METALLICA, SLAYER, ALICE IN CHAINS, ANTHRAX Members Confirmed For OZZFEST's DIMEBAG Tribute
- July 23, 2008
|
|
Hard-rocking music fans headed to this year's Ozzfest will experience a special one-time only all-star tribute to fallen PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist and Texas native "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott as part of the Saturday, August 9 one-day stadium spectacular at Dallas' Pizza Hut Park. The tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell will feature Abbott's brother, Vinnie Paul (acting as musical director and playing drums), along with an array of prominent hard rockers. This not-to-be-missed performance will salute the acclaimed guitarist whose December 2004 murder while performing onstage at a Columbus, Ohio club still has the hard rock/metal community reeling. Artists already confirmed to honor "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott include: Kerry King (SLAYER) Jerry Cantrell (ALICE IN CHAINS) Mike Inez (ALICE IN CHAINS) King DiamondScott Ian (ANTHRAX) Kirk Hammett (METALLICA) Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED, KINGDOM OF SORROW) Chad Gray (MUDVAYNE, HELLYEAH) Bob Zilla (DAMAGEPLAN, HELLYEAH) These musicians will stand together onstage, following HELLYEAH's mainstage performance, to pay their respects to their fallen friend with a set including many PANTERA classics. Dimebag's longtime partner Rita Haney — who has worked tirelessly to keep his spirit alive — organized the tribute along with the Ozzfest team. While this began as an Ozzfest idea, Rita aggressively pursued it and brought together the talent making this homage a reality. "To have this event on the main stage at Ozzfest in Dallas is such a treat and an honor!" says Rita Haney. "When this tragedy originally happened, I saw the music community come together like I've never seen before. To have the name ' Dimebag' still, to this day, unite musicians to pay homage in such a respectful way, is very overwhelming! In Dime's vision, it's always been about a damn good time!" "When we decided on Dallas as the site for this year's Ozzfest, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to 'Dimebag' Darrell since it was his hometown," said Ozzfest founder Sharon Osbourne. " Dimebag was a part of our Ozzfest family and everyone in the metal community misses him dearly." The official Ozzfest 2008 "gydget" can be found below. Gydget is a widget maker providing marketing solutions focused to the entertainment industry. The service is aimed at bands, sports teams, and celebrities looking to get the word out to fans across the social networks they visit. The service is the spawn of former city events info provider Attendio.com. Ozzfest organizers confirmed earlier in May through a post at the official web site that the festival, a touring event for more than a decade, will transform into a "destination festival" this summer. OZZY OSBOURNE and METALLICA will headline the one-day show on August 9. Also appearing on the main stage are SERJ TANKIAN, KORN singer Jonathan Davis, HELLYEAH, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SHADOWS FALL, APOCALYPTICA, IN THIS MOMENT and the "all-star tribute" to slain PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. Sharon Osbourne said in the post, "We're going to be a stadium destination festival for now — we have gone past doing the sheds every summer. We've given everyone else the blueprint and we have to keep evolving Ozzfest. This is just the beginning; (promoter) AEG Live and I have a lot of new ideas for Ozzfest." Ozzfest 2008 lineup: Main Stage: OZZY OSBOURNE METALLICA SERJ TANKIAN HELLYEAH JONATHAN DAVIS CAVALERA CONSPIRACY SHADOWS FALL APOCALYPTICA IN THIS MOMENTAll-Star Tribute To "Dimebag" Darrell AbbottSecond Stage: SEVENDUST DEVILDRIVER KINGDOM OF SORROW SOILENT GREEN WITCHCRAFT GOATWHORETexas (Third) Stage: * THE SWORD DROWNING POOL RIGOR MORTIS WITHIN CHAOS THE DESTRO* Homage to the "many great metal bands that come from Texas," according to Sharon OsbourneRumors had been circulating for months that Ozzfest would become a one-or-two-day event this summer, with METALLICA surfacing as a potential headliner in the last few weeks. This will be the band's first Ozzfest appearance. Last year's Ozzfest, which hit 25 cities, was a free event, with tickets handled through corporate sponsorship. The tour caused controversy by asking acts to play without getting paid, which many felt led to a weaker lineup.

