METALLICA: Official 'Death Magnetic' Track Listing Revealed

METALLICA has revealed the official track listing (in the final running order) for its new album, "Death Magnetic". It is as follows: 01. That Was Just Your Life02. The End Of The Line03. Broken, Beat & Scarred04. The Day That Never Comes05. All Nightmare Long06. Cyanide07. The Unforgiven III08. The Judas Kiss09. Suicide & Redemption10. My ApocalypseMETALLICA has revealed the cover artwork (see below) for the band's upcoming ninth studio album, "Death Magnetic", at its official web site. The black and white etching features what appears to be an open grave, with lines emanating out from it and the band's logo and album title underneath. In an interview conducted in Norway on Wednesday (July 16) by VG TV, frontman James Hetfield explained the meaning of the record's title, saying, "It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like ( ALICE IN CHAINS frontman) Layne Staley and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death...just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, (and) other people are afraid of it and push away." Hetfield added, "The concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point." "Death Magnetic" is due out in September, although an exact date has yet to be announced. METALLICA recently announced that every song on the album will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same day the CD arrives in stores. The band is offering the record for sale in numerous configurations, ranging from a digital-only release to a deluxe "coffin box" that will come with a bonus CD, a DVD, a T-shirt, guitar picks and other goodies. METALLICA is currently on tour in Europe and is expected to begin a North American jaunt in October.

Metallica has there own continuation of a song. I know Pink Floyd / Roger Waters has a lot of these: Shine on you has many parts. Another brick, what god wants. Red hot Chili peppers, Californication goes on to Dani California. Not the best ones, I might say.
Zeppelin has their own titleling system... 1 - 2 - 3 so forth. Just my opinion... Thank you

Pink Floyd's multi-part songs are written in one session, and included on one album. not to mention, they're part of concept albums. C.F. saviour machine - multi-part songs on multiple albums, but from the get-go, they were written as multi-part songs, within a multi-part concept. metallica is just rehashing an idea that worked for them once. it's like "shout at the devil '99", but worse.

The difference is with Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Another Brick in the Wall, and even Echoes the repeated theme appears on the same album, or in some cases even within the same track. The Zeppelin thing doesn't really apply since its just album titles, not rehashed music or themes, and who still listens to the RHCP anyway?
When Reload came out I remember an interview where they said they were jamming out on a riff, and somebody pointed out that what they were playing was just a distorted version of the same progression from the original Unforgiven, so they decided to remake it. It happened by accident, and following through with it was a bigger accident. Its not like in 1991 they sat down and decided they would write a trilogy and drag it out over the next 17 years. We're not talking about Iced Earth here. Not that I'm advocating any band doing that, but at least it made sense with IE. The fact that the second Unforgiven was such a disaster, and still even with Rick Rubin's presence nobody suggested doing a third would be a bad idea...that's a very, very scary sign for this album.
I am officially retiring as a Metallica apologist.

Ya know, I like that Metallica is trying to figure out how to be heavy again, but it all sounds too forced. This producer is trying to instill the same anxst that fueled Master of Puppets but those feelings simply do not exist. The demos they've put out over the last two years have been disappointing. Above all, the songs lack creativity (same vocal sounds, Kirk's over reliance on blues scales). Even James' explanation of the title seems like a stretch.
My expectations are fairly low for this one...

i guess some people never get tired of bashing metallica. i personally don't get it, i mean there are tons of shitty bands out right now. the majority of music out is shit. but it's still cool to hate on a band that is just doing their own thing. i'm glad they aren't afraid to continually experiment with their sound, i really can't stand bands that release the same album over and over again. i bet if they did a ride the lightening II nobody would say a thing. i mean if that's what gets you through the day, then by all means go for it, bash away. all i'm saying is that i just don't get it.

Unforgiven III is unfortunate. I LOVE Metallica.. bought EVERY album, even liked 4-5 songs on St. Anger (though hated the production) but I hated Unforgiven 1 and 2 - just not what I like about Metallica I guess.
No matter what I'm REALLY looking forward to this CD and have been since about 4 months after the day St. Anger was released because I played the shit out of it.
METALLICA is great. Don't agree with everything they do, but don't have to. Overall, HUGE fan and always will be. I'm grateful for all the amazing music and live shows they've given us over all these years.

.. Lars Ulrich is the least metal, most obnoxious, pretentious, moronic full-of-himself shithead ever. I hate him and I hate that he is in Metallica. He is not that skilled as a drummer, and he is just plain awful. Yech.
Concerning "Death Magnetic", I agree with those that say don't judge songs by their titles, but it is on the other hand quite easy to see, by the very titles, that this is gonna be more shit.
And Metallica is not the best band the world has seen. That honor goes to Opeth, obviously.

