METALLICA: 'Death Magnetic' Track Listing Revealed? - July 23, 2008
According to the online sheet music retailer Music Dispatch, METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", will feature the following track listing:

(UPDATE: The Music Dispatch page has since been deleted.)

01. Death Magnetic
02. That Was Just Your Life
03. The End of the Line
04. Broken, Beat & Scarred
05. The Day That Never Comes
06. All Nightmare Long
07. Cyanide
08. The Unforgiven III
09. The Judas Kiss
10. Suicide & Redemption
11. My Apocalypse

METALLICA has revealed the cover artwork (see below) for the band's upcoming ninth studio album, "Death Magnetic", at its official web site. The black and white etching features what appears to be an open grave, with lines emanating out from it and the band's logo and album title underneath. In an interview conducted in Norway on Wednesday (July 16) by VG TV, frontman James Hetfield explained the meaning of the record's title, saying, "It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like (ALICE IN CHAINS frontman) Layne Staley and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death...just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, (and) other people are afraid of it and push away."

Hetfield added, "The concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point."

"Death Magnetic" is due out in September, although an exact date has yet to be announced.

METALLICA recently announced that every song on the album will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same day the CD arrives in stores.

The band is offering the record for sale in numerous configurations, ranging from a digital-only release to a deluxe "coffin box" that will come with a bonus CD, a DVD, a T-shirt, guitar picks and other goodies.

METALLICA is currently on tour in Europe and is expected to begin a North American jaunt in October.

If this indeed accurate, then I can see them acutally doing an Unforgiven III. Some people might find the concept lame, but if you look at the song as one massive story...
Also, hearing one of the fly on the wall clips, I heard a snippet of something james was playing that sounds like it would fit right in with Unforgiven; had a nice clean tone.
Also, judging by the song titles, looks like a concept album for sure.

I've been glancing at these threads for the last month or so and something hit me. I haven't seen it mentioned either. Unless I'm mistaken, other than the version of Ecstasy of Gold they do, they haven't done an instrumental track since To Live is To Die. I really hope this record has and instrumental piece on it. Their instrumental stuff is some of my favorite stuff of theirs so the fingers are crossed...or devil horned, or what the fuck ever...

Points against validity:
-11 tracks; its supposed to be 10
-that Revolver song that Hetfield was talking about isn't here
-Unforgiven III seems like a joke someone would make

Points in support:
-11 tracks were recorded, but they supposedly dropped one because of medium restraints. They could've worked it out.
-Titles change
-Unforgiven III sounds likely, since Metallica isn't exactly known for artistic integrity. Unofrgiven III would sell records, for sure.

It might work if Metallica wanted to shoot down the rumors right away?

Based on my assumption that Unforgiven III would have to be musically related to the other two Unforgivens (the first two had similar chord progressions) and therefore be a quiet/heavy ballad, then I call bullshit. Metallica traditionally put those type of songs at track four, as they did with the first two Unforgivens. This one is at track eight.

I assume "beat" is meant as "tired", not as "beaten" (in which case "beat" would be incorrect).

And to the others:
1. The Black album has a ballad at no. 8: Nothing Else Matters
2. Metallica haven't put out a title track since Justice, so assuming this track listing is fake based on "There's no title track at no. 2" seems a little far-fetched to me.

I think the song titles at least sound like real song titles, be they somewhat unmetallicaish (which might mean a change in subject matter).

You have WAY too much faith in Metallica's creativity if you read the title "Unforgiven III" and don't consider it a possibility, or even likely.

That being said, the fact that the page got taken down might hint towards this being real.

Like I said though, it's missing expected titles like Death Is Not the End, Vulturous, and the Revolver one.

And really I wouldn't be surprised with an Unforgiven III. ...As if the first two were not bad enough.

They should just put some random album out with continuations:

1. Seek & Destroy & Stuff
2. Nothing Else Matters, Still
3. Sad But True(-r than Ever)
4. The Memory Refrains
5. Harvester of Smiles
6. Damage Co., Etc.
7. Master of Dollhouses
8. The Five and a Half Horsemen
9. Crippled Death Still Creeping
10. Unforgiven 9.3
11. Twelve Leaf Clover
12. Fade to Blackest

NOW THAT WOULD BE A KILLER ALBUM. DON'T YOU KNOW IT.

End of the Line is a Devildriver AND Arch Enemy song... as well as My Apocalypse being an Arch Enemy song.

Remember Tomorrow is an Iron Maiden cover on the Kerrang tribute cd. It is being played on the radio, it does sound good.

We don't know if it's real or fake til it's confirmed. Who cares if there's an Unforgiven III, if they could make an album anywhere near even the Black Album at this point, that'd be great (I am a big fan of Load as well... Reload, not so much). If there's thrashy elements from Kill Em All-Justice... that'd be wonderful. We can hope.

I find this REALLY funny!! All the fuck-tards complaining and bitching about 'tallica and Death Magnetic are looking forward to this album just as much as us!!! (ie. the people who love the four horsemen of Metallica) but think its fashionable to be Metalli-bashers just because they havn't released ''Master Of Puppets 2'' in the last 10 years. . . Grow Up. Metallica play music for themselves too. They wanted to go in a different direction in the ninties.

If they wanted, they could have released the same album over and over again like Slayer, but they didnt because they are capable of playing other types of music. Dont get me wrong, Reign In Blood was a great record, but everything Slayer released afterwards sounded exactly the same as each other, no imagination.

Those of you who are worried about the sound of Death Magnetic needn't be. I have heard bits and pieces of the album and, believe me, it aint ''St. Anger 2''.

Think ''Black album'' crossed with ''Justice''. Dont believe me?? Go to Youtube and check out all the Mission Metallica clips.

For sure, this is gonna be a heavy metal record. Fast and thrashy aswell as mid paced and brooding. The essence of Metallica if you will.

In my opinion, ''Death Magnetic'' is gonna be a concept album about suicide and death. Something that would be very hard to incorporate into a bluesy rock record, like ''Load'' or ''Reload''. And they are definitley not gona recreate ''St. Anger'', a record that even the band themselves criticised.

As for The Unforgiven 3, im looking forward to it. The first Unforgiven was an epic ballad, and The Unforgiven 2 was the only song on Load that came close to recreating the sound of the Black Album. With the band returning to a Justice/ Black album sound, this song could have the potential to surpass the first Unforgiven, and will definitley surpass the second. It could even be the instrumental song on the album.

I have faith in the band. Hets voice is like it was in 1990, he has the power and gravel back in his voice that we all loved.
Hammett is rolling out solos like it was 1986.
Lars has his snare back and is drumming better than ive ever heard him drum since ''Justice''
and get ready for the best bass playing since Cliff Burton courtesy of Rob Trujillo.

I think a lot of people sell Metallica way too short. They are still the same band that brought us MOP and Ride The Lightning. They are still more than capable of writing a classic record, and for all we know, this could be the best album of their career!!!

Roll on September 15th.