That is amazing... if Phil were to somehow work his way in there... I think everyone in attendance would shit their pants. Won't happen, but there will be pants-shitting anyway, I'm sure. I shall be there.

and Vinnie, so I doubt this will be the end.Dimebag's death was tragic and should be a reminder that life can change in a split second for us all. But, enough already let him truly rest in piece, his legacy will live on in the fans forever without these "tributes".There are many great musicians who have passed that never even get the respect they deserve.

Yeah, I would think for sure Zakk Wylde would be part of this... I'm guessing there will be more participants announced. It sounds interesting to say the least, whether they were playing a tribute to Dime or anyone, getting all these guys on one stage will be awesome.

Metal isnt stagnant, but Ozzfest just keeps playing the same stagnant bands. i.e. Sevendust, Drowning Pool, etc. Even Ozzy and Metallica...
Although I would like to see Cavalera Conspiracy.
Tehy should have High On Fire, Early Man among others.

These guys are probably doing this set gratis... otherwise, it would be interesting to see if any members of Ki$$ would join, knowing how much Dime loved them.
Jamey Jasta has been mouthpiece for metal what with the Headbanger's Ball, so I can see that. He's also a huge fan of Dime and they had toured together, so it's not such a stretch.

Get King to sing on Cemetary Gates!
Or go real old school Pantera and sing "We'll Meet Again"

I think it's time to get over it. It's messed up the way he died but he wasn't even that great of a guitar player. He doesn't need to be "honored" all the time. Does everyone forget when he was Diamond Darrel and Pantera played crappy hair metal? It died out so they found a niche a stuck with it. Yet somehow he's a Southern metal god. Sounds like a poser to me.

How could you be so ignorant? Every band has to find a niche. Do you not realize that Darrell is a metal riff master? if you don't you're either too young to have been there, or too old to get it. I'm guessing you're just a kid.....I don't care if you're 5, 15 or 50 Dime deserves all the credit he gets. I don't know if you remember this little guy but during, as I like to call it, "the Great Metal Depression Of The Nineties", Pantera were pretty much the only "heavy metal" band around. they kept it going during a time when you were just starting to get into music....maybe it was the first Korn album, or was it Linkin Park? Either way I don't know why I'm bothering. You kids wouldn't know a cool riff if it kicked you in the face. There's a reason so many different metal dignitaries will be on hand to honor him. That should've been enough proof for you. If you still need proof. Listen to "Far Beyond Driven". Quite possibly the heaviest album of all time. If that doesn't do it for you. "Vulgar Display Of Power" should open your eyes. if not, you're hopeless and are probably better off leaving us metalheads alone while you "rock out" to some Static-X.

Sadly just another way to milk the cash cow... Will that Rita just let it go and move along? What about doing it for Randy Rhoads too, or Hendrix, or Lennon again? We got it, he's dead and it's sad it happened the way it did. Shall we all remember, right, but we can do it by ourselves and not onstage at Ozzfest...
Damn tired of this!

It seems like it's becoming a good way to market a show for bands to play at, "call it a tribute for Dimebag". I wish these bands would stop using his name so they can have a place to play instead of the small clubs they should be playing in."
Maybe theres been alot of tribute shows/jams in general but no huge ones. This seems to be the first really big one. Unless i forgot any.

How can I be called ignorant by someone who's saying Pantera kept metal alive? The only thing they kept alive was popular, non-threatening hard rock. Maybe you forgot about or are too much of a pussy to remember the death and black metal movements of the 90's. But Pantera is somehow heavier than Deicide? The only one with actual metal in their veins(among other things)was Phil. And considering I remember Pantera's first album you might want to rethink questioning my age. They went from hair metal bitches to southern rockers because they were following trends. And before you say they set it, try looking into the scene in New Orleans before Pantera reinvented themselves.
