CHRIS CORNELL To Unleash His 'Scream' This Fall - July 29, 2008
The Pulse of Radio reports: Ex-SOUNDGARDEN and AUDIOSLAVE singer Chris Cornell's third solo album, titled "Scream", will be out this fall, with the exact release date yet to be determined. Several song excerpts recently surfaced online and indicate a very different style for the vocalist. Cornell recorded the disc with famed urban pop producer Timbaland, and told The Pulse of Radio the results surprised him. "Tim lent a lot to what I describe as sort of the psychedelic aspect of this album, kind of a PINK FLOYD or 'Dark Side of the Moon' or almost like a QUEEN 'Night at the Opera' type of a feel to me. That's something I never would have predicted. You know, I would have felt like I would be the one that would try to go into the album-oriented rock world, and really it was Tim's influence on this album that pushed it more in that direction."

Cornell is currently appearing on LINKIN PARK's Projekt Revolution tour, which stops on Wednesday (July 30) in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Timbaland has previously produced albums by MADONNA, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, NELLY FURTADO, ASHLEE SIMPSON and many others, in addition to recording his own projects.

Cornell's previous solo album, "Carry On", was released in the spring of 2007. He officially left AUDIOSLAVE earlier that year.

"Carry On" contained his cover of MICHAEL JACKSON's "Beat It", as well as "You Know My Name", his theme song for the 2006 James Bond movie "Casino Royale".

ultimately it will sound like garbage.

Chris actually is a great singer, but Timbaland is not a musician, and Chris forgot what rock was a long time ago so I will happily skip this one.

In case no one noticed, Chris Cornell went to shit shortly after Soundgarden's Batmotorfinger album. Too many chicks asking him to sing them sweet lullabys I guess??? The first Auioslave album offered SOME hope of a renewed and possibly "awakened" Cornell....but NO. The next two albums proved that all hope was lost. It should be no surprise that this once great vocalist has become dimmed and dulled by money, production-gurus and more than likely a nagging wife. Too bad. He used to be bad ass.

Greatest thing he ever did was Temple Of The Dog. That was a bad mother fucker right there. And I don't give a shit what anybody says here, Hungry sounded amazing with Eddie Vedder. But I love Pearl Jam so I guess I would feel that way. The song "Call Me A Dog" i think it was, is freaking brilliant.

Audioslave? No thanks. I give credit to Morello but I hate his style. I know he is smart and talented, great. Can't stand his playing.

This stuff (and there's more available on YouTube) doesn't sound like Queen or Floyd. It sounds like a decent knockoff of Gnarls Barkley. Cornell actually has a great voice for this kind of material, even though everybody here is going to excoriate him for working with Timbaland. The material (at least the leaked stuff) isn't the best, though. Give the guy credit for trying something new. Metal isn't the only music, you know.

the music i don't think is that bad...his actual singing is pretty good its just not what you'd expect from him

I agree that temple of the dog album blows everything out of the water that he's ever done including soundgarden.

I probably won't listen to his new album much but i think he is doing a good job for that type of music. I agree it sounds gnarls barkley-ish

I don't get people's obsession with Temple of the Dog, to me that album has about 4 classic songs and a shitload of filler or songs that don't have very strong parts or melodies. I like it, but it's far from his best work. Soundgarden kicks the shit out of Temple of the Dog. Euphoria Morning does too, that's a brilliant album.

and don't get me started on Audioslave. I'll never fucking understand what the grudge is that people have against them. In 10 years, everyone will be quietly eating their words on those albums.

because it seemed like nobody gave a shit about Euphoria Morning at the time - now everybody loves it. I once bought a second copy for 30 pence. Criminal.

I thought the first Audioslave album was excellent - unlike everybody else who comes on here to slag them off (Mungface is an exception of course). But the following two albums started moving towards the middle of the road (exactly where Carry On was happy to lie down) and they never came close to the potential shown on the debut for me.

And frontmanford - if you can't appreciate the excellence Superuknown and Down On The Upside then you must be out of your mind (riot).

I got Euphoria Morning the day it came out, and have worn it out ever since.

You really ought to listen to some tracks off the last 2 Audioslave albums again. Especially Wide Awake, Nothing Left to Say But Goodbye, Revelations, #1 Zero, etc. There are plenty of grade A rockers, songs that stand up to or even rise above many songs on the first album.

Thanks for the links. I forgot how lame "Cemetery Gates" was--There's still some hair metal left in these boys. One of these videos has a prominently featured guitar that's painted up to look like a confederate flag. Classy touch, guys.

