Report: SPACEHOG Frontman In The Running For VELVET REVOLVER Singer Slot
- July 30, 2008
|
|
Shirley Halperin of Entertainment Weekly reports that Royston Langdon — frontman for SPACEHOG (who had a 1995 hit with "In the Meantime") and estranged husband of Liv Tyler ( AEROSMITH singer Steven Tyler's daughter) — is in the running for the VELVET REVOLVER singer gig after several successful jam sessions in Los Angeles. "They all got along great," an insider told Entertainment Weekly. "It was really a refreshing change for the band." Read more from Entertainment Weekly. In a recent interview with MusicRadar.com, VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum said about the band's singer search, "We are looking. We are actively looking. We rehearsed for a couple of weeks. We tried out a couple of guys. We have a guy right now that we're still... let me see, what would be the correct word... massaging, as you will-sort of checking it out, feeling it out, letting him work with us." However, Matt refused to reveal the vocalist's identity because he said they want to make sure that he was the right person for the job. "I'd rather not say who it is-just because I don't want it to get out that he might be the guy," he said. "I mean, we like him, he's awesome. I'm kind of worried that we might be so used to the drama. I kind of looked around at the guys. I said, 'Man, this guy is a super-nice dude. You think we can go with that or what?" Slash (VELVET REVOLVER), Jerry Cantrell (ALICE IN CHAINS), Royston Langdon (SPACEHOG), Jason Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN) performing "Rooster" in Las Vegas on July 5, 2008: Slash and Royston Langdon performing "It's So Easy" in Las Vegas on July 5, 2008:

Every time I see footage of these guys they are playing covers of their old bands.Either write some new tunes, after finding your new singer, or do what you really want get your old band back.

Makes no major difference to me since both Spacehog and Velvet Revolver were average bands at best anyway.

Spacehog's first album is a fav of mine. A "treasure of my youth". My mom got it for me as a gift. She heard a few of their songs and thought Royston sounded like Axl. I was a big GnR fan, so she figured I'd like it. He does have an Axl-like quality to his voice on certain songs (check out "Cruel To Be Kind"). I think this could be cool.

I like Spacehog, and this is intriguing news, but I'm not sure his voice is right for this type of music.

ITS HARD PLEASING EVERYONE ISN'T IT ?
they put out libertad and the contraband which is new music. Its more then I can say for allot of bands that just play the old hits or sit on their new music for 13 years (chidem)

that could really make that band special imo won't be doing it:
Ian Thornley - I don't think he would sing someone else's songs. He's a fully fledged songwriter and guitarist, not just a frontman. The new songs he's written are superior to anything Slash and co have come up with in recent years anyway.
Travis Meeks - they already tried him and didn't like his god complex. That man has some serious raw talent but he's too much of a loose cannon of flower power confusion.
From what I've heard of Royston in the past, VR would have to dramatically change their whole style to make it work.
The sad truth is Slash is a one man band, he probably knows that. That one band is where he belongs and is meant to be. It's just that another party is too damn stupid to see it and lay their pride down on the line for once.
Axl you really are a fool.

I only know the one hit by Spacehog ( I liked it for a while now - 13 years now) and will listen to more until I honestly comment further. I am sure he really is a decent individual, which means SO much in a band; however, he sounds like he is ..... trying to be something that he is not. I only mean this from the sincere bottom of my drunken heart. I know he is a good dude but I must hear more first. Hearing him do "Rooster"? I just don't know if it is this guys style. He has to have it in him. Otherwise it just doesn't sound right.
I take nothing of consideration into his ex-marriage, that and his personality do not make him the right person for this outfit!
