Former GUNS N' ROSES Drummer STEVEN ADLER Arrested For Possession Of Narcotics
- July 18, 2008
|
|
According to TMZ.com, former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler was arrested early this morning (Friday, July 18) in Hollywood for possession of narcotics, being under the influence and an outstanding warrant. Los Angeles police spokesman Richard French told the Associated Press that the 43-year-old Adler was arrested around 4 a.m. Friday by officers called to a home where a man reportedly was creating a disturbance and refusing to leave. He was jailed on $45,000 bail. Adler is still in police custody. The warrant stems from a 2005 case where Adler was charged for being under the influence of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended license. He then sealed his fate by missing a court date in April of 2006. The drummer told Lynn Hernandez of Tulsa, Oklahoma's 97.5 KMOD radio station at last weekend's (July 9-13) Rocklahoma festival in Pryor, Oklahoma that he was planning on being part of the cast of "Sober Living", a spin-off of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab". That seven-minute chat can be viewed below. "Sober Living", which was described as a cross between "Surreal Life" and "The Real World", would put a number of "Celebrity Rehab" alumni together in a luxurious Beverly Hills mansion for 30 days while they try to rebuild their careers without drugs and alcohol, according to the New York Post. Like "Celebrity Rehab", the new show would prominently feature Dr. Drew Pinsky ( "Loveline"), who oversees the celebs during their stints in televised rehab. Steven Adler last month underwent detoxification and treatment at a center in the Los Angeles area on the second season of the hit reality series "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew". The series, consisting of eight one-hour episodes, is slated to premiere October 2008 on VH1.

Gee Dr. Drew! This shocks me! Rehabilitating alchoholics and drug addicts with TV cameras rolling doesn't work??? I'm SHOCKED!!!
Oh wait, it DOES work - if you're trying to make yourself rich and famous at the expense of other people's dignity and well-being then it DOES work. OK, I see - my bad. You see, I didn't realize that was the goal. I thought it was about helping people - how stupid of me.
Adler needs real help from a real doctor. Dr. Drew is lower scum than Dr. Phil - he should only be playing a doctor on a soap opera (which he sort of is, but he's playing with people's real lives).

To shattered73:
Adler has been going to "real" doctors for the last 20 years and nothing has made enough of a difference. Actually paying him to enter rehab might have been the only way to get him to seek out help this time. It is also about time that people see how rehab works and what is involved in the process as opposed to thinking that these are some kind of resorts where people camp out for a few weeks. Unless you are an addict or have a family member that is an addict, you do not know what this process entails and the general public needs to be educated. So you can talk shit all you want but "Celebrity Rehab" is a good thing for everybody to see. it's much more "real" in that sense than most of the other "reality" shows.

so i guess it didn't take...
ok, "popcorn" has had a major problem since at least '91 (and probably before that), so much that he had to get kicked out for not being able to be in enough shape to record UYI... that's 17 years... figure he at least dabbled before that... and like someone else said, after a stroke and several other episodes, you'd think it would scare him straight...
he's sadly going to make that "inevitable" classic lineup reunion impossible one of these days...

This isn't as surprising as I thought it was initially. He can't stop and neither could my man Layne. Some just cannot feel pleasure in life without the substances due to the draining of endorphines and damaged receptors. In other words, when your brain isn't used to the heroin and crack releasing the dopamine and serotonin to feel pleasure or "happy" then it has to start producing it's own again and it takes time. This is called withdrawal and it is a real bitch for long time users.
On a positive note Mustaine and Ellefson went through a lot of treatment, probably around 20 rehabs, give or take, and they made it out so there is hope. I just don't see Adler doing it. Not based on his character and reading about him and hearing him.

This guy is addicted to the camera as much as he is addicted to drugs. He's never gotten over being fired from G'N'R and he's been trying to stay in the spotlight ever since.
He's been to rehab how many times now and he's never managed to stay sober. It's the decision that he has made...and now he has to live with it....albeit not for much longer from the sounds of it.