You must not have listened to much (or any) Soundgarden. Cornell can go quite high himself, while maintaining more control over his voice. Cornell is one of the few hard rock vocalists left with any kind of soul influence. Of course you'd probably prefer hearing some redneck Aryan motherfucker alternating between sounding like the cookie monster and aping the silly high-pitched squeals of a homosexual Englishman--rather ironic, that!

And oh yeah. Anybody can do the death metal growl. ANYBODY. Your mom could do it.

Also you forgot to give me an example what you described as Phil's "weird-ass vocals".

Dude, listen to soundgarden and temple. Cornell has a freaking amazing voice. Low to high. Now, I will grant you he seems to have quit using it since then. That is one of my beefs with him. He doesn't pull out the range very often. And no, I don't want constant screaming, but use what you were given. But to say he has no range? You haven't listened to him in the past.

You are on another planet from the rest of the earth... Cornell sang a lot of high pitched vocals back in the early Soundgarden days but sorry he did not do a growl... oh wait other than say "Slaughtered" Phil did not do death metal vocals. So your point on that is stupid. Also I doubt seriously Phil could even sing Cemetary Gates like he did back then any time after 1994 and I have heard him attempt it but his voice for that shit is shot. I also highly doubt Metallica inspired shit for Pantera considering from "Vulgar Display Of Power" on it was all heavier than anything Metallica ever did. I honestly think you are full of shit and trying to be funny. Saying Chris Cornell doesnt have a range is one of the stupidest comments I have ever heard. The dude sang his ass off and also screamed quite well too. Also to say everyone sucks at death growls is stupid too. Fuck it man all of your post are just plain moronic and I refuse to take them seriously you troll.

Cornell is a great singer one of the best!! and a great range, one of the best and he can still sing it all but he had 2-3 bad years live when he was in Audioslave but last year live he nailed it all.
the first and last Audioslave albums were good and better then anything by Rage against the Machine, but the second one was just middle of the road radio rock, similar to new Red Hot Chili Peppers, just playing it save. lets hope next album will be more rock

It's safe to say that his new material is a bit different than in the past, but that's not to say it isn't good. I, too, am a huge fan of the older, heavier music in the days of Temple and SG. Everyone thought wtf when Metallica did a session with an orchestra. It turned out to be pretty good. The new album "Scream" is an experimental album with beats provided by Timbaland. Chris Cornell isn't 18 years old anymore but he is still an amazing singer. I think the problem is that people want the same old stuff time after time. I think that the new tracks are inovative and bring a fresh new feel to his music. As music fans of rock, and some of us not liking hip-hop at all, it is sometimes okay to expand our musical horizons to make the listening experience an adventure and not a bore.

He is one of the best high pitch singers out there. Bruce Dickinson has a real high pitch and HE praised Cornell. Cornell can go so high there was once a commercial on it where he talks about how he realized he had that in him. He is one of the best singers out there and is mainly known for how high he goes, just as Phil did in the end of Cemetary Gates but who really cares? So what? Plenty of people who don't go high but they make great albums. Doesn't really mean much. About as important as guitarists shredding and a double bass drummer going faster than the guy next to him. Ain't that important. Without any of that shit, there are STILL amazing bands out there who don't need to do any of it or at least do 1 of these several technical "showoff" moves as I just described above.

Soundgarden AND TOTD are amazing. All that stuff is awesome. Much better than Audioslave.

First of all, I know a few of you have commented on this, but the song covered by Chris Cornell on "Carry On" is "Billie Jean," NOT "Beat It." Secondly, the album KICKED ASS . . . especially the bonus tracks which were NOT released on the U.S. version of the album.

Chris Cornell's voice is NOT restricted to any genre . . . if you were a hip-hop producer wouldn't YOU want to sign his ass?!? OF COURSE you would . . . and if you listened to the interview at all, he said that the idea of collaborating with Timbaland was suggested by either his brother or his brother-in-law (or something of that nature). ANYWAY, Cornell wanted to give it a shot, 'cause, well, what has he got to loose, really? I'm not skeptical at ALL about this album. I have heard 6 tracks on the new CD and they are AWESOME. I think it's GREAT that Cornell is trying out something new for a change and not getting stuck in the cycle of shitty rock like many other artists these days (the only one we got left is PEARL JAM, really . . . ). But Cornell is TRUE to HIMSELF and a revolutionary . . . look at all the controversy caused by AUDIOSLAVE . . . I don't expect everyone to like it. Not everyone is open to diverse musical styles. This type of thing is not surprising considering the cover of "Fopp" on "Screaming Life/Fopp" -- I don't know why people are so pessimistic.

That's all I have to say (for now).
