Emo And Goth To Be Made Illegal In Russia?

According to The Moscow Times, the Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal. Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government's "Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education" bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. Among other measures, the proposed legislation calls for heavy regulation of emo web sites and for banning young people dressed like emos from entering schools and government buildings. The bill also outlines what it calls a "spiritual and ethical crisis" facing Russian youth, including the high rate of alcohol abuse, teen abortions and "negative youth movements." Emo ideology encourages and justifies drug use and sexual relations among minors, according to the bill, which also lumps emos and goths together with skinheads. "The point of the bill is so that by 2020, Moscow will have someone to rule its government," said Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to Public Chamber member Yevgeny Yuryev, one of the bill's three coordinators. "This is the first step in the public discourse." The bill's sponsors hope that it will be passed into law by the end of the year. Read the entire report from The Moscow Times.

Eh, I don't worry about or even really notice goth or emo anymore, since I don't hang out with people under the age of 20. I grew up goth myself (though be it in a way more towards the art aspect than the fashion aspect), then around 18 I grew up.
But emo? Goddamn! I'm pretty tolerant, but I get the occasional person on my page who'll add me, IM me, and cry and whine about 2-second relationships, as I tell them "hey if you don't like your life, change it", and I have someone 10 years younger than me, apparently oblivious to places like Burma or Darfur, telling me how I'll never comprehend their pain because their Myspace didn't make them stars. Emo kids are just fucking annoying, and their whole dogma demands it.
I say we go one step further and just melt them down.

Well I think there are worse evils in the world than Emo or Goth. Drink and drugs has got to be the worst. BUT the Russians won't stop people drinking vodka anyway otherwise they'd have riots on there hands. Russian has a high proportion of drink related death. Plus if I remember correctly before the end of the old Soviet Union people were that desperate for vodka that they made there own lethal 100% proffversions and some even resorted to drinking a form of lighter fluid to get there fix. So, I am sure that banning emo and goth will cure all of that won't it????

They could just as easily have proposed the outlaw of heavy metal altogether.
What this suggests is something far more oppressive than just the abolition of a movement that most of us would prefer didn't exist. It's a political stance that none of us have any control over, and we should be thankful it doesn't affect the majority of those of us reading this blog today.
Take the piss out of the emos all you wish, just be thankful that you still have the political freedom to listen to a form of music that has been heavily maligned since the 1980s for being the cause of teen suicide, satanism, amongst many other social ills.

This is fucking retarded, I mean ya I would love to see the emo scene die out but not like this. You know what happens when things like these are approved? That means that if they ban emo and goth, it doesnt only limit free speech but the music artists as well will no longer be around. Lets look at it this way, if they consider death metal bands like Meshuggah or Deicide "Goth", with that label these bands wont be able to tour through Russia. Not a big deal but on a larger scale if the U.S. wants to do the same thing then where are all of our favorite bands going to be? Hell, if they put a ban on these 2 things, then who knows how many more bans they will put on shit until they finally realize that its not the trend thats the issue but the choice of the consumers. I completely disagree with this, its just going to lead to even more problems.

The fact they would ban them from government buildings and schools is kind of scary. That could eventually lead to putting them in terror watch lists. Wouldn't be surprised if that hasn't happened already. This really isn't shocking news to me. Russia has never been a country noted for freedom of speech anyway. Then again, America's version of "freedom of speech" isn't all it's cracked out to be either and it gets worse all the time.

All of my fellow metal heads that are so happy by this news are being very short sighted. Of course we all think emo and goth music is lame, we're metal heads, so that's natural. However, this kind of cultural repression should be seen as very, very bad news for ANYONE who values freedom.
Metal heads don't have to like emo music, but they should support the emo scene's right to exist. If a government can censor emo or goth music, what is going to stop them from censoring metal?

Even the dictionary, and spell check doesn't recognize the word "Emo" so, how has it gotten this far? How can one ban something we ourselves have truly yet to understand or really even define? We are burning the very coal that was created by the worlds way of recycling the deadly CO2 in the air during the Jurassic times! Go World! Rejoice! We should worry more about our freedom to act upon things that are out of our control. Time can solve one's way of being but, the Earth will also survive us! When will we realize that we're nothing when it comes to Mother Nature, other than a nuisance?!?! Wake up everyday, and be thankful for what you have because it won't always be there. The article never said emo and goth music will be made illegal. From what I know NSBM bands play and release music freely in Russia so why would Russia's govt allow that but not emo and goth music? So no...I dont think they intend to make emo and goth music illegal to listten to, release and play live.

Most of the "pro-emo/goth music ban" shit, from posters, have to be taken lightheartedly. I am sure only 1% of them literally want to see it banned. And while emos generally seem to not hang with the metalheads Ive noticed that metalheads and goths, while maybe not in the same 'clique', are nevertheless very much friends with each other. In fact it seems like every male metalhead has had at least 1 gothic girlfriend in his lifetime. So any anti-gothic posts are kind of odd. Since they are generally accepted by metalheads.

well now that we have "free speech zones" in the u.s. and people can be arrested for using protest signs outside those zones, i am a little concerned about where free speech is headed in my country. we as citizens need to use critical thinking. if you still think my comment was so "rediculous and clueless", why don't you take a look at a few of these articles about free speech in the u.s.:

There's no need to ban Emo. Those kids will be into something else stupid in less than a year. The bands have run out of days of the week and girls names to name themselves after anyway..it's done. Wait...there's still "Jessica Monday" or some shit but it's done.
Leave the goth kids alone, they just quetly judge people and dance funny.