I see your point that many people don't fully understand the rehab process, but what I also understand is that one of the fundemental necessities of rehab - or any therapy - is the element of privacy. You need to be able to say and do things without the prying eyes of cameras and the general public.
It's a somewhat degrading experience, and I don't know anyone who wants to go through a degrading experience on nation al TV. These people are agreeing to this because the carrot of 'being in the limelight once again and making a comeback' is being dangled in front of their face - which is why these people do any of these 'celebreality' shows, but this is beyond the pale. If these people stopped and realized they're basically being put into a freak show they would think better on it.
But because these people have serious substance problems they aren't the most clear-thinking people. And the good folks at VH1 realize this.
To your point, if this were an educational program, it would feature nobodys and it would be on PBS. But it's not an educational show - people don't watch to learn more about rehab and how it can help, they're watching to see people who used to be on top of the world at rock bottom. We Americans tend top have a sick fascination with that which I've never understood - this is what keeps the tabloids in business.
So no - I don't believe Dr. Drew is trying to educate us, he's simply providing the absolute bottom-feeder of tabloid television.

Privacy is fine as long as you can be motivated to enter a program and stick to it for the rest of your life, basically. Most of these people have been trying to get clean for years without success. Being seen by millions of people may help them hit rock bottom and be the wake-up call that they need in order to stay clean. That's the only chance they have -- hitting rock bottom and truly believing that they will die unless they stay clean.
Most people don't watch "Celebrity Rehab" to be educated, but they will be, because most people don't understand the rehab process. Watching the show will help them understand that addicts are not "choosing" to be addicts and it will show the rehab process for how it is -- not a bunch of celebrities drugging it up and living the good life, as is often portrayed by celebrity magazines and websites.

You'd think by now people would get the idea that coke and heroin are life-altering, severely addictive drugs that drag you into a world of shit. I've seen plenty of people wreck their lives with that shit, but then again no one forced them to do it. And it's pretty common knowledge what the hardcore drugs can do. Stick by 'em, my ass, I tossed them off my boat.
Doesn't anyone just smoke a joint and drink a beer anymore?

Drugs lost him his job in GNR due to lack of ability to play (and giving dope to Axl's woman Erin Everly causing her to almost OD - which he denies).
Now he is a reality show has-been. Damn dude, life is gettin worse. Get straight and play, you had a good style. Sorum's style was too machine-like for GNR, Adler was better.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Steven for quite a while at Rocklahoma. The guy was sincere about staying clean, and was excited about what lay ahead for him.
Addiction issues blow, and rather than ridicule him, people need to be a bit more understanding. Steven is putting forth genuine effort to get clean, but (people who have been there understand this) sometimes the demons are just too great. The man has a sickness, and telling him what a loser he is doesn't help anyone.
While I love Blabbermouth as a whole, the venom and ugliness on here are sometimes too much to stomach. I know there are lots of people who read this board who agree, but stay silent. How about those of you with a conscience speaking up?
I am certain that there are more real human beings than there are idiots here...

People arent addicts because they choose to be but they continue to be addicts because they choose to be. I was addicted to crank back in the 90's and I didnt have to go to rehab to get off it. I saw myself and what it was doing to me and I quit on my own. If you want to quit, i mean really want to quit, then you can.

and that's the thing - people who try to quit without programs have the same success rate as people who go to rehab (granted, both success rates are low). it comes down to the addict, plain and simple. if you want it, you'll do it.

Coming from someone who knows all about drug/alcohol addiction, I can say this: no matter how many 'doctors' may be involved; no matter what outside 'influence' may come into play, the only way any such addiction/s is/are beaten begins with a personal desire to say 'that's it - I don't want to do this anymore.'
I was addicted to various drugs - drank to get drunk (there is a difference between hard drinking and drinking to get drunk) for years and years. And until the day when I finally said 'fuck this,' nothing and no one held the power to take away the desire or need to continue on as I was.
I feel for Stephen Adler, but know the guy has simply not ever been 100% with a resolve to affect change in his life so far as his addictions go. Hopefully he will come to attack his demons full force before the fucker dies.

Want a REAL book/film on addiction? Funny Dr. Drew never mentions this, and it's the all out autobiography of a terminal alcoholic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nb5eDGxo9I

The film is good, but the book is more or less the diary of a dying man who maps out his whole plan to drink himself to death. Incredible author.