There was once hope. Then a vagina encased in white was revealed to be the vision of the "hope". Finally a track listing came forth that is nothing short of comical squashed any reason to believe that Metallica had anything left.
This album will be better than the last three but my guess is it will not be the return to form I personally have been craving. Now many people will and have been saying "you can't judge an album by the track listing". Frankly, they're absolutely right. But then you read it again and then once more for good measure. And you can't help but realize that something is starting to smell like a giant 'load'.

unforgiven 2 was pretty badass if you ask me...it wasn't metal but i think its kind of cool they are keeping an ongoing theme throughout the years
-look how long helloween lived on keeper of the seven keys,
-megadeth had return to hangar 18,
-judas priest referenced older songs from their catalog on about every track from angel of retribution,
-cky followed "96 quite bitter beings" with "escape from hellview",
-buddy holly had peggy sue and then peggy sue got married,
-least not forgot the mighty meatloaf... bat out of hell and its sequels
my point being the sequel song isn't a bad thing and i'm interested to see where it goes and what it sounds like
first day buy without a doubt

It´s so interesting how Metallica keeps staying relevant after all these years, just look at all the replies. And people say they are dead. They still create a huge buzz. A bigger buzz then ANY other metal band.
It´s funny when "haters" comment on a Metallica article, they say they dont like Metallica anymore and dont care but still they take their time to post a comment. I bet a lot of them will even stand outside the record shop when it opens on release day.
Metallica are more relevant than ever, this just shows it.

I'm still looking forward to this album, but "The Unforgiven III" makes me nervous. One of the reviews (the Quietus, I think) did mention that the single had a body resembling "The Unforgiven". The review then said that it sounded like "One" and that it was one of the better songs they heard. So who knows?

To DeadFeti and zxcv345...I'm sure that Arch Enemy was the FIRST band to have songs called "My Apocalypse" and "End Of The Line"...
These song titles are pretty disappointing - maybe it would've been better to stick to the working titles like "Flamingo" and "Glass Cow" =P
Still, I'll probably check this album out in September, if only for THE UNFORGIVEN THREE!!!!!!!!!! ^_^

Unforgiven III??? Are they following the movie trend of trilogies or have they just run out of originality?? And, I hate to say this about a band as phenomenal as Metallica...at least phenomenal before the days of Load....but it sounds to me like they've taken to their music to a whole new level, otherwise known as EMO. You bashers get more pathetic with time. These titles are no weaker, or less "emo" than some of the old ones: Fade To Black, Harvestor of Sorrow, The Thing That Should Not Be? You all would be bashing those titles if they came out today. You would call 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' "unorigional."
I personaly liked seeing Unforgiven III. It indicates that even if they are returning to a more metal sound of yore that they aren't ashamed of the'90's output. It's a big "fuck you" to the haters ,and as usual, you morons are too studip to get it.
'Broken, Beat & Scarred' reminds me of High on Fire's 'Hung, Drawn and quartered'. These titles are pretty cool.

Honestly I doubt Rubin would put up with the Unforgiven III shit myself, but then again who knows.
I have a strong feeling that they are being tight lipped about it, because they plan to do something very special with the album.
I wouldn't be surprised if the album is given away for free. Since they are so 'inspired' with Radiohead's distribution of "In Rainbows". And really Metallica wouldn't take a loss at all for doing this, because you know they will just charge you $120 to go see them when they hit your arena near you.

I was hopeful after hearing St. Anger. At least it had some fast parts to the songs (I remember listening to the Black album for the first time waiting for the fast song....and waiting...Damn, it's over).

It's funny how all these people think the Unforgiven II was awful, without saying what should be said, THE FIRST ONE TOTALLY SUCKED!! I think the Black album was the worst one!! At least Load and Re Load were just strait ahead Rock albums, and St. Anger was a good record with the world's worst production, especially regarding the drum and vocal productions (or lack there of).
Oh and here's a newsflash for you guys, NOBODY KNOWS HOW GOOD OR BAD THIS THING WILL BE UNTIL IT COMES OUT IN STORES, OR IS LEAKED ON THE INTERNET. Duh.

I bought the Enter Sandman single shortly before the Black album came out. And the b side was "Stone Cold Crazy" which had a similar sound to the Black album as it was likely recorded the same sessions. The "Remember Tommorow" cover is likely the same. Its not half bad, but the drumming gets on my nerves..

It's extreme fighting, headbanger style. In this corner, the Metallihaters, who detest all things Metallica and think Master of Puppets was a fluke. In the other, the Metalliwhores, who love all things Metallica, thought St. Anger was "interesting", and wipe the shit off their faces constantly from tonguing Lars' bunghole. *CLANG* Let the games begin.

i have a feeling tht the names are fake..Metallica is trying to fool us...mybe...even its official from the site..some of the names sounds abit weird..its not metallica style of naming their songs.... mybe they are trying to test the loyal fan..man unforgiven 3??? metallica is not tht dumb...!!!! i hope..its fake... really hoping..!!

your either forgiven or not, you can't be unforgiven three and 2 was a peice of shit. Hopefully it is a good song but they could have at least come up with a better title even something as lame as "still not forgiven" or something is better than unforgiven 3!

