Today Marks 25th Anniversary Of METALLICA Debut - July 25, 2008
The Pulse of Radio reports: Friday (July 25) marks the 25th anniversary of the release of METALLICA's debut album, "Kill 'Em All". Originally issued on July 25, 1983 through the independent label Megaforce Records, "Kill 'Em All" was recorded in two weeks on a miniscule budget in upstate New York. Although only 1,500 copies were initially pressed, the album was reissued by Elektra Records after the band signed to that label in 1984 and has since been certified triple platinum for sales of more than three million copies.

The original title of "Kill 'Em All" was "Metal Up Your Ass".

The album's opening cut, "Hit the Lights", was the first song that frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich wrote together after forming METALLICA. An early version of the track appeared on the 1982 compilation "Metal Massacre".

Lead guitarist Dave Mustaine was replaced by Kirk Hammett shortly before recording commenced, although Mustaine still has several writing credits on the disc and went on to form MEGADETH.

A number of songs from the album are still part of METALLICA's set list to this day, including "The Four Horsemen", "Seek and Destroy" and "No Remorse".

METALLICA has since gone on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, selling tens of millions of copies of its eight studio albums, including 15 million alone of 1991's self-titled "black album." The band's ninth effort, "Death Magnetic", is slated to arrive in September.

As for how long the group can continue to play, drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that he feels good about METALLICA's future. "It's still fun and there's still a lot of people that get off on it, and, you know, you're playing to 50,000 people in Norway and most of them weren't born, not when 'Kill 'Em All' came out, but, like, when the 'black album'came out! You know what I mean, it's like a whole new thing. The question mark is, I just don't know physically. The physical element is just the unknown. If we can find a way to deal with that, then I think we could stick around for a while."

With this anniversary, METALLICA is now eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Metal Blade Records owner and CEO Brian Slagel recently conducted interviews with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich to coincide with the 25th anniversary of "Kill 'Em All". Watch the six-and-a-half-minute clip below.

I have a special connection to this album because I also recently celebrated my 25th anniversary on May the 19th. I'm truly honored to be associated with such a legendary, landmark album. As much as we bash Metallica nowadays we almost lose sight of the fact that these guys helped to shape the future of all things to come. So in that spirit of honor, reverence and tradition I want to wish Metallica and everybody in their camp a happy 25th anniversary and as always R.I.P. to the great Cliff Burton.

As much as I do not like Metallica these days, they should be a shoe-in for the Hall of fame. They single-handedly changed the future of Heavy Metal in the mid-80's. I too will be playing this CD in honor of it's 25th anniversary. Funny, I was just thinking about this CD this morning, and thinking what a great CD it was!

Here's to hoping that "Death Magnetic" is even half the record "Kill 'Em All" was/is.

Yes, I too have the original release on vinyl and CD. I recall showing up to Psycology class with Metallica written all over my book cover. One of my mates who tried to be all into music asked who it was and I replied a great, tight speed metal band. His reply... They won't last.

So fast forward to the Master of Puppets tour and who do I see fighting for a spot on the barricade. Yep, you guessed it.

I called his ass out in front of everyone. He was laughed at, cursed at and bitched slapped upon the back of the head...

Those were the days...

No Life til Leather !!!!

and for future postings.... I also haved RTL on Megaforce with the original fan club insert.

RIP Cliff Burton

I can't believe this has only sold 3 million. Almost as surprising to me as when the Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks went platinum in like 2000 something. I say, if you still have grandparents, go buy them each a copy for Grandparents day. They will thank you....trust me.

I remember being 13 or so walking around a cemetary with some friends when all of a sudden a cop pulled up. I guess the caretaker called the police on us. The pig frisked us and I had a copy of Kill 'Em All in my jean jacket pocket. "What in the hell is this?" He asked me! Ahhh...fond memories LOL! Anyway, I still love this album and just recently broke it out. Metallica will always be one of my all time faves.

i remember the 2 stores i tried first gave me weird looks when i asked for 'metallica'. found it at alwilk's records in nj a few weeks later. mom had to drive me, i was 13. this was my very first introduction to what would later become known as thrash, which has gone on to both enrich my life and simultaneously ruin it.

looking back, we didn't have any sub-genre's - it was all just metal. some punk dudes i knew laughed at it and thought it was just dumb metalheads making an attempt to play punk. what a great time to have been alive and banging. holy shit i am a fucking old man. in hindsight, this news makes really me feel like complete shit! haha!

