unforuntaely every alternative rock band and alternative rock album was better than Metallica's cash-in, knock-off, rip-off versions of that sub-genre.
The last 3 albums Metallica just make history of having 2 classic albums and 3 of the worst albums in the history of metal.
There is a reason that Metallica are poseurs and Metallica are Metal's biggest betrayers, and Metallica is the biggest disappointment, and Metallica is the biggest sellout in the histroy of heavy metal, and Metallica sucks .... it is because it is just historic fact.
I have my well earned doubts about the upcoming MetallicA CD, if they fuckover there current poseur/ asshole and there soccor mom fanbase, and deliver some authentic molten Metal, I will buy this USED. I will let the album seek for itself, and NO band gets a free pass, to write the worst music in the history of metal, like the last 3 releases; just because they had two albums that were a excellent crossbetween Motorhead, Discharge and Diamond Head.