I'd just like to chime back in and say that was meant to be tongue in cheek, as "best band of the world" is rather subjective right?
Back to the track listing and trying to explain WHY I feel most of them aren't good enough for a proper Metallica comeback [by that I mean, a Metallica that wishes to return to its glory days, the eighties].
01. That Was Just Your Life
Kind of OK title, but a bit too "personal" with "your life" - older Metallica songs are less personal in their titles and lyrics, they are more observations from an invisible point of view.
02. The End Of The Line
This is just average. Anyone could come up with it. Doesn't make it bad, but it doesn't make it good either.
03. Broken, Beat & Scarred
Same as #01, this is more of an emo/metalcore type of song title, and my personal opinion is that it is SHIT. If it were less personal, a title like for example "The Scarred", or "Epitaph of the Broken" or whatever would be more Metallica-ish. IMO!
04. The Day That Never Comes
This one I like, it's vaguely suggestive of "The thing that should not be".
05. All Nightmare Long
Mm. Unsure.
06. Cyanide
Another track title that is not very typical of eighties Metallica.
07. The Unforgiven III
Nuff said.
08. The Judas Kiss
A title that, in my opinion, becomes too ironic considering the band.
09. Suicide & Redemption
The choice of words is poor, methinks. "Suicide." "Redemption". Yeah yeah yeah cry boohoo. Well, redemption is ok. Suicide is bleh.
10. My Apocalypse
No thanks.

I find this REALLY funny!! All the fuck-tards complaining and bitching about 'tallica and Death Magnetic are looking forward to this album just as much as us!!! (ie. the people who love the four horsemen of Metallica) but think its fashionable to be Metalli-bashers just because they havn't released ''Master Of Puppets 2'' in the last 10 years. . . Grow Up. Metallica play music for themselves too. They wanted to go in a different direction in the ninties.
If they wanted, they could have released the same album over and over again like Slayer, but they didnt because they are capable of playing other types of music. Dont get me wrong, Reign In Blood was a great record, but everything Slayer released afterwards sounded exactly the same as each other, no imagination.
Death Magnetic:
Think ''Black album'' crossed with ''Justice''. Dont believe me?? Go to Youtube and check out all the Mission Metallica clips.
For sure, this is gonna be a heavy metal record. Fast and thrashy aswell as mid paced and brooding. The essence of Metallica if you will.
''Death Magnetic'' is gonna be a concept album about suicide and death. Something that would be very hard to incorporate into a bluesy rock record, like ''Load'' or ''Reload''. And they are definitley not gona recreate ''St. Anger'', a record that even the band themselves criticised.
As for The Unforgiven 3, im looking forward to it. The first Unforgiven was an epic ballad, and The Unforgiven 2 was the only song on Reload that came close to recreating the sound of the Black Album. With the band returning to a Justice/ Black album sound, this song could have the potential to surpass the first Unforgiven, and will definitley surpass the second. It could even be the instrumental track on the album.
I have faith in the band. Hets voice is like it was in 1990, he has the power and gravel back in his voice that we all loved.
Hammett is rolling out solos like it was 1986.
Lars has his snare back and is drumming better than ive ever heard him drum since ''Justice''
and get ready for the best bass playing since Cliff Burton courtesy of Rob Trujillo.
I think a lot of people sell Metallica way too short. They are still the same band that brought us MOP and Ride The Lightning. They are still more than capable of writing a classic record, and for all we know, this could be the best album of their career!!!
Roll on September 15th.

is a dumb idea. The first one is good but Unforgiven II was really watereed down crap. If III is worse than II was, Metallica themselves will be unforgiven. St Anger had some good riffs believe it or not, but James' voice with that tick tick tick tock stuff just ruined the whole thing. James needs get back at least to where he was on Justice. I ever sold Metallica short, it;s always been the other way around, I hope they can redeem themselves with this album

Unforgiven III, eh?
Well, Unforgiven II wasn't too bad since the phrase makes sence when James sings it (..."unforgiven too"), but if he actually sings "Unforgiven three" in the song.. well... :S
And about the "Lars = metal" thing.. Who cares? As long as the music's good I couldn't care less what you call it. 90% of metal bands are boring and generic anyway :P

Wow there is a lot of hatred and love for Metallica. Metallica made some of the greatest metal of all time (and not just kill em' all to master of puppets).LOAD TO ST. ANGER were epic failures but they are now trying to come back and we get these poser fans following the "WE HATE METALLICA" trend and it is pathetic. You guys are the reasojn why St. Anger exists. Ride the Lighting, Damage Inc. Master of Puppets and Motorbreath are not great names for songs(or albums) either. So don’t bag on the names with out listening to them. Maybe Metallica just might make this album epic as And Justice For All and a pure metal masterpiece. Maybe the unforgiven III might me the best of the three and it is all they have promise it would be. Maybe this well get fans to shut up and bang there heads again. Maybe, just maybe...