Wow really? Let me know (email) or post it on torrent when you're done. There is this other cool (kinda cool) thing "And Justice For Jason" where this bass player plays over Justice (pretty well I may add) in an effort to have bass on the album.

I remember the mystique surrounding the band in the early days which would be hard to achieve now and being one of the few where I lived that knew of the band. Few photos and no video footage until the Cliff 'em All video which I played to death. The first 3 albums are masterpieces followed by the 4th and then the Load and Reload albums alongside the black album. St Anger was a mistake when Metallica tried to be System Of A Down. Metallica were once my favourite band and I seen them every tour until the last 2. Now I could not be bothered and they have slipped well down my list of bands. I can't stand the guys they have turned into. I would love if the new album was great but I won't rush out and buy it like the others until I hear what it is like.

Incredible album.....I like all of Metallica's music but its no secret they're older music is better.

See, if they(and other bands as well) would just record an album in two weeks they'd probably end up with another masterpiece unlike now where it takes them 1-2 years to make an album and everyone thinks its not as good.

and it sounded FANTASTIC! Haven't heard it in awhile. Before it came out I did have the demos of most of the songs and a live tape from the Old Waldorf (I think) so I kinda knew what to expect, but Kill 'em all is perfect. I'll have to give those demos a listen (lost my cassette - got ' em on a CD called 'Covering 'em' which also has a few covers.

By the way, to the spellchecker above, could you please tell me how to spell the following:
'em (as in Kill 'em all)
The Mechanix (it seems to be a Metallica song at one time). And no, I don't want to be a bad speller all the time like a rapper, but there is a time and a place for everything. And English evolves all the time. I know ain't isn't a word but it depends on what the meaning of the word isn't is. My point is that I'd rather say 'gonna' than 'going to' or 'kinda' as opposed to 'kind of'. I draw the line between rap (unacceptable) and bands like Slade or The Godz (acceptable). Plus, it's natural to speak bad English when you're trying to communicate with someone who doesn't speak native English, so you try to structure you're sentences so someone can understand it. And when I was in school I thought more about my growling stomach or getting beat up or whatever than about whether eye b4 e becept after see (ooops! I'm sorry - I meant sea). And when you come into contact with Spanish speaking people, you realize that English is very hard to learn compared to Spanish. English is less consistent (how many different ways can you pronounce a word with an ough in it: thought, through, dough, maybe more. And teachers can't hold everyone back until they understand everything. Sorry, but that was long enough (there's another ough sound - even the ou in sound is not the same as the examples given) so forgive me if I don't proofread for errors.

"Metallica lost their 'coolness long ago & I'm wondering if they were ever cool at all. Maybe Cliff & Dave Mustain were what made them cool in the first place? That is something to ponder."

Okay, clearly you're not too bright so I'll try to use small words so you can understand. I mean, don't get me wrong, saying things like "their new album WILL suck hairy moose ass" is very intelligent and makes you sound really, really cool. Then the way you changed my user name from badmansludge to FATmansludge...that's genious!!! I don't know how you come up with this stuff. It's really awesome!!! I mean it, you're pretty much like my hero. But, judging from all that, I'm not sure if you're thirteen or just an uneducated middle-aged high school drop out. Either way, I'll try to keep it simple for you. You're telling me I don't know anything about good music, yet you define whether or not a band is good by their "coolness"? And, even if that was a rational statement, you're telling me that Dave Mustaine is cool? Wow. That certainly speaks volumes to the quality of person you are. Look...I get it. You're one of the small minded fools that cried "sellout" when Metallica released TBA and the Loads. Then, when the new album comes out you will download it and bitch like a little girl because it doesn't sound exactly like Puppets. Now, go ahead and respond with a bunch of insults and name calling reminiscent of a third grader. I look forward to it. Reading your posts is like talking to a retard that is oblivious to the fact that the only reason I'm talking to him is because he doesn't know I'm laughing and making fun of him. Good times...post away.
